Hello friends, here is the video in the live stream I talked about! We filmed this after Thanksgiving, but the heart of this message is take your leftovers and get creative. I show what I do with leftover turkey, but this can apply to roasted chicken, ham, and leftover roast are a few ideas. I took last nights leftover spinach feta tomato salad there was maybe a cup left put it in a sandwich bag and made several beautiful omelets with leftover salad I could of easily thrown in the garbage. Use it up folks. xoxo
Ohhh so delicious. I knew you'd make something amazing from them. I make leftover makeovers for most lunches and if there is lots ,I make pie or cottage pie or soups , and one of my favourite things to make is hash occasionally I make leftover chicken pudding from a wartime recipe book but I've never made pot pie casserole. Sounds so easy and delicious. I love your recipe file! My original one was out of my dads home office, its just boring gray plastic. Lol. Your kitchen looks so well appointed, and pretty as well. I see that island bench gets all the use . Were you scraping straight into one of those under bench bins too? Thank you for sharing beautiful 🥰😍🤩
@@countrymousesfarmhouse497 That sounds delicious 😋 I love making hash too! I was scraping into a garbage can below or my scrap bowl, I guess I should of filmed that too 😂❤️
Abby Jo that is what a recipe box should look like! Well loved! Such a treasure. What a fun video, I love creating new dishes from leftovers. I like to top my "pot pie" casseroles with a mix of sourdough discard, eggs, some shredded cheese, seasonings and baking powder.
I still use recipe cards. I like that if the internet was down or we lost power I’d still have access to my recipes. I also have handwritten recipes from my grandmother and love seeing her handwriting.
Thank you sweet lady. I am of the recipe box era. LOVE them. As I build my new box it’s going to be Forgotten Way Farm recipes. It’s just two of us now and we are teaching ourselves how to prepare smaller meals. ❤
Your daughter watching you tugged at my heart strings. I'd stand on a stool and watch the wizardry baking magic my mom conjured with pastry, pies, cakes and cookies, rolls and bread. She baked in her own kitchen for a local "dinette counter" for a golf country club and later for a lakeside summer cabin resort around the 1960-70 times. Those old recipe boxes are seasoned with far more memories than ingredients.❤
To say the least, our life styles couldn’t be more different. I am 82, widowed, live in senior housing. I have loved cooking all my life and still love new ideas, cookbooks, ingredients and exploring what’s out there. I love getting bits of good ideas from UA-cam channels like yours. About 3 years ago, I started a recipe file. I put in ideas, a note about a new recipe and where to find it. With a recipe book collection, the internet, UA-cam and the like, remembering where to look is difficult. I also include often used recipes and those rarely used but want to make again. I make baking powder biscuits (4 biscuits) maybe twice a year. That recipe is in my box.
I still use recipe cards. Like you when I was 16 y/o, I asked everyone in my family for recipes and wrote them down to have for my future husband, and family. I love them, and use them often.
I inherited a 3x5 inch red 3 ring binder that has my grandmas recipes, written in her handwriting. It makes me smile. I have saved and written other recipes on 3x5 index cards.
I always make a pot pie after a big turkey dinner too. I put the turkey and stuffing in the bottom of the pan. Pour gravy over, and layer leftover veggies on top. Then for the crust I use leftover mashed potatoes. So yummy!!🇨🇦
Yep! I still use a recipe box. Like you, I started collecting recipes in my early teens. I also have my Mom’s and mother-in-law’s recipe boxes that I cherish. All of my Mom’s recipes are written by my Dad for my mother could not read or write. I remember reading recipes to her at a very young age. She was a fabulous cook and did not use many recipes. Oh such fond memories! We were never allowed to let food go to waste. Thank you for taking me down memory lane today. Your family is so blessed to have you to show them the way. God bless.
Oh that is wonderful to hear, what a blessing to have both you mother and mother in law’s recipes. It really is a treasure ❤️ such good memories you have!
Abby Jo, you are such a breath of fresh air in the hectic world we live in! Thank you for reminding me that it's ok to take a moment to relax once in a while!
Hi Abby Jo- I recently stumbled across your channel on a recommended video that UA-cam gave me. I am enjoying watching them all. It is so interesting to me to see how other people live, and what others cook. I love food in general and am really enjoying seeing your recipes, and plan to try some soon. I love that you can discover other ppl on YT that lead completely different lives than ourselves, but still relate to each other. Thanks for the great content!
I have a handwritten recipe, from my husband's grandmother framed & hanging in the dining room♥️. Written recipes are a treasure! How beautiful that you've kept your's all these years!!
I like your idea of hanging older recipes in frames. We have a recipe from an aunt many times removed from 1800's. Family still uses it at holidays just use different pans now
I lobe the meals you created with your leftovers! I don't think it was gross to take the treasures that were left in the turkey roaster and use them. I always love creating meals with our leftovers. What a satisfying accomplishment, Abby Jo!
I love my recipe box and older cookbooks. I have several from WWll and that time period. I am such an adventurous eater, I don't think there’s any cuisine I haven't tried, but I also love the simplicity of cooking traditional old-fashioned meals. I just recently found your channel and I am thoroughly enjoying watching. Have a blessed day.
Awww 🥰 thank you! I’m an adventurous eater too, but old traditional is what I was raised on, I call it “ farm food” ❤️ welcome to our channel! New videos will be back soon in June.
I enjoyed this so much! I love to do these things with leftovers, too. It's pure old fashioned goodness! My Mom always baked the extra pie crust with cinnamon and sugar the way you did, and I still do it. It's so good! And I still use recipe cards. My recipe box is like yours - full of old family favorites and bits of paper, and I just love it! I wouldn't part with it. There's something so gratifying about pulling out a favorite old recipe on one of those cards. Thanks Abby Jo for another comforting video!
Keep your precious recipes box!! I still have mine and even though I now eat differently , I keep them for great memories! I love how you prepare delicious meals for your family!! I just recently discovered your channel and I am binge watching!!!
This video was such a comfort to me. Very much needed hygge tonight. Needed memories of being in my grandmother's kitchen watching her bake and feeling so safe. Blessings to you and your family.
Your recipe box is a treasure that you are right to cherish! I wish my grandma had written recipes. I was taught hands on by look and feel no actual measuring. Our family has so many lost recipes since she went to heaven. God bless you!
That’s so sweet that you have a recipe box and recipes from when you were young. I have written recipes that I’ve had for years from my mother and grandmother and they’re still my go to, when I’m looking for something to cook or bake. Thank you for sharing your ideas. Diane
This brought back so many memories! I used to make that pot pie casserole years ago, but I had forgotten all about it. I will have to make this soon. And the little pastries from the pie crust was something my mom used to make. I loved this video.
I love the name you chose Forgotten Way.I remember this way growing up many years ago on the farm in a big family.Life was much less hectic and the preparation of meals was exactly as you are doing.I have forgotten to do life that way.Thank you for your videos and helping me remember the relaxing caring way of doing life for myself and others with much less stress and many money saving tips.Love your videos!
No, don't get a new recipe box! The one you have is full of memories; give your daughter (s) one to start their own memories and recipes. My box looks just like the one you have. I've put some of the cards/clippings in plastic sleeves to further preserve them. Love your post.
I made this chicken pot pie casserole tonight, and since there is only 2 of us, I split the batch into two smaller pans and baked one tonight and froze the other for later. When I made the batter it was super thin so I added another cup of flour and it turned out SO GOOD. My friend ate it and loved it so much he went back for seconds. I do freezer cooking for my nieces and nephews who are living on their own now and this is going to be on the list for their next meals from me. Thank you so much, I can’t wait to try more of your ideas.
I don't have recipe cards but I do have an old notebook full of recipes written out by various friends and family over the years. This dates back from 1973 when we got married and I still use it to this day! Those dishes you made look delicious.
So many things I could say about this post. It is an art to cook that way, a lost one! I come from generations of women who fed army of family just the way you did it. I use a pressure canner to make my bone broth. I also am an antique dealer, buy out estates, conduct sales - I never let the recipe boxes sell, I buy them. Notebooks of decades of recipes. Real treasures! I get why you are keeping the box! I also write a blog where I share “a week of meals” from 1 pressure canner full of something. I always look forward to your videos. Blessings from Ringle, WI
It really is a lost art to cook this way, and it makes me so happy that this resonates with so many in great community 🥰 I think it’s wonderful that you are keeping those recipes from estate sales! Absolute treasures ❤️
The box is a treasure and it is full of treasures! I am watching your old videos and enjoying them. You voice is very calm and you explain exactly what you are doing.
Hello , yes I do have a recipe box and I’ve had it forever as well. I also have many cookbooks but my go to is the recipe box. I’m sure your place looks very cozy and I’m sure when it’s all finished I can’t wait to see it. Thank you for , sharing your life with us and your recipes.
Hello from the UP! I still use recipe cards. I have my own collection of recipe cards and my mother gifted me my grandmothers recipe box with her hand written recipes. I also have my grandmothers dining room table and her tin flour measuring cup. I cherish these things!!!
Thanks AbbyJo, Watching you is so relaxing and make things look so easy. I used to love to Cook Big meals, After MoM Passed away I just took over Cooking for the Big Holidays and didn’t no one’s have to tell me to do it, my mind did & I Enjoyed every Minute of it. Thanks AbbyJo 3-19-2023❤ I used to have a recipe box but like you have moved so many times & things got lost
Just found your channel and I love it! I have cards and a binder with special recipes! Love those hand written ones. They always bring back special memories and a smile. One if my best days was when my grandson came over and asked if i had any of those packages in my freezer to make his Ramon noodle taste better? He knew I always save leftovers to make a quick meal or snack. Keepp sharing!
I watched one of you videos and I loved it. The music you have is beautiful. I still have recipe cards. I love them and could never throw them away. Thank you for your videos!
My Mom and I used to bake Christmas cookies together every year before she died in 2009. I was baking Christmas cookies this year and I was going through her recipe box (that looks just like yours). I found a cookie recipe that I made with her as a young child and it was in her handwriting and smudged with old messes and memories from long ago. It was like visiting with her again as memories came rushing back. If I were you, I’d keep your recipe box just as it is 😉. Some day it will be a wonderful reminder of you for your children and grandchildren 🙏💕
I have mine and my moms recipe card files. I too have 5 grown kids, 11 grandkids, and 5 greatgrandkids. You have to be frugal and use up your leftovers and planned overs and scraps. Lovely video. Good job.
I have my favourite recipes written out… my collection extends back to my first year home-Econ. class in grade 8! To protect them, I now insert them into clear photo sleeves and keep them in a binder…. That way they are protected from spills and splatter and I can just flip through them. Your kitchen may not be done but it’s already looking beautiful. Thank you for sharing!
I LOVE your recipe box. I still love using my written recipes. I have quite a few that were written by my mother as well as a couple from my grandmother, my sister and my brother. I’m making a lovely journal from the written recipes from my mother and making copies of them for my children. Thank you for sharing with us.
I created a recipe scrapbook as a young girl..clippings from magazines, recipes from my mom and personal additions. I still have that today. I love your content and your artistic camera work...beautiful and peaceful ❤
I now use A4 journals instead of the cards but I’m thinking of going back to the cards. I think you have box of memories from loved ones I think it’s so lovely xxxx
I still use recipe cards and have recipes from my mother, Grandma and Aunt. I would keep that beautiful old recipe box if I were you. Sounds like it holds lots of precious memories. Your food looks so delicious. Better then pictures in magazines. You sure know how to use your resources. Just like my Mother used to do.
I can't express in words how happy I am to find your channel... Not only are your recipes so Yummy...Your explaining them makes it so easy to follow...Thank you for sharing !!! God Bless....
I have a recipe card file in a book from 40 years ago my sister in law made for me and room to add more. Your home and food are so cozy and warm. Blessings Helena Montana
I haven't used recipe cards in many years. I use one note for all my recipes and I love love love this app for recipe keeping. It's perfect and allows me to constantly add recipes with all kinds of categories and such. It's amazing....
I use a recipe box and a 3 ring notebook and slide my recipes in the plastic sleeves. Your food always looks so old world and yummy. Love you and your sweet family. ❤ Love being on your remodeling journey. Have a great 2022.
I hand wrote the recipes my grandma taught me in the kitchen, and our favorites. I recipe box I use is from my other grandma who didn’t cook often, but collected magazines and can labels with recipes I had to decide on to make room.
I am old school and still use recipe cards. The ones I treasure are the ones written by those who have passed. Especially my father. I always say my recipes are my heritage!
I still use cards, and I have all my newspaper clipping recipes from when I was 14. I’m so happy I found your channel as I like to live my life in a similar way.
Let me start out by saying how thrilled I am to have stumbled across your channel. I love it❣️It’s so homey and comforting and you have got a beautifully calm voice and all my cares seem to evaporate when I’m tuned in and spending time with you. Secondly I’d like to say that I live about 30 miles south of the Mackinac Bridge which puts me in Northern Lower Michigan. It’s so fun to know we live in the same great state. Lastly I’d like to say that I most definitely still use recipe cards. I’m a recipe lover. I was lucky enough to not only inherit my grandmother’s recipe boxes (plural), but my mother’s recipes boxes (yes, plural again) as well. I feel very blessed. I will be tuning in anytime I get the chance to not only catch current videos, but to watch older ones too. That’s the way I’ll get to know you better, along with your beautiful family. Thank you for sharing this type of content. Again, I love it ❤
Yes & no - my recipe box fell apart finally, but I still collect recipes (yours included) & have many from my mom, older sister and friends. The pot pie looked amazing and so I will be making one with leftover roast pork. I'll add sweet potato, russet potato, peas, onion, celery & mushrooms that need using up. What a wonderful idea Abby Jo. I feel "@ home" when I watch your videos. I make a cup of coffee and get comfortable because I know your videography & music choices will take me to a warm, cozy place. Thank you! Bless you & your family this New Year. ❤🕊
I’ve been bing watching you’re videos! There’s something so calming and I enjoy them very much! I saw you’re freezer meal video the other day snd you showing us how you have you’re drinks next to you! I found myself pouring myself a glass of cranberry juice today while cooking and thought of you!🤗
Oh my gosh!! I made your casserole topping…GAME CHANGER!!! It’s absolutely delicious and it was a hit with my husband and son! Thank you so much for sharing your recipe!!!!!!
I had that very same recipe box (ordered it from Current) and it looked exactly the same as yours! I kept it for 35 years, and finally replaced it with a wooden one a few years ago. No judgement here! I also have recipe cards I wrote as my mother told them to me the summer before I married, at 19.
I still have my recipe box I started in high school. It looks like yours with handwritten recipes, many on scraps of paper. My most precious recipes were handwritten by my Mom, Grandma, sister and a special family friend.
I love your recipe card box and no u don't need a new one. The one u have is full of loving memories..please don't get rid of it .I wish I still had mine. A new one can't replace the old one that's full of blessed memories..y,all are doing a wonderful job of making everything so awesome..have a blessed new year..
Looks wonderful! I love pot pie and will be trying your crust recipe. I still use recipe cards and still have many hand written recipes from my mom, grandma and great grandmother. True treasures.

Thank you! Your grandson knows you can make it better and that is precious 🥰
I watched one of you videos and I loved it. The music you have is beautiful. I still have recipe cards. I love them and could never throw them away. Thank you for your videos!
Thank you so much!
What a special memory. Thank you 🥰🥰🥰
I have mine and my moms recipe card files. I too have 5 grown kids, 11 grandkids, and 5 greatgrandkids. You have to be frugal and use up your leftovers and planned overs and scraps. Lovely video. Good job.
So true! Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video :)
I live in lower Michigan. I have my grandma's and mom's recipes and we use them all the time.
Hello, fellow Michigander 😊 That’s wonderful, keeping family treasures alive!
I love handwritten recipe cards!! I find the old family ones are heirlooms since those loved ones are passed.i keep mine in an antique sewing drawer.
They really are a precious treasure 🥰
I have my favourite recipes written out… my collection extends back to my first year home-Econ. class in grade 8! To protect them, I now insert them into clear photo sleeves and keep them in a binder…. That way they are protected from spills and splatter and I can just flip through them.
Your kitchen may not be done but it’s already looking beautiful. Thank you for sharing!
I love it, the binder idea is great! ❤️❤️❤️
Love your old recipe box. It’s real life and a treasure. Yes, I still use recipe cards and treasure any written by my Mom.❤️
Wonderful!
I LOVE your recipe box. I still love using my written recipes. I have quite a few that were written by my mother as well as a couple from my grandmother, my sister and my brother. I’m making a lovely journal from the written recipes from my mother and making copies of them for my children. Thank you for sharing with us.
Thank you 🥰 I love that idea!
I created a recipe scrapbook as a young girl..clippings from magazines, recipes from my mom and personal additions. I still have that today. I love your content and your artistic camera work...beautiful and peaceful ❤
That sounds lovely ☺️ and thank you I’m so glad you enjoy our content ❤️
I now use A4 journals instead of the cards but I’m thinking of going back to the cards. I think you have box of memories from loved ones I think it’s so lovely xxxx
I agree, it is like a box of memories :)
Abby Jo your daughter playing with some of the left-over dough while you made cinnamon treats with the rest brought back such sweet memories❤️
🥰 I’m so glad, she’s always near when there is left over dough!

I haven't used recipe cards in many years. I use one note for all my recipes and I love love love this app for recipe keeping. It's perfect and allows me to constantly add recipes with all kinds of categories and such. It's amazing....
Wow, that sounds neat :)

How wonderful!
I am old school and still use recipe cards. The ones I treasure are the ones written by those who have passed. Especially my father. I always say my recipes are my heritage!

Again, I love it ❤
I'm so very glad you found us :) And love that you still use recipe cards as well. Have a blessed weekend.

Yay, 🙌 you don’t know how happy that makes me ❤️ I love it when a recipe is a hit.
I had that very same recipe box (ordered it from Current) and it looked exactly the same as yours! I kept it for 35 years, and finally replaced it with a wooden one a few years ago. No judgement here! I also have recipe cards I wrote as my mother told them to me the summer before I married, at 19.
How wonderful to have had your recipes for so long :) I LOVE it. And the same box, too funny!
I still have my recipe box I started in high school. It looks like yours with handwritten recipes, many on scraps of paper. My most precious recipes were handwritten by my Mom, Grandma, sister and a special family friend.
That is awesome! What special memories you have in those recipes. :)
