I am totally amazed at how calm and analytical you are in this video. Definitely a tragedy. I know stuff breaks, but seeing this scares the hell out me!
Thanks for the update. Glad you did not get hurt. Getting the parts welded, whether MIG or TIG will be tricky with the motor in. The parts must be extremely clean to get good penetration and strength. Looking forward for more of the repair on Donny
Things happen and it goes to show even the smallest part failure can cause damage to other components. You were pretty lucky and count your blessings. Those of us that work on our own stuff have to have the skills and know how to make good solid repairs when needed. I love that you do your own wrenching and show it on your channel.
My question is can the weld repair be done with the engine in the car or is it better to remove the engine so the parts can be cleaned properly and welded in???? MIG or TIG will be a factor also.
Just your luck!! Took it with stride and got a pretty informative video from the carnage 💪🏼 Nothing but good things to say about the QA1 CF driveshaft with 900whp and aggressive road course/track driving. Definitely gives some peace of mind having it as a fuse vs having it tear anything else apart.
The driveshaft looks like there’s no room to compress in that expansion part. So if the driveshaft couldn’t compress, if you hit a bump, suspension compress, weight from the force of the car going down could have damaged the u joint. Could have crushed the bearings and the centrifugal force fling the cap off, vibration, and then just how you described that violent vibration causing the carnage.
Hey Alex take a look at the aluminum motor mounts that are bolted to the block make sure those are ok. They probably are but might be a good idea to make sure
The bottom ear on the right cylinder 1-4 side is also for the transmission. I’m about to put a Carbo driveshaft in my swapped 69 for the same reason you just said. I’d much rather the driveshaft explode rather than come through the floor.
I'm sorry you had this bad luck Alex. This really sucks. Maybe take off the flex plate just to make sure there's no other damage - the welder will probably want it off too. Keeping my fingers crossed that the repair cost is as low as possible.
I believe all of the mounting points for the starter are on the bell housing. I mocked up my starter on my 6R80 a while ago to see how it mounted up. All of the mounting holes can be seen in the shim plate. I'd still weld all of those pieces back on anyway.
Mmr makes some braces that go from oil pan to the lower shield bolts on trans. Adds two more bellhousing bolts. I’ve welded ears back on with the braces and it work good
Thank you very much for all the content and information that you give in your videos. I always thought too myself that you never see anything adverse happen to these guys. Well, now I know that it's not just me that shit happens to. 😂
Odd failure, idk your setup but it would be a good idea while you’re under there to check your driveline angles with the suspension loaded to make sure you’re not maxing out the u-joints
Those bottom bolt holes that broke off are just for the transmission. The three starter bolts all go in to the trans bell housing. That broken ear below the starter won’t cause any issues with the starter. Starter centers on that steel spacer plate and bolts to the trans. Still sketchy, but you should be good to stick a new trans in it and roll on.
Tbh it looks like the engine and transmission werent lined up right which caused the drive shaft to fail. I usually grease the dowels and get the rust off so it slides in easily and support the front of the engine so it tilts up so the transmission can slide easily.

When this happened to my gen 3 motor, welders told me that there was a risk of the engine cracking more as it cools. Cast aluminum is difficult to weld apparently.
Said fuck it and ran it with the same cracked trans after I got the new clutch on and aside from it vibrating hard between 2750 rpm’s to 3250 rpm’s it drove fine.
Hey Alex, would those MmR block braces fix this issue potentially? I remember seeing those and thinking they were a high Hp application only type situation. Now you have me wondering.
I'm still confident that a competent welder can repair those snapped engine block ears like they did on my friends (nearly 1,000 rwhp) Aluminator swapped Gen2 6R80 lund-tuned Mustang. 💪🚗🇺🇸
I've seen (and been in the car for) some nasty driveshaft failures. But it was always the shaft breaking or shearing. Even had a cheap shortened shaft soda straw up. But I've never seen block damage like that. Almost seems like not failing completely made it worse. Still better than coming through the floor or pole vaulting the car though.

Imagine all the sh*t talk we missed out on because a shop didn't install that drive shaft... shame... lmao On a real note, that's probably the most painful cause of destruction I've seen, a damn end cap clip basically wiped out a drivetrain. Sorry to see it happen, wish you luck!
Just slap some gorilla glue on it! It done.. Fun fact i used to have a green Jeep Wrangler just like the one sitting next to section H8.. Now i have a velocity blue Bronco just like the one next to it 😂😂
That’s nuts. I almost want to blame the clip or an assembly error. If that clip wasn’t seated properly and few out the centrifugal force through that cap out.
My ford tech friend told me about a F150 owner that tossed a shotgun into his truck. It went off, it went through the bellhousing, torque converter and broke the block right above the starter. The truck had 15,000 miles on it
