Given Servis' shady career and the fact that War of Will could've been killed, I think they made the right decision. The way the pack was close together at the turn made it so that if Maximum Security had gone any far out multiple horses and jockeys would've been seriously injured. The fact that Servis administered illegal drugs to horses since just makes it all the clearer that Derby officials made the SAFEST decision. I also respect Country House. Even if the race had gone smoothly, the odds were so incredibly against him that second place would've been a triumph. That horse ran amazingly, and I think more people should respect that as well. I'm sad he got so sick. He deserves to have his name on Churchill Downs. He won officially and that's that.
@@darkhorseash4337 It doesn’t matter if the jockey nor the horse purposefully bumped or not. Even if the horse spooked, it’s the jockey’s responsibility to keep control of the horse. Horse races are extremely dangerous, you’re riding at the speed of a car on a animal with delicate legs and a small tack with straps holding the rider on. Add a thousand pounds or more likely more that can flip on you when a horse falls in front of you, especially tightly packed with no room to get out of the way. Picture going forty miles per hour with no seatbelt, no windshield, not even any safety devices, and the car can flip on you, and you hit something hard enough to go to not only a dead stop, but that weight lands on you. That’s what you are riding. It’s something that stewards in ANY race penalizes riders and horses on.
These horses were bred to race, it's what they love to do. Non horse people will never understand this, these animals are not suffering, they are doing what they were born to do.
I feel bad for the trainers, owners, and rider of MS. But I have to agree it was the right call. It was a dangerous situation, and although it wasn’t on purpose and no horses got hurt, it’s still enough to dq. If he hadn’t gotten disqualified, people might try that move in other races, and they might get someone hurt. It’s sad it was such a high profile race, but I agree with the decision.
Michael Kurchak The best horse doesn’t always win, in fact, often the best horse doesn’t win. If the best horse always won, Horse racing would be a lot smaller. There would be no point in racing if you never won, and only a few horses ever did. Also, in that case, betting would be useless, because we would always know who would win.
Stop trying to stir up controversy. Maximum Security was rightfully disqualified. If there’s any controversy here, it’s that War of Will doesn’t get enough compensation here. The bottom line: you have to respect the decisions of the officials. The rules don’t go away just because it’s a big event.
Yeah, I posted a still of that on my social media to try and shut down the complainers. Maximum Security pulled off the rail and impeded two horses behind him. It's lucky there weren't dead horses and maimed jockeys. It was a simple DQ and I wish they had made it immediately rather than dithering for so long.
Tom Liberman - Exactly! Not sure if it was your still or someone else’s I saw, but anyone with hands-on horse experience who doesn’t find that image petrifying has no business handling horses, in my book.
But if you watch another angle Maximum Security never moved out until War of Will's legs were between his hind legs....ever try running straight when someone runs up behind you and gets their legs into yours Zola Budd ?
There was obvious interference in this race, but what is extremely rare is that a jockeys' inquiry was actually accepted. I've watched a lot of races. Stewards' inquiries are usually successful, jockeys' inquiries are usually not.
It’s because the foul is so obvious. Different states may have different rules for Stewart’s inquiries but the jockey’s involved are usually contacted by the track Stewart’s to make their case (in stakes races).
A Dot, jockey claimed faul....but the stewards were watching the race....they are not stupid. They knew what was going on. Country House also did disappear after this race.
Garbage headline. There is no "controversy", and there certainly wouldn't have been any if it had been any other horse race. Would anyone who says otherwise have given Scrappy T the 2006 Preakness had he crossed the line first? Maximum Security took the turn like a 2 year old horse (or a 14 year old automobile driver), and was deservedly DQed for it. And whether or not it was intentional is irrelevant.
He actually was still 2 at the time of the race regardless of his official birthday. What you you do if a horse repeatedly thrust into the back of your legs while running.
Controversial: giving rise or likely to give rise to public disagreement. There was public disagreement. Whether it was the right call or not doesn't matter. It was still controversial. Hence not a garbage headline.
Horse doping is part of this brutal sport. I worked 5 years as security supervisor @ Sunland Park Racetrack and the doping issues are out of control. Especially with qtr. horse. Not good..
Did anyone notice the three very best jockeys didn't rode in this years Derby isn't this suspicious especially knowing that neither any of these outstanding jockeys have never won the Derby except for Saez who won but lost it in the stewards room
The Derby shouldnt have been postponed. You can also see Saez trying to steer him to the rail. If you don't want these problems put less horses in the race.
You don’t know what your talking about. There was no problem. The jockey violated the rules and was placed behind the horse that he fouled. In Basketball, should three pointers still be worth points if the players foot is on the line. In football, should touchdowns be awarded if the runner almost crosses the goal line. Why horse racing should the rules not count?
@@joseflores8282 Horse racing is quite subjective, you cannot expect 20 horses to run in a straight line around a wet track. If that was the case many horses would be dq'ed in many races. Horse racing and rules don't go into a sentence together, it is a sport were half of the jockeys are coke addicts that get on drugged up horses.
@@samsonbeast2 Have you watched many horse races? Disqualifications happen. The odd part that it hasn’t happened in a Kentucky Derby. The rain does not affect the races that much ( With regards to safety ). Most tracks are made to handle wet conditions and horses have good footing on dirt or muddy tracks. The jockeys are required to control their horses. Yes, many jockeys have a problem with drugs and 20 horses is a lot for a race. It looks like this year’s was drugged, because he should have won the Preakness. I guess that drug works.
@9:20 "Where is the justice in awarding the most prized trophy in American racing to a horse that wasn't fouled and never would have reached the line first? There is no easy answer to that one" Of course there is . The horse that finished first committed a foul, in doing he caused another horse to not finish as high up in the standings as it would have otherwise. For committing that foul, the horse was disqualified and therefore the horse that finished 2nd was declared the winner. What is so hard to understand about that? This is nothing new in horse racing. It has happened before and will happen again. It just never happened at this level of a race before.
It was wrong to have disqualified him. Period. It's a 20 horse field and always a roughly run race. They broke precedence. The Kentucky Derby is not just any race, and Country House would never have won under any scenario. It was wrong. But ... if there's any bright lining to the dark cloud, it's that cheating Servis and Navarro and a bunch of vets got caught and will never train again. Thanks to the FBI, by the way. Racing is incapable of policing itself.

My first time watching horse racing as an adult. While watching this race for the first time without knowing anything, I said to myself: the jockey in pink (who won at first) and horse pushed others aside. So the final outcome confirmed what I had seen. I was thinking that an accident could have occurred.
Yeah. I get why the decision is controversial because the horse who ended up winning didn't but...it was clearly such a dangerous move by maximum security. That could've killed people or horses.
@Santiago Macahilas FBI has it on tape, Servis talked to a vet about how to dodge a positive on what he was juicing the horse with. The vet agreed to provide the paperwork to make it look like a false positive. The horse was juiced.
They should have had an investigation of the stewards and find out who made all the money on taking Maximun Security Down. That was complete bologna. 140+ years and no horse had ever been disqualified! Unforgettable and unforgivable!!!!!!!!
To a horse that wasn't fouled? What race are you watching? Country House was moved a good 2-3 paths further out because Maximum Security made a right hand turn. Just because he wasn't directly fouled doesn't mean his opportunity to win wasn't impeded.
You watch older races and see the same things happened with no mention. Many horses get mugged at the start of the race and nothing is ever done about that. This was very unfortunate to happen in such a high profile race. My friends that attended said the fans left like deflated balloons. The thought was the best horse did not win. It put a kabosh on their Derby experience. Maximum Security proved himself later, he is the real deal.
Well, rules are rules and they need to be enforced. In my opinion, War Of Will should have won and he would have if Maximum Security hadn’t cut him off

Karen, using your criteria per the deflated fans and all, they should just line the horses up on the track and let the people in the grandstand cast a ballot on who they want to be the winner. MS broke one of the major rules of racing by interfering with other horses to the point it could have killed horses and riders. The DQ was justified. The stewards could NOT overlook it.
Yeah never did understand that one! He literally wiped out half the field at the beginning of the race yet the stewards didn't think it had any influence on the outcome????
Yes Bayern should have been disqualified then, however just because the stewards missed the call then, doesnt suddenly make their call in the 2019 Derby invalid. It was the correct call to make 100%. They do need better consistency and higher accountability. But if you're trying to argue against the 2019 Derby call, just because they missed a call years earlier at an entirely different race, you're going to have to do better than that.
Poor horse. You don't need to think of animal rights or abuse when it comes to a horse race, do you? Depending on a horse or any human and jockey, the muddy ground makes you handicapped more than necessary.
You can be a Baffert fan, but he has numerous drug violations and had a string of deaths involving young horses a few years back. Even in the book on American Pharoah there were nods to him doping. He’s certainly done horses wrong quite a few times.
How was the issue surrounding the winner being disqualified so a 65-1 can be declared winner not investigated? If I was ANY US attorney that would be my first question.

He was scheduled for trial in April, it was postponed because of the coronavirus. I don't think he'll ever be allowed to train again. Jason Servis, who recently saddled Maximum Security to victory in the world's richest race, and Jorge Navarro, whose horses have earned more than $37 million since 2008, were among 27 trainers, veterinarians, and others indicted March 9 in federal court on doping-related charges in racing. The indictment specifically alleges that a designer, performance-enhancing substance was administered to Maximum Security in 2019, when he was named champion 3-year-old male.

What people don't realize is horses are doped quite often. Bob Baffert used to dope his horses all the time. This is unfortunate but in my eyes MS is a winner and will always be a champion.
Excuse my ignorance; I know nothing about horse racing. Does doping consistent to steroids and is the urine of the horse tested a certain amount of time before or after racing?
I love dummy's like Antonio..they dream of drugs and make crazy accusations with zero knowledge....horse racing is a great sport that is highly regulated...try giving people the benefit of doubt and become a positive influence rather than a negative in the horse industry...
Tvy...Horses are tested by urine and blood samples before and after races...Drugs are given by Doctors (vets)..for illness and inury their are strict rules for disobedience concerning illigal drug use..penalties are severe....
@@stanweiser3927 Appreciate your feedback; I would have thought so, but with so much controversy over the years re. doping in humans and presumably so much money on the line in racing, I was curious just how stringent testing was in racing (i.e. whether there were "tricks"/means of masking administration of an illegal substance. ) Again, this is totally out of my field, so it's good to get the opinion of those involved/monitoring the sport.
In a way justice was done, given Maximum Security was juicing and his trainer now facing jail for doping, its lucky that he didnt actually win any big races. Who knows how many others are also doping, they are probably all at it.

In horse racing it was a dangerous move. What if horses stumbled and fell? Horses and jockeys could've been killed or maimed. If you notice, one of the horses actually kicked M.S. once or twice, while trying to adjust. Saez was suspended twice more after the 2019 Kentucky Derby, serving a seven-day ban after a bumping incident at Belmont Park in June 2019 and a 10-day penalty for interference at Saratoga two months later.
I see maximum securiti error does not exist, still remains in its path.about the last turn is commonplace. The referee is dishonest, which means something's wrong with them.
bottom line - if this was so obvious a foul, why no inquiry. I have been watching races for 50 years and this was the worst DQ ever. These stewards DID not do their job. Anyone who knows racing and has bet on racing knows DQs do not happen on jockey objections (at least very very rarely).
The pricipal instigator was Jose Ortiz (no.8 horse’s jockey) to convince the second place winner to declare foul so Ortiz could improve his final position to third place and win $300.000.00. Maximum Security did move out of his lane but it didn’t not affect the result of the race. I notice that the jockey and horse supposedly fouled didn’t not cried foul. Only Flavien Prat and Country House’s jockey did and he was not affected by any foul. He got beaten by Maximum Security fairly and squarely (the better horse that day). I hope that decision will eventually get reversed to attribute the win to the right horse. In my opinion that day Jose Ortiz lost any respect I had for him.
To see the true clip of the race and not the edited version go to Ann Old father's view of it... War of Will's mouth was wide open the whole way around there the jockey could not handle him he's the one that ducked behind Maximum Security with his white eye and all...he did the same thing to Mongolian groom who had to be put down for fracturing his hind leg.... Yeah. I dont think the jockey meant to do it. But that's so dangerous for everyone involved someone could've been killed so easily
It’s something that stewards in ANY race penalizes riders and horses on.
the two horses suffered the worst while humans were fighting for money
Ain't that how it usually goes?
These horses were bred to race, it's what they love to do. Non horse people will never understand this, these animals are not suffering, they are doing what they were born to do.
I wasn't sure if I was watching The Derby or Saturday night Live
An outstanding piece by Tim Leyden.
Why? Have you ever been to the races? Do you like seeing horses breaking their legs and being put down?
Horse racing is the oldest sport in history it won't go anywhere
I love this horse he’s a fighter, he never gives up
It was the right call. This happens at the racetrack periodically. Inquiries/dq are part of horse racing.
Not in the Kentucky Derby and 20 Horses in the field and on a wet track...Worst DQ in history of the sport
People are just upset that it was in the BIGGEST horse race in the world.
But...it's still just a horse race. And it WAS the right call, I agree.
@@hayzyhorses6899 great outlook in a difficult situation.

Exactly. Especially in the mud.
Of course he was fouled. The winner was taken out at least two lanes.
The Stewards are normally asleep during the Race and you need to ring them to wake them up.
Stop trying to stir up controversy. Maximum Security was rightfully disqualified. If there’s any controversy here, it’s that War of Will doesn’t get enough compensation here. The bottom line: you have to respect the decisions of the officials. The rules don’t go away just because it’s a big event.
Yeah, war of will probs deserves more but theres no way to tell which is disappointing
Madness max never even bump or impede no 1
Max had his hind leg literally in between another colt’s forelegs. That, right there, is how horses die. The right call was made.
Yes the horse behind MS was put up MS was cause of bad handling...duhh
But if you watch another angle Maximum Security never moved out until War of Will's legs were between his hind legs....ever try running straight when someone runs up behind you and gets their legs into yours Zola Budd ?
And thats how JOCKEYS did
There was obvious interference in this race, but what is extremely rare is that a jockeys' inquiry was actually accepted.
Especially with qtr. horse. Not good..

Been in this game for decades i always thought with the derby with so many horses that you would have almost kill a horse and that's what happened
They should have had an investigation of the stewards and find out who made all the money on taking Maximun Security Down. That was complete bologna. 140+ years and no horse had ever been disqualified! Unforgettable and unforgivable!!!!!!!!
It was the right call

Yes Bayern should have been disqualified then, however just because the stewards missed the call then, doesnt suddenly make their call in the 2019 Derby invalid. It was the correct call to make 100%. They do need better consistency and higher accountability.

In horse racing it was a dangerous move. What if horses stumbled and fell? Horses and jockeys could've been killed or maimed. bottom line - if this was so obvious a foul, why no inquiry. I have been watching races for 50 years and this was the worst DQ ever. These stewards DID not do their job. Anyone who knows racing and has bet on racing knows DQs do not happen on jockey objections (at least very very rarely).
The jockey got scared and impeded another horses path, it’s clear as day and the decision although difficult, was the right one.
You are right that there should have been an inquiry ... but other then that the final decision was absolutely correct
I know why war of will"s jockey did not object. It is because war of will struck maximum security many times before his jockey pulled him up.
