Our scores may have been high, but this week’s episode is definitely a bummer… join us for one of the most emotional reviews yet as we get into Smallville Season 2 Episode 8: RYAN.
We revisit memories of working alongside Ryan Kelley on set and the different emotional hurdles we had to overcome in creating this episode.
Tom talks about the unique juxtaposition of characters who usually have all the control, being helpless in this episode; while also discussing how he set boundaries while filming.
Michael remembers an improvisational outburst that sticks with him to this day, plus the idea of cast members being ‘in the dark’ when it came to the success of certain episodes and characters.

RYAN (S2E08) Ryan Kelley Emotions, Tom Setting Boundaries on Set, Improv Outbursts & Sad Endings #smallville #talkville #season2 - Розваги
One of the saddest episodes of Smallville, but also one of the episodes where you can really see Clark becoming Superman.
yep super important to the development
@@TalkVillePodcast Yes literally ‼️
The way they just cut to him being gone. Man, that really hit me hard, even just thinking about this episode makes me choke up a little.
Seriously, so good.
Ryan Kelley playing Ryan definitely stole the show in this episode. They way he was able to dig deep to get those feelings out is tough but he just nails it every scene.
omg its raghu, i havent seen you since i stopped watching the CW arrowverse shows where you would comment analysis on every single promo video
@@ThyInfamousAssassin it's been a while since I have seen you as well lol.
please make content, I've seen your comments everywhere for years
@@Brook11223 its like seeing an old friend, glad to see your still around
@@ThyInfamousAssassin å
A heartbreaking episode. Ryan is the first time we see Clark having all these abilities and still not being able to save someone. That ending with Angels or Devils by Dishwalla always bring tears to my eyes. Ryan was right in the fact that Clark did change a lot of peoples lives.
It was so good to have him back in this season, he got to steal our hearts again and leave an impact ❤️
good to see a familiar face for sure
"Ryan" was very sad. One of the hardest lessons for Clark: THERE ARE EVILS FROM WHICH HE CANNOT SAVE PEOPLE. 😔
Clark's dedication to reach the doctor reminds me of when Superman reversed Earth's rotation in order to turn back time.
Physics 101
Superman was going backwards in time, not the actual Earth. That would have torn the planet to pieces.
@@taylemgames2652While I agree with the premise of your statement for obvious reasons. In the movie it shows the rotation going backwards and then Superman resumes the correct rotation after going back a few rotations. It’s kind of a cool effect, but time travel would have been a better explanation, as you said.
It’s crazy the impact one character made that’s only in two episodes. I give credit to the Smallville writers for having the guts to have him die in the end. I feel like a lot of shows anymore pull their punches and as a result don’t get this emotional depth. Also, the emotions surrounding his death were so well played. Give yourself credit, Tom! You did great in this episode!
Also, always LOVE hearing what wasn’t scripted. The mayor saying “don’t laugh at me!” to Lex and the pauses Clark had in his conversation with Lana… awesome to hear how you as actors made these scenes that much better!
Love this week’s episode! Thanks again! ☺️
Yeah like in Star Trek TNG they killed Tasha Yar
Made you think for the rest of the seasons that anyone could be killed
Pete’s scooter line should not be overlooked. He should definitely be on the podcast.
eventually!
Love this episode❤ Smallville for Life!! ❤❤
Ryan Kelley is soooooo talented, he just makes acting so easy !!!!
Ryan & Reckoning, for me, two of the saddest episodes of entire series. I'm very happy with the guests❤ but it would be nice to bring Ryan Kelley on Talk Ville. Great episode 2,5 🌹
Absolutely! To this day, I still get teary-eyed at the end of both. It’s like no matter how many times I watch them I could never condition myself to toughen up and not cry.
Reckoning 🥺😮💨
Yup
@@natadunn Reckoning is really sad. Heartbreaking.
solid score
Ok so at the end during the scene with Ryan, Tom remembers Kristin was there with them; he remembers that little detail but he lost his memory during the epic kiss with her in the episode Red... You're killing me Tom !! 😂
He’s married so it doesn’t look right if he reminisces about kissing another woman even if they were just acting…but boy was that steamy kiss.
The music playing in the background after Ryan's passing captures the sadness so well for that specific scene. The musical beats in this show are always spot on not missing a beat.
Dishwalla - Angels or Devils
@@BC08 I bought that CD because of that episode! 👍
Smallville had some of the best closing scene music.
@@abbysands9510 Agreed! One of the things I really appreciated when watching the episodes on TV as originally broadcast is that during the end credits they would do a picture insert with text titles of the songs used in the episodes and play snippets of the songs (with maybe a voice over too if I'm remembering correctly) so I was easy to write down the names of bands/CDs I was interested in buying. When I first got the DVDs I was really disappointed that none of that was included, and it bothers me to this day.
@@abbysands9510 Yes indeed.
What a great episode...Clark learns that his powers can't help everyone. Really tugs our heartstrings.
Much like that one episode in Buffy. Its great seeing the touch of reality. Truly tragic
I enjoyed the fact that every character was working towards the same outcome, Ryan's well-being. Usually there are conflicting agendas from character to character but here we get to see a united front. I think that was one of the factors that made it such an emotional episode, especially when the combined efforts only achieved minimal success. Absolutely heartbreaking.
Such a sad episode. Ryan the actor was so amazing in portraying the character, so beautiful and emotional.
Clark realizing that he can't save everyone especially someone he cares about is so heart breaking.
I will give this episode: 🌹and a half
This was one of the most humble, down to Earth episodes of Smallville. Really emotional ending with Ryan and Clark on the Ballon.👍🏾
Dishwalla "Angeles or Devils" was a perfect song to help pull on the heart strings while Clark deals with the loss of Ryan.
I still cry whenever I hear that song
EXACTLY. Why on Earth they don't mention the song and its lyrics as Ryan talks about Clark's purpose.
Ryan: I don't want you to be angry or sad. You changed my life. You're going to change a lot of people's lives, Clark. Promise me, you'll never give up.
Dishwalla: I could see the pain in you, I could see the love in you. Fighting all the demons will take time.... are we ever gonna learn to fly.......I'm always gonna worry about the things that can make us cold.
That is exactly what Clark goes through. He can see loving people get put through crap and suffer while the Luthors of the world flourish. Prime example (that you will see develop over time): Chloe Sullivan. Fighting the Luthors and Zods of the world. Worrying about what makes hearts grow cold. Clark's heart begins to grow cold. The lose of Ryan, his first encounters with Jor El (Exodus and Covenant), Jonathan Kents death and Zod's arrival, Chloe's struggle to stand by Clark. Massive losses and you see it take a toll. That's what I liked about Smallville and The Terminator TV series (TSCC): They did absolutely fantastic to show the burden put on people that carry the weight of the world. No matter how strong, intelligent, athletic, powerful, or skilled; the impact of fighting evil and giving a crap about others is an absolute crushing burden.
Holy frick what an emotional rollercoaster. Poor Ryan. 😩😩😭 that kid did a great job acting.
One of the things I love most about this podcast, is how Tom is complimenting his young self in a 3rd person manner. It's very cool and very inspiring in a way
One of the saddest episodes next to Alecia’s storyline. Amazing episode and it really had me in tears when it was released. Grateful you three are reliving the Smallville episodes!
Both Alicia's storyline and Ryan's storyline were incredibly heartbreaking. Such good writing and acting!
@@petermichaelwakeling Yes I lost my girlfriend in Gulf War in 1990 she was a radio technician communication center umm blowned up 😭😔 And when Clark lost Alicia to Evil Sandkid and she died off I cried with Clark Kent too as well as at the gravesite . 😭💔💔💔💔 More pain to bear again and again for me .
@@richa.s9912 So sorry for your loss. I have my own trauma as well. I wish they kept Alicia around and explored that storyline a bit more.
Agree
Did everyone like that camera work with the Warrior Angel's glasses comic transition to Clark's face. Clark was OUR Warrior Angel! Beautifully done. Love you guys! 👊
When Talkville first started I was straight away looking forward to what Tom's memories were of working with the kid from Stray and later Ryan. I was so disappointed when he just basically said he didn't have any memories of him and I think Michael was the only one who did. I thought, how the heck can Tom have no memory of a young child co-starring with him as opposed to the usual crowd of 20 year olds pretending to be kids. You would think he would have stood out. So now we have got to the Ryan episode I am looking forward to seeing if Tom has had any new memories come to the surface! Lets hope so!
Same. Especially after last week..
A plot hole for me is why the authorities don't stop to ask why Garner/Summerholt were hiding Ryan from the police. That alone should null/void the custody agreement and confirm malice. LOL
But overall, it's a really great ep. Both times we see Ryan on the show, it gives really good insight into Clark. Also I love the continuity with Warrior Angel and the foreshadowing of how it applies to Clark and Lex.
BTW - The song "Angels or Devils" by Dishwala is used to PERFECTION in this.
At same point between Stray and Ryan, Dr. Garner somehow convienently gained guardianship of Ryan when Ryan's aunt went to him for help. Dr. Garner does say to Sheriff Ethan he is his legal guardian. I like to think that Garner manipulated and convinced Ryan's aunt that he could help Ryan, but actually couldn't since Ryan has a brain tumor. He wanted to use the time that Ryan had left to just poke and prod Ryan's brain purely for research. They say in the show Sommerholt is a research facility, a place where you wouldn't have patients, so that would make sense, right? He was being treated like a lab rat more than anything, at least that's how I've always seen it.
Great episode guys! Definitely a tear jerker. Also I get a kick when Michael makes Tom read "Leilani N" every week.😂
Such a heartwarming episode. Tom did a great job acting. And rosy played lex as usual .
Absolute heartbreaking episode always hits me in the feels.. Ryan Kelly was incredible but it's such a greatly acted episode all round
First time I watched the series I was in High School and this episode hit me like an emotional truck
This was such a great and emotional episode.
still hits
Tom saying " I keep talking about Nick Cage "🤣
"All those things I can do . . . all those powers . . . and I couldn't even save him." For very personal reasons, that line from the first Superman movie has always really resonated with me.
One of the saddest episodes of the series. Loved Ryan as a kid growing up with the show and still love him now. Two roses from me for this one 🌹 🌹
OMG I'd totally be down for a Live Talkville.
See, this is why I tune in. I like hearing about the craft of making movies / shows. Hearing Michael talking about how to get there with Clint Eastwood and hearing Tom talking about how to access the emotions gives me more insight on the work actors do. I dig hearing the specifics about how the crew does their work and how the cast does theirs. It's like film school on the cheap.
I will never not sob uncontrollably when watching this episode. This one of three episodes throughout the series I cannot watch if I know I need to wake up looking bright and refreshed the next day. 🌹🌹
It’s a good and heartbreaking episode, my heart was totally broken and I felt so lonely when the bed was empty at the end 😭💔
I love watching Clark and Ryan relationship. But it got me really sad that he could’ve been his little brother, he deserved it so much lol I’m not overcoming it for the next 20 years again.
The "All those powers and I couldn't save him" episode, the second appearance of Ryan. The first one had me too when he said goodbye to him while the song Superman it ain't easy was playing.
😢 AWARD WINNING TELEVISION 😢❤️
This episode ALWAYS makes me tear up No matter how many times I see it.
Re-watching these early episodes of Smallville reminds me of what I enjoyed so much about this show, the friendship between Clark and Lex, and I'm already dreading the point at which they become adversaries.
The hot air balloon scene of this episode is one of my favorites of the whole series. Sad but beautiful and hopeful for the future. And it's also Ryan's favorite scene! Great minds think alike!
How am I JUST finding out about this?? Consider yourselves followed, subscribed to, shared, liked, adopted AND added into my will and power of attorney.... 🤣😂🤣😂
This episode is haunting. It’s crazy, right? CK can save and will go on to save countless lives but it’s the one life he couldn’t save that stays with him. The last bit of CK looking into that room at the empty hospital bed holding that comic it’s… haunting and as such it’s tough for me to watch this episode. It’s good, one of the best, really tugs at the heartstrings.
This episode was omg broke me 😭 Probably one of the three most emotional episodes in entire Smallville 💔 Two and a half roses for it 🌹+🌹+0.5🌹
My favorite part of this episode was Clark’s super speed; up close and full of emotion. He is running to find he doctor that can help Ryan. I love his pleading with the doctor. Clark really does care about Ryan.
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Such a good movie.
Fantastic episode of the podcast. "Ryan" is such a great, and emotional episode that hits you right in the feels. Smallville was, and still is a fantastic show.
This episode was a banger of emotions. Seeing Clark in a rare position of vulnerability where his powers aren’t able to solve the problem at hand by force was a great thing. Man Ryan was such a great character in both “Stray” in season one, and Season Two “Ryan”. Lex was an ultra talented in this episode. I love how he came in and basically checkmates the doctor from Summerholt .
Such an heartbreaking episode💔 Even superpowers and medecine can’t overcome someillness !! And Ryan was abandoned by his aunt because of his perception’s powers, she is afraid of difference unlike the Kents !! Life is so unfair sometimes, this episode talks to us about that, and how i loved all the emotion in this TalkVille 💘💘 Michael 💙🙌 Tom ❤🙌 Ryan 💖🙌
Beautiful episode. Rosey: you absolutely nail this one. Tom: goddamn it you made me cry. Ryan: keep being awesome 😂💯
One of the best episodes for heart of the show and what a hero can be giving comfort to someone in their last days 🌹🌹🌹 Clark's face when he pleads to the dr that acting I don't think could be more real and at the end looking at that empty bed was so tearful the actor playing Ryan was so amazing
As I have commented before in 2005 my brother who is now no longer with us developed schizophrenia and him and the 5 voices in his head all yelling at him was very similar to Ryans distress in that its so loud really got to me
Also probably best super speed
I love how Tom will say he doesn't remember anything about the episode and then it leads into an intense discussion about directing and acting that includes stories about Clint Eastwood and Nicholas Cage. This is why i watch.
It's such an emotional episode! It was our first time experiencing losing a character that we loved...seeing the empty bed was a tear jerker! 😢 awesome podcast, guys! ❤️❤️
I'm currently rewatching the whole series for the 10th time, on season 8 now.
😅👍 I started re-watching Smallville a while after Talk Ville kicked off and was trying to watch just one episode per week but after a month or so I just started binging and finished all 10 seasons last month. 🙌 Probably only my 6th or 7th time watching the whole thing.
I really loved this episode :) Clark was learning to be Superman . I will always love Smallville
Fuuuudge...."you were the best mom" got me tearing at work 😢
I loved the episode, Ryan. It was so sad that he died. I love the fact that Clark did everything he included to try and save him, but ultimately even with his powers, he couldn't save him.
Ps
I also love that Michael acknowledges the non-patrons for watching. I always felt he didn't acknowledge us because we weren't patrons. Don't get me wrong, patrons are good, but if no one is watching or commenting on your video, what good are the patrons? Since the video reaches no-one.
We might not all be patrons, but we love and support the show. When we watch it, we watch the ads to help the content creator, share the video and even comment on the video. By doing this, it tells the UA-cam algorithm that the channel is popular, so UA-cam recommends it to more people and also sponsors see that your channel is popular. That is why UA-camrs always say please comment, like, and subscribe because it helps them reach more people.
Ryan was my favorite guest star Smallville
Very good episode :D
I actually remember this Episode so well because we went on a school trip to Atlanta. Our Teacher was a huge Smallville Fan and allowed us to watch it in the evening with almost the entire class.
Really it's the first ep where Clark has a real loss. So far he's been able to meet and beat the challenges. I think it's important for his character development and the choices he makes by the end of season.
Side note: this ep was beautifully emotional, held it together til that first shot of the hot air balloon then tears swelled up!
Not getting Ryan Kelley onto the podcast once again is insane, with how available the actor is and how beloved the character is.
They tried. That's all they can do is try
@@PlumbPitiful Well Ryan did died off Soo . 😭😔
This episode broke my heart because of what happened to the Ryan character. I have a little brother but, we don't speak anymore & the kid that played Ryan did a fantastic job, & how he made me empathize with the character, as well as how he played a little brother to Clark. This episode hits me every time i see it.
This was about a two-and-a-half roses episode it's one of my favorite episodes of Smallville you're doing a great job keep up the good work
Ryan was the hellhound, in the MTV version of Teenwolf…. He was wonderful in it!
It's definitely one of the better episodes this season! Very emotional for Clark. Enjoyed the stream, Thanks 💯!
I started watching “Inside of You” when you did the interview with Jonathan Franks. I watched some others [Wil Wheaton., and Nathan Fillion], and notice you have a Smallville podcast. I have been watching everything back to back to catch up. I just lost my father unexpectedly in October of last year. I originally watched Smallville with my father. Rewatching and watching your takeaways and inside information has been nice. My father always liked to know how things were done, and watching this make me feel like my father is here again. I know you most likely won’t comment on this, but hopefully you do read it. I wanted to say your interviews are very good. You talk to people not down to them, which make them easy to watch. I always loved how you played the Lex Character, even when he went more evil, he was still a character I wanted to watch. Thank you, Tom Welling, and your families for all you have done.
This episode. *sighs*. It was really emotional. Kudos to all who pulled this episode. Because once I heard if an actor's acting is making you emotional, that means they are good actors.
Long live talkville
Always hold on to smallville.
Such a tear jerker episode, Ryan did such an amazing job both times. Loved seeing Michelle bring out Lex's empathy, throughout the series even though we know Lex goes dark but how he teeters between the lines
Recently watched this one, you can tell the whole episode Tom was trying not to cry. Great episode to not remember tho. Unfortunately.
This episode wrecked me! Fantastic, heart-wrenching episode! So much emotion! Amazing acting all around and Ryan was definitely awesome!
This was one of the most memorable episodes of the show.
Whenever you see scenes with Clark and Lana it's growing pains where they always test each other by giving themselves life lessons.
They so want each other
But life is trying to stop them
I absolutely adore this podcast! I drive through to the office once a week on Wednesdays and this pod keeps me entertained while stuck in traffic. I grew up watching Smallville, so reliving these episodes with the two of you is next level awesome! Thanks for loving your fans after all these years!
This episode should have won all sorts of awards.
I hurt my hand😞😢
Tom's acting in this was incredible.
He is Superman.
One of my favorites from the early seasons and the kid is such a good actor.
This was one of my favorite episodes, I remember crying at the end 🥲 Ryan Kelly had amazing chemistry with everyone on set. Loved how they played with the super speed and how Lex tried to help Ryan, lots of foreshadowing. I also loved how Clark finally took charge and asked Lana to stay in Smallville. Thanks guys! ❤️
Micheal. Tom is so right about being able to absorb the episodes weekly and being ready for whatever we were going to be shown next. It was hit and miss every week. But we would reset each week hoping the next would be our favorite yet. Alot of times they didn't disappoint as a superman fan of course.
A fun fact with this episode and future episodes now after. The shot they use of Clark running to get to the doctor in Hub City they will continue to reuse that shot for most if not the rest of the seasons. They have Tom dress in the same outfit before they cut to the scene but you can tell cause if you look you can see Clark has the paper/pamplet for the doctor on him in those future shots.
That was William B. Davis aka Cigarette Smoking Man from The X-Files playing the mayor. And what an event it was to see him and Lex/Michael in a couple of scenes together. The two greatest villains in TV history. I always suspected that he improvised the "don't laugh at me!" because he did something similar on The X-Files a couple of times. And always incredible to see actors like William and Michael going at it. It's like a game of chess mixed with table tennis.
I’m commenting this before finishing the podcast but honestly I give it 🌹🌹🌹. I think even though it’s a slower episode. I love how it’s not a classic freak of the weak. I guess Ryan is in a way but it’s way more character oriented and it’s so emotionally gripping that it just felt different than the others.
Clark played the big brother role perfectly to Ryan. One of my favourite episodes ever. ❤
I'm not ready for this episode 😭
Wow, the process you have to go through as actors. Thank you for sharing, it's amazing.
Can we also just appreciate the soundtrack of these episodes?! Cuz man!
The scene with Ryan and Lex in the hospital was my favorite scene ever in the show!
Y'all changed my life when I was a teen, I went home from the skatepark early to watch smallville. I loved the cast and was hoping Tom would play superman on the big screen...I can still hope ❤️. Thx to Y'all
Thanks for S02E08! 🍻🍻🥂🥂
One of the best episode of the entire show. 👌👌
40:41 I love how passionate Michael is about the quality of these smaller 8 or 10 episode tv seasons lol
Ryan is three roses for sure.
This is such a great, emotional episode and really the first sad episode of the show. The ending makes me cry so much.
I love Tom's and Michael's Christopher Walken impressions. They should just do a whole episode speaking like Christopher Walken. lol.
Love Tom sharing about the creative acting process! My daughter is a teenager and is in plays and wants to do film acting. Y'all's behind the scenes helps me understand her interests more...
She wanna be an actress? Well I really hope she's an indie movie, cheap TV series level cuz if she's big? Let's just say y'all don't want that, trust me! Love and light 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Man this episode made my eyes leek as a child first watching back in the day and still now as a adult ❤️💙🙏 This episode had a Powerful Proformace that is unbelievable By Tom Ryan Michael and All, This episode always got me because I lost a family member from cancer very close to home🕯️ Just Thank You no joke You guys are Hero's 🌹🌹🙏 Always enjoy your Story's on making these, Stay Amazing 👏
This is one of Smallville's best episodes. As someone who watches the full series at least 3 times a year, this episode has always stood out as a perfect portrayal of Clark Kent. That scene on the hot air balloon at the end PERFECTLY displays why Clark is so special, and unlike any superhero out there. It's his humanity, his compassion, his intense need to better everything around him. Unlike most superhero characters, Clark does more than just simply beat up the bad guys, he tries to help them. This episode will never not move me. Total and absolute understanding of the character of Clark Kent. That even he can't save everyone, but that doesn't mean he wont go to the ends of the earth if it means there is a chance. A beautiful episode.
Season 3 of The Mandalorian dropped yesterday. Near the end of the episode I said to myself, “Wow this is a great episode! I’d give it 2.5 maybe 3 roses.” Haha thanks a lot fellas, I now rate all TV with the Rose N Bomb rating and I’m fine with it.
Muy fuerte este episdio, Ryan fue un gran personaje y marco la vida de Clark!
Did anyone else notice one of the people who submitted a Q&A video, his license plate read "Superman" but it was flipped due to his front facing cam.
That and I'm also a huge X-Files fan. It was really good to see William B. Davis in this episode. That show was also filmed in B.C. Canada! Krista Allen guest starred on that show as a sexy virtual villain.
One of my favorites of the entire series.. love that Clark Ryan dynamic… thanks for another great Wednesday
"The ultimate Smallville rewatch podcast from the 2 guys that lived it and barely remember it" lol
Finally caught up to real time with the podcast. So happy you guys are doing this! Thank you!
I'm 3 months behind 😞 but quickly catching up!
I hope you put the live podcast on UA-cam as long as y’all do that, that would be awesome 😂
I'm really surprised at how I keep getting some life tip gems on this podcast from a couple of my favorite actors.... thanks guys.
