That was interesting! I have a bug out bag similar to yours & I do have a Geiger counter. I bought a cheaper one. I do not have a basement & no room to store MREs & tools. My future plan is to purchase land & build an underground shelter. Have solar panels above ground, but have backup batteries stockpiled. I'm really into the show, Doomsday Preppers & have learned a lot. I also love the show, Alone! I'll never be able to do that because of health reasons but if I was healthy, I could stay out there because I don't have any loose ends. My entire family is deceased so it's just me. I've been on my own for many years & I love it! I'm enjoying your vids! Very informative!

Some good tips there Lilly. Myself, I live in the woods on a mountain so I remain prepared. As far as a generator is concerned, I use a Dual Fuel 7500W generator which runs on both propane and gasoline. I prefer propane as it never goes bad and stores safer than gasoline does. Additionally, if the power goes out for an extended period of time you wouldn't be able to purchase gasoline since the pumps are electrically powered. However, with propane you can easily have your tanks refilled since no power is required on a pressurized system. Another thing if you own a generator, test it every six months to make sure it starts and runs under a load. Speaking from experience there. Thanks for sharing. Cheers!

I thought I was prepared here in southern Queensland Australia but in 2011 and again in 2012 the floods destroyed thousands of homes and power was out for weeks, the tap water was contaminated by E coli bacteria for 2 or more weeks. Living on top of a hill my family was trapped on all sides by water, all roads flooded by raging water and many of my neighbours houses were flooded or washed away but thankfully our home was safe. It happens so suddenly and unexpectedly, the area hadn't flooded since 1974 and even then it wasn't as bad as what happened in 2011. You can't predict a disaster but you can prepare for one. It might never happen or it could be tomorrow.

This recent situation caught a lot of people with their pants down. A lot of people went out buying bread and milk. All fine and well but you can't store that for days, unless you freeze it. And for that you need electricity as well.

Great basement setup. For your power, lights ,phone's, etc. .. Look into a solar power banks or generators . Super quiet ,do solar panels recharge themselves. Jackery, Ecoflow , Aimtom ; these are a few you can take a look at. I'm using Ecoflow, pretty good unit, lots of options for add on. Thanks for sharing your views and preps. Stay safe and focused and Blessings to you.

Someone has already mentioned water butts for your rain gutters. If not all your gutters are set up for it buy the downpipe connectors so you can convert them to drain into your wheelie-bins. Then get some wheelie-bin liners so you can instantly convert your wheelie-bins into clean water containers.
I like the way you have thought about your neighbours with hand-held radios. For anyone not lucky enough to live in a detached house I would also keep for my neighbours some cheap LED camp lights or flashlights and a block of batteries. If the lights go out you can hand them some light, which would hopefully prevent them from using candles which for some reason, people can't do so safely.
In prolonged blackouts you could see an awful lot of house fires started by candles.

My setup has the same structure but is more solid. I have a rain water collecting tank with a reverse osmosis system and clean water reserve. The electric solar system is scaled up to a portable 100 w solar panel and a Suaoki 500w portable battery with 220V output doubled by a diesel electricity generator. I plan to get some more powerful solar panels and some car batteries with pure sine inverter and charge controller. Cooking is based on kerosene stoves, and also on propane stove with a few 15 kg propane cylinders. I have kerosene pressure lanterns for illumination and some flashligts and search flashlights. A few candles too. For heating I have a kerosene heating stove. And for bad times, a colloidal silver generator. Strongly recommended. Don't forget a good tool kit. It is more important than you think! Thanks for the video and keep up!

I highly recommend replacing the stock antenna on the baofeng with an Xpert power 7.5 inch or 15 inch antenna aka 19mm or 38 mm antenna. It will definitely make a HUGE difference. I also recommend reprogramming the radios with chirp its free software for programming various radios. To program the radios you need the programming cable, their cheap but make sure you get the ones with the good chip in them or they have connection problems... Theirs a few good videos on here that will show you how to do it. Programming the radios means that when you hit the VFO/MR button you can have a mode with set channels you can scan cutting out all the frequencies not generally used in your area. Believe it or not your scanning will stop and pick up an enormous amount of noise on various frequencies due to other wireless devices even things like infrastructure, bluetooth, wifi, fans, microwaves and so-on. But seriously the stock antennas are junk... I just recently tested all the popular antennas and settled with the Xpert power I have the short and long one and run with the long one my self. Longer = better power and better reception but I live in an area with crap signal surrounded by hills... Theirs also some settings you should change in the menu but ill leave that to UA-cam to explain. Ham Radio Crash Course is a good channel for setting up your first Baofeng.

  • @zeebraeend

I would put a map in your kit of the surrounding area (preferably laminated with marker). If not for tactical purposes than for keeping yourself up to date with road closures and problems alike.
Small disclosure, to use hamradios you'll need a license. In most cases you don't need one for listening, but for usage you do. I was wondering if you @SurvivalLilly have a license or if you're learning to get one. After all, it is a good resource to be able to communicate and have practiced it on a regular basis.
P.s. I'm learning for the Dutch novice license...

Ditch candles for light. Buy a Multi-size battery charger, rechargeable batteries, and battery operated LED lanterns/headlamps/flashlights. The charger works with the solar panels.
The batteries last 10 years and can be charged hundreds of times. Also Rechargeable batteries last in colder temps fine and do not leak.

One important thing about the Sayer filter and it won't filter chemicals! Bacteria too some extent yes.
Solar panels are great but they requires a good amount of sunlight too produce the specified amount of power.
Baufeng radios are cheep and works well IF you know what frequencies too snooping on. And of course talking with each other, PMR 446 works ok, get the dual version because then you can listen to you neighbours and listen to your local Ham radio repeaters at the 2m bands.

A barbecue propane or charcoal both have benefits.
A portable 40 litre 12v/24v/240v fridge freezer. Consider a three way fridge freezer (ac/dc/propane)
Good supply of heavy duty electrical extension leads.
An extractor fan with enough ducting so you can run generator indoors and vent exhaust fumes outside, 150mm should be sufficient.
    Fire extinguisher/extinguishers.

as others have said add 1. a larger long term 12 volt storage battery to your system. 2. over the last couple years i have sorted my camping gear into large camp stuff, medium camp stuff, and small camp stuff. the large camp stuff is best used for in house stays. the medium stuff is vehicle use. the small stuff is backpack. look into stocking your basics, sugar, flour, baking powder & soda. than look into what recipes you have on hand. that last 2 days have been having fun trying out home made pita pockets & tortillas. 3 i have a fireplace / wood stove here so i keep a supply of firewood for heat . as i am cooking for these days this spring i took my tiny camp stoves & played around with cooking meals on them at home, using charcoal briquets & wood (streno folding stove & a carri cooker. i ony need 6 briquets to cook with about an hour stove time. where i have around 40 lbs on hand. next up is a weber little joe charcoal grill. 4. on water mention has been made of using your bathtub to stock water. do a tub test first. my house in virginia usa FAILED. filled it one night, by morning the water had seeped out around the drain stopper. have had to use alternate methods sense. so i have 2 of the 7 gallon aqua-tainers that i use for camping as my backup for stocking water. if need be my wine /mead jugs (5 gallon x 2) can be added as well. 5. for easy carrying look at the energy bar / jerky foods on the market these days. here in the usa a cliff bar along with a cliff protien bar will make a good meal. read your labels & dates. another company has added jerkyied chicken & salmon to there line ups.

I try and make all my gear as multipurpose as possible.
My camping stove runs off unleaded petrol as does one of our vehicles and garden equipment so having one fuel source covers multiple uses. I also have cooking backup via a wood stove and gas bbq.
My camping/survival gear gets used for recreation but also serves as a backup in case of power outages etc. while my 4wd could be used to get out of town in the event of things like bush fires.
Likewise lightweight camping lighting can be used in an emergency around the house and camping coolers can be used as backup refrigeration.
We have an old place with a large rainwater storage capacity so there is always some rainwater available if necessary.
Got to look into some solar generation at some point as that is our weakness atm.
Make sure you get the generator out and run it under load at regular intervals. Using fuel and putting in fresh stuff means it should work when you need it. Hook it up to a fridge/freezer or some such and let it run for a while.
Yours doesn't look like it has ever been used.

If you get a Geiger counter, get educated on what it measures. Some measuring scales are for exposure, others for intensity. How much can your body take? the counter is not very helpful if you don't know that... you might end up avoiding an area that is actually still safe and vice-versa.

    • @randomeddie185

You don't need a Geiger counter. They are somewhat rare and expensive, and are used to identify radioactive isotopes.
There is something called a "fallout meter" or "radiation meter" that looks almost identical, but is only used to determine if radiation levels are safe enough for humans. They are much cheaper and will do everything a prepper needs. If you find a used one you'll need to find a specific type of nerd to verify that it still works, but fortunately there is a small but passionate online community of people who build and repair Geiger counters and fallout meters.
Training is still very important, though.

Pick up a solo stove. It only takes a few twigs to boil water. I take mine camping and it's great.
OH yeah and a grayl water filter is great. You just push on it to filter the water. You don't have to wait for gravity to do it for you.

A MUTLI-CHANNEL RADIO, powered by A/C, D/C, battery, solar, and crank is a MUST ! Imagine NOT knowing what is going on, after a SHTF event ! More than likely, TV channels will be "off the air". However, there are literally THOUSANDS of radio stations (plus short wave).

Some simple but good advice I was given.....in the event of a catastrophic emergency the very first thing to do is start running a cold bath - it'll take seconds to do, its ok being left whilst you do everything else and at the very least you'll have a large supply of clean water.

Honestly, you should think about investing in solar generators and power stations that can handle about 1-2 kilowatts so you can power refrigeration units like Dometic fridges, etc. These can power and charge 40v power packs for power tools etc. Worth the investment. Also, you should have a food bank stored up along with multiple fuel sources (alcohol, Wood, propane, etc). I’m not even going to mention the ability to defend yourself and your family and a way to escape quickly and get off the x.

Lilly, how can you forget you'r best friend? You need dog supply's! About the water, all purification methods don't deal whit any chemicals in the water. Stock up on bottled water and rotate that out. After (pre-)filtering it is always good to boil water although it is heavy on fuel consumption, you can't see if your filter is OK, boiling is the safest step AFTER filtering otherwise you are making soup. Run the Genny at least every two months "Stillstand rostet" it is a four-stroke engine that will get the oil where it needs to be. Also rotate the fuel out when adding a fuel stabiler it is good to up to a year, better to rotate it out by putting it in your car and store frech fuel. Try to run that radio of it's solar panel or the hand crank, the 19650 option is way better. About self defence in home think of where in the home you can swing a baseball bat? And how are you gone explain the buch kraft knife in the body of a home invader? What is the reason you have that knife in you bed room? Dit you put it there whit the purpose of harming some one? (This is Europe remember...) If you store all your buch kraft gear there, there is a reason that it is there and that was the first that came to mind as you did hear some strange noises. If the intruder end up whit a diving knife in him and all your SCUBA gear is in the closet next to your bed that is a more reasonable explanation for why you have that knife in that situation than that the rest of your SCUBA gear is in the garage. Also a knife as self defence is a bad idea unless you actually practice whit it! Pepper spray gel (use a gel spray indoor!) is in most countries legally and a hi power flach light is the best option of all, imagine your mother-in-law comes in with the spare key (no bad example) imagine someone you care comes in the house whit the spare key better to light them up first and blind them then to stab them in the dark. After the home invader only sees bleu dot's you can deal whit him whit what ever is in your other hand that happens to be next to your bed. About pepper spray, they arrested a burglar and next to some burglary tools they did find pepper spray on him. I think his intended use of it is when he gets overrun by a home owner to use that pepper spray and run off. Normally during the day I have a half face mask at hand due to a severe environmental intolerance I have to mask up if people whit fabric softener come in to my home or some other sh*t is entering my home like wood smoke, at night I take my full face mask whit me and place it next to my bed whit my hi power flash light and some self defence options. So if I expect an home invader (or my mother in law) I will go down whit my full face mask that will protect me form any CS of OC spray's a 780 lumen output flash ligt and "that was the first thing that came to mind officer." (and there is a good reason for that thing to be there.)

@@Alwaysawarewolf I miss my mother in law every day....bud my aim is getting better! On the self defence I am 51 and havent been living under a rock, just follow the news and you know how European Policing works. They have the exclusive right to violence so every thing you carry or have at hand for the purpose of hurting some else is considered a weapon and thus illegal, however I have the right to defend my self by all means so if I repurposed an object to defend my self that is legal. In Germany you are not allowed to carry pepper spray as self defence only as an animal repellent "Tier abwehr spray" if that intent is not printed on the can you are carrying a weapon. However I case of a threat to life and limb you may use the animal repel spray to fend of an attacker. If you use the offensive it is a weapon that is the idea behind it. I don't only prep for my self and my family but also for the dog he is part of the family. About the urban survival I have bin doing that for a long time and had some small power and water "outs". Chemicals are a NO-NO for me even chlorinated water, the chance of a chemical incident is just as big as an nuclear or radiological event so that is a thing to keep in mind when prepping. Due to my illness I can't go camping any more bud I did keep the butane stove whit two burners and 22 lb of butane also the IR butane heater. have a security plan for the house etc. If I go further than a 10 min. walk from the house my EDC bag is on me. Last years the content shifted a bit more to my illness than urban survival it is, is now 50/50. Come the brown stuff to hit the fan my chances are slim I know that (due to my illness and how it effects my body) But I wont go out without a fight, I came in to this world kicking and screaming and that is the way will leave it. In the mean time I keep shaking my head when I see the tactical mistakes in TV series like The Walking Dead and The 100. Want to learn form other man's mistakes watch Discovery Channel's The Colony ua-cam.com/video/y2vSmje7rhQ/v-deo.html a good read on Urban survival www.amazon.com/When-All-Hell-Breaks-Loose/dp/142360105X O and the SAS survival handbook is on my phone the SAS urban survival (add on to the app) is also on my phone.

That's a pretty good collection of stuff, Lily. Your video prompted me to think about what is my most important piece of home-survival gear. After thinking about it briefly, and of course my house is by far my most important, but beyond that, I almost have to say the bars on my doors and windows. ;-) Now, in my middle-class neighborhood, the authorities and city administrators have allowed it to be overrun with people who are on life's desperate waste pile and have shown they are capable of any transgression to stay among the living. Therefore, my security bars. Of course, I'll continue to think about this awhile and probably change my mind as time passes. But it's sure a good idea to think about your preps, what's important, and that you can handle most any situation, at least for awhile.
