Sleepytime Gorilla Museum are a theatrical music group from Oakland, CA featuring Nils Frykdahl, Dan Rathbun, Carla Kihlstedt, and others. They reformed with some personal changes under the name Free Salamander Exhibit. Both bands have albums released on Trey Spruance's Web of Mimicry.
dude the amount of work and investigation done here is ASTOUNDING! i'm gonna be seeing SGM at The Stanley in just a few days actually and I will be bringing my ticket stub from "Sleepytime Gorilla Museum's Final LA Show" which, from 2011 until now, was their 2nd-to-last live show ever. I cannot express my excitement enough. If you have any questions you want me to ask them let me know! I've seen them live a few times (as well as Free Salamander Exhibit when they came around these parts) and they've always been one of those groups that will stick around and talk to everybody after the show, so considering that they're playing two nights in a row at a HOTEL, well...I'll have plenty of time to bug them 😅
Sleepytime, still one of the most underrated bands that I had ever seen live. Nills was a cool dude. Got to see them in asheville, NC with Secret chiefs 3. That was an epic show/tour.
Been a fan of yours since Dr. Zoltan! Glad to see you keep making stuff like this. Thank you.
Thank you! Nils is STILL a cool dude. Check out his podcast The Nothing Show.
10:54 Cool, I think those are sometimes called "irrational time signatures"?
my favorite band ever pretty much!
Thanks Bannon! I'm glad they're getting back together.
@@CarlKingdom they are?
@@bannon315 Yes, they are doing a new album and tour.
I know this is a longshot, but would you consider doing an analysis of Idiot Flesh's Twitch? The breakdown in that song is particularly dizzying and I've always wondered what sense it made in this kind of analytical layout.
It's not that much of a long shot. Is there a particular segment you're interested in? I listened through the track and there is only one syncopation that throws me off. The rest is just shifting tuplets. If you give me the time stamp of the most important bars I can consider doing an episode about it. But it would be too much content to cover in a single video. The core concept though, is syncopated shifting tuplets.
@@CarlKingdom (Apologies for me using this AI enhanced version of Twitch, but I honestly think it's superior in quality than all other versions I've heard): ua-cam.com/video/zhITZ0fOx6I/v-deo.html 3:37 - 4:04 is the breakdown I'm referring to. I know that there's a consistent quarter beat underlying the entire thing, but I would love to see what's happening on top of it all in a notated way.
Also (and now these might actually be long shots), Idiot Flesh has two other songs with wild sections in them I've always been curious about. One of them is officially released, called Motherfucker from their album Fancy: ua-cam.com/video/box5uw-NWY0/v-deo.html 3:27 - 4:06 is the section. Conceptually, they are trying to make it sound like someone changing channels on a television. Analytically, I have no idea how they pieced that section together and nailed it live just like that practically every single time. I would love to see that fleshed out (no pun intended).
The second song is an unofficially released track of their's called Monkey: ua-cam.com/video/0ACowCIgunw/v-deo.html 2:44 - 3:03 is the section. Personally, this is my favorite IF track. A friend of mine told me it was in free time, but he never notated it out. It would be interesting to see if you could and confirm whether or not that's true. I think it has another consistent quarter beat underlying it all, just like in Twitch.
Let me know what you think and I look forward to a video on one or more of these if you decide to do so! Thank you for shining light on these incredible bands and musicians. The world would have been a much substantively emptier place without them!
Teen Devil Worshiper Jonathan Cantero’s List of Equipment for the 12th of October
Yay! Dale Turner!
Dale Turner sighting!
I BEEN DRINKIN SINCE I WAS A CHILD
Me too, but mainly water? There was a period of time where I drank a lot of Mountain Dew. Cold brew is a daily thing for me, now.
Fixed! ;)
Yeah that was bizarre! Thank you for alerting me to that. Took me a while to figure out how that was happening.
Apparently this tune is about an attempt to get someone into rehab using subterfuge lol
Obviously you can't just feel the music and have to analyze it like a non musician.
LITERALLY JUST PURCHASED TICKETS TO THE MARCH SHOW IN PORTLAND OR SHOW!!!
Pardon the brag I thought you would appreciate a proclamation of such nature….
I have no doubt you are up to date with their activities 🙄
However?? After long long awaiting they have returned ☝️❤️🙏🫣
