Such a sad song - but always very popular back in the day at discos as a slow dance. As you said Gladys gives one of her most sensitive performances on this and the overall arrangement of this beautiful song is perfectly done. The piano work is flawless and those Vibraphone fills are just wonderful. I could listen to the one at 00:40 on a loop and never get tired of it!
Some of GK&the Pips later records (such as "Midnight Train to Georgia" and "Baby Don't Change Your Mind") get more attention on the oldies circuit these days, but nevertheless this one will always be the one I like best. Not a happy song, but just SO very well done.
That group repeat thing that you hear on this record was somewhat of a trademark of Gladys and the Pips (where the backing group repeats most of the lines) - it was such a well known feature of their records that Ray Stevens even lampooned it as part of a record he released in the mid 1970s called "Moonlight Special" in which he spoof Gladys and the Pips - as well as a lot of other singing acts who were famous at the time.

Gladys Knight brings it every time! I have loved her music since the 70's.
This was their last recording for Motown Records. They were unhappy in their treatment at the company and felt they weren't given the proper care due such a great act. Ironically, this song won many awards.
