A side-by-side, shot-for-shot comparison between the trailer for Dune (2020) and the 1984 film adapted from the same novel by Frank Herbert. This video is meant to show the variety of choices made by two different groups of filmmakers 36 years apart when adapting the same written work.

@Cpt Falcon Realistic... Ok
The Villeneuve version is undoubtedly more beautiful, but I respect Lynch for making it in 1984.
I have not seen 2021 version yet, but I agree about the respect for 1984 version, because it was the first adaptation to make it to the screen. All other previous attempts since the 1960's were not greenlit. And of course, 1984 version were able to do all special effects without CGI, because that did not exist yet & the effects & physical set designs were still amazing, thanks to all the carpenters & electricians etc that were hired.
No, it’s not. This director cut a lot of corners, considering it’s only half of a movie. Lynch’s is more epic.
@@pamcoyer9582 by making it only half the book he’s able to add more scenes to the film. I just hope it doesn’t turn into Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit. At least this book is large enough to be split up
@@Jasminehodge637 ... Yes, the Villeneuve version was able to do what the Lynch version was originally planned to do, which was to split it into 2-3 parts. This was originally discussed in the late 1970's when Ridley Scott was still the hired director, a few years before Lynch got hired. So in a way, the Villeneuve version REDEEMS what the Lynch version was not able to do. It was Universal Picture's fault for cutting it down from 2-3 parts down to 2 hours, not Lynch or DeLaurentis. This really disappointed Lynch & he had to cut out a lot of the script that was already there, crunching down a 400-page book plot to a confusing mess for audiences who had never read the novel. Such a shame, the Lynch version could have been better, even with some artistic deviances from the novel. Frank Herbert was on the set, so he did also help as much as he could, despite the further shortening length of the film by the distributor.
Lies. Where's the colors? The textures? Etc? His version is empty, bland colors, souless, bad acting. etc.
Despite all its flaws, Lynch's Dune has a unique dreamlike atmosphere emphasized by the superb Eno and Toto compositions.
Defintely...visionary masterpiece, and in terms of story and philosophy more deep than the Villenevue one (which I think is anyway not that bad at all, estetically speaking)..and in same amount of time the Lynch's movie condensed an entire saga
Which flaws ? because if you referr to the fact that a lot of material was missing, there is a seriously long version which entails much more material with some beautiful elements that sadly never made it into theatres.
I love Eno's work, but Hans Zimmers soundtracks for the dune movie also are not to despise...
Eno was in there? I'll need to look up the tracks because I had no idea he was part of the film
@@victorha9923 He composed the Prophecy Theme which can be heard when the highliner arrives at Dune.
Not going to lie, that cut was masterful

@@TheShockwave44 exactly. idk why people say that dumb crap alot now a days.
I think Lynch did a fabulous job, but it would have been impossible to do the original story justice with the available technology at the time. It just wasn't ready to be made.
I feel the original contained 100x as much magical weird-dream atmosphere as the new one, which looks indistinguishable from any tedious space Western.
@@laurabien4809 I will have to disagree, It doesn a weird feeling that's not so common. The aesthetic is more in line with modern productisns, sure, but that's because It's new, It's from a different era. 1985 Dune also looks more like It's contemporaries
@Cpt Falcon they didnt remake blade runner at all. 2049 is unique compared to the original film. Its a sequel. Also dune from the 80s is literal shit. The excessive use of voiceover to complete what could have been done visually as is done in the new film. The characters just arent suited at all to what they should be according to the book. I.e. the barron and gurney. Just a terrible film, not adaptation...film
yes lets all pretend the author itself hated the first movie adaptation
@@peter4210 just coz the author said it was ok doesnt make it good lmao. it was good because it was the only adaptation at the time...
I just watched the original and really liked it, even though its basically a set up for sequels to come. That being said some of the composite shots from the original are truly breathtaking considering how old they are
Its also very 80s though. Dune deserved a more serious tone and the tone of the first is definitely more campy. It is still good for Dune fans but it was definitely not the definitive edition and got panned for that reason. Dune is a story anyone could love but the old one, in its campiness, made it too weird and nerdy for the general audience. I don't mind that per se but I definitely find it silly while Dune is a very serious, character driven, philosophical take on politics and the exploitation of indigenous peoples. It deserved, and finally got, that gritty serious tone it needed. I really believe that Game of Thrones, LOTR, The Star Trek reboots, the Dark Knight Trilogy, The Joker, The Witcher, and the MCU paved the way for that. The are more serious character dramas with backdrop of nerdiness everyone ended up liking it, including hardcore nerds. This picked up the baton from there. These retellings of classic nerd culture in a more serious tone is what this "genre" of nerdy stories is exactly what all of us wanted so that we could share these gripping, amazing stories with the rest of the world, and honestly, its good that the campy nerd movies are a thing of the past. They definitely have there merit and can be good sometimes, but these are just better films with more gripping drama and more interesting characters.
Is another version, No a remake.
@@themakerstoolbox9688 no...better lynch version...the two compared show immediately the quality of the older version and the crap lights of the new one.... bye bye
@@bucran0 The lighting is crap? This is dark subject matter about warring factions and the lighting reflects that. If you are a fan of the original novel you will see that it is more closely related with the themes of the novel. Game of thrones was lit in the same way. Both have good lighting for different reasons but the new one is much more gritty, realistic, and closer to the themes of the original novel. Frank Herbert wrote a space opera filled with fucked up people doing fucked up things to further their own goals. Including Paul at points. It is a coming of age story set in a grim dark world. The lighting is perfect for that. Imagine if a 40k movie was lit like the first one. I am not saying it is bad lighting but it was trying to draw in audiences who expected campy sci-fi. This is a realization of the source material and shows/tells it as it is.
@@bucran0 I also don't think any lighting is straight up crap. This is art and it is subjective. The director had a vision in both of them and they kept that vision throughout. It might not be your cup of tea but it's not straight up crap. Even the room had good lighting for what it was going for. It was going for a grounded realistic vibe and the lighting shows that, even though it is shotty at points.
If it weren't for Lynch's Dune I might never have been introduced to science fiction books. When I saw it was based on a book I ran to my school library and found a copy. Decades later and it is still one of my favorite books/series.

The 1984 film had plenty of issues but the visual style and most of the casting was pretty damn good. There are clear stylistic choices made between the 2020 and 1984 film in the clips here but I wouldn't say either is outright wrong or right. With the 1984 you do have to accept the technology available for effects at the time.
That said I am greatly looking forward to the 2020 film. I still will watch the 1984 on occasion based on the excellent production value and visuals despite the mangling of the story.
I LOVED the costumes in the 1984 version! The only thing lacking was script and direction.. and shouldn't have been only one movie, they jammed too much in it
I would love to see an 84 cut without the internal voice overs. See if that affects the pacing and the distribution of information.
Patrick Peterson the problem is the voiceovers were used to convey an awful lot of information which the book could easily convey. Knowing the book you do not need it so much but for a movie for broad appeal you would have to convey that information somehow.
I am really looking forward to seeing how this film handles it.
damn i havent seen it yet. Was born 11 yers after it came out ha! But seeing this 2020 trailer i randomly saw the old school dune on hbo just sitting there. Im gonna check it out in a bit. I had no single idea of the previous dune film nor the book but oh my i watched the new one in IMAX yesterday and it was phenomenal. It’s epic and visually stunning of a half complete story. Once again Denis Villeneuve and Warner Bros present an amazing film. It’s my best film of 2021 so far. Can’t wait for second installment and yeah WB have basically confirmed the second part.
you should definitely read the book though, it adds a lot more depth.
@@123four... Yeah, the movie skipped stuff and the movie is about 3/4 of the book.

It's multiple veiws of the same story, from multiple era, seeing it in similar-yet-unique ways.
And you can certainly see how much both of them adore the source material.
2021 Dune is certainly my favorite movie of the last couple years though, what an incredible experience in the theater
The thing is; I love all of the interpretations of Dune for different reasons. I love the 1984 Lynch version and the 2000 mini - series and its sequel "Children of Dune;" which I own all three And I am sure I will love the 2021 version when I see it.
Same here!
Even though I think you can drag in certain spots In the movies absolutely beautiful and it really makes you feel like you’re in that world hopefully everything goes great with the next production and we get a whole series of movies
It can drag*
Share the same sentiment! I was able to appreciate something in every version but especially the miniseries in 2000 because the director as well as the company responsible for its production were intelligent enough to know that one film was not enough to cover all the material from the books; which also makes me appreciate that Denis Villenueve was wise enough to recognize the same as well. Here's to hoping the sequel gets the greenlight as well as the proposed series for HBO Max on The Sisterhood of The Bene Gesserit.🙏
The way it looked in my minds eye was somewhere between the three versions, and incorporates aspects of each, but none precisely and when I read it, I found myself experiencing a loneliness throughout the period shown in Dune 2021. I will say that Timothee Chalamet is incredible. When he's onscreen I have trouble watching anyone else. Rebecca Ferguson is the same, but she is still eclipsed by Chalamet - at least for me. I love this series. I'm so glad that Denis seems to feel about it as Peter Jackson did about Lord of the Rings. He has a true reverence for the source material.
The new sandworm design is straight up nightmare fuel the way it just sits there is so ominous and it's like you're looking at a living, breathing god , can this movie just PLEASE come out already

The victorian age inspiration is so amazing and have a sense in a universe were the computer technology is banned.
the lynch dune in all its quirkiness is still better because a ton more original than many present day movies - possibly even Villeneuve's dune.
This is reminding me how much I adored the 1984 version as a kid. CGI and length clear limitations, but it had an iconic look to it and Kyle MacLachlan imprinted on me as a kid. Not to mention the score. I'm still pretty fond of it. Can't wait for the new one. Happy that Villeneuve has made something that already looks distinct to me.
@@kheldroona7970 you got all that from the trailer? LOL at least wait till the movie comes out to make such bold claims.
Imago Gestalter I just reread the book last month and everything was recognizable and easy to follow down to the page nearly. To the point I thought the trailer gave too many key moments away but maybe it’s just me. And we haven’t even seen the areas that show more wealth and waste. I wouldn’t mind more regency style uniforms with a big more pomp or a battle pug or two but I think the real smack across the face is going to come when they contrast the two houses. And we’ve only really seen one closer yet. A nice touch with the stone carvings showing the age of the family line. And they’ve not even got to Imperial Court entourage.

It’s kind of incredible how some of these shots sync up so well, they were like nearly identical. Two directors, decades apart but I guess on the same creative wavelength in a sense.
I guess because they're both adapted from the same source and the trailer shows dramatic moments from the film which are likely to be found in the book so long as the adaptation is relatively faithful
Yeah, but think about it. Which one was first and probably used as a resource. Not a coincidence shots are similar.

Or, just hear me out, MAYBE THE SECOND DIRECTOR watched the first Dune for reference and copied some things??? Dude come on you make it sound like the two films where created completely independent of each other without the one influencing the other.
Lynch's cut has some visually impressive moments, but lacks the pacing and story building that makes the new one so great.

“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”

We probably would have gone extinct long ago without fear. Even if it has the potential to backfire at times it's a survival tactic that's proven effective enough to stick with us and countless other species for millennia.
@@Dratio I completely disagree. Fear causes people to make unnecessary mistakes. People who face their fears are stronger, and more capable of self defense. In fact, there are some people who evolved to be completely fearless, and usually those people are the most capable surgeons, police officers, soldiers, etc.
Without fear we are nothing more than a virus on this earth. Fear makes the diffrence.
This video really advertises how great and under-appreciated Lynch's version is.
Es impresionante la diferencia de años que tienen estas 2 producciones y aún así te emocionan 😮
Great comparison!! I've seen the original when it first came out in 1984
For all the shit Lynch’s film gets - Denis clearly has some reverence for it.
He tooks the best parts and fix the worst
You guys do realize that both films are adaptations on the book, and Denis has reverence for the book and the author, right?
@@Meta-trope Yeah. These claims would be much easier to falsify if they were even remotely specific.
@@hexcodeff6624 I fail to understand what you mean.
@@Meta-trope I mistook reverence for reference.
the modern aesthetics in the 2020 version definitely fits more with the times, while the zaniness of Lynch's version similarly speaks to the 80s. They're both amazing in their own ways
I do prefer the Lynch aesthetic. It has this... Weird retro sci-fi vibe I always had in mind while reading the book. Especially the outfits.
Zaniness? What are you talking about? The aesthetics of this film was something completely foreign, alien to the 80's generation. It was bold, and original, looking away from its current time. Were you alive in the 80's?
@@gerardlacroix6015 Yeah, Lynch's Dune nails the costumes and the noir-baroque art design (even for some space ships!) really sold me on the concept of empires thousands of years old. I am....puzzled that with the exception of a few sets, most things in the new trailer seem so incredibly _flat_ and disposable. Like the armor seen on Isaac's Leto. The duke of a royal family at least 10,000 years old wearing featureless plain armor. Apparently without even the Atreides family crest. Very, very puzzling!
Nope, wrong.
@@signx He obviously was not.
I really love that the new film is so diverse. It makes it that much more believable. People from a desert planet being more tan or brown makes sense and just plays into the plot so well. Seeing this skinny, pale boy come to your planet and hearing hummings that he'e the Messiah must feel impossible when he looks nothing like you, and your people, who are basically a symbol of strength and resourcefulness and stubborn undying despite being hunted and marginalzied by all kinds of conquerors and ruling classes. That small detail immersed me that much more. It plays on the class struggle and drives home the insider v. outsider feeling even more than just the blue eyes alone could.
Still, I hate how movies don't respect the original material and take too much liberty with changing characters. For example, I believe Dr. Kynes is originally a white guy in the books, but on the new movie is portrayed by a black woman. I really don't get the need for these changes other than for political reasons, which is fucking annoying.
i'll give props to Dune for at least not changing the core behaviour and essence of these characters, even with all the liberties they took with them
@@MrDaves95 damn i hate when they add women, too political for me
@@MrDaves95
> they don’t respect original material

@@goonboyx who the fuck cares if they add women. In the books the character is a man though. Why does it need to be changed to a woman in the movie? Like who cares about the race and gender of a character, just try to follow the source material to the letter.
@@goonboyx And I would have the same reaction if the roles were reversed, like for example if a character got retconned to white male in black panther, while in the comics they are a black female. That wouldn't make any fucking sense and would be annoying too
Wonderful video! Thanks!!
1984 Dune is a movie I endlessly love, I watch it every 1-2 years. As a lot of people here have said, this cut does it much respect. Thank you OP!
I think people forget about budgets and technology at the time. It was only budgeted for 1 money of around 2 hours. It's hard to compact Dune into 2 hours. They did a good job. I liked there choice of actors. Kyle MacLacklin did a great job the actress that played Chani. I don't see care for their choice of actors on this new one.
To be honest, Villeneuve has told the story better, more clear, more spectacular. And Lynch showed us dark, mystic dream of distant future.
Dune 84 is a movie I grew up with that I have a fondness for. I too, watch it every now and then and still think it's great.

Just watched the new Dune. They leave out some stuff the original had in it and made the first battle scene much longer. Skipped a lot from the first but somehow it is longer. Watched a fan edit of the original on UA-cam. They managed to include long forms of many scenes. Definitely gives more info then both original 1984 and the new one. At least the first part of the new one. It is more clear in the fan edit for the motivation of the Emperor and the Jesuits. Highly recommended.
Good job Matt! There are many of us who loved the Lynch version no matter what others said about it. The opening with princess Irulan monologue was bone chilling till this day.
Really goes to show how far films have come!
Maravilloso! Gracias por compartir.
Great job on this video. The only thing I would change is to include the sound from both movies and not just the new one. That's especially important with the original movie due to the variety of accents by the actors. It gives the original Dune an other worldly ambiance.
It's also extremely clear that the original 37 year old Dune, even with all its faults, stands up so very well compared to the new one. Arguably, the sets of the original movie are so much more richly detailed and beautiful. That's pretty amazing.
I noticed the 1984 Gurney Halleck (Patrick Stewart) with the Atreides battle pug. The 2020 Dune trailer didn’t have the Atreides battle pug.
Atreides Battle Pug might be the best name for a metal band ever...
Gurney was doing a lot of running so he brought his own Chairdog.
