It’s a Kiefer canning pear. I can them in slices for pies in sugar syrup. I also sugar cores and peelings and cook them down and strain it and have pear syrup. My husband ‘s mother made only pear preserves!!!
Oh my goodness, this looks exactly like the pear preserves my grandma Allan used to make in Alabama. I have searched far and wide to try to find a recipe that's even close to what she did and I believe I found it! Thank you brother for this blessed recipe! It's beautiful and I can't wait to try it. Unfortunately my grandma didn't leave any of her recipes at least not that I know of anyway. But thank you so much for sharing this, it takes me back to a memory that was very cherished, homemade pear preserves and homemade biscuits with butter. Now that's a treasure! 🙏❤️
Hi Brian, greetings from Canada, I have this pear tree in my yard too, and its called a European pear, and I'm told to wait and pick pears after the first frost to sweeten them, I usually peel and slice them and canned them up with a simple syrup, thank you for your video, lovely way to share your grandmother's recipe♥️
Thank you SO much! My mom and Mississippi always made these for us growing up there so delicious. I’m glad that I found your video because I am making him today for the first time. Thank you for taking the time to show how you do it.
I have one of these pear trees. They make the best preserves. Also, if you pick them and put them in a brown paper bag and store in a dark pantry for a day or two they’ll soften up enough to eat. ❤️
My grandmother is 89 years old and I’m going to pick these hard pears from her trees this weekend. I usually make brandy pears but will add some preserves to my to do list.
I like your Dirtrooster hat. He’s quite a guy. My office friend was dating a country loving guy for a while, and even though the relationship didn’t eventually solidify, the lifestyle change she met did, in that to complement his hunting gifts she became a diehard State Fair food entrant. She preserved the rock hard pears of her neighbor, who used to call her up when the fallen pears started interfering with his lawn care. She scouted out unknown persimmon and plum trees in her suburban quarter to be transformed in mason jars. She eventually inherited all the family recipes which had been lurking with her mother until someone showed interest. Anyway, your grandmother’s pear preserves reminded me, for which I thank you. Maybe there’s something intrinsic about pears that develop family values. It was a good video. Maybe try some grated ginger root and a little cinnamon in there. I have it on good authority that that kind of addition makes preserves stand out on the bench. Although the sheer fact of existing at all should make any preserve memorable anymore.
Hello from Hinesville....MMMM pear preserves on a nice hot biscuit!!!! Will be trying this next year, canning pears this year, first try. Thanks for the video.
We had a pear tree like this in our backyard. Mom had an oldtimey grinder that clamped to the table. She made “green pear and onion relish”. We hadda open all the windows and turn on the fans, the onions were so loud. I remember climbing that big ole tree and eating a few of those pears. Can’t remember what they tasted like: musta been hungry. I do remember that I thought they were so tough I thought my teeth might get pulled out. Got a whopper of a bellyache too
What an awesome memory!! Thank you for sharing that. My grandmothers old pear tree got struck by lightening I recall and she was heartbroken. But it came back to life!
Your video is like a movie! Love it. Thank you for sharing. I plan to do some pear preserves next week. I live in Canada and my pear tree over produced this year. They were green like yours but now getting bigger and ripe.
I just wanted to tell you that I have followed your video twice now. The first batch was so good! The second one I must have done something slightly different because they turned darker in color and were almost candied. My grandmother (89 years old) said they were perfect though. Thank you for sharing the step by step.
Value. They haven't looked at the cost in a store. The only one I ever found in the store is around $8 and it ain't no pint. You being in southeast Georgia the company is Braswells in Statesboro. They're pretty good but expensive
I have a Bartlett pear tree at home. The pears are very similar to those...after harvesting them they seem to need like a week in the fridge and when taken out of it they start ripening.
Someone is right & someone is wrong...either these are a kieffer or a bartlet...can't be both. I planted 2 pear trees in my backyard about 20 years ago...one was always loaded with fruit...soft and easy to eat right from the tree. I gave my lawn guy a bucket full, he immediately ate it and said that was the best pear he had ever eaten. I think it was a Kieffer pear but not 100%. The other tree never produced (Bartlett) only a few hard pears. Now, after Hurricane Michael (October 2018) the good producer died never came back, However, the other tree is now loaded with an incredible amount of pears...amazingly I'm inspired to can some pears. Instead of giving pears away...it will be preserves. Thanks for showing me how to do this. I never knew. P.S. I'm not sure the names as the i.d. tags faded years ago. Next time I'll label them on something more permanent.
A Fantastic Video! I enjoyed listening to you! Your Grandmother must of been amazing! I never knew mine, they had all passed at young ages! My Grandpa made the pear preserves and they were so delicious! I am going to make some in a couple days!
Love your video. This is how my grandmother made hers. If i wanted the syrup thicker do i just cook it longer?thank you for sharing this wonderful recipe.
Mine was Pappas pomegranate jelly! Was the only thing I ate on my tost! An his apricot fruit leather and he sun dried it. Later on I found his stash of apricot brandy...
I will definitely be following your directions for it this year. We have a Kiefer pear tree. I understand about reaching that amber color, but I couldn’t find if you shared the temperature when done. Another site mentioned the target temperature is 217° to 222°F. Is that correct for your recipe?
You just brought back so many memories for me!! My Mamaw made this every year. She had a giant pear tree in the field next to her house. I couldn’t wait every year for her to start making all the delicious things with those pears. Preserves and Pear Honey. It was all so delicious. I love a hard pear. I would eat so many that I would get sick. 😂 Thank you so much for this video. I was just a child again.
I have enough pears for maybe 6 half pint jars that my grandson and his friend peeled and cut for me They are not cut consistently Quiet alot of them are chipped in little peices I have had the sugar and pears sitting on the counter overnight My question is when I cook them are the small bits going to turn to mush or will the finished product still be preserves? Love the way you taught how to make this receipe
Sorry for the late response Susan. If you are not using a firm pear, or they have gotten a little soft they will turn to mush. I like to pick them when they are still nice and firm. It has to do with the variety also. Hope your preserves turned out amazing.
@@PrewittHomestead Thank you for replying I'm sorry to say that they didn't turn out I cooked them for 2 hours and the finished product was to hard to eat The best I can describe it is the juice turned out like the consistency of peanut brittle brittle, but harder They had started going soft and I think I should of cut the cooking time in half . The flavor was amazing though If I can ever afford to buy anymore I will try again
@@PrewittHomestead , after watching yours i watched a few others. Only one used some brown sugar. We like brown sugar but i will half/half it or 2/3 cane with 1/3 brown. Thankyou for responding, 🤗
Funny story, I had a beautiful chicken I named Sassy. "She" was beautiful. I was so excited for 'her" to start laying eggs. One day I noticed "she" was crowing 🐓. As Sassy got to be more adult looking I had to change the name. Sassy became a Sasquatch. He was mean and rude to all my ladies. He ended up in a stew pot due to his poor personality. He had no manners what so ever with the ladies. The other roosters would run him all over the place but he always managed to hurt my ladies. I had one lady I named Ebony who was an amazing momma and layer. Sasquatch would start after her and Ebony would run and fly onto my shoulder so he couldn't harm her. We get to name our chickens what we like. No shame in your game. If she is laying then Albert it is. 🐔🐓

One thing I distinctly remember about pears is that they dull your knife faster than you can sharpen it. Labor of love

I think that 222 mark is just right. They will get stiff quick if you get much hotter.

I like the last jalapeño peppers of the year. I let em stay on and turn red. I dry and smoke em.
Doesn't that burn your throat and lungs????? LMAO. I know what you meant.
I have two pear tress that produce the same kind of pears....and they are very tasty....
these pears are delicious!!
Yes they are! Send us a picture of your preserves. Email address is in our about section

they are a bartlett pear and they will get soft if you rap them in newpeper and put in a cool place .. they will a long time

Do you not water bath the pear preserves?
Yes ma'am. For 10 minutes
That was a very important question! I was hoping since I did not hear or see him say anything about a water bath, that it was not required.
Do you water bath them?
Yes. 15 minutes
@@PrewittHomestead Thanks
@@PrewittHomestead 15 minutes pints, 10 minutes half-pints?
@@lydiahubbell6278 the extension office says 5 minutes for half pints. 10 for pints
My time making pear preserves $100 an hour for domestic goddess of our home.
Well, you know a kings salary is never appreciated either.
You did not check for air bubbles? How big of a deal is that?
It can be huge if you have a really big bubble. Beans are famous for trapping air.
Where is the recipe please?
Do you not have to put them in a Watergate afterwards ?
It is recommended that you water bath can them.
@10 minutes.... SSSHHHHHHHHHHHH don't wake the spouse or you'll be making the coffee!
Did you add lemon juice to your pears?
No lemon juice. Just pears and sugar
Is it ok to use brown sugar?
I personally have never used brown sugar. I would think the flavor would be much richer because of the molasses

Too thin hes cutting.

Do you cook them on low?
Actually no. About medium to medium high. But keep your eye on it.
Pears are the cousin of the apple. Apples don't grow down South. Plant pear trees, not apples. Okay.
I would rather make my own than buy some from the store that has junk in it that's bad for my body. I also love tocan.
Kieffer pears
