I don't know if any one gave you some background info to help you navigate your Nightwish journey. I hope it helps:
Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a female fronted symphonic metal band. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. Marco is the Bassist and vocals .And there is the guitarist Emppu. Then there is Troy Donockley who is a multi-instrulmentalist and does vocals. Jukka is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai became the drummer and as of now is a permanent member.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. the 2nd one was Anette Olzon (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from the Netherlands.( power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile)
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit live ( Floor).
I hope this helps. I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. I discovered them about 4 years ago. They are unbelievable live. Their music has gotten me through some tough times. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol Stay safe.......

@@PowerfulReactions They are some of the best... The Poet and the Pendulum for instance is about the first singer they had, Tarja Turunen. Tuomas, the composer and the mastermind of Nightwish and also the keyboardist said that the pain of Tarja leaving was so great he had to actually commit suicide in the song so that he wouldn't do it in real life... all Nightwish song have a story... it doesn't matter which song you pick... the impact will be different every time...

She is flawless and she never, NEVER misses a note and if you what to hear the recording version you will find two different voices. That’s because Floor is the third Nightwish singer, so the three songs that you’ve heard so far are Floor’s version, and to be honest whatever Floor sings is amazing regardless if the song she is singing is her or not and it always sounds better than the original
Floor and Marko singing together are so good, I love it when they harmonize
I like the end of Shudder before the Beautiful's ending because of their singing.
Mind you, this concert was before their first album with Floor. As such the studio versions for all the songs in this show have a different singer.
If you check out the studio version, it will in fact be Floorless. Tarja was the singer for NW back when this song was recorded in the studio. Nightwish is definitely not your average group.😂

The entire concert is mind blowing.....this, coming from a diehard Led Zeppelin fan who saw them live back in the '70s.
When I stumbled onto this concert, I was shocked - I immediately bought the album (an absolute rarity for me).

Both made their mark with Nightwish.....and both have their core followers....but Floor Jansen has raised Nightwish's audience awareness and following to an absolute international level.

To say "she can sing anything".....is an understatement.....you have to HEAR it to truly believe it.....which means you have to accept stepping outside of your musical comfort zone.

The backdrop here is that this show (done just last year) consists of several well known music artists, each of varying genres (none of which I would seek or follow); they do not all know one another, though some are more mainstream than others and well known in Dutch circles......Floor, for all intents and purposes, comes into this group as a virtual unknown (wait till you see the looks on their faces).
During this show, each participant takes a turn in the "hot seat", sitting with the host, as each of the other participants sings a song of personal significance to the target participant.

As a child, Floor was well aware of Henk Poort, had seen him in operas and had always admired him.
To have an opportunity to actually do the Phantom Of The Opera with him was a dream come true.....and so, here they are.....with more than 7 million hits....they took the internet by storm. Suffice it to say, after this TV show and it's internet play, Floor is a household name, now.
(As an aside, she AGAIN put her metal twist on the song....TO INCLUDE, coaching Henk to utilize the gravelly voice....an absolute no-no in classical music circles.)

We don’t need to give you advice. Just everything Floor touches becomes unbelievable. Just in case you should miss it. Also check out her performances in the Dutch TV show “beste zangers” were she sings songs of other singers in her version. Really good. I believe there are about 5 or 6 on UA-cam.

Well, you do have to keep in mind these are released DVD materials, they have been cleaned up and edited. Not that that means they covered up a lot of mistakes, but I'm sure they fixed a few here and there. She is human after all

Marko (the bass player) is a great singer in his own right. Look up 'The Islander' from the Tampere concert.
Great reaction! Love your enthusiasm for the band! Floor is an incredible singer but you will find that Marco, the blonde bearded bass player, is also an amazing singer. That picture of the boat behind you reminds me of opening scene in their video for The Islander, that features mostly Marco on vocals. Although the official video is cool you should listen and react to their live performance of it at either Wembley or Tampere!!

Welcome to the Nightwish Army!! We hope you will continue to react to their songs.
Yes Floor is tall; some say she's 6'1" some say 6'2". She weighs at least 200lbs and was a competitive bodybuilder in her youth(she's 39 now). Look at her shoulders arms and legs you'll see she still works out when she has the time. Floor is taller than everyone else in the band except maybe Marko the Bassist.
This concert was her first big one with Nightwish. She had to learn all the songs in less than two days! The bandleader called her to stand in for Anette Olzon who was pregnant and she stayed. We thank her for that!!
Floor is married to the drummer in the Metal group Sabaton. He's 6'7" himself.
[BTW check out Beste Zangers, a gathering of Dutch singers who invited Floor to sing with them. The only one who knew who she was had worked with her before. She sang 'Phantom of the Opera' with Dutch Baritone Henk Poort who was the Dutch Phantom in his early career.]

Hmmm... Competitive bodybuilder... I'd like to see the sources of that statement... I NEVER read it anywhere. Yes, she works out a lot, but competitive bodybuilder, I would be very surprised ;-)
And about sizes, Marko is a bit shorter than Floor but Tuomas is taller...
Man people love to exaggerate. First never heard anything about bodybuilding, especially not competitively. She's been singing in bands since she was 17. She's also .03 inches over 6' even, which for most people would just round down to her being 6'0" in America. She's 183cm tall. She's also not the tallest in the band, though she does tend to tower over people cause she frequently wears high heels.

I think you should react to the full concert... that's the only way you'll get to know a big part of Nightwish. However, The Poet and The Pendulum and The Greatest Show On Earth are two of the most amazing and intense Nightwish songs which were not played at that show.

As for quieter songs, Tampere has a few, most notably The Islander. Wembley also has While Your Lips are Still Red. Both feature the viking bassist Marco Hietala (The other vocalist in this song) as the singer with Floor doing backup vocals. Also Wacken has a live album that is quite good.

This was your first taste of the combination of vocals - Floor's and Marco's, that's the bass guitar player with the epic beard. You will learn to love this combination in many other songs as well.
Studio versions of their songs are usually not worth reacting to because they honestly sound better live, as any Nightwish fan will confirm for you. But feel free to find those studio versions in your own time and check them out if you're interested. By the way, none of the songs from this Wacken concert were written for Floor's voice, she joined the band about 10 months before Wacken and all the songs in this setlist are from albums made with the two previous singers of Nightwish.

A little funfact ... Did you know when floor came to nightwish ist was only a couple of weeks bevor wacken and the band says to her thats she has to learn the hole set list by heart in only 72 hour

All the songs from this show were originally recorded with another singer. Floor has recorded two studio albums with them so far, one from 2015, and the one coming out next month.

There are no studio versions of the songs from Wacken with Floor. She joined Nightwish in -12. The first studio album with Floor was ’Endless Forms Most Besutiful’ in 2015. It has the 20 minute masterpiece ’Greatest Show On Earth’ on it, among others.

Wacken 2013 war ein wahnsinns Konzert. Da lohnt es sich definitiv jeden Song zu sehen.
Wenn du dann bisschen mehr im nightwish Thema drin bist musst du auf jeden Fall "the poet and the pendulum" live in Wembley anschauen.
Das haben sie auf dem letzten Konzert auf dem ich war auch gespielt. Die Stimmung war unfassbar. Du kannst dir nicht vorstellen was in der crowd los war. Da standen riesigen tätowierte, langhaarige hardrocker, Metaller-bären neben mir und haben einfach geheult. Das ganze verdammte Publikum hat geheult. Es war unfassbar gut und so heftig emotional. Das hab ich auf keinem Konzert sonst je erlebt.

Marco, the bassist is a metal veteran in finnland. He has it's own band and does solo stuff too. He has an great voice too and can growl. Floor is the only singer who can keep up and works with him, in my opinion. There are plenty of songs where they sing together and it is always fantatic. They are coming to Germany end of the year. (Fingers crossed) so if you have the oportunity to see them live, do it. It s more than worth it. Saw them two years ago and will prohably go this year. btw. if you are searching for a great and fun metal band "beast in black" they were their opener on the last tour! So mutch fun! Stay safe and enjoy the ride!

Yeah, I told you that you would love this one... I totally agree with you that Nightwish' songs are not normal, in the sense that they don't follow the classical structure of metal songs. As I say, you never know what to expect next. This is one of the main characteristics of symphonic metal as, of course, the use of the orchestration, and normally a female singer or both, male/female on the vocals. Symphonic metal started already in 1996, with the first album that created the genre, which was THELI, by THERION (still one of the most amazing albums in history). Also, when you'll listen to EPICA, you will find again that you don't know what's coming now xD. These three bands are the holy trinity of symphonic metal (personally, I would add HAGGARD, but they go on their own way (THERION, NIGHTWISH and EPICA have recognizable things in common, HAGGARD is unique and no band sounds even close to them). I really suggest anybody who reads this to try to listen to them ("Per aspera ad astra" or "Eppur si muove" would be good songs to understand what I'm talking about (Haggard don't use orchestration, they ARE the orchestra, 18 people on stage with all kinds of instruments, sopranos, male clean voices and grunts, choirs; and as the title of the songs suggest, yes, they sing parts in latin, english, german, italian. An amazing experience)...

These "what is happening again?" moments, or surprises, as you call them, are Tuomas Holopainen's specialty, you'll find nice surprises like this in most of his music. As some fans have already said - you never know what to expect. And it is just one thing among many that make his music so amazing and standing out from anything else around. I'll just repeat myself here again - Tuomas is simply a musical genius unlike any other. In the best sense.
The Recordings will be different because Nightwish had different female vocalists. I liked all of them and after Tarja leaving Nightwish I never thought she could be replaced but I was wrong and now finally with Floor I hope it will last till the enbd!
If you plan to compare the live stuff with Floor to the original albums, keep in mind that you'll be comparing her to the two previous singers, Tarja and Anette. It'll be interesting because they're all totally different in singing styles. Floor was only in the band maybe a year in 2013.

That video is also good for showing the enthusiasm of the fans when the band is performing in their home country. Tarja Turunen is a pure opera singer, and the band was originally a mix of metal and opera.
"While your lips are still red" is a special song, they composed it for a movie in a period when they had already fired Tarja but didn't have a replacement yet.
So, Marco sings it alone, and GOD he does an amazing job.
Just go and watch it in any version, but the music video is made with clips from the movie, so it adds a new flavour :D

"Does she ever miss a tone?" In 20 years I've never heard her miss a note. Ever. Arguably, maybe with some older recordings of 10th man down, where she's still trying to find her footing but with Buenos Aires she knocked that one out of the park too.

"Does she ever miss a tone?" I've seen Floor with Nightwish 3 times and once at "Raskasta joulua", and based on those I can tell you she is VERY good. I can't recall really any major hicups. At worse she might be a few hertz or maybe 1/4 of a key off here and there just to remind us that she isn't a cyborg..
