Out of all the guitar players you bring out for your videos I like this kid the most. He has everything I aspire to have while being half my age probably.
SpectreSoundStudios hope so, just saying I would use the clean channel only for cleaning , or a little crunch. But still in my budget, might be interesting
All you guys complaining about the sound haven't seen his line 6 spider review. Seriously, go watch that and you'll instantly appreciate the tone more. It's not the best guitar sound i've heard but for the price tag can you really complain? Absolutely not.
I first heard about this amp on your channel a few months back. The name of this amp is what caught me at fist, and then I did a bit of research. After seeing this used in a full mix, I think the decision has already been made for me. Thanks Glenn!
The Joyo Mjolnir does do well for what its worth, re - tubed with Tung Sol tubes cause the standard tubes didnt last long and run a JHS Bonzai through the front of the amp and voila! damn good sound!
While I agree that 15/20 Watt EL84 amps can achieve band volume with a 4x12 they just don't sound very good at full volume. Doesn't compress very well, gets thin the higher the volume goes and the midrange will get funky.
Glenn that pushed clean tone, how did you get it to sound like that? I own this amp and well... I really haven't got it to sound that bad. Keep up the good work though.
Man your mixes really are getting better and better. individual tones are nicer and it seems things just glue together better. Only thing I'm not a fan of is the amount of reverb on the toms, could be more subtle in my opinion.
Regarding the Joyo Mjolnir, has anyone tested if the two EL84 power tubes can be replaced with 6L6 power tubes? Then maybe compare the audible differences between a Joyo Mjolnir with EL84 vs 6L6 power tubes.
Hey Glenn! happy new year. always love the techy videos, enjoyed watchin this "delivering the goods" and didn't it just!!! Cheers Glenn. greets from England 👍
What are your thoughts about riding the fader and using large amounts of compression to make lead vocals compatible with a metal mix? I've gotten into serious disagreements with singers about this - they expect that every little whisper should be heard on top of a raging metal band. Without fail, those vocal parts are completely lost on stage. Is this kind of processing any different from autotune and quantizing?
Don't know about this one. The pushed clean sounded like angry cats and bees trapped in a tin can together. Cleans were poor compared to even a free amp sim. Distortion sounded fine. At 480, I think your average consumer could do a lot better. A mesa 50 Caliber could be had used in the US for about 20 bucks more, and you wouldn't need the drive pedal. Thanks for showing it off, Glenn!
Dumb questions: 1)how good of an amp is the cube 10GX for a budget of $200-300 2) what's the best guitar for metal that costs between 200-300 US dollars (yes, I'm poor)
Hey Glenn just thought of an idea for your intro. If you still have the direct tracks for The Eagle Has Landed, reamp it with the amp you're reviewing for amp videos.
Dont' need tons of wattage: I gig weekly on stages from small clubs to festival stages. I've had the best tone of my life, and more than enough power, with a 30watt Orange head, set usually to 15 watts. At about half volume. !!
damn, I really dislike all of the Joyo-amps... played some live, listened to lots of demonstrations, and they are all waay too shrill, harsh and sterile at the same time for my ears. weird. u guys really like that tone!?
I've got a Joyo Zombie and I absolutely love it. Thing sounds savage; great tone. Especially for a $150 20-watt solid state amp that weighs about 3 lbs. I just used it a show and the sound guy was laughing at the dinky amp. Turned it on and turned it up... that changed his tune rather quick. He was floored and talked about it for weeks with the other bands he ran sound for.
What cab(s) did you play the Joyo amps through? And where were you sitting? Your ears will obviously NOT hear what a mic-on-the-grill hears. Not to mention, moving even a foot either way, when you're playing in front of the cab, can / will dramatically change the tone you're hearing.
A bit too "thrashy" for stoner metal for my tastes but definitely has some serious potential for that genre, maybe a square wave fuzz might make that happen.
Well then.Sounds nice, but I still think I'll go for the 6505mh- little bit cheaper, and I like the tone more.I'll have to keep this one in mind, though.
Michelle Lehky I have an Orange Dark Terror. I LOVE it and I tried many lunchbox but the 6505mh have a great feature...the MSDI speaker simulation. You can use this amp without speakers (you can connect the amp directly to a mixing or PA or audio interface). This feature is amazing if you play many gigs.
this is funny, everyone is complaining how awful it sounds (hey, it must be, right? it IS chinese) but you've also used it in previous videos and people there are praising how good the lead tone sounds and want to know how you achieved it.
Imo if an amp aims to be a jack of all trades (and the mjolnir clearly tries to), it needs to deliver on atleast 3 tones: cleans (and i mean CLEANS) pushed/slightly overdriven and full on 80s hard rock/metal by its own (and i mean no pedals needed). If it doesnt, i do not consider it being a good amp. The money you save from the amp, you end up spending it on atleast a drive pedal and a noise gate (and at that point a power source too since youll probably have atleast a delay pedal to add into the mix too). So for 550/600 bucks/euros its really not that good of a choice as with those money i can buy either a 5150 3 mini or a laney ironheart or a blackstar ht 20 and a bugera (and im sure other options im not aware of too). Imo the only real good thing about this amp is the separated controls for the clean/distorted channels. Thats the only plus i feel to give it to this amp, as i didnt particularly liked the tones (especially the pushed one).
Opinions vary. Though it's a fact that people who are able to form independent thought don't form opinions based on what the "masses" say. We do our own research and find out out what works best based on personal factors. I put in the time and effort to find what works best for my budget and available space. Of course I would never use it as a live p.a. but for a monitor system for my pc it works great.
Hey Glenn! Have you checked out any Joyo pedals? I would like to hear your opinion on their overdrive, tuber, etc. because they are cheap and have good review.
Can you please make a video on some Solar equipment, and maby even campare them to other bigger brands like Chapman and so on? The guitars by Solar seem to be realy metal but how do the realy sound for the buck?
does it sound like a 5150 with a more marshallized "push" (crunch) switch? that's what I seem to get from it. the push actually sounds better than what I expected. it has that snarl.
Clean channel with push engaged is spanky! Almost Super Lead! and the OD lead tone is super articulate. Impressive! Glenn! I'm assuming you mic'd this with a cab?
That heavy tone is the shit. Just bought a Jet City 22H and this is seriously giving me a slight case of buyers remorse. Also curious about what Sonimus plugins you're checking out. I've been using their stuff for a bit and love them.
that was the same drum rhythm I had that discussion with the other person about last week sounds even better with other instruments cant help not miss the clang when he hit the drum rims on the toms still a better player than me.
You should do a video on the joyo vivo (5150) and the zombie and what there like with a 1/12 and a 2/12 and a 4/12 if you could use a decibel meter that would be dope to because then we could know where it actually would sit in the real world
Hey Glenn! I read this article about Sleep - Dopesmoker in New York Times and it says that they used 7-8 microphones to record the guitars. Is this something you could do a video about? Quote: "According to Billy Anderson, the recording engineer, the guitar tracks were recorded three separate times to thicken the sound, using custom-built amps so powerful that it wasn’t possible to stand in the same room with them. Each amp was recorded with seven or eight microphones, which gives you a sense of the dedication required to create something so loud." ( www.nytimes.com/2016/01/24/magazine/letter-of-recommendation-sleep-dopesmoker.html )
have u tried the beyer dynamic 201 mic on snare? ultimate favourite snare mic. on a well tuned snare gets so much weight while still havimg enough attack to cut through,
funny story that's totally irrelevant to the vid: about 2 years ago i was in a band with 3 of my friends. our bassist comes in with this amazing-sounding tech death song (which he played along to, and nailed it). we just said "mate, that's cool BUT WE'RE A FUCKING HARDCORE BAND!!"
Out of all the guitar players you bring out for your videos I like this kid the most. He has everything I aspire to have while being half my age probably.
Not keen on the 'pushed' clean. Sounds a bit tinny. :/
The crunch, lead and general clean tones sound awesome!
+Mark Lumsley :)
Yeah, that tone was terrible.
I trust you got that kids parents to sign the permission slip to go on the SMG Studio field trip.
lmfao!
.....what? lol
The driven clean hurts my ears
You'll live
you'd be surprised how many good mix tones sound like shit on their own
I didn't like it either, However than metal tone was really good.
SpectreSoundStudios hope so, just saying I would use the clean channel only for cleaning , or a little crunch. But still in my budget, might be interesting
Yeah it sounded horrible
All you guys complaining about the sound haven't seen his line 6 spider review. Seriously, go watch that and you'll instantly appreciate the tone more.
It's not the best guitar sound i've heard but for the price tag can you really complain? Absolutely not.
Hey Glenn, I wanted to know how you felt about the EVH 5150 series and how it compared to your 5150
I first heard about this amp on your channel a few months back. The name of this amp is what caught me at fist, and then I did a bit of research. After seeing this used in a full mix, I think the decision has already been made for me. Thanks Glenn!
Where's that glorious intro??
he meant the hair intro thingy
What a killer metal-riff!
Hearing that guitar on the clean channel I can’t help but think, *the twang is strong with this one*
I think that is the best snare sound I have ever heard from you.
2:11 bottom left, da groove
also, kid nailed those leads
The Joyo Mjolnir does do well for what its worth, re - tubed with Tung Sol tubes cause the standard tubes didnt last long and run a JHS Bonzai through the front of the amp and voila! damn good sound!
Would love to hear this vs the Joyo Zombie Glenn!
very big compliments for this video, Glenn! not too long, but super informative covering all the important stuff! very nice, greetings from italy!
Very cool solo and tone on the solo
The driven clean tone wasn't all that great, but the high gain tones were killer! Great job Glenn! Keep up the good work.
between the top shelf guitars, bass, drum kit and recording gear - the demo sounds pretty good.
While I agree that 15/20 Watt EL84 amps can achieve band volume with a 4x12 they just don't sound very good at full volume. Doesn't compress very well, gets thin the higher the volume goes and the midrange will get funky.
+hadley101 well, it certainly sounded fine with what I got out of it at volume!
Sick solo
I see the Joyo Vintage Overdrive on your desk. LOVE that little thing! I've always been pleasantly surprised by the tone vs quality that Joyo brings.
The kid on GTR is VERY good.
Right on bro your guitar player is bad ass.
Glenn that pushed clean tone, how did you get it to sound like that? I own this amp and well... I really haven't got it to sound that bad. Keep up the good work though.
I'm late but try picking harder or putting a compressor in front of it if your strings are dead.
Starts out sounding like a compliment… 😂
@@CoenBijpost oh God I just realized that lol. Might still be true though.
Man your mixes really are getting better and better. individual tones are nicer and it seems things just glue together better. Only thing I'm not a fan of is the amount of reverb on the toms, could be more subtle in my opinion.
+KernelxSanders I'm wondering how much the ADAMS are contributing?
Aka Jason Richardson's rhythm guitar player.
That was meant as a compliment. I love this guys playing
That metal mix sounded fucking killer.
Nice, another 500$ amp that is gonna cost 1000$ in Trudeauland 😒
Great drum sound.
Joyo makes some cool stuff. Absolutely love the Hot Plexi.
Wow. Despite the UA-cam compression, that sounds GREAT!
Ha ha ha, the kid is awesome :)
Wow. Christian is sick!!!
Regarding the Joyo Mjolnir, has anyone tested if the two EL84 power tubes can be replaced with 6L6 power tubes?
Then maybe compare the audible differences between a Joyo Mjolnir with EL84 vs 6L6 power tubes.
Been waiting for this! Joyo is making some poor students/guitarists very happy
Happy new year from the Netherlands, Glenn
Hey Glenn! happy new year. always love the techy videos, enjoyed watchin this "delivering the goods" and didn't it just!!! Cheers Glenn. greets from England 👍
Love the mix on this one, keep up the awesome work!!
Hey Glenn, you should try an amp that isn’t typically used for metal and see how metal you can make it sound.
Great lead sound. Sick solo!
This little bugger really shines on lead tones :O
Great video reveiw...and on that note ....another head that I have to get...😁...great to time to be a guitarist
What are your thoughts about riding the fader and using large amounts of compression to make lead vocals compatible with a metal mix? Thing sounds killer !
Fuck Mjolnir. Dude that kick drum gave me eargasms!!!
I boost it with a tube screamer because it find it sound a little duff sometimes and a mxr 10 band eq also helps with making it sound less duff
pickups in the strandberg? they look like the emg 57/66 ?
1:07
Im surprised that you have a piece of functioning Radio Shack Equipment still.
R.I.P radio shack
you will be missed
God damn had me fooled, sounds bloody incredible I want one
Love the t-shirt. Reminds me of being smacked in the head with a sledgehammer wrapped with a slice of lemon. Amp sounds better than I expected, too
Hey Glenn, please do release the multi-tracks for the demo track! I would really love to remix the whole track!
Dumb questions:
1)how good of an amp is the cube 10GX for a budget of $200-300
2) what's the best guitar for metal that costs between 200-300 US dollars (yes, I'm poor)
Dude, when the demo for the Heavy tone started, it blew my fuckin balls off.
Haha actually on a contrary to all other commentators here I liked the driven clean the most. Sounded sharp and lively - I could use it a lot
Odins balls! That was fucking brutal!
I see the Vintage Overdrive on your desk there... Maybe a full review on the few pedals you got from Joyo??
damn, I really dislike all of the Joyo-amps...
played some live, listened to lots of demonstrations, and they are all waay too shrill, harsh and sterile at the same time for my ears.
weird.

The pushed cleans? No, it's too tear-y and shrill. The heavy gain stuff, however, I liked quite a bit.
That "pushed cleans" sound, actually every sound this thing makes would be perfect for King Crimson.
Tried that with a Fender Twin. Too fizzy and squelchy for anything other than Doom.

HOLY FUCK! Thats heavy!
I was wondering are there any line 6 products you would use in your studio?

That sounds amazing! Can you do a video on the guitar cab for the money? Thanks Glenn!
The answer is 42.
Hitchhikers. Pretty clever Glen.
I don't like it! Sounds thin and weak. They sould have called it Loki's staff or something else
More like Loki's soiled trousers.
I'm listening through my Bose L1 stage pa, the same thing i always listen through. Just my opinion. I don't like it, it sounds weak.
nice try troll. Bait somebody else. lol
ha lol

Hey Glenn! Have you checked out any Joyo pedals? I would like to hear your opinion on their overdrive, tuber, etc. because they are cheap and have good review.
I love how he jives on guitar but jives twice as much on the bass
Badass.
last time i was this early- Fuck, I've never been this early! Hey Glenn!
Will you be doing a Joyo Beale st demo? Its a cheap Fender 5e3 clone but I am yet to hear a decent demo.
Can you please make a video on some Solar equipment, and maby even campare them to other bigger brands like Chapman and so on? The guitars by Solar seem to be realy metal but how do the realy sound for the buck?
Doesnt hurt that kid could shred a hello kitty guitar plugged into a toaster!!!!...
I wanna say it's Berenger, but real good.
Great review, i just think you should put some "classic heavy metal" style in the reviews.
+Pablo Eklund you mean "no computer assisted performances?"
I mean 80's riffs style, like Bark At The Moon.
does it sound like a 5150 with a more marshallized "push" (crunch) switch? that's what I seem to get from it.
the push actually sounds better than what I expected. it has that snarl.
Will you be checking out the Precision drive of the Peavey invective? (Misha Mansoor's new signature products)
Fredman Dual 57 Mircowave. Nice.
Clean channel with push engaged is spanky! Almost Super Lead! and the OD lead tone is super articulate. Impressive! Glenn! I'm assuming you mic'd this with a cab?
+Noisy Neighbors yes. Detailed in the show
Gah, yes. Into the $40 mixer. Didnt catch that. Thanks for clearing that up, man!
BRING DOWN THE HAMMER ⚡
That heavy tone is the shit. Just bought a Jet City 22H and this is seriously giving me a slight case of buyers remorse. Also curious about what Sonimus plugins you're checking out. I've been using their stuff for a bit and love them.
Unrelated but are there any plans in place for a second smg viewers contest like the oldies but baddies competition?
that was the same drum rhythm I had that discussion with the other person about last week sounds even better with other instruments cant help not miss the clang when he hit the drum rims on the toms still a better player than me.
+Troy Andrews actually, it's a different clip at a different tempo
SpectreSoundStudios so I sit cottected
Glenn could you do a review of the 6505mh? Would love to hear your opinion!
ayye, thats a badass amp
Idk if I should get this or the Tremonti signature amp.....hmmmm
You should do a video on the joyo vivo (5150) and the zombie and what there like with a 1/12 and a 2/12 and a 4/12 if you could use a decibel meter that would be dope to because then we could know where it actually would sit in the real world
Nice demo, although I'm not convinced this is an amp I would like to purchase!
Mjolnir vs. 6506 MH on a fearless gear review?
You and ADoseOfBuckly should do a collab, you both live in London, Ontario and have music related channels
YES. YES. YES.
Is this better than the joyo zombie?
Hey Glenn! I read this article about Sleep - Dopesmoker in New York Times and it says that they used 7-8 microphones to record the guitars. Is this something you could do a video about?

Stoic
Metaltone is not bad 😎
Can you try a CUBE amp, cause I'm planning on getting one in the future.
