I always love watching somebody else try to wrap their heads around this... at any time of day!

I’ve been a fan of these guys since 2001, they were based out of Oakland and have seen them live a total of 21 times. They were active from 1999-2011, broke up but reformed this year to release this album and just finished an ambitious US Tour. They have never played with Mr Bungle but probably because they were really just getting started when Bungle split up in 2000. That said, their amazing violinist (Carla Kihlstedt) was hired as a session musician and plays violin on “Ars Morendi” on MB’s California. And even though they didn’t tour w/ Mr Bungle they did tour with Secret Chiefs 3 which is about half of Mr Bungle in (I think) 2004!

From "Sleepytime Gorilla Museum", Matthias Bossi and Carla Kiehlstedt are also involved in the band "The Book Of Knots".
They released 3 albums: Book Of Knots (2004), Traineater (2007) and Garden Of Fainting Stars (2011).
There was a connection to musicians from Mr. Bungle. Trey Spruance was a guest on 2 albums (2007 & 2011)
and on their last one, Mike Patton sang on the song "Planemo" (2011 / Ipecac Recordings).

“How do you remember a song like this?” Perfect encapsulation of the songwriting. I think this is one of the more linear representations of SGM musically. I love these folks.
Also, that Godflesh shirt was aces.

Loved these folks for ages. Saw them at a small venue over a decade ago, small enough that my drunken self was in danger of disturbing their set dressing. 😄 They called it a day not long after that, so when they returned earlier this year, it was an unexpected gift. Got to see them in a similarly small venue on the return tour, this time with my son, and it was magical.

Oh boy, if you need a rundown - they recently reformed after about 12 years away. They haven’t missed a STEP. One of the must-see live bands. Brought two SGM versions to their first reunion show and it melted their brains and they had a blast.
They have a million other projects that run an insane gamut of genres, and it’s worth venturing down those roads, from Tin Hat (Trio) to Idiot Flesh to Skeleton Key to Faun Fables to Free Salamander Exhibit to oh man there are so many. They just GO.

approaching 40 shows over the last 25 years. for the 2024 tour i caught Denver, 2 nights at The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, CO, Houston, Austin, Dallas, Berkeley, and Amoeba in San Francisco.
the previous time before that I flew out to SF for the final concerts 13 years previous.
As for the Mr. Bungle comparisons I'm not going to ever get it... but that's because I knew of Nils and Dan before Bungle. Their band "Acid Rain" formed in 1985 and by 1987 were known as Idiot Flesh. And then SGM came out of Charming Hostess that included Nils, Dan and Shamrock (of Idiot Flesh) and Carla. Then there was Inkboat with Shinichi which had all these cats playing music/acting.
anyway, one of my fave videos on YT is of SC3 playing Amoeba SF and Nils dancing with his little girls Edda and Ura... who now perform with Faun Fables (the outlet of Dawn McCarthy and family)

Love them, saw all their LA shows except sadly their last reunion show. Check out "The Companions", and, " The Donkey Headed Adversary Opens the Discussion". Check out Free Salamander Exhibit as well.

I've heard a few SGM songs and they were all different which kinda makes them similar doesn't it? A few adjectives. Progressive, creative, hypnotic, and sometimes Scary. This one reminds me of King Crimson a bit.

These guys are like Bungle a bit but wouldnt place them right next to each other, different vibes. Maybe closer to Fantomas.
They are incredible live very unique stage show. Ironically, every time i have seen them the singer was wearing the very Godflesh shirt you wore at the start of the video.
I appreciate you checking them out if i were to suggest one of thier heavier tunes.. maybe "The Donkey Headed Adversary of Humanity Opens The Discussion"
While not my typical kind of music (more of a thrasher) i do appreciate the amount of artistic thought and planning involved.
Hope you enjoyed it brother. 👍

💵💰💲 The stacks are for the shirt-changing scene...make it RAIN! 🤘😸 As far as this video and the song....a polite pass...and I would like at least $10 back to buy me and Mike B a couple of rail drinks.
