- On the 1st of December I went to buy some cheese, the only thing was the cheese was 60 miles away in Somerset. So being me, I decided to make a trip of it and camp for the night, even though the weather was due to be below zero!

The question inevitably will be 'why?', but I understand the reasons. Thank you for an indulging us in excellent little adventure and a great showcase for both the products used and the managed approach to the risks involved. You're a medical professional and so you can make good judgements as to level of personal risk, and keep aware of your situation. I really enjoyed coming along from the comfort of my sofa. Winter is very challenging for motorcycling in the UK, but you've showed that it doesn't have to be a complete no-no. Roger is not the garage queen!
and it's even more challenging in Switzerland. Many never get to ride through the winter, having to wait till March/April..., so those days with dry road-days in the UK Winter, would be very welcoming for Swiss riders.

So a biker in December (when trade is low) walks into a cafe and asks for a cup of tea. Sorry we are closed. No it was open you walked in! Welcome to English hospitality! Well she missed a trick there didn't she with your vlog? I certainly won't bother with that one next time I am in Chedder, some businesses deserve to fail. Thanks for the vid really enjoyed. PS can't understand why you get the views but not many thumbs up.🤔
Thank you! I'm not sure either, maybe it's because I don't ask for the thumbs, maybe I should! 🫣
Can’t believe on a freezing day in chedder you walk In to a cafe as there closing & they couldn’t be bothered to even offer to make you a tea or coffee? UNBELIEVABLE!! Must of made a fortune that day then!! Excellent video Charlie I don’t think I would willingly go camping in that weather! Fair play to you!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻
Crazy lady camping in Dec just for some cheddar 😋 Another enjoyable video of you and Roger out in the countryside.
How about this one then ,
Some years ago my late wife and I ran a small shop in Great Dunmow Essex , one afternoon when all eateries had shut a small group asked where they could eat ; my wife said she could make them a sandwich and cups of tea for which they were grateful , ( we were a leather shop )when they had finished they said thankyou and left . WITHOUT EVEN ASKING IF THEY COULD PAY ! . you live and learn .
Might have helped if she had removed her helmet first .
I am sitting here in my easy chair asking myself "Why".
Because she can...pretty straight forward. So many new gadgets and products Charlie.
Gorgeous weather and footage of your adventure.
I ran a boys camping program 40 years ago and did my share of sleeping on the ground.
" How on earth do you do it?"
Scares me to death to think your riding frosty roads. God bless you.
We are not worthy.
Seriously Charlie, hats off to you not only for doing it but for sharing your story so well with us. Your vids just get better and better for story, content and imagery.
Its so nice to see soneone have the passion and enjoyment out of life. Thank you
Wow, thank you 😊
This brought back memories of bike rallys during the winter when I was younger & my bike was my only transport, I did many winter rallies up & down the country. One in particular springs to mind which was held in the grounds of Tutbury castle, I was on a little 150cc Francis Barnett plover. My tent collapsed during the night under the weight of 6" of snow, my ride back home saw me literally covered in ice with no feeling at all in my limbs by the time I got back home to Cambridge. My Dad had to help me off the bike & sit me in front of the coal fire to thaw out, thank goodness he had a roaring fire going when I got home !
Its great memories like this that make motorcycling the best hobby and lifestyle ever(in my opion)😊
Browsing cheese to the flower duet… doesn’t get any better
My sentiments exactly, been looking for an excuse to use that piece of music. 😊
@@restdayridernow have a listen to the pearl fishers duet and find a video for that… incredibly moving piece of music
Well done you 😁......that lady in the cafe should have let you have a hot brew though ....👎....Nice one 👍
Charlie, you never cease to amaze me! Another great trip with great footage as per usual. The only negative was that cafe not making you a quick cuppa , shame on them 😊 stay safe as always 😎
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
Great video .informative and stunning.(though not quite enough to get me out under the winter stars🥶The cheddar loop from bristol is an old fav . usually on a balmy summer's eve , once the tourists have gone for the day .
Because of my CLL Leukaemia l need to watch my temperature. Long story short , l can't get too cold or too hot.
Riding my Honda cb 500s gives me an a sense of Freedom.
I don't think my consultants would agree to me camping in - 5 😊 but l loved this video, very well done.
Great video , in cold weather , remove batteries from electronics if possible and keep em in your doss bag with you , ditto gas can for stove , well planned ahead and good contingency plan . A candle lantern can take the edge off the cold in the tent if used with caution .
Yeah in the summer you can't move, every Tom Dick and Harry and there girlfriends are out. Not too mention the strong police presence at weekends.
That kind of weather and staying outside: Wear wool! Not the thermo polyester stuff, wool from a sheep. Reason: When moist or wet (sweating), wool still stays warm
Brave girl Charlie glad you was warm enough liked the bloons thing I thought they would be solid Great video can you put the go pro in the sleeping bag to keep batteries warm just a thought xx
As someone else said in that cafe how long does it take them to make a cup of tea seconds is how long a woman on her own on a bike they could of cooked something for you as well as 2/3 cups of teas and just said just put a bit of money in the charity box I just don’t understand some people hope you had a good Christmas and new year ride safe take care loving your videos 👍👋👋
Great video, sorry if this comes across the wrong way though, your bike sounds like it's labouring a hell of a lot, not good for it, pick a lower gear and use higher revs 👍
Your airbed will suck heat from your body as the down between you and it will crush. I would recommend a foam matress as well to reduce that.
I used to use a camp bed which never felt as cold as an airbed and even packed up smaller and was much lighter.
Good video shame on that cafe seriously how long would it have taken them to make you a hot drink I will be going to cheddar
But definitely will not be visiting that cafe
2:27 “so I think my plan is, to go to the cheese..”
I have never agreed more
It's a solid plan. 😊
If you have access to hot water then the good old hot water bottle is fantastic. Ha! I write that and two minutes later you are tucked up for the night with one!
To each her own.
But absolutely no fun as far as I'm concerned.
Big thumbs for another great vlog Charlie👍
They would not serve you because you ride a bike fact! 19:25
OMG! Charley, you are a little bit crazy!😂😂😂 I am too scared to ride below freezingpoint. And then get camping!! You are such a badass women❤.
We have a lot of snow now in Sweden so my bike has to rest in our garage.
If you come to Sweden in the future you must visit Osterian in Falköping.
It is a paradise for cheeselovers. A big shop and restaurant full af cheese.
Have a Merry Christmas❤❤❤
Sounds amazing. 😍
Charlie, yet another fabulous vlog! ❤ We're 'cheese fans' too and always looking for the strongest! We hope you enjoyed your purchase. Now, ice-boobs and ice-hedgehogs are part of the language, thanks to you 😂
🤣
great video done the minus 5 stuff once was enough
You’re an inspiration Charlie. Thanks for another excellent vlog. ❤️
Thank you John. 😊
Is this safe? I mean riding a bike in -5 degree Fahrenheit.
-5 degrees CELSIUS. 😊
Long experienced winter camper from the States here. Many camps done at -30. The Mylar emergency blankets are always used with the shiny side toward you, but never in skin contact. They are reflectors, not insulators. Always go for a sleeping bag rated well below what you expect. Those ratings are done by hippies that passed out drunk and could sleep through an ice age. If you get a -30 bag you can skip all the extra crap you use for insurance with the under-rated bag. They are all under-rated.
Heating up a smaller space easier is only valid if you are adding a heat source to that space and it is well insulated/set up. You were only heating the sleeping bag and cover, so the size of the space is irrelevant. You would have been just as warm in the bag if using your Lone Rider.
And the answer to the question WHY is not "because you can", The answer is So You Will Know You Can! You now know you can survive -5 outdoors in relative comfort. You never have to speculate on that ability again.
Some good tips, thank you. 😊
Oh my ...i couldn't see that without feeling of Freezing 🥶
😂...
What a Brave Lady 👏🏻....
I think there's some Spray to used for foggy Glass 👓....its may make it easier to use and see 👀..
Good luck be safe 💐🇸🇦👍🏻
I think the breath in the helmet was just freezing too fast!
I really like your videos. Thank you. I do a lot of solo motorcyckling myself down through Europe each summer. And i'm now considering the UK for the first time. Much after having seen some of your videos. If there's one thing i miss from your videos, it's a better description about where exactly the different places is.
A question for you :-) Are your roads *never* dry?! ;-)
Thank you again for your videos 🙂
That's so nice to hear that you're considering the UK now 😊 And yes, we do honestly have dry roads sometimes. 😂
Hello from Tennessee. I just discovered your channel, and I enjoyed "freezing motorcycle camping-5.
Glad you enjoyed it and welcome to the Channel. 😊
I'm really starting to get off on your sense of humour... and your craziness..., that you seem to be applying to most all of your content ideas.
My brother has just married in Sussex, and it was by no means, a nice day (weather wise), in any which way you wanna look at it, but then again, who gets married in December, I asked myself!!!
And then comes along you, Mrs Charlie, and you decide to go Biking and Camping in December. OMG, how much crazier is the Human Race gonna get?
But oh, how i'm loving this Channel, it's f*%ing marvellous. Carry on carring on, you silly daughter of a bi*%ch..., I love ya and would love to see you hit 15'000 Subs for Christmas. Thx for all so far, S.
Hi, thank you for taking the time to write a comment, and I'm so glad you're enjoying the channel. 😊
Mega impressed, you're such an inspiration. Love your vids, keep them coming. Just a quick question, what boots were you wearing. I'm after something similar and they looked descent. Cheers for now, ride safe 🏍️🏍️🏍️
These are Forma Boots, so so comfy and I've walked miles in them. 😊
Greetings from Australia. I've recently found your channel and liking the videos.
I've noticed that when you film indoors, you get a lot of flickering. There should be a setting on the GoPro to set the power frequency. It looks like yours is set to 60Hz, which is the US standard. The UK (and Australia) use 50Hz. If you set your GoPro to that it should cure the problem.
Hi and welcome to the channel! I will have a look at the go pro settings, thanks for the tip. 😊
Thank you, really enjoyed that. My favourite things included too, riding my bike and camping 😊 Must get myself one of those pumps.
Thumbed and subscribed, thanks again 👍🏻😀
Thank you, and welcome to the channel 😄
FairPlay Charlie.
Showing the guys how it’s done.
How about a cover for poor Roger❄️?
I did mean to take a cover, and forgot. 🫣
I think you are brilliant next time you are in the lakes , I would love to buy you a coffee x
Sounds great! ☺️
Hi Charlie my first thoughts crazy lady, I camped in November when I was about 19 many many years ago. These days I like my comforts😅 I would like to wish you a very happy Christmas to you and your family, take care . Hope you don't have to work all over Christmas. A very happy New year to you.😊
Thank you, and Happy Christmas to you and all yours.
Well squared away there, it’s great now how compact the modern camping gear is, especially sleeping bags & mats, if anyone ever criticises you for the amount of kit you have, just state “anyone can be uncomfortable”.
Definitely going to get one of those pumps.
Instead of tins I now use boil in the bag meals that used to scrounge off my old army mates, but now that source has ran out, I’ve bought a vacuum bag sealer for my kitchen, so before I go out I can make up my own meals & pop them into the bags.
Hi, thank you and glad you enjoyed the episode. 😊
Well done for braving the cold, I can't believe that cafe couldn't just make you a hot drink, I mean there was still people in there finishing off, next time I go to the gorge I'll make sure I don't spend my money in there, miserable #!!!!!!!
Typical British attitude. Plenty of antibike still around.
Big respect Girl! Some really useful kit tips too. I'm going to get one of those inflators. Thank you for the effort you made.
Glad it was helpful! 😊
Very keen camping in those temperatures, well done! I'm not sure if you realised you were just around the corner from Helmet City who would've made you a free cuppa unlike that miserable lady in the cafe (considering people were still sitting there). In addition Cheddar Ales Taproom is next door to Helmet City and worth a visit. And yes Cheddar is chocker during the summer months and a popular biker haunt.
Next time I'll go there! 😊
Another great video - you should have called it 'The Boob And The Hedgehog' your viewership would have trebled. :)
😂
Well done. I had a wry smile to myself when you mentioned being inside a cramped tent. You should try a Wingman of the Road Goose tent. Honestly it would make for an interesting video from your perspective. It's big , bulky heavy and cramped inside but I love mine.
I tried one , for 30 seconds. It was like being in a coffin! 🫣
You are wearing black and grey... pretty much invisible in fog, rain and dark winter roads.
You might invest in some high-vis gear to wear in winter.
Orange or yellow helmet, orange vest or jacket with reflective stripes... etc.
I do have an orange Dyno rod coloured rain coat, just didn't pack it this trip!
Actually, I think that you'll find that the oldest human being found on Earth is Keith Richards.
😂
🥶nooo waaay garage oct - may back biker
Hi Charlie, I should take delivery of my new Himalayan 450 on 1 March 2024 can’t wait ❤
Good choice! 😊
Hi Charlie. Just wondering why your other bike does not get an outing. Regards Mark Isle of Man.
Betty the Bobber? Oh she is 100% a fair weather bike only 😂
I dont have the nuts to motorcycle in December especially country roads.
Could you give some tips?
Ps i thumbed up.
A tip would be, don't do it unless you're slightly bonkers and think it's a good idea! Most sensible people would wait til at least it's above freezing.
If you DO venture out, stick to gritted main roads, dress layered and appropriately, stop often, take extra care, do everything even smoother than normal, and be prepared to accept sometimes it's a bad idea and bail or turn around. 😊
Hey Charlie
Great video - thanks for sharing the adventure. It looked like you were using heated gloves (no wiring loom - self contained?). How did they perform on the trip?
Hi, these are indeed battery ones, Weise, I'll review them when I've fully tested but they are so far good.
Charlie you are one crazy lady, but loves ya lots ya lots like jelly tots haha.Sat here feeling brrrrrrr and im in front of my fire watching this adventure hahaha. Love all you do and look forward to your adventures. Was thinking better not mention Schnapps and schnitzels or god knows where you may end up haha Merry Christmas ...
Schnapps and Schnitzel??? Now there's an idea!
Bahaha even I wouldn’t refuse a cuppa tea if someone already walked in 😂 Absolutely love your vids ❤ such an inspiration to just get out there 😊
Thank you! 😊
What a nice little adventure, hopefully you have thawed out by now. Cheddar Gorge looked lovely, but alas as you suspect a nightmare in the summer .
It was lovely. 😊
Nice. My little girl said you made an ice wine glass and little bowl.
Cool. And something she wants to try.
I was wondering (i have no idea) would you be more snuggly if you put your whole sleep system inside the bivvy bag? If there is room.
I tend to fall off my pad in the night and I'm thinking of putting the pad reflective and sleeping bag inside a bivvy bag to prevent this.
I may have to see if it all fits in the bag. Sorry your little one was subjected to my anatomical references! 🫣
Not my kind of fun but well done you 👍
HI, great video -- I would love to know the difference between big and little tent in the cold as I think the same as you small tent and smaller space to heat. I spotted somebody advising about making sure your tent still vents to cut down on condensation and in the morning ice, so be careful on how you use your porch area.
I think you need an electrical bag and that needs to go in the sleeping bag with you to protect the gear from the cold.
Check your footage on the ride home as the quad lock looked as though your phone was vibrating well.
A prep for the Dragon, I have been collecting similar gear over the year and have a stretcher cot thrown into the mix to keep me off the ground- thanks for "testing the other gear combo's out for me" I have also collected a small portable/ collapsible wood fired stove to cook and heat with, rather than working with a large pit/ or just a spirit burner.
How was the Cheese?
See you at the Dragon
Dragon will be 😊 I have learnt that the foil blanket should be the other way up!
Wow you are one tough lady. Rather you than me. Loved your videos this year and I look forward to more next year. Loved the French trip especially. Have a good one.
Glad you enjoyed it. 😊
Wow fantastic video, ive been thinking of a camping trip too , in between Christmas and new year on my motorbike at the lower end of Scotland , You are an inspiration ♥ Thank you...
That's brilliant, you'll love it. 😊
See, I’m not a fussy cheese eater. I love cheese and I’m very content with the Sainsbury’s cheap cheddar cheese. Apparently, many cheeses are made in the same UK factory.
Not this one! Made specifically in Cheddar. 😊
Nice work with the balloons! Come to think of it, I think I remember seeing Madonna wearing those at a concert back in the 90s...
😂
truly stunning another part of the British isles ive never been to amazing twisty roads who have b@@@@ riding in -5 temps ,amazing content.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it. 😊
56 yr old man here who hates the cold and i had to put my central heating on watching your video, when i was younger i loved camping in artic conditions but just a big woos now and yet going the dragon on a monkey bike next month😮.
That's brilliant! Nothing wuss about the dragon on a monkey bike!
Well done for this it does show you its about having the right gear- not that I'm looking at following in your footsteps on this one.
You might also want try riding up/down Burrington Combe next time you're in this area
Thank you. 😊
I was at home on the warm ive camped in - -14 at biker rallys were 150/200 of us there years ago most week ends so theres cant now due to shit hours at work as a trucker and healthy soend more time it my truck it boring i still have a bike and tent but there redundant at your lucky to stiill ride a have drive my truck to pay my rent and i camped for 30 plus years im 64 now
Sounds idyllic somehow, I hope I'm still rising at 64. 😊
I've had a Kilos mat and it was warm, if I remember it has an R-value of 7 which beat most mats. It was noisy and me being a big chap it wasn't wide enough for me, great mat though and doesn't get the recognition from the gear tester channels. 😊
I've also found it fab, haven't noticed it being noisy tho?
I would have thought that you would have had a swim in the pond in the morning!
Maybe next time?
Oh lordy! Maybe not! 😂
Just watch your video I think you're ready for the elephant rally.😊
One day! 😊
Wensleydale and apricot
To have mist free visor smear dot of any soap on inside with dry tissue, polish dry. I used this winter riding for years. Better than any clip visor system, they always fail. Soap is ok as long as no water run down inside. 😁👍
I'll give it a try. 😊
Base layer tip Montane Primaloft base layers bloody expensive 10 year life span the winter layers the best no moths eating it even thou it wool mix ❤
Is it itchy at all?
Hi Charlie you made me feel freezing watching this video, but thanks for sharing it was interesting and good to know what you can do with the right gear. Not for me though I like the heat.
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
8:40 pretty looking area!
Some of my favorite pictures are of My Royal Enfield by my tent. I'm a weenie, my low temperature limit is 40F/5C. I've never seen the balloon trick so sent it to my granddaughters to try. I divorced my GoPro Hero and have enjoyed the Osmo Action 4, but don't know about cold weather performance.
Still rocking to Santa Baby and have had many replies that it made them smile too. That was quite a gift from you.
Thank you! 😊
What a woman - I think I’m in love. And I hope my lovely wife doesn’t get to read this…
🤣🫣🤣
Hey Charlie,q pinlock does away with Fogging
I have one in, it failed after the cold , I have since replaced it. 😊
Hey Charlie. You ok? You’ve not posted a vid for a while
I'm all good, currently editing the Dragon Rally I attended at the weekend so there will be something for you soon. 😊
One brave lady .. great viewing. Can I ask what gloves you were wearing ?
These are a new purchase, they are Weise heated gloves, I'll do a review on them shortly when I've tested them fully. 😊
When I were a lad on my MZ, we made do with Derri boots, Deep Heat and a string vest.
😂
Got to take my hat off to you. Camping in December ❄️
Little annoyed that women couldn't mate you a cuppa mind..
Come to Cornwall. We'll make you a nice cuppa tea x
Deal! 😊
I had to find your channel again just to give a thumbs up you must be made😂
It certainly helps! 🤣
You know you are a serious hard core biker when you camp out at -5 I know guys that would not even do that lol Rest Day Rider is a tough cookie! :)
Thank you 😊
Well done 👍🏼
Maybe it's better to keep the saddle cover inside at night
Quite possibly, or cover it at least! 😊
Been down there many times, though even on bikes parking is a nightmare in summer. Burrington Combe is another one of course. That said, you must be barking mad camping in December in the current UK weather. Hat's off to you! 😊
I'm glad I went out of season! 😊
Friends give me grief for using the drum from a dryer as a fire pit. Glad to see I'm not the only one.
It worked well and it's recycling! 😊
Yr braver than me madame 😮
The worst part is usually getting out of your sleeping bag in the morning.
It really was the hardest part!
Is Roger going to lay up for winter with it's wonderful rider I wonder.
Noooooo, just make the most of the nice days. 😊
You do this so I don't have to. And so, thank you and I allow me to raise a glass to you.
Thank you! 😊
I just love your indominatble and adventurous spirit
Thank you! 😊
Being an Aussie in south east Queensland Australia all i can say no no no absolutely not!!! I can't even comprehend that kinda cold 🥶
Hahahhaa it is summer there right?
Wow, you're a tough lady! I'm already getting cold by watching your vlog!!! This USB-pump seems handy, I might get one. Thanks Charlie!!
I'm very impressed with it. 😊
well done charley
"Cheese makes me happy." - I am waiting for the merch.
🤣
Visiting in the Summer, the whole of Cheddar is thriving. The shops, chip shop, even the cheese shops are packed and have a load of samples out! Really nice
Well it IS the single most popular cheese in the world . . .
There is that! 😋
Okay, don't know what to think of your adventure... Today I wouldn't even think of it... But if I was your age... probably. 🙄
There will come a day when I feel the same. 😊
@@restdayrider Yes, it's possible, but if you use the time well, you will have many fun adventures to look forward to!😁
Hats off to you !
If you need to go out and get cheese you might as well do it properly :)
Exactly! 😊
Great stuff, Charlie! I really enjoyed your video. The Gorge looked lovely and I felt cold watching you camp! Much prefer your solo trips. Can't wait for the Dragon. Take care and ride safe always.
Dragon will be fun! 😊
