Rumour has it that when an inkling loses a round of Splatoon, it is squished up and used as the battery glue in a Switch.

A little heat can loosen the glue enough to pry the battery off.

Probably should have removed the main board before trying to remove the battery that would have prevented you from damaging it. The main board can be removed while the battery is still installed.

But yes i agree the adhesive used on those batteries is EXTREMELY EXCESSIVE. EXTREMELY!! I’ve never taken one out myself but with seeing other people do it, its like WOW.

*Blunty:* I bricked my launch Switch!
*Nintendo:* Misery, misery, misery. That's what you've chosen.

2 years ago I changed the thermal paste on my Switch (1st Edition) I could have sworn that I had disconnected the battery, but something sparked and then came some smoke of a place in the board, very little really but at that moment my mental collapse was so big that i really can't say on where the smoke comes from, so i verify the battery and was still plugged in for my misfortune, unplug it, finish the job, close everything and turn on the Switch... It turned on, incredibly, I have no idea what that spark must have been, nothing good, but for now everything that refers to Wifi , BT, TV Mode, Speakers, I mean, EVERYTHING works perfectly, unbelievable. And now, today i'm going to take the risk on a 3rd party dock with a non original AC adaptor that says hit the 39W 15v/2.6a so... Wish me luck!

I wonder if its worth changing my launch switch battery now rather than later, with it approaching nearly 6 years old. Opinions?

Just did it yesturday with a launch switch. It was honestly super easy until I got to removing the battery, mainly cuz of the glue. I tried using spudgers for like an hour until I just resorted to pouring 99% iso down the sides of the battery. I tried to avoid the circuit board but I did get it soaked with some iso, but as long as you use 99% isopropyl (no water!) then you should be good.

8:04 - Oh, I see it before you even say it.
Hopefully there are some decent repair shops in Australia that can fix that right up. Would be a shame for an otherwise perfectly good Switch to become ewaste over a lousy connector.
Also, glued in batteries really need to stop being so ridiculous. A square of adhesive nearly the same size of the battery is too much. A couple strips would do, and there should always be pull tabs for easy removal. But noooo, companies want this as hard as possible so customers have to use expensive first party repair services.

This popped back into my head on my drive home from work, and I had a thought. Could be just as fiddly, if not more fiddly, to do this. But you could clip the connector end off the battery and just solder the battery's wires directly to the pads on the motherboard. Would need to solder again to change the battery in the future, but it would be un-bricked.
Again, not sure how viable that actually is. I always find it very difficult to determine scale, how big those pads actually are, via videos. I'm always watching videos on how to do a mod or other soldering project, then I go to do it myself and every time: "Holy crap, that's way smaller than it looked in the video!"

RIP 0-day Switch but I'll have to disagree here with it being equal part Nintendo's doing for a user being impatient and not using correct techniques causing the "bricking". By owning our mistakes, we learn/become better for it. Kudos for sharing the mistakes, maybe the community can learn too. Oh and pouch cells like to be restrained/compressed. Maybe the reason for the strong adhesive (improving battery performance/safety).

    • @mjc0961

And I in turn have to disagree with you letting Nintendo off the hook. I watch a lot of JerryRigEverything and Hugh Jeffereys, who do a lot of phone teardowns and repairs. I've seen lots of glued in batteries through them. Some companies include pull tabs, so you can easily release the adhesive to change the battery. Also, two strips on either side of the battery will suffice to hold it in place.
Nintendo did not provide pull tabs for easy removal, and used an extremely excessive amount of adhesive (a square almost as big as the battery itself? really?!). They are absolutely to blame for making the battery in their device so user hostile to change. Plus Nintendo only recently switched to gluing in batteries. Every prior Nintendo device, from the GBA SP to the 3DS and Wii U, had batteries held in place by a simple battery cover. Undo a couple screws, pop the cover off, there's the battery with no glue. Nintendo even used to sell replacement batteries on their online store, so you didn't have to take a risk on 3rd party batteries. But now? No cover, way too much glue, no easy way to remove said glue, and no official replacement battery for sale. It is quite clear that Nintendo has chosen to shift from user friendly repair to user hostile repair. And they cannot be let off the hook for that.

Having done exactly this to a 2011 Mac mini fan connection, I feel your pain.

Was there myself 2 years ago (almost to the day. Noticed this recently when I was playing the same game again that I was when mine died originally) when I killed the fan and had to send it out for repairs to Nintendo. Well they couldn’t fix my launch Switch but they were able to transfer everything to another launch Switch with the XAW serial number. So while pissed that I don’t have the one I originally purchased at least I have one that I can still hack in the future if I ever choose to.

Sorry to hear it, but great how you turned it into a tutorial. =') Maybe I wasn't listening all the way through, but did it swell because it was left charging way too much, or did it just get old/too used?

There's no way to know for sure what specifically triggered the battery to begin to fail. It can be many things, often a combination.
