- Authorities in Colorado are warning the public not to use the blue USPS out door mailboxes after many reports of theft and a Boulder man was taken into custody.
Whats the point if you don't hit them with a federal crime. At least 40 years in jail.
This is a federal offense.
Tell the news-reporters; they seem unaware of that fact.

Without enforcement, laws are meaningless and the criminals have been empowered to do stuff like this because even if they do get caught, they'll get a key to the city, millions of dollars 'for being harassed by the unfair police', and a medal of honor from the Judge for how wonderful a human being they are. In stead of that route I'd rather see them go back to offering banking services as well to better enable many communities that still have post offices, but are only dominated by the worst of banks preying on less fortunate communities.

I had a maid who stole my mail. We set up a stings where the mail carrier was able to see her take my mail and document it. In the end, they did NOTHING because she stole nothing of value. It was just bills. I lost respect for the USPO after that.

Instead of going to the USPS, you should have pressed charges with the police. Mail Theft is a federal crime regardless if it had anything of value.
You’re supposed to file a police report against them after gathering the evidence.
The post office is like working for the police force, they will always cover their own to keep their reputation good. If yall only knew how much mail the postal service throws away just to say it was delivered in time cause they dont want to pay the overtime needed. supervisor throw it away and clock employees out that are still on the clock just for management bonuses at the end of year fatter for their own pockets. Also the union steals a lot of money also.

Wait for what? Our building management hired a temp who was put in charge of opening the mail with the rent checks. She stole quite a few - depositing them in her own bank somehow.
It was only found out two years later when the building management demanded "overdue rent payments" from us and we were able to get copies of the stolen checks.

What happened to the good ol days where the biggest crime to do with a blue USPS mailbox was when a kid threw garbage in it by accident?
Know USPS workers who told us how crooks were putting sticky rodent traps into the blue boxes to fish out checks from bills. This was 15-20 yrs ago. Recently neighborhood boxes were installed with sprung teeth in the slots to combat fishing. My wife pays bills online & her credit cards have been hacked several times. Crooks are running the game & we're mere playing pieces.

Can we take a second to talk about how unwise it is for a news agency reporting on a guy making counterfeit keys to just post a macro shot of the key in question for everyone in existence to know how to duplicate it?
You only need the physical dimension of the keyway, grab a screen capture of that close-up of the key, scale the image to those dimension, make an outline in CAD and send it to a 3D printer or CNC machine. Boom, instant keys.
That's why they tell you not to post clear images of your house or car keys to social media...

Those keys clearly say “Do not duplicate”. It’s a federal crime classified as a felony. They don’t consider the consequences cause it’s easier than finding a job!

The real trick is to find out what the cuts are and that actually takes skill to duplicate. They're also federally illegal to own so you'll automatically go to federal prison if you have a printout. Federal courts also have a 95+% conviction rate so good luck 👍

Yes, and this has happened before. However, the issue was corrected immediately before that many theft incidents occurred and the public was never alerted.The current arrow key being used in the Pacific region, had to be copied then turned back in. Too many thefts have occurred . Usually, if an arrow key is not turned in by whom it was signed out by, or not accounted for each day.The inspection service is immediately notified and appropriate steps are taken. Sanctity of, and trust in the mail is the cornerstone of the USPS. With out it, the postal service will crumble. This is not good.

If by some chance you accidentally took those keys home you had to turn around and bring them back to the station or you got a visit from a postal inspector. And God forbid you lost them you were history! Management had the fear of God in us😳

Now all I get is junk mail coupon crap from the postal service. I asked them to stop it but they said that’s how they make money.
Well 99% of my bills and other important mail comes to me online now. Takes 3-4 months or more for my lockable mailbox to be filled with their crap when I’m away instead of two weeks.

My point being is now the Post Office doesn’t print the value on the stamp, and they have frequent rate increases, people don’t notice that increase that much because there is no monetary value printed on the stamps anymore.

I live in southern California and I haven't used those mailboxes for years. If I need to mail something I go to the Post Office and I go inside and drop the mail in an inside mail slot. They have five or six blue mailboxes in the parking lot but people still steal mail out of those mailboxes. Mail theft is a huge problem here. I see people online saying they had packages stolen from their porch too. Sometimes the thieves follow the mail carrier around and when they turn a corner the thieves go around looking in mailboxes. It's time for the feds to start doing something. It should be a mandatory five year prison sentence for these idiots.

This has been reported happening where I live as well, so I now avoid dropping mail in the street side boxes. I haven't had any problem with mail picked up from my house or deposited inside the P.O.

Post office could care less. My mail handler has been leaving our neighborhood mailbox open between the first and third of the month, is how it started. Now, it seems to be when there are a lot of packages. And always around Christmas. I took pictures, video and everything. Local pd: not our jurisdiction, FBI: call the post master, Post Master of Las Cruces: ok we will get to it, U.S. Postal Police: you’ll have to complain to the local post master, and Finally PostMast Generals Office of the US: NO RESPONSE. 13 years later and the same mail carrier is still doing this and nothing has ever been done.
Have you considered taking pictures & reporting it to local news? Embarrassed officials find motivation where they previously had none!
There’s a lot of theft going on inside the postal service too, I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re doing it on purpose.

I filed complaints twice related to missing packages and important mail getting lost to an indoor mailbox at a USPS office. They don't care.

This is a direct result of stopping the rigourous hiring standards for government positions. Hiring everything out, contracting, third-party. You should take a look at Social Security, that place is filled specific kinds of people giving disability to specific kinds of people and completely refusing it to others who should have it.
Amazon uses USPS a lot
More often than not, my packages arrive tampered from the USPS. I'm taking video when I pick up my packages now.
USPS is still the best carrier except for the restrictions that other carriers don't have.

Better than nothing, but cameras are too often not placed in good locations, they do not catch faces, and are too far away to get license plates. Don't get a false sense of security.

My church a few years ago, dropped off about 30 gift cards to a grocery store in envelopes to poor members at the post office. None of them arrived at their destination. It was reported to the post office with no result.

I live in SW Ohio and last year, 2 mail carriers were robbed of their keys. 1 in Cincinnati and 1 in Covington Kentucky. That's a lot of access to a lot of mail that's not theirs. It's a HUGE problem

Its already illegal to steal destroy damage hide and what not other peoples mail. There are many laws that exist to protect mail which is considered private property, these laws are broken often apparently.

I personally blame this on the postal service, first you dare not tell the public that these keys are the master key to open any mail box, second you change the collections box so it takes two different keys to unlock. I worked for the postal service for many years and I suggested over 25yrs ago for them to make different keys for every zip to have their own master keys. If not then every three set of zip codes to have the same master key. There for you would know which area to cover for possible theft. But know they said was to cost effective, but carriers losing their lives is not worth it

Had my CO state tax refund check stolen from mailbox at Ascend apartments in Lakewood about 2 years ago. I contacted DOR immediately and they cancelled the check and issued me a new one. No sign of damage to the mailboxes at the apartment so assuming it was someone with one of these keys.
Or it was misdelivered to a neighbor and they kept it. Years ago, credit cards used to mail out checks implying it was free money but it was a loan on your card. I saw the charge on my card, and I was able to get it reversed, but I knew how it happened. I was living in an apartment building with twelve units, and three of us have very similar last names, and I was always getting the other two’s mail. Problem disappeared once I moved.
@@AverageJillM Not in this case. The entire complex got their mail stolen one night. USPS confirmed we were victims of theft as they had delivered the mail per usual. Same thing that was happening during the disbursement of the COVID relief checks.
We had a couple carriers in an office I was in busted for stealing government checks. Even one manager was busted for theft.
I'm in Southern California and my town experienced such mail theft a few years ago. You would think the USPS would add video cameras focused on the blue mailboxes and monitored by a security company that could notify the local police. Nope, instead the USPS removed all of them, even the one outside the local post office! A couple of them were drive up which had been convenient for me since I have a walking disability.
SoCal here too. Our mailboxes were removed about ten years ago. Video cameras are useless because the thieves wear hoodies & masks. And try getting the police to come out...good luck with that!

Someone broke into my apartment's mail boxes once. No key needed. The post office took their sweet time replacing it. Everyone had to go to the post office to pick up their mail in person.
We're in the OKC area & between the stolen USPS mailbox keys and people "fishing" stuff out of the blue boxes, we've been dropping off our mail inside our post office weekly for the past couple of years.

I'm surprised to see Boulder PD making arrests. We had video of mail theft from our box a couple of years ago and the Aurora PD wouldn't even come out. They said it was a federal issue and we were told to call the Postal Inspectors (who never returned my call).

Yeah, I was a mail carrier for 13 years and never had a problem getting robbed. Now it happens all the time.
I'm in Southern California. Last year on my morning walk I noticed several pieces in the road and picked them up, thinking someone had just dropped them. There were four bills being paid, but the checks that had been in the envelopes were gone. I tracked down the senders (always put a return address on the envelope!) and all had been dropped in the same blue box the day before. The thief used a long wire with adhesive to pluck them out.
I take the few bills I pay by snail mail to the post office. My brother has all his delivered to a POBox and he can see pictures of them before going to pick them up.

Cause mail delivery person didn't deliver them. I cancelled them and had then resent to my daughter's address 6 month later the postal worker was arrested for mail theft. Had made quite a career of stealing mail. I'd guess they got probation if even that

Sometimes they steal them from postal workers out on a route. Sometimes it’s an inside job with a corrupt postal worker.
That's the right question, because spending hundreds of thousands on new locks and keys really isn't going to help if it's easy for criminals to just get ahold of the new ones.

A check was stolen from my nephew's christmas card last year. Thief just resealed the envelope, so my nephew got the card. He told his grandfather there was no check and obviously the crime was committed within the post office. The thief also started passing forged checks with the grandfather's name on it.
They also white wash checks.

I've been seeing mail collection boxes sealed or removed, even the boxes in front of post offices in our area. I immediately thought, the right dishonest postal employee finally allowed someone to copy the arrow key. If it was lost or stolen, the inspection service would have known immediately and taken immediate steps to prevent. That arrow key is extremely guarded. If an arrow key is not turned in at the end of a shift for any reason, the postal inspection service is to be immediately notified and whoever didn't turn it in to the accountable clerk would be immediately suspended pending investigation, possible charges and termination. Back in the 90s an arrow key was stolen from a carrier in an armed hold up. Every lock had to be replaced in the affected districts , immediately. The public never knew.
I went to a small town (400 people) high school in the 70s, and a kid shot a BB through the Post Office window. Two FBI agents were out investigating the scene of the crime by the next day. They found the suspect and threatened to arrest him. He ended up just paying for the window.😂

I stopped putting mail in public mailboxes years ago. I saw people throw food in them. I saw people throw dirty clothes in them. I saw people throw ice cream cones in them, and water in them and try to get in them themselves. There’s no way I would put my mail in a mailbox outside. I walk it inside the post office or I walk inside the post office.
I have also heard men use them as urinals.
So if you think I’m gonna put my mail in there, you be mistaken.
