We are obsessed with the past because we know there's no future. I think everyone who claims they hear a difference or that "the original is better" wouldn't be able to tell a blindfolded test. It's the same thing as the Prophet 6 vs Prophet 5 argument. All those blind tests nearly everyone got them wrong and those that claimed they didn't are lying. Then the argument was "Well the Prophet 5 just has that special something." Yes, it's called nostalgia. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Making a decision based on emotion or feeling an emotional connection with an instrument is perfectly valid but at least be honest about it.
I allow me to answer you in an exchange as a good friend. We can indeed say blindfolded there will be no difference but I can tell you that the Sp Og that I also own, in comparison has quite a bit more low frequency at sampling. Is this due to the deterioration of the components over time? I do not know. We are surely talking about the same de la Isla s2400 in a few years...I'm convinced of it because it also destroys everything in its path 💥 despite some software bug reports light from some owners.
Over an iPhone speaker isn’t gonna prove anything. I’d love to hear one recorded properly and to do comparable workflow videos showing from sampling to finished beat mirrored on the machines. That’d be cool to see!
@@luch1112 thanks For doing this comparison I have the S 2400 myself and I like it But can you do a simple kick and snare track with sample in both units and compare them side by side?
The SP1200 is worth getting too as an Investment or collector piece. Dave Rossum is a pioneer and I got this to keep in honor of all the legends in hip hop who rocked them 2.5 seconds of sampling into timeless creations. ISLA honored Rossum by making the S2400 and wanted to create a modern successor because in 2019 Rossum had zero plans to ever make another SP1200. He could have made a modern successor himself but for some reason took his company in another direction until ISLA asked his permission to create their unit. He made them change the name from SP2400 so rhey used the S2400 name for Sampling using two DACs a 24bit which breaks down to 16bit/48khz and a 16bit which discard the least important 4 bits down to 12.
That's what I been saying bro! I got both (og sp1200 and s2400) of them and it is the same or nearly identical. Sp1200 fanatics act like it's blasphemy to say that s2400 or any other shit sounds same or nearly close enough. Sp1200 group.. Just sensitive. That's why I ain't paying due the new Rossum Sp, he should have came out with that decades ago before all the copycats came out and had enough time to hone in the dsp or the sound to be nearly identical if not the same. Great video 👏👏👏
its easy to make a beat on the isla s2400 as it loads a little faster. I prefer the s2400 for samples because theres more time and when your recording a pattern you add samples without it sometimes cutting out other sounds on you like on the og SP 1200. As for drums the sp 1200 all day it sounds a lot better on the low end and more grimey than the more polished s2400. if i had to choose one id prolly pick the isla cause of it features livelooping timestreching lpf hpf bit rate optional 16-1. But the sound is better on the og sp 1200 or the rossum sp 1200 hands down. Solid video! Get both if you have the money they wont be around forever very limited
Man, alot of misinformation on the S2400. I grew up on the 1200's sound, and always wanted to have it as part of the studio. But it's always been crazy expensive, even more so here in Europe. I've seen alot of negative talk on the s2400, but to hear somebody who actually owns both be very clear about it is really good to hear. If it has 'that sound' down, that's all i needed to know, thanks for this.
Much needed side by side! Thank you for this. How about swing/quantize? If you could do a full track using same samples on both machine that would be incredible. Just to hear how the drums and sample blend on both machine. Thank you for being the first to do this comparison. 🙌
@@synthpunkmusick1661 Does that mean he prefers the new SP? I’m really trying to get my head around the differences. In some videos I am definitely hearing near enough the same or a very close sound between the OG and the s2400. They both bump hard and the S2400 rings nicely in the same kind of way. Would have been nice to hear a side by side from the same user in the same room using the same samples etc etc
Great approach g! Too much hype on gear these days, anyways. The ultimate goal is to be fresh and original. Whatever gets the job done is great. Just my 2cents.
(Turn your phone into landscape mode). But thanks for doing the video. Even though you recorded over an iPhone, and people are complaining that it doesn't prove anything, I disagree - even over the iPhone speaker you can hear the same exact aliasing artifacts. They are identical. We knew they were. People are just trying and trying to find something that doesn't exist.
That's all I was trying to prove but some people are so mad I'm comparing the sound to the SP1200 they're acting like I slept with their Woman 😂 I was just showing people the sound is identical but beyond that these are different machines, both Dope in their own right.
I love the Isla and I hear differences in close tests but they are totally negligible in the mix, I really believe that 100%. 1:1 you can hear some differences between the low mid and high frequencies but it's ridiculous dissing either. I plan on the new sp1200 reissue because I want a rossum but the ISLA is bang on and such a delightful sampler.
this is a great video. imagine syncing the s2400 with the rossum sp 1200, now you have the og for drums and the s2400 for longer samples. the s2400 has a awesome sequencer.
close but sp has more grit and low end ..coming from someone who has the og,the emax 1 ,emax 2 ,mirage etc... it really dont matter what machine you use
What I really need to hear is an identical drum sequence ( kick snare hat at 54% swing ) in comparison on both machines side by side. I mean, I really want to buy an S2400, but the videos online are not convincing me that it's as tight as the SP1200 which is everything really ( and I really want to be proved wrong here )
Let me ask you this brother. Would you buy the ISLA first before the Rossum? Now i currently have the old Sp but the floppy drive is bad and ive gotten so use to my Maschine 8 seconds doesnt do it for me anymore . So if you were me which would you buy first the ISlA or Rossum. The Rossum is overpriced my opinion
How many of y’all think that dish soap body soap and clothing soap is different. If you say they are then you are wrong read the back for ingredients people they are all the same so yes you can shampoo your hair wash your clothes clean your car and shower with dish soap. The S2400 has the same filter chips as the new SP1200 the older SP has a different filter chip so it might sound a little different
Ive got both. Your wrong there is a difference. On this video low and hi frequencies not so much mid. One elephant in the room as well. Workflow on the SP1200 is a pleasure. The SP2400 is not. Its annoying. Your money your choice though.
Are you kidding me they are both simple simon units to use in every regard. 😂😂 the S2400 has more features so yeah it will be slightly steeper learning curve if you just came from a Fisher Price keyboard
A Rolex Submariner vs an Omega Seamaster. On has heritage and the the other has a more modern take. Both are very nice Watches. Edit: Also when listening to these comparisons, one should listen for mud and irritation. Not just the sample itself.
How about the drums ? That's the main point...would love to hear how à kick and à snare sound in these 2...that being said, I hear the difference...the sp sound for that sample is more aggressive or crisp, call that how you want...the s24 sound is quite close but different...
I will record into Logic to show an example on the next one they are the same it was my phone's mic in proximity to where I was standing near the monitors
@@luch1112 clear difference on the whole frequency spectrum. Rossum sounding definitely more alive, characterful . A bit like comparing one of the great entry Neumann mics with their classic models costing double
I think all the talk about the sound of the units it blown way out of proportion. I tend to think they're close enough. To me it's more about what the user wants as far as work-flow, etc.
Nicely done bro. I missed getting the OG as a youth. So the S2400 was a must for me (#264). As it offers enhanced features, as well as that sound we know and Luv. When it’s all said and done… Get what your comfy spending. I respect the lineage of the OG. But, If they came out in the same day, my decision wouldn’t have changed. 👍🏾✌🏾✊🏾

Some of my best tunes have recently been made on Serato Sample/Logic/SP bit crusher....Ive been forced to use all this whilst waiting for my SP1200 to arrive. We dont need any of this stuff anymore tbh....But its way more fun/creative to use these boxes to start something. I cant really comment on what is 'better' (ive only used the s2400) and who cares tbh..........I used to own an MPC60 and what i will say is - i never got that machine soul feeling off the s2400 that i had with the 60.....It did a good job at the aliasing (and certainly looks the part) but samples disappearing, white noise and crashes killed it for me People who want that definitive 100% knock/swing/simplicty/quality - buy the SP1200.......Those on more a budget and want a gazzilion more features and roughly the same aliased ring- get an S2400......I do find it funny how the S2400 lot have changed the narrative from 'yeah simplicity is key - restrictions breed creativity' are now 'well i have all these bells and whistles because its 2022 and its gonna make more better', like bore off.......You can get a similar sound off the Lo Hiss app for a few bucks......Its all about what user experience you want and are willing to pay for.
Any new company will have a few glitches or defects and even old companies. I just received my Rossum and it came with the 0 button on the keypad pushes back and pinched under the metal casing. ISLA has the best customer support and those problematic units were all addressed and repaired or replaced. Alai has never been this good and they are a big company. Rossum is also a small company and addressed my issue where I can fix it myself which I requested to do or they can fix it and ship it back. I love both units and proud to own both but you're right I can do all of this in Logic, Ableton, Reason using various LoFi plug ins like SP950 which is the easiest but its no damn fun. I hate being in the box the whole time. I even got an Akai Force which is an Amazing standalone unit that works like Ableton and cam save in ALS format opening up in Ableton when I want to finish with Vocals.
I probably would've grabbed a Rossum if it was more competitively priced, just for the sound, look & feel. But the S2400 was a no brainer, and since it arrived in December it has had two major updates dealing with issues and features. I couldn't live without the midi control now. Not sure if the Rossum has midi tracks, but that's a massive plus for me with the 2400. These arguments are futile anyway, even if they sound alike people are emotionally attached to their gear 🤣
The Rossum is exactly the same as the EMU SP1200 from 1987 except it has an SD drive that emulates Floppies, 2 Filters installed in the back that can be used on Outputs 1&2, Sample input monitoring, LED screen that changes colors and 20 seconds of sample time. It looks, feels and sounds the same. I'm glad to have both. Gear does create a feeling when making Music that Software doesn't have to me.
Good video. At this point it's like would you like a real Balenciaga cotton tee shirt for $700 or a nice Nike tee shirt with performance fabric and moisture wicking for $60?
It don't matter what anyone tells any of you your gonna automatically pick the one you grew up with. There was no difference at all ya'll mostly trolling at this point.
They sound similar but not the same. I hear the difference the Rossum has little more shine than the sp2400. But they both sound real good. They both smack.
Next can you do a shootout with different microphones. I own a sp1200 personally and want to see if different microphones pick up the higher frequencies that are effected by the aliasing
That would be pointless because we record into a DAW directly unlike a Guitar where you may Mic up an Amp cabinet for desired sound. I will record more Audio including sequences into Logic Pro to do a much better comparison using Zero plug-ins just direct audio input and bounced down to WAV so no one can say my iPhone made them sound the same 😂 or different. I will do this using the main outs only which have no filtering on them.
Yo thanks for doing this. And I agree. Cut the BS!!! When it come to alot of these machines people be hearing what they want to hear based on their bias opinions and prejudice. The Old SP. The New SP. The S2400. All have the SAME EXACT CHIPS with a different model number because of company copy rights.😑 You got kats going around saying that Emu Sp1200 sounds better than the Rossum Sp1200?!🤔 As if he didn't make both and remembered what he did?!🤔 Once again Stop The BS!!! And also stop making it seem like a floppy disk player makes a drastic difference in the sound because it doesn't. I can make a top knotch state of the art digital sound like a dusty neglected 78rpm record from 1930. Once again the Drum,Sampler or Daw dont make the Music. You do!!! And all the tweaks and tweaks in-between!!!! Focus on your creativity and learn your weapon of choice like the back of your hand. And Lets Go!!!😎 U.T.Pa Philly. Hip Hop since 1983!!!✌🏽
@@deebaker4671 Its one part of the puzzle for sure. But to simply think they use the same chip and therefore sound the same is complete rubbish. Open both up and see the difference.
@tanza I can open up both units and you will discover a mainboard with potentially different tact switches attached, pad set up, etc but they both have the SSI chip. The Rossum is really copying its old mainboard technology which is why the SD card drive runs on HFE format which is Floppy emulation while the S2400 uses high throughput SD allowing me to use 1TB cards loading a song with a 25 minute sample 10x faster than my SP loads a song with 2.5 seconds of sampling on 10 banks or 2 banks for that matter. Its still 1987 technology with a few modifications like input monitoring, filters on channel 1&2 and an increase of sample memory from 10 to 20 seconds, nothing groundbreaking here but the chip used to give it that SP sound is in both ISLA and Rossum's units and thats really all that counts. ISLA takes care of the rest of vintage SP modeling in the software which really just gives you the ability to use Classic 16 or 32 tunings which is all the SP has or I can select Semitones like my MPC uses. I don't need to speed up Records to 45bpm I can change the tuning and it does it for me. I can also load 16 or 24bit WAV files from my Computer via USB and Resample them internally to 12 bit, basically the S2400 is an SP1200 on Steroids with all the other things it does.
When I listened really closely to SAPs OG 1200 vs S2400 I could hear some differences but they were really negligible in a mix. The S2400 actually had slightly fuller mids, the OG was crisper in the highs, didn't notice much difference in the low end.
Rossum created the OG SP-12 and 1200 so due to its legendary history he can market it as a reissue of the beloved E-mu OG and it actually is the same with a few added features. Its a cult classic now so $4000 is a bargain in comparison to a used OG on eBay from $8000 on up. The S2400 does more with the same sound and that seems to bother so many Old Heads who used the SP since the 90's. I used one since 98' myself but I love new twists on vintage gear if the company doing it is creating it out of love and not a fast buck like Behringer seems to do often. ISLA nailed it
@@777wisdom7 Have you heard it in person? Because it doesn't sound muddy to me at any level. It's just the SP1200 had more clarity in the highs. The S2400 had more presence in the low mids. The S1200 had more in the very bottom which I think has to do with the DACs being 16 vs 12 bit. Ironically the S2400 sounds freaking great through the USB Audio. I know I sound suspect even saying that. I swear I'm not a fan of USB audio vs the TR/S but seriously it's crispier (I almost want to smack myself for saying it but in this case it's the truth). I and another beta tester had the same exact response. The other beta tester is SAP by the way and he had both against each other in a head to head.
the 1200 sounds like it has just a touch more of that classic downsampled sound at the lowest pitch imo...but also Rossum gets the win for me just because the guy behind Isla's attitude stinks (his name is Brad). A few years back I was trying to purchase the Kordbot, but it was on back-order. What he didn't tell people was that he was still making the units as he was getting the orders. When it was about 3 weeks past the date that it was supposed to ship, I simply emailed him for an update on my order, and he out of nowhere just sent me a refund and blocked my email. When I went on Isla's FB page to try to get answer as to why he couldn't just tell people what was up with their orders, he blocked me from that too, and had a bunch of people from the page (who I assume were his buddies) bully me & send death threats. So it's fuck Brad & Isla Instruments forever
That's really Sad to hear man and highly unprofessional. I have not had anything but good experiences with ISLA, I had a Native Instruments employee treat me like that when my Maschine Studio had developed lines in the screen after 2 months.

Btw dum dum both units use Chinese parts as do Akai, Roland, Yamaha and every other major manufacturer, this is just the reality we have to deal with in 2022 maybe one day they will all be made in the USA, both the SP1200 and S2400 are assembled in the USA by hardworking people at ISLA and Rossum. Go Learn something before you open your Cock Holster Troll!
Idk bro, unless the Rossum is way different than the OG SPs, there should be a difference in thump. My SP12 is noticeably different than my 2400. That pitch alias is one thing, but the drums don’t hit like an SP out the 2400
Are you referring to after you dumped it into your DAW for final Edit and Mixdown or do you mean straight out the unit?? They both knock pretty equally to me but you have to select L & R Mixed on the S2400 because the SP1200 is mono and the S2400 is stereo by default which seemed to negate that classic thump you're referring to until I made my S2400 mono as well.
@@donnie4455 Is he just talking about setting all the samplers to mono instead of stereo? or something else? Also did this make it sound closer? Just curious. @@donnie4455 Forsure. The SampleRate is different on the SP12 than the SP1200. They have a slightly different sound and the S2400 is modelled after the SP1200 so maybe thats the diff your heard. I was hoping someone would make a skin for the S2400 to make it look that way.
You are beating a dead horse. The ISLA is a cool piece and has way more functions, but the SP-1200 is the classic. I can pull up a VST and have the same aliasing, as a matter of fact you can get it out of Ableton by setting it to no interpolation in Sampler. The SP is much more, it's a mindset of 10s only, it's truncating like crazy, looping the end of samples, figuring out your global Decay and multi pitching and what sample to send to which output. That's the art of the SP, not the aliasing. The ISLA will be all over the place in couple of years and loose value. The SP will go up. So the question is, you want a modern machine that looses value, or a classic that will keep its value.
I get it but this was to make the Old Heads stop talking so much shit. You can't compare a DAW because this applies to standalone production. We really don't need any of this equipment, just a cracked copy of FL Studio and we Big Timers 🤣🤣
Wait, I thought we were making music not investing in bitcoin ? Who cares if your tool you use to make music goes up or down in value? If you make a song with either of these units it doesn’t become better or less whack because you chose to use either one of these.
Difference is clear as day. But for me it´s not the engine thats the fault with Isla. Its the rest. It doesn´t share the workflow nor sequencer. Maschine is a cheaper and better option if you just want emulation of engine.
S2400 is in the same league as all the classics. It's so close sonically it's not worth worrying about and I own a S950 and have owned a MPC3000. Do yourself a favour and get the 2400 while it's new and cheap. Don't believe the cork sniffers, they're gatekeeping because they paid top whack for their SP✌️

We are surely talking about the same de la Isla s2400 in a few years...I'm convinced of it because it also destroys everything in its path 💥 despite some software bug reports light from some owners.
The prophet 6 and the prophet 5? What? They sound totally different man, what are you talking about?
Over an iPhone speaker isn’t gonna prove anything. I’d love to hear one recorded properly and to do comparable workflow videos showing from sampling to finished beat mirrored on the machines. That’d be cool to see!
That's coming up next. I just unboxed the Rossum and made this quick comparison but they are "Undetectably Identical" in sound.

@@SPOD_ZONE oh! I didn't realize that
yo thanks for this video fam...i own the s2400 and i wanted the sp1200 but after this video i see im definitly straight with my 2400..😊
The SP1200 is worth getting too as an Investment or collector piece.
Lol !!
its easy to make a beat on the isla s2400 as it loads a little faster. Get both if you have the money they wont be around forever very limited
how is the feel of the 2400 sequencer compared to the 1200?
Im glad you gave clarity on that cause i was gonna get the high price Rossum but the Isla makes more sense plus its cheaper with more features.
thanks, great stuff
Man, alot of misinformation on the S2400. I grew up on the 1200's sound, and always wanted to have it as part of the studio. But it's always been crazy expensive, even more so here in Europe.
I've seen alot of negative talk on the s2400, but to hear somebody who actually owns both be very clear about it is really good to hear.
If it has 'that sound' down, that's all i needed to know, thanks for this.

I notice the Isla is more deeper on low end
this is a great video. imagine syncing the s2400 with the rossum sp 1200, now you have the og for drums and the s2400 for longer samples. the s2400 has a awesome sequencer.

I cant really comment on what is 'better' (ive only used the s2400) and who cares tbh..........I used to own an MPC60 and what i will say is - i never got that machine soul feeling off the s2400 that i had with the 60.....It did a good job at the aliasing (and certainly looks the part) but samples disappearing, white noise and crashes killed it for me
People who want that definitive 100% knock/swing/simplicty/quality - buy the SP1200.......Those on more a budget and want a gazzilion more features and roughly the same aliased ring- get an S2400......I do find it funny how the S2400 lot have changed the narrative from 'yeah simplicity is key - restrictions breed creativity' are now 'well i have all these bells and whistles because its 2022 and its gonna make more better', like bore off.......You can get a similar sound off the Lo Hiss app for a few bucks......Its all about what user experience you want and are willing to pay for.

@@197979jones It does mean something.
@@deebaker4671 Its one part of the puzzle for sure. But to simply think they use the same chip and therefore sound the same is complete rubbish. Open both up and see the difference.
Yea it is exactly the same
@tanza I can open up both units and you will discover a mainboard with potentially different tact switches attached, pad set up, etc but they both have the SSI chip.
The Rossum sounds just a little bit brighter than the Isla.

In this video the Rossum sounds more crisp, clean and clear to me. I own the S2400. I wouldnt pay $4000 for the SP-1200. No way.
ISLA nailed it
@@Iofflight I noticed the same differences SP has clearer high and mids
When dropping the sample low the 2400 was muddy
@@Iofflight Basically the 2400 has more bass meaning they do not sound exactly the same.
the 1200 sounds like it has just a touch more of that classic downsampled sound at the lowest pitch imo...but also Rossum gets the win for me just because the guy behind Isla's attitude stinks (his name is Brad).

Sp-1200 is clicky. Always hated clicky pads 😂. Good shit though

Sampled from a iPhone 📱 there’s no comparison. Pull out some vinyl and shoot another video .
Unfortunately I don't use Vinyl these days I use Tracklib and enjoy my saved space and covered samples I won't get taxed for when I release music or sell tracks in the industry
Rozsum ftw
I’d cop the isla but seeing they already doubled it’s price I’m good. Not that it’s not worth it it’s just the fact of the matter in a very short time it’s doubled - it’s a homage not og chill on that ticket incline
Original price was really to help for startup. And the people who paid that price waited for a year or longer. Current price is worth it. IMO
