- Hello! My name is Bethany and I grow things in my rooftop container garden in Chicago, zone 6a.
In this video, I wanted to give you an update on the sunflowers I have growing in my garden. I have sunflowers in a raised bed, grow bags, and pots and they're all doing really well!

The morning glory is like don't worry sunflower I got your back!
Right 🤣🤣🤣
The yellow pops out because you have a lot of brown on the exterior of your place. The yellow really does stand out beautifully!
Good morning ! One thing I learned. Sunflower seedlings and in bloom can withstand temperatures as low as 28 degrees. Had plants in bloom, with snow on grassy areas. Have a nice one !
My branching sunflowers are soooo tall and I'm 5'3! Whenever I look at the traditional yellow sunflowers, it brings me a happy little joy.
The yellow ones are the ones I remember most from my childhood. I think they’re going to be a staple in the garden now!
I dig the Goldfinch munching on the blooms.
I had the same epiphany about yellow sunflowers. One of the first sunflowers seeds I purchased was moulin rouge and chocolate cherry. My moonflower which is very similar to morning glory is trying to wrap around my dahlia but maybe I'll just leave it! I'm blown away by how healthy your sunflowers look in small pots! I would never think they could look that good because they're so tall.
Also your channel is unique bc a lot of container gardens are focused on vegetables which I like but at heart I'm more into flowers. The more I can test the limits in a small space the better
Edit: I definitely need to fertilize I think. Also I've read warnings about transplanting some flowers but I've never had any issues.
I am shocked at how well the sunflowers have done! Definitely try fertilizing and see if that helps.
Those deep red sunflowers are so pretty.
I absolutely love the color!
It was very interesting to see how well your (cared for!) sunflowers looked in the small pots. The fertilizer seems to be a key factor in that since they have such a small amount of soil nutrition. Thank you for the video--on a whim I just bought some containers and seeds on sale and want to have a fall display of sunflowers but wasn't sure if it would work out.
Beautiful video! Keep It up ☺️🌻 Love sunflowers 💛
Thank you!
Yes ! Fantastic.
Hello Bethany! Have a wonderful garden. I have never tried growing sunflowers in containers. You got a good result. Thank you for the interesting video. Happiness to you and your loved ones. See you🌹👍🌻
Helpful video! I want to use a wall of sunflowers for solar protection in the summer using containers. I plan to use 5-7 gallon grow bags as my primary soil source.
That should work out great! I also like to save my sunflower stalks after I cut them down and use them for supports in the next year’s garden.
I now wish that I grew 🌻 this year! On the list for next year xx
Yes!! Let me know which varieties you go for.
@@ChicagoGardener I will indeed 🌻xx
'Lascht year' is sooo sweet. ❤Greatings from Southwest Germany (where we speak 'last' almost the same way: 'letzschdes').
Germany is on my list of places to visit!
LUV the mans bracelet watch strap. Suits you well
Nice sunflowers. They got high in those pots.
Right!? I was not expecting that at all.
Hi, I transplanted sunflowers, last year. I started them in solo cups, in a greenhouse. When the soil was warm, I just buried the cup, pulled it out, cut off the bottom of the cup, cut up the side, put it back in the hole and carefully pulled the sides of the Solo cup up. It barely disturbed the roots. They didn't show any signs of transplant shock and they grew huge!
I’m finding that more and more plants that are recommended not to transplant do fine when they are transplanted!
Very true on above and transplanting warnings. I had success on direct winter sowing. Also doing no till sunflower grows by pre-sprouted seed planting, into municipal compost. Chicagoland.
Ur dam gorgeous
Hats of to your beauty, skills,
Knowledge. ❤
Ive been collecting pickle buckets from my job 😂😂😂 ofcoarse my managers tell me when they bloom they want bouquets lol i havent had any success but this is encouraging. New sub here!
I’m glad you’re here!!
Love the Sunflowers! And that cart is absolutely gorgeous!
It’s my favorite addition to the garden this year for sure!
Amazing 😻
So beautiful
“My morning glory” hahaha
Very nice information
so beautiful garden very nice
Thank you!!
Beautiful sunflowers! I also container garden on a deck, I am in zone 6a. I had luck this year growing Procut series sunflowers in self watering pots, they were so beautiful and bloomed so early- end of June early July for some. I grew Procut plum, red, and orange sooo pretty and long lasting as cut flower.
End of June, that’s amazing!! I need to check out those varieties.
There's a UA-cam flower farmer woman who has shown where ProCut varieties can be planted with seeds right next to each other. Bloom size is determined by plant spacing.
Execelente video
QUESTION: I will be planting in ground(clay soil) and want to use a solar drip water system (max 1.3L/min). How many gallons do you water each plant and how often? I was reading that you should only 'deep' water them once or twice a week. Suggestions are very welcome. Thank you
Since I grow in containers, I water anywhere from every 3 days to every day depending on the weather. Since you’re planting in the ground and clay soil holds more water, I’d start with a gallon per week and monitor your plants. If they need more or less, then you can adjust from there.
You're pretty 🤩you looks like lady Gaga 😍
Thank you for sharing! Great video! If I'm starting in a container should I only plant 1 seed or can I do more?
Depends on the size of the container! I did only one is my pots 12” diameter or smaller but I fit 9 in a raised bed.
This is my first year ever growing sunflower and I don’t understand why most of the stems grow wonky and not straight up. Only one out of four is growing straight up. The others are wonky. Have you experienced that? You have beautiful sunflowers you have such a green thumb.
Having enough space in the pot and getting enough sun can be factors.
@@saiikik2727 finally started growing and I got a beautiful bloom. Next morning the huge bloom was gone. I think it could have been a crow. At least I have a picture of it. 😢😢
Did you grow them on those small containers and just didn't repot them?
I also planted these ifwe plant ibig container we ll get giant flowers i exerienced that
It’s amazing how big they can still grow even in containers!
How did that sunflower grow so large in a 3 gallon pot?!! Mine grow like bonsais in small pots! I get tiny little flowers that barely even go to seed because they're so small lol.
I wish I knew! I think it was just luck bc I was definitely not expecting them to get that large in a small pot.
@@ChicagoGardener Definitely seems like luck. I'll leave this one up to the Myth Buster's.
My sunflower bloomed but soon they die ..they are in full sunlight I give cow dung and npk once a month and water they every day because the weather is dry and hot here..but I don't know why they die after bloom 🥺please help me what should I do?
Did the entire plant die or just the flower? Flowers on the plant last for about 20ish days.
No entire plant do not die only flower I mean ray of flower .. And it's a single flower plant..if I cut this and do the new flower grow or bloom?
Thank you so much for your answer
No aphids 😮 !
I don’t want to jinx it, but I never have a huge issue with aphids.
