- By no means is this a comparison on who`s the better horse. Secretariat is technically in Justify`s pedigree so his blood runs through Justify.

Secretariat was a special horse, and I can say with a good amount of confidence that we will never see any like him again. Sham might have been a triple crown winner in another year, but we'll never know for certain.
Wow! I didn't realize Secretariat was that much faster. Sham was a great horse and probable triple crown winner in any other year.
Incredible. Justify was 4 seconds ahead of Secretariat at the first turn, and at the finish Secretariat won by 4 seconds over Justify.

Secretariat broke almost dead last in almost every race! However, centrifugal carried him around the curves! Honestly, IMHO Secretariat would have annihilated Justify! Not to mention Secretariat ran on his own merit. He didn't need another horse running interference!
At the top of the turn there was not much between the two but at that point Secretariat put on the after burners and accelerated, while Justify decelerated and stayed for the remainder.
That equates to 40 lengths

I don't believe Sham would have won the Belmont, something was obviously physically wrong with him. Thank God Sham's jockey pulled him up.

I believe Sham would have won the Belmont, but we'll never know. Something became physically wrong with him during the race, not going into it. Secretariat and Pincay basically ran the poor thing into retirement. My sense of what may have happened if Secretariat didn't run, would be that Sham would have gone out to the front and posted a leisurely 1:13 or so for the first six furlongs, and come home in about 1:14 to post a victory somewhere around 2:27 and change to 2:28 plus or minus. The other horses couldn't get that time.
I love justify, but Secretariat is on totally different level ! Secretariat should never be compared to any other horse ! Period !.
Justify had 2 out 3 off tracks, justify didn't have a sham, Justify never raced as a two year old, Secretariat didn't run 6 races in 112 day . justify got 75 million to stand compared to 6 million which today comes to 35 million. Over twice the money. most of his kids were 10,000 allowance runner. Justify will see. If you look at great horse in 73 Forgo went on to become one of the greatest ever.
And justify still hasn't lost a race. Forego was still horse of year in 74 75 76 77 and set track record with 138 pounds on him. i'll go along as a 3 year old when move up to older horse he lost twice. the greatest ever not by a long shot.
Secretariat would have finished 21 lengths ahead of Justify in the Belmont, it was 95 degrees and humid when Secretariat won the Belmont after setting records in both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, in other words, he came into the Belmont much less fresh than Justify. Also, the race before the Kentucky Derby Secretariat was so sick he was septic because of an infection in his mouth. I love Justify and think he is a tremendous horse, but he is not even close to Secretariat, if he was he would have beaten at least on of his track records, but he didn't even come close. I second = 5 lengths so you do the math. Some say that since Justify didn't race as a 2 year old he was much more fresh than the other horses.
I'd say justify was green & learning but he did win by 9.5 as not so with super horse off the board in his first start.or as on their quest for the triple crown at 3 Justify win all his races . Super horse loses to Angle Light & Sham in the Woodard finishing 3rd.As 3 year old so far justify 6-0 Super horse 9=3. over all records so far Justify 6=0 Super Horse 17 & 5 losing to Herbull, Stop the Music, Angle Light, Onion, Prove out. Stud fees 75 million vs 6million intotodays money would be 34.5 rounded off. Justify wins races doesn't blow himself out lose to lower class horses. Mostly hand ridden spared the whip.Its about winning that what he does. 6=0 in 112 days, breaks 100 year old curses 3-0 on off tracks Super horse 2-1. You seen those hot fractions in the derby he can turn it on when needed dial it down when he don't. He justs wins like a super horse should do all the time. Not some of the time.
I love Secretariat, but Justify is on a totally different level. Justify should never be compared to any other horse! Period!. Secretariat had 5 losses and Justify has zero so far. Nuff said.
In my opinion the only horse that would have given Secretariat a run would be man o war. The rest couldn't even warm him up
bloodline Blease There is a youtube video that compares secretariat's times to man of war. It also looks at stride angles. I don't think man of war could handle big red. If you want a horse that could of been a challenge based on pure speed, look at dr fager. Mind you, dr. fager had problems being rated, always wanted to be on the lead, and they would often put a rabbit in the race to wear him out with blistering fractions. One of the fastest distance horses you'll see. Did a one turn mile out of the chute at Arlington Park in 1:32 1/5. Think that was a world record at the time. Easy Goer did the mile in the Gotham at 1:32 2/5.
bloodline Blease I hate to be the one who brings you the the truth but the last race Secretariat ran in Canada there was an old man who saw Man of War run and he said Man of War had nothing on Secretariat. Go watch the clip.
bloodline Blease: Man o' War never ran the Triple Crown! His owner didn't like the temperature and he didn't like the condition of the Kentucky Derby Track!
Man O War only had to run 100 percent in one race. The race he lost. He was stuck in the gate at the start and started way back and came from 20 lengths back to finish second by a half a head. If it makes you feel better, Man O War was Big Red's grand daddy.
Secretariat had a enlarged heart which made him 2 horses in 1 nobody is ever going to do what he did.
It is strange that Justify's trainer BB, doesn't believe in the large heart theory! However, it is said that he has done ultrasounds on some horses. I find this most curious. It would be interesting to see if Justify's heart is just a bit larger? However, it couldn't be by much. He is far from having Secretariat's speed and stamina!

Anyone think Seabiscuit would've gave Secretariat a run in a match race? Anyone who knows Seabiscuit knows he was a badass horse, but I know we're talking about Secretariat here. Like to see some thoughts.
@Michael S: Seabiscuit was quite the under rated horse. He also had a lot to overcome! I doubt that he would have beaten Secretariat, but he would have given his all:)
Seabiscuit was a pop star celebrity. He was small and fast and he brought joy to great depressed Americans. Beat Big Read? NO CHANCE.
Secretariat went from last to first, running each quarter mile FASTER than the previous quarter. He is on a different level.

Justify injured his heel in the derby. They bandaged and numbed him for the next 2 races. Secretariat had legs of iron. Was never injured in any race and one when he was 2, looked like he was racing in a river with the rest of the field far behind. I have it on a playlist on my channel called "When Pegasus Walked The Earth"
Now that you mention that Secretariat is in Justify's pedigree, there is a resemblance.
I take that back. If there are bloodlines similar, those lines prior to his grand grandsire. Comparing both pedigrees, there isn't anything even close back that far.
Maybe Secretariat was better, but Justify is my favorite.

That's the point. A final 2f of a 10f dirt race in 23 seconds. Horses are not supposed to do that. Beside Sham, only Zenyatta came close (but saving energy on a slower paced race).

What most people don't realise is the 1973 Kentucky Derby was no coincidence. Secretariat and Sham were cousins, both having Princequillo as their grandsire and they have the *two largest measures throughbred hearts in global recorded history*. Another cousin of theirs takes third spot, you might have heard of him as well: Mill Reef.

I think the comparison between Secretariat and Justify proves that all this mad science used by today's trainers, farriers and veterinarians can not hold a candle to the old fashion horsemanship of the past.

Also, looking at other males in his family, particularly the Princequillos (Prince John, Bold Lad, Mill Reef) there is a natural tendency for the build that Secretariat had. I think it is unlikely that Secretariat owed his ability even in part to anabolic steroids. I think Cigar's groom's comments can be attributed to run of the mill trash talk."

Did you even read my entire comment? There is no proof Secretariat used steroids. How much do you know about Rood & Riddle and the things they are doing to the horse's fetus nowadays...never mind what's done after they're born...familiar with the modern training programs that only build left turn muscle or the farrier's shoeing to keep the horse running on it's toes turning left? (look what they did to Chrome) My point was perhaps it's time to look again at the old approach cause things are not getting better...FASTER AND LASTING LONGER.
+bmc06239 and there is no proof that bob baffert doesnt use cobalt,dave the anecdotal stories of EVERYONE on the backstretch....everyone of bafferts horses lately have exact mannerisms of going to the front eGerly and never tiring(bode,Pharaoh,justify,game on,etc). a statistical impossibility...just cause they havent tested positive,doesnt make em clean...

Justify shouldn't even be stated in relation to Secretariat...NOT anything like him..Easy Goer AP Indy and Pharoah were close but all still 2 second behind him...That was, and remains, the best race run in the last 75 years bar none.

It is not fair to compare as one horse in on dry sand while another one is on wet sand.

Secretariat won the Belmont Stakes in 1973 by 31 lengths [a record margin] in a time of 2.24, a record time, a record that still stands 45 years later. I find that hard to believe even now - no horse wins by those margins, in a time like that now. Simply incredible!

Lexi, I will give you credit for your disclaimer "By no means is this a comparison on who`s the better horse."....but I wonder why no one shows a side by side comparison of Secretariat's first race (4th place) and Justify's first race (win)......or how about a side by side comparison of their respective races just prior to the Kentucky Derby where Secretariat ran third in the Wood Memorial while Justify won the Santa Anita Derby....its this cherry picking of Secretariat's best races (or "dressed up" races like his Belmont win) that I find disingenuous....the problem I have with most of Secretariat's delusional fans is that they conveniently forget/ignore all of the races (5) that he lost (3 as a three year old).....a supposed "Super Horse" doesn't lose 5 races in 21 races, sorry to have to state the obvious (at least to me).......if someone wants to claims that Man o'War was a Super Horse (1 loss), I would have no problem with that......I will admit that before I really studied Secretariat's entire career I just assumed that he was the best horse ever because that's what most other people (some of which I considered to be intelligent people) were saying.....
@Truth Seeker: Believe it or not, Secretariat had an abscess in his mouth when he ran the Wood Memorial before the KY Derby! Ron Turcotte could not get him to take the bit, he kept shaking his head. He tried to get word out to the trainer to no avail. He should have been scratched! Could you run your best with an abscessed tooth? The mouth is the most sensitive part of the horse! OK, he lost some races. Some of our best athletes have lost, however, they learn from that! Justify didn't run as a 2 year old. He was a fresh 3 year old! Yes he is talented and beautiful. However, don't dog a sick horse for losing a race he shouldn't have run in the first place. You are aware after the Wood, he was checked by the vet and the diagnosis was made. Eddie Sweat may he RIP, stayed up all night and put hot compresses on Secretariat's mouth. When they took him out to run, he was back. Obviously, he won the KD!
Patty, I have heard that story as well which is a very valid excuse but it is still an excuse......Justify has not even lost yet but is still nit picked to death by his haters which are many....
@Truth Seeker: I certainly don't hate Justify. I just detest the strategy used when he ran the Belmont. Yes, I know that it is legal. However, legal or not I have a hard time believing that he won on his own merit. Let's not make excuses as to why he did not run as a 2 year old! Why did they have to put Restoring Hope in to run interference? Oh, because Bob Baffert beat another trainer to it! Seriously, I love the horses but "The Sport Of Kings", is beginning to wane from what it was intended to be! There will always be haters. However, I truly believe the teachings of William Nack(may he RIP). He shadowed Secretariat for 40 days before the races. Secretariat haters should read his books. If they can't read, he was a wonderful orator and you can find his chronicles on UA-cam.
Baffart was just making sure that the race was run fairly after Good Magic was used as a rabbit in the Preakness and Noble Indy was going to be used as a rabbit in the Belmont......I was one of the few people who complained about the use of Good Magic in the Preakness.....then when Baffert fights back people cry foul.....there are just as many Baffert haters as there are Justify haters....just sour grapes not a legitimate pursuit of integrity (IMO)......
Im srry but fact prove that secteatriat would have one... he has more speed more stamina then any other horse to step foot on the track.

Don't compare Secretariat to that stable horse called Justify. Secretariat in today's time would have shattered the records he set period. The horse's today are slower than the ones of yesteryear. Justify doesn't share the same bloodline as Secretariat.
David Kendall Technically, Secretariat is shown on both the dam and sire’s line, so yes actually he does share the same bloodline. Justify is Secretariat’s 4x great grandson.

Otherwise would have finished the race a little faster.
People talk about Secretariat like he was unbeatable.....Secretariat lost 5 races out of 21 races.....hardly unbeatable......Man o'War (1 loss) was a better horse, so was Native Dancer (1 loss).....I have Secretariat ranked 3rd all time behind Man o'War (1) and Native Dancer (2)......I currently have Justify ranked 6th all time based on him winning the Triple Crown while still being undefeated......
its just all races in history have been closely mimicked except for 1: the 73 belmont. no horse has come within 10 lengths of that race st 12 furlongs on dirt...and they never will..
Secretariat raced against 4 other horses that day, only one of which was any good (Sham)......more of a public workout....I would be more convinced of his greatness if he hadn't lost so many races (5).......I personally was more impressed by Arrogate's win in the 2016 Travers against 13 other horses....he set a new track and stake's record.....he buried Gun Runner by 15 lengths....Gun Runner would go on to win 2017 Horse Of The Year....who did Secretariat beat other than Sham who lost 8 races out of 13 tries.......Sham was hardly a world beater........
Truth Seeker, There were legitimate reasons why Secretariat, lose actually 4, races (due to human error), he won one race but was disqualified.
I don’t think anyone said Secretariat was unbeatable. Clearly, he wasn’t. But there is very good evidence that he was the fastest race horse that has ever lived, at least since we have be recording the times of the triple crown races. He holds the record in every one of them. I doubt we will ever live to see a single horse break all three records. I would love to be alive to see it, but I don’t think we will. Race horses are limited by genetics, and if you study the race times closely, it appears that it requires genetic mutation to rise above the crowd, as was the case with this horse. Others have had the same mutation, but couldn’t run as fast.
The biggest problem I have with the Secretariat fan boy/girls is that they cherry pick all of the good/great things that Secretariat accomplished but they conveniently ignore/forget all of his loses (5)...why don't they compare Justify's first race (win) with Secretariat's first race (4th place).... or the race that both horses had right before the Kentucky Derby where Secretariat came in third place in the Wood Memorial while Justify won the Santa Anita Derby.......that would be a more valid and balanced way to compare the two horses.....I think a more reasonable argument for Secretariat's greatness is that he had the best three Triple Crown races of any horse.....when you try to make the argument that he was the best horse ever you need to consider his 5 losses which to me moves him down the list behind Man o'War and Native Dancer who each had only one loss......

Yes, I know the Great Secretariat has passed. However his stats still remain and haven't been broken in 45 years! Now that is a Super Horse. A horse that can win the Belmont in 2.24 flat! He also has a story behind him. He has made equine history!
Ridiculous people saying secretariat was in the league By himself . Justified was in the league by himself . If justified had had the amount of races that Secretariat had had before the Kentucky derby oh my what he could've done. With lacking experience of secretariat justified won the Triple Crown making him one of the greatest horses that ever lived and truly in a league by himself.
