Rod Toth has been promoting this for a while. I started doing it and I've noticed my landing rate has gone up, at the expense of losing a few beads here and there. A worthwhile trade.
Yes! I have read his article about it. A lot of credits to him. I actually get my bead back 9out of 10 times. And cleardrift beads are less than $5 so I can live with that
This method makes sense. I just started salmon fishing and landed a big spring on the t-stop method. The weird thing I don’t get is why doesn’t everyone just use that method you showed since it’s easier to set up and more effective lol. Great channel btw!
Thanks! I think people are not confident in this method since they had luck catching with t-stop method. Hard to change peoples mind. I was the same, skeptical at first but now there’s no going back. Pegging beads is fine too I like this bead on hook method now. It’s simple and versatile.
Thanks for the video! I've always thought that pegging soft beads onto a pre-tied leader was so much work, I always wondered why I couldn't just slide the soft bead right onto the hook, thanks for confirming my idea!
Thanks for sharing. I certainly try it out especially I travel all the way from Europe to catch salmon, steelhead and spring here in Oregon. Appreciate.
I can confirm, this method helped me land more fish this season, however there are 2 cons to it. In low and clear water conditions its better to keep the bead pegged so the hook isn't seen, and second the bead comes off the hook pretty easily, I burned through a bead for every 1-2 fish.
Yup I'm one of the 95%, but will give your method a try as it makes a lot of intuitive sense to me, and I think it will help to reduce (unfortunately not eliminate) the accidental snagging.
Thanks for showing this bead trick, but the hard part is learning how to fish the bead and to get it in the strike zone. Have a video about how to do that.
Great video! I have been trying to land fish drifting the river without any success yet. So weight size, swivel type, etc... Can you please share the rest of your setup for us beginners? Thanks in advance!
In my experience, it's a trade off, I got less bites with this method, but it does provide much better landing ratio. pegging above the hook resulted in more bites, but without a proper hookset, It leads to worse landing ratio.
Great video, thanks! What do you think about the clear drift beads versus the BNR beads? I didn't know clear drift was local, that does make them more attractive but I've never tried them before.
Im convinced! Will try them next season. Any point in heading to the Vedder now or is it pretty well over? The lack of rain recently hasn't helped I guess
Hey Jeff, Noticed in Rods Video, you guys using a smaller handle net which kinda gave you guys issues when landing the fish... what would you recommend if you could choose a longer handle net?
New sub here! Only cuz your a cleardrift comrade like me eheh👍🏽! I swear by their soft beads and they dont pay me to say that either 😆! Though I hardly fish for salmon I will try this on steels this season! Keep it tight lines👍🏽
2 questions I'm a bit curious about, does the fish not feel the hook as the bobber down is a bit delayed? and does this rip/ruin the beads over time? Thanks
I can’t answer about if fish feels the hook or not but I have gotten my bead 9 out of 10 times. It has been working great for me. And cleardrift beads are less than $5 so I can live with loosing a bead or two
@@Go2fishingbc yesterday the conventional peg did the job today was roe…didn’t have chance to experiment new stuff when 10 ppl casting into the same little run that’s only 60ft long😅
Theres pros and cons to both methods, and trade offs. Pegged beads will hardily ever come off, and your hookup ratio is somewhere between 75-80% in my personal experience. Hard beads will pretty much last as long as you donf lose em. You definitely have a higher hookup ratio with soft beads, somewhere in the 90%, but the trade off is that you lose far more plastic beads, on top of not being as stealthy. Sometimes, setting the hook with soft beads will cause it to come off. Also, sometimes i feel like the fish will notice your hook on the bead and avoid it when compared to pegged. Soft beads are also more versatile and convenient to use. After a long time of using both, i usually stick with pegged hard beads, it lasts longer and saves me more money in the long run. I have a pretty good idea of what im doing, so losing one in four fish honestly doesnt affect me, nor would i ever need to constantly switch my beads, since im pretty sure i know which bead to use.
My experience has been that this is generally true, however in gin clear water most fish, especially trout are hook shy and this affects bite rate. Inmho.
Hard beads you peg, soft beads you don't.. You glass bead softs.. And idk why tf he's running the bead on the hook like that ctfu. Gonna hit 10x less fish
There’s multiple techniques to get coho but as far as float goes. I like to start off with roe under a float and then switch to beads after an hr of first light
Yup, placing the bead directly on the hook is gonna make better hook sets just remember to match the size of the bead with the hook 8mm - #4 hook 10mm - #2 or #1 hook 12mm & 14 mm - #1 or 1/0 hook
I had horrible luck with the owner SSW hooks everyone recommended them to me but I lost more fish then I landed and been testing different hooks I have one hook I've been using now for bead fishing I legit haven't lost a fish on it yet and I rig it the pegged way had a 100% land rate so far
@@Go2fishingbc yeah like I said I had a ton of people recommend those hooks but after loosing like 8 fish on those hooks I decided to start trying other hooks I had immediately better success by switching to the gamakatsu octopus hooks but now I'm testing the gamakatsu finesse wide gap hooks as well but the hook that has been getting the job done for me is actually the addicted advantage bead hooks I've had 100% landing success with those hooks rigged up as I always do with a egg loop knot
@@Go2fishingbc yeah verdict is still out on the finesse wide gap hooks but I like wide gap hooks for my fly fishing seems to really help keep fish on so we will see if the same is true for steelhead and salmon with those hooks
Just started salmon fishing last week. Never tried I always went bass and trout fishing for over 3 decades. I asked the guys around the holes and they all told me to use salmon eggs, they’re so smelly and disgusting I’ve been looking into alternatives. I’m going out tomorrow to give this method a try. Stopped at the store and picked up some scented soft beads, I’m really hoping this works because I would prefer to use this rather than salmon eggs
i was at the vedder yesterday and only got one spring after 10 hours on a soft bead and everyone using roe maxed out after only a few hours, id say roe is defenitely better
I am not saying soft beads are better than roe. Roe definitely produces fish. But soft beads are effective as well. There are trade offs. I like roe first light
Most likely a color difference causing the difference in hits OR your bead is floating and you are not seeing the light hits like the direct line roe provides
@@Go2fishingbc If I had to win a contest. I would pick my roe 99.9% of the time. Wool, fake eggs, or beads are my go to for all my fishing for over 8 years. Only run a couple buckets of roe a year on special or long drive trips like 6+ hours.

Noticed in Rods Video, you guys using a smaller handle net which kinda gave you guys issues when landing the fish... what would you recommend if you could choose a longer handle net?
Rod had DK special and it a perfect size for all salmon. I wouldn’t go longer than that since the portability and easier to walk around and bush wack
@Go2fishingbc thank you!!! Also what's a good rod and reel for the Vedder ? Thinking it would be centerpin right?
