Many of Mary’s suitors might have had deep feelings for her, but Matthew truly loved her. He sincerely wanted the best for her and didn’t hesitate to reason with her when she was in the wrong
What is more important is that, I think, Mary truly loved Matthew only. The way she used to look at him, we never got the same again. Mary knew she couldn't play games with Matthew exactly.
"I hope you thanked Matthew properly." "I got them to make him some sandwiches." "That's not quite what I meant." "And he asked me to marry him." "Heavens, what did they put in them."
Mary and Matthew were definitely meant for each other, they make me cry in so many scenes. It was so tragic what happened and I thought I would never get over it. But I have to say when Henry came along it was the first time since Matthew that I felt there was somebody who was suited to her. I think she put it very nicely when she said "I met my match" because he shares her wit seems to genuinely love her. I really like him too and I think they made a great choice there, although of course Mary and Matthew will not be forgotten.
After Matthew, I'd say Charles was my favorite of Mary's Men. Also if Honest Trailers ever covers this show they need to call it "There's Something About Mary."
After Matthew died, the only one of her suitors who could have made her happy was Charles Blake. They were well suited, and he challenged her similarly to Matthew.
I thought he was a decent example of “perfect on paper but no spark.” She didn’t want to jump his bones and as a widow who knew both perfect on paper and perfect in the bedroom (we assume) she wasn’t going to settle for less which I respected

Poor Evelyn Napier , he was there since the beginning but always get friend zoned. The friends that he’s brought always outranked him, but I love it that he’s still a loyal friend to Mary.
Matthew hands down! ❤️ It's not even a question, he was the love Mary's life 🌹 It's so disappointing his character was killed off 😭 The chemistry between him and Mary was insane! ❤️❤️❤️
I was surprised her relationship with Charles Blake fizzled. I suspect the cause was the actor having other commitments. I really liked Talbot when he and Mary were courting, but once they were married his character wasn't developed. Perhaps due to it being the final season. If they'd started with him being a successful businessman and his racing as hobby on the side there might have been more to do with him. Oh well, since the second movie sidelined him so Mary could act single again it seems unlikely he'll be around for the third.
Matthew was very good for Mary but I really liked Charles Blake for her, too. He had it all: looks, money, position - and he wasn’t awed by her. I never cared for a Henry at all. I didn’t sense any chemistry between them and their whole romance/courtship seemed very rushed and contrived to me.
No one compares to Matthew. It’s awkward to watch Mary and Henry’s scenes, because there is absolutely no chemistry between them. If Jullian Fellows couldn’t get creative enough to write a better love story for Mary after Matthew’s death, she should have remained single. It would have been more interesting to watch Mary reminiscing about Matthew than these boring scenes with her dull suitors.
For me, Matthew will always be my favorite of Mary's suitors. For the ones who came later, I liked Charles Blake alright, but I found Tony Gillingham and Henry Talbot to be rather dull. I feel like Fellowes could have given Mary a better story arc after Matthew died.
Of course Matthew was the best man in Mary's life. They were the great love of each other's lives. A lot of their kisses were steamy lol. Also Carson walking in on Mary and Henry making out is hilarious!! I laughed so hard. How awkward that must have been for Carson as he's such a proper person. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Mary and Mathew had dynamic and beautiful chemistry. Loved them❤️ After Matthew’s death I feel Julian should have spent time in creating chemistry with one suitor. Audience loved Matthew and Mary together so, they would not have accepted anyone so quickly and easily. I would have liked Charles Blake among the rest. Even Evelyn’s character could have been developed. He was a great friend. Unpopular choice: I would have loved Tom and Mary too. Their bond was also worth watching.
Charles Blake should have been her second husband, they had so much good chemistry together and he did have the station Mary wanted in a husband but he was still humble

I think Henry was great for Mery, he loves her,,,,, but I think their story wasn’t enough developed. It’s better to kill the character of Henry rather than divorce. Mery is so strong, she needs no husband
Frankly, I never found Lady Mary to be all that attractive, neither did I find her to have a great personality so I couldn't understand why she should have so many suitors.
Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder. I don’t agree with you. She was an attractive, loyal. brave, strong and courageous woman. She never let anyone pity on her rather she was ok to portray herself as cruel. She always apologised when she felt she was wrong.
For a long time, I’ve not like Lady Mary. Because her behaviour was not morally, honoured and adult’s one. And I like her sister Lady Edith. But one time, I liked her. The time is when she got will from Matthew after his death. After all, I think she loves Matthew deepest. I like them.
Edith who had a child out of wedlock and essentially forced a farmer to keep her child and then had to eventually leave their farm because of her selfishness?
Yeah Edith looks innocent but actually is a horrid person. Mary is sharp but is kind and fair underneath. The scene that strikes me the most is when Carson had a heart attack and spilled the wine on Edith, everyone rushed to help him, but Edith was whining, "What about my dress?"
@@OnLifeandLove remember how Ethel was reduced to being homeless with a baby begging for help and Mary could not give two shits because "We must all suffer for the choices we made" All while sitting in a castle being served coffee with her reputation still intact because her maid and mother bailed her out.
@@kpNov23 I seem to recall Edith helping out with the soldiers and caring for William on his deathbed in Season 2, both without any expectation of reward. I also saw her express concern for Ethel when Major Bryant was flirting dangerously with her that same season. I also recall her running after Mary to comfort her when Henry seemed to have been in a car crash in Season 6. Finally, the thing that made me firmly Team Edith was Edith returning for Mary and Henry's wedding even when Mary had not apologized to her for sabotaging her relationship with Bertie out of nothing but pure envy. A selfish person would not do any of those things unless there was something in it for them. I should also point out that while Edith's actions with the Drewes could have been handled infinitely better and with more tact, she did all of it not just out of a desire to protect her own reputation but Marigold's as well. If word had gotten out that Marigold was illegitimate, that little two year old girl would have become an outcast as well. Edith was also trying to figure out how she could protect her reputation and her child's and stay a part her child's life. There isn't anything self serving about wanting to stay a part of your child's life. While I agree that she could have been more sympathetic to Mrs. Drewe, the fact also remains that Edith only took Marigold back because she thought she was in real danger of losing Marigold for good, between Mr. Drewe bringing up the possibility of them moving to another estate and Violet and Rosamund's solution to the problem being to send Marigold away to some foreign school. Edith also didn't make the Drewes leave Yew Tree Farm. The show's timeline shows that Edith took Marigold back in the spring or summer of 1924, and the episode where the Drewes make preparations to leave is set in the spring of 1925. That means that Edith had no problem with the Drewes continuing to live on the Downton estate for about a year. We then see in that episode that it was really CORA who got the idea that the Drewes should be forced to leave after she notices that Mrs. Drewe has not gotten over losing Marigold. At no point in the episode do Cora and Robert ever discuss with Edith herself the possibility of making the Drewes leave. The only time Edith ever voices her opinion is after Mrs. Drewe kidnapped Marigold and Mr. Drewe said they would voluntarily leave. While I agree again that she could have been more sympathetic, the fact remains that her child was kidnapped.
