Unfortunately victim shaming is such an integral part of society mindset, even forward thinking people sometimes don't realise it. What I am going to say next is likely to be controversial. When I was watching the video of Bhavana's interview with Barkha Dutt, she spoke about how people tried to pull her down blaming her for being out "late" at that time. And she too was going through a period of self doubt on how it could be her fault. Thankfully she was able to get around that. However a statement she made kind of struck me - something along the lines of "It wasn't even that late, it was just 7PM." My first thought was it doesn't matter if it was 7 PM or 2 AM in the night, the only person at fault are the perpetrators of the crime. I absolutely admire her for her courage to speak up and to fight for justice, and I do not want to take away anything from that. And in a later interview, she did say that she has a counter question to such people, " Do you think a woman won't get assaulted at 10AM?" I am just trying to point out that a lot needs to change in our society, media, justice system, our conversations in family and so on, so that the blame is put squarely on the shoulders of the criminals. And that they are punished appropriately for their crimes.
I hate the people who puts all the blame on the victim. They all focus on the victim and what they did and what they dinot did . Unfortunately victim shaming is such an integral part of society mindset, even forward thinking people sometimes don't realise it. What I am going to say next is likely to be controversial. When I was watching the video of Bhavana's interview with Barkha Dutt, she spoke about how people tried to pull her down blaming her for being out "late" at that time. And she too was going through a period of self doubt on how it could be her fault. Thankfully she was able to get around that. However a statement she made kind of struck me - something along the lines of "It wasn't even that late, it was just 7PM." My first thought was it doesn't matter if it was 7 PM or 2 AM in the night, the only person at fault are the perpetrators of the crime. I absolutely admire her for her courage to speak up and to fight for justice, and I do not want to take away anything from that. And in a later interview, she did say that she has a counter question to such people, " Do you think a woman won't get assaulted at 10AM?" I am just trying to point out that a lot needs to change in our society, media, justice system, our conversations in family and so on, so that the blame is put squarely on the shoulders of the criminals. And that they are punished appropriately for their crimes.
