    Love my Homesteader. Already shot around 700-800 rounds using the Glock mag well adapter with no issues. Knew I had to buy one when Henry announced it earlier this year to complement my old Marlin Camp 9. And this is coming from someone who owns 2 AR's. I love PCCs.

    Yeah, I like the idea of having both as a survival rifle so if you have to head out into the wilderness to get away from all the madness because society is breaking down, both are lightweight both can carry a lot ammunition. Both would be very reliable. Both will be very dependable. I would take both of them with me. I like to concept having both. As I said, I have the M1 carbine. The Homestead would just be a great addition. I think both complement each other.

    A really nice carbine. If offered in 45 ACP, count me in. Not too crazy about aluminum receivers, but I love the walnut.

    I really like the Henry homesteader. I have an M1 carving, and it really reminds me of that rifle. Lightweight. Great deal of ammunition and a great survival rifle. A person can disappear into the back hills and survive a long time just rifle ammunition with a whole lot of ammunition. Once again, Henry did a great job and as I said earlier, it really looks like a M1 carbine. And that’s what I love about it. It’s very versatile and very lightweight.

      @@fmgpubs you can take the M1 carbine, and the Henry Homestead into the backcountry and survive forever. I just lost two rifles. Ammunition light weight they both have great stopping power it’ll drop just about an animal you want for self-defense. i settled for the henry after years of looking for a 351. Mostly due to ammo availability. The henry is fine, but can't shake the feeling like I settled.

    • @miltonhall7078
      @miltonhall7078 Місяць тому

      If you feel that way, then go for it. The 1907s aren't really that hard to find. Ammo is another matter. Reloading is an absolute necessity unless you are rather well-off and requires a bit of a learning curve. But that's part of the charm. Bullet casting is also a real help. My 1907 (from approx 1918) will clover-leaf at 50 yards with AA5744 and a 175 grn hard cast bullet. You can do the same. If the price of the loading set up is a bit off-putting, keep in mind you'll only do it once.

    You're spot on with your 1907 Win comparison. Being a longtime fan of the Win 1907, I remember the first Homesteader I ever saw. It looked just too much like a 1907 to be a coincidence. Its a 1907 inside as well, though Henry made some really nice internal upgrades that make disassembly easy and simple. Anyone who's ever attempted disassembly of a 1907...especially the main spring...will know EXACTLY what I mean. I remember dropping Henry a note congratulating them on reintroducing an upgraded 1907. Don't think they appreciated it...
    I agree wholeheartedly with those who are calling for a 45ACP or a 10mm, but they need to understand that with this type of action, a larger caliber will require significantly more mass in the under-forearm counterweight. I'm definitely NOT a fan of the 9mm but it does have one very big advantage: Ammo and brass for this round are readily available, at bargain basement prices, all over the world. The same can't be said of the 45 and especially not of the 10mm.

    • @fmgpubs
      @fmgpubs  Місяць тому +1

      Agreed on the 1907. I’ve had mine apart and it’s not for the faint of heart. The forend weight on the 1907 is very heavy and I suspect for a 10mm in the Homesteader it’d be similar. Roy

    • @miltonhall7078
      @miltonhall7078 Місяць тому +2

      @@fmgpubs It would be. Likely the weight would be closer to that of the model 1910, which is even heavier. In his book, 'The Forgotten Winchesters', John Henwood opined that if Winchester had introduced the 1910/401 SLR first, it might still be around. They made the mistake of starting with wimpy calibers and by the time they got around to the good stuff, the damage had been done. I wonder if Henry might not be making the same mistake here. Historically, this is a great design, especially with the modern upgrades. All criticism aside, if Henry were to introduce this in 10mm, in spite of the expense of a complete new reloading set up, a bullet mold and brass; I think I'd be a buyer. Even the president of Winchester poo-pooed his own line of self-loaders back in the day, saying it "wasn't very good." I don't agree. The simplicity and ruggedness of the original design, along with Henry's modern improvements, make this pretty close to the best, if not the best, of the non-gas operated self-loading rifles.

    Hey Roy, is it +P rated? I would assume. I love this layout, and +P's with the right bullet would be plenty adequate for feral hogs and coyotes. Use heavy subs with a can for home defense & hot 124-147 gr for critters and you have an excellent double duty piece. I have no 9mm carbine because I didn't wan an AR platform. I agree with you; this looks much more like the rifles I grew up with. This may make the Christmas list. Great video.

    And in the court of public opinion the “AR crowd” seems to forget that your “self-defense shooting” is going to be judged by a jury at some point- either criminal or civil. Do you want to explain to a jury of your “peers” that you used your best tricked out modern military zombie-killer or something that looks like it is a hundred years old? It is hard to argue “self-defense” if you shoot someone at 200 yards with your 5.56 AR-15. It’s much easier to argue self-defense if you have to shoot someone across your yard with a 9mm carbine…

      Well, you could certainly plink and hunt small game with it, but I think it’s made more as a utility rifle for defense, protection, keeping in the truck and for new or inexperienced shooters. But with a very lightweight bullet it’d be fun on squirrels and such! Roy

      With a hard cast flat point from Buffalo Bore it’d work for pigs. If you’re under 150 yards, with the same load for Black Hills Honey Badger coyotes would fear you. And in a pinch, a well-hit deer would feed your family I’m betting! Roy

    Ok here's the problem/s with this gun. I own the Ruger PC carbine and feel that if I bought the Henry I'd be buying less gun for more money. Ruger has take down. The Henry does not. Ruger comes with mounted top optic rail. Henry does not. Ruger comes with the Glock adapter in the box. Henry makes you pay extra. Henry is so cheap one of the two mags in the box is 5 rds. Totally impractical. Wood is always good but the front paneling looks like it came from Walmart. Either Marlin needs to bring back it's camp 45 acp carbine or Henry needs to make one just like it. 10 mm would be fine too. Henry has a long way to go to make this thing worth their price.. The Ruger PC is a MUCH smarter buy.

    • @fmgpubs
      @fmgpubs  6 місяців тому

      Depends on what you want. I think the Henry appeals to the traditionalist. The five round mag is because some states don't allow anything more than a five round capacity in the field. I too think the Ruger is a great value, but it is a bit "tactical" for me. Roy

      @@fmgpubs Thanks for your response Roy. I like Henrys carbine idea. Just needs more refinement before I would be a buyer. I'm a bit confused by your 5 rd mg comments. Wasn't aware any states limited mags to 5 rds. And in those states why include the 10 rd? What does "in the field" refer too? Maybe I'm not up to date regarding that.

    • @fmgpubs
      @fmgpubs  6 місяців тому

      Indeed, some states limit centerfire magazine or rifle capacity when hunting. Some have six round limits so the five-round one would work. You can own higher caps in those states you just can't hunt with them. I think Henry will be moving forward with changes to this rifle down the road. And that 10mm would be a real thumper! Love the channel, good honest review, but I can’t stand this rifle. It looks hideous. First thing that came to my mind when I saw the rifle was that it reminded me of another ugly gun, the old Browning A-500 semi auto shotgun, with the big bump on its back. I compare the Henry rifle to the different model variants of the Ruger PC Carbine. I like the options of the Ruger much much better.

    • @fmgpubs
      @fmgpubs  Рік тому

      And that’s the beauty of today, there are so many options! I’m mostly just tired of the black plastic “add on” cartoonish look of so many of today’s rifles and handguns. It was refreshing to see an “honest” blued steel and walnut rifle, which I think is good looking. As far as that Browning A5 goes (the original designation of the original design) if you haven’t shot a Sweet 16 of the genre, that might change your mind! It’s one of my favorite shotguns and gets regular use here! Thanks for posting and for your kind words about the review! Roy

      Well, the 9mm is so popular it’s a natural for the first one. I suspect .45 might be next, then 10mm. Although it’d easily handle .357 SIG which would be interesting if loaded with a heavy duty bullet to withstand the higher velocities from the rifle barrel. Roy
