After losing her only child, Isobel absolutely deserved the happiness she found with Lord Merton.
Honestly it breaks my heart that she went though the pain of loosing her child. She truly does deserve happiness cause she really loved her child. I just want Isobel to be happy!
So very well said😢
To be fair she deserved it either ways.
And considering Lord Merton's children, he very much deserved to be happy as well lol
"If reason fails, try force!" The voice of reason in any and every situation. The Dowager Countess and Mrs. Crawley are BFF goals!!
Ikr
I got true British feels from this! 😆
It's a trait she shares with her late father, Marlborough, and the Duke of Wellington.
@@georgeprchal3924 She was trained in a hard school and she fights accordingly.
She gets the best lines
"How perfectly marvellous!"
Most romantic moment in the show by a country mile.
Did they ever show the wedding?
That and Mr Carson and Ms Hughes holding hands in the sea❤️
@@littlebitofhope1489 no. Would like to seen it. They only talk about it after at a dinner and she thanks everyone for presents.
I Loved that scene!
And who could argue with that
“How perfectly marvelous!”
I’ve always loved Lord Merton for so many reasons. He just always was the most romantic and gentle fellow. He deserved so much happiness and I’m so glad he found it finally with Isobel.
I’m so glad Lord Merton got away from his toxic family. The way Larry and the rest of his brothers treated Isobel always made my blood boil.
I'm just disappointed that Larry go the house. He didn't deserve it
How could such a nice tree bear such rotten fruit?! The actor who plays Larry did an amazing job making us all dislike him so much.
I want a Lord Merton. What a charming man.
@@rama30 I believe that there was an instance (or two) where Lord Merton explained that both of his sons were more like their mother than they were him.
@@kerriethompson2073 He also got the maintenance of the place, and the taxes.
What an incredible line
"As my son I love you.. but I have tried and failed to like you"
I get that! Family as much as we may painstakingly love them They can absolutely make it very difficult to like them!
There is a difference between loving and liking someone.
So true
sadly, I can think of one or two that this phrase would apply to, in my family.
@@candyclews4047 pray for them God moves when we pray Maybe not in our time but God always hears and answers our prayers 💕
@@juliam.mallen3181 Well, you're on a winner with this, aren't you? Prayer, along with god, gives every impression of doing absolutely nothing, but just claim that god will do it later.
Isobel and the Dowager are a force to be reckoned with. Loved their friendship.
Same
When Mrs Crawley and Merton stand up to his family... that is one of the most satisfying scenes in all of television
It sure is! That young actress doing the daughter in law role is superb--I hate her here!
@@loveisall5520exactly she’s horrid.
You know despite the constant one-uping between Mrs. Crawley and the Dowager......their friendship is absolutely genuine and wonderful.
The Dowager acting like: "only I can give Mrs. Crawley hell!" she is such an unstoppable force
Yep. I can mess with my family, outsiders cannot or I will raise hell!
😂😂😂😂 I love that!!
And who can argue with that
That's pretty universal and starts in childhood with, "No one can beat up on my baby brother but me! Anyone else who tries it will face my wrath!"
6:53 The Dowager looks momentarily flummoxed as Isobel takes command of the situation and blasts etiquette to pieces, but Violet still manages to recover and get in the last word - of course!
Love it!
I love Isobel. Mathew was extraordinarily lucky to be raised by her.
DREAMER,ITS A SHOW

It's FICTION. Please seek psychiatric help.
@@ttiroam7743
Why do people post such a silly comment? 🤣😂😅
I love how kind and caring Violet is here towards Isobel, particularly after her attitude and manner towards her previously. Can really see the beautiful development of their friendship here.
That hospital furore was business, this is personal :)
"Am I?" You can see the actual moment of realization. Her eyes show it. In that moment Isobel's eyes widen and she knows The Dowager is right. Then the panic sets in that she's loved him for some time and his time left is fleeting. Her acting is top tier.
She is a great actress, and if you like her acting make sure to watch "Wives and Daughters" if you haven't already. She is awesome!
Isobel often shows kindness and compassion and at times indignation but the few moments when she is vulnerable it pulls on the heart strings
Yes!!!! That was such a good series!!!
These 2 women are dynamite and a lighted match when together.i love it
Which is dynamite and which the match?
@@jayt9608 Both! Lol.
⁰
@@jayt9608 Isobel was dynamite & Violet was the match in season 1-3, but from season 4-6 the roles were reversed.
"Your feelings do you credit my dear, but never let tenderness bare you from a bit of snooping." "Never."
Merton is such the epitome of a gentleman of those days. . Even wearing a shirt and tie under his house robe.
My grandfather was born in 1919 and was like that until he passed. Informal was button down shirt with knit tie, corduroy pants. Not at all uncomfortable and always put together.
I've always called it a dressing gown. I'm British!
Me too.@@jochakram2363
@@purpurina5663 thank you for the very vivid description!
Maggie Smith performed marvelously in these scenes! I love the look Amelia gave Violet when she says "and who can argue with THAT" after Isobel and Dickie went to pick up his things😂
I agree, and I love the way Violet smiles as she watches Isobel go upstairs with Dickie, she was happy for her friend☺
"And who can argue with THAT?" is one of my favorite lines from the show. I love how Maggie Smith delivers it with such triumph :)
Amelia...........yuck..........and Larry....double yuck.....perfect match......and Dicky and Isobelle found their happiness.....yay..
Maggie Smith's final expression is so very full of feeling and empathy and meaning. It's an absolute triumph of acting in a single brimming glance.
this particular story line is a personal favorite - no matter one's age, one must fight for love
and a good lesson about "LOVE conquers ALL"......................YES to LOVE
"Two old fuddy-duddies who can barely manage the stairs." I know it's a serious scene but this line always makes me giggle.
So true
I am 76 and fell in love. Its exactly the same feeling as it was when I turned 21, and experienced love at first sight.
Imagine how lucky I am.
@@basvanderhoek9293, incredibly!
"I should have liked to have been married to you." As if his proposal wasn't enough 😢
It was still good and encouraging for Mrs Crawley to hear it again. Vulnerable in love.
@@hansolofholmberg2071 Every time I watch that scene it makes me quite Dewey eyed. 😢
That made her decide to make his dying wish come true.
Mrs. Crowley & the dowager countess always makes the audience feel like a fly on the wall. The acting, the delivery are always excellently done.
'Crawley' 💜
I love that the Dowager Countess And Mrs. Crawley became such good friends. Downton Abbey was such a universe unto itself. All the characters, both upstairs and below stairs, grew and changed over the course of the series. Amazing writing and characterization.
Getting rid of insidious snakes and enjoying the rest of his life with a woman that he loves - perfectly marvellous indeed!
Line of the moment
I hated Larry, but I utterly hated AND despised Amelia. She was a nasty, scheming viper!
I loved how Violet encouraged Mrs Crawley to follow her heart .. even with all her doubts ..
She truly did her good .. that was a sound advise .. never feel ashamed or back down from what your heart is calling to .. even if everyone and everything seems against it.
No one should kill the spirit ..
True
Remember, Violet was upset at the prospect of Isobel becoming mistress of Merton Hall, mainly because it would mean that she'd be seeing a lot less of her. But in the end Violet realized that her friend's happiness was more important, and from that point she had Isobel's back.
Isobel is my favorite character in "DA". What a lovely development for her, in this storyline. I just wish they had shown the wedding.
Yes! I love Penelope Wilton! She has such a wonderful screen presence!
Wouldn't what Lord Merton's son and daughter-in-law did to him be considered elder abuse in today's world?
Yes
Exactly she was acting like a batch. The Dowager fixed her wagon
ehhh slippery slope. I'm not sure it would..Sure, the isolation from friends is an issue, but with all others needs and wants attended to...Im not sure it could be considered actual elder abuse
100%
Isolation is a factor in elder abuse, esp if they're living in his house. Someone outside that little unit needs to step in to stop the abuse from escalating.
They were my favourite couple!!! Their whole courtship was so wholesome and cute. Lord Merton is a true gentleman.
I loved watching the slow evolution of the friendship over the years between the Dowager Countess and Mrs Crawley. Maggie Smith and Penelope Wilton played the roles created by Julian Barnes to perfection. I loved all the young romances he wrote for the show, but this was still my favourite storyline of all for Downton Abbey.
You mean Jillian Fellowes. He is the writer and creator of Downton Abbey.
When he says ‘how perfectly marvellous’ i well up every single time
“I’ve had a good innings! “ Trust the British to use a metaphor from the game of cricket. What a lovely script!
It's a very common expression in England - I can't vouch for elsewhere in the UK - to describe one's life, especially as it draws to a close.
Dickie is a really good and decent man, so nice to see Isobel end-up with him!
What a wonderful, wonderful happy ending between two such deserving characters. I wish we had seen their wedding, or at least a kiss between them!
meeee toooo......dang it all.........love this couple...........I wish Dr Clarkson would find a great gal too.

@@SummerRain368 Actually let’s leave Ms. Denker for Spratt. They will make a lovely couple!!🤣😂
That last scene is one of my favorites. Violet and Isobel have such a good friendship, and Violet is so ride or die and I love it.
these 2 are the best pairing in history of TV drama...as they are genuinely friends too both dames!...Maggie is always applauded for her performance but Penelope Wilton too gives as good as she gets from Violet!
yes.....Isobelle is no wall-flower....she has spunk....and not afraid of anything..........
"If reason fails, try force." are words I've lived by ever since the dowager has said them, and they have never failed me.
Love this scene.....there was no stopping Lady Violet and Isobel. How perfectly marvelous!!!!
I really like Lord Merton. A great actor brings greatness to a character.
It's like a callback to season 1 when Violet tells Cora (I quote from memory), "We are to be allies, and that is much more effective."
No force can stop the Dowager Countess and Mrs. Crawley when they team up!
Ahh... so WELL produced. So perfectly WELL produced - by ALL involved.
Thank you for posting.
Cheers
“What’s he doing downstairs!?”
“…He caught me unawares…” 😂😂😂😂😂😂
“I can’t think why I turned him down”. Amelia and Larry for a start…
Please upload the scene where Tom yells at Mary after she breaks up Edith and Bertie! It is such a good scene with those two!
YES!!! EXCELLENT scene! Mary needed that dressing down!!!
Is this the one when he calls her a coward?
@@ramandeepnijjar8281 Yes.
I could hardly stay in my seat I was so fired up! I'm only sorry she wasn't put in her place by both parents AND Lady Rosamund!
It has been in here already.
Violet and Mrs.Crawley make such a great pair of characters.
Isobel has changed a lot since she first came. I wouldn't have thought her and Violet would be so close.
I love this series! So many surprises round the corners. The Dowager of Downton is priceless as a rebel
The Dowager Countess is a DELICIOUS rebel!
The Dowager denies and condemns you for calling her a rebel. She will then inform you that she is simply expeditiously caring for family business.
Dowager: " Never let feelings of tenderness be a bar to snooping.Never."
translation: If you care about a person you have even more motivation to be nosey lol I love her stubborn logic sometimes 😂
The Dowager and Isabel’s friendship is so beautiful
The chemistry between Dame Maggie and Penelope was so special, and the growth of their relationship was one of my favorites parts of the show.
I love this so much. Violet's support of Isobel is unwavering here. She's definitely like "let's go get your man!"
The arm touch at 3:56 is everything. Easily my favourite couple at Downton!!
Mrs. Crawley and The dowager countess are a force to be reckoned with when they join forces!
This is probably one of the great scenes in the whole series. So moving.
There is just one thing that I truly love about little Miss Cruikshanks and it is this: If I was going to choose a wife for the despicable Larry Gray then she would be the one.
We are hearing them making a consolidated stand on the issue of Lord Merton, bu just think how she will rant and rage and tear Larry to shreds as soon as the door has closed behind the Dowager Duchess and Mrs Crawley!
Those two deserve each other. I imagine they will end up making each other miserable.
@@nina1522 I like the sound of that.
They got the estate which is what they both wanted all along.
@@SS11660 I think they were planning on getting it all. The money too. The estate won't pay for itself at all. It's just a money pit. Unless Larry brings in a huge income, he'd just have had to sell it before long, and they both knew it. Hence the absolutely venomous looks at Lady Violet from Miss Thing.
And as soon as she pops out the heir and spare there'll be no more booty for Larry, so hopefully she'll produce lots of girls and have to keep going.
One of the best plot points in all of Downton. I love so many things about this series of clips.
"Never let tenderness be a bar to a bit of snooping!" Ha, ha. That's a great line.
Made me emotional all over again. I love this show.
I LivE there. Ground floor. To the left. Looking at Downton. 🎉🎉
I’ll invite You all to tea when the big house go to watch tennis and cricket xx
Hope you all come 🎉🎉😂❤😂o
The Dowager Countess Grantham is one tough nutcracker. I love it.
It's funny that she didn't know what a nutcracker was when Isobel gave her one.
Thank you so much for showing the whole situation appear and resolve.. this was a wonderful, heartwarming clip!!
"How perfectly marvelous". Marvelous indeed😂
Lord Merton could have also said, “Yes, please, let’s go now!”
my favorite love story of Downton Abbey, just such beauty and love. Especially in that last scene, Dickie practically acting like the girl in the relationship, being all giddy and swept off of his feet by isobel
yuk I was team Dr. Clarkson. They would have made a great duo in that little village.
@@taroman7100 I’m with you! I love Dr Clarkson and was so disappointed when she refused his marriage “proposal”! Plus, he’s so handsome.
@@taroman7100I loved both. 😢
The entire cast's storylines were, for myself, either loved, or loved to hate, but never boring. However, I enjoyed the relationship between Violet and Isobel far and above all the rest.
I feel the same. The little tiffs that Isobel and Violet have from time to time make moments like this one even more powerful. The way that Violet put that despicable Amelia Grey in her place at the end is the Grantham version of "Nobody puts Baby in the corner."
@@vivianpowell1732 Oh yeah!! 😎🚬
Literally crying by the end and those smiles bless y'all
Great acting by all! Penelope Wilton's little mouth movement at 1:37 gets me every time.
I just went back to LQQK at 1:37......yessssssssss...she had that LQQK of "ooohhh God NOoooo...THIS is SERIOUS"....
Yes, it's a perfect example of her subtle acting. All her facial movements are so expressive without over-acting.
Aw Lord Merton was always such a sweet man
This man manages to pull my hearth strings every time
'She is MY punching bag, and you'll not cross her and crush her happiness...' I love that Lady Grantham helps Isobel in this way - so special. :)
You say “kidnap” he says “rescue”.🤣
One of my very favorite story lines!!!! Thank you!!!
Utterly Brilliant !
The script writing....the Actresses....the Scenes....the Setting...Utterly Brilliant ! 🤗❤🏴
I'll never forgive the Downtown Abbey makers to leave out this wedding!
“And who can argue with that??” Indeed
They are easily one of my favorite couples in this show!! They deserve each other!!
I'm all teary eyed .... good old girls !!!
They can be open with tears and violet is a able fighter for her campaigns.
Violet encouraging Isobel to be a bit of a busybody for once and shouting loud enough lord Merton can hear her 😂
Lol! That shouting bit was the best. Don't mess with that dame...she knows what to do and how to do it!
I love the way the relationship between Violet and Isobel changes and evolves over the course of the show. The scene where the Dowager admits to Mary what Mrs. Crawley’s friendship means to her actually made me a bit misty eyed.
Splendid acting all around. A masterclass
So many parts of this storyline are so good, but I especially love Larry deflating at 6:55. He knew that once Isobel was provoked into demanding what his father already wanted, social norms be damned, then it was all over.
Those two are a Force of Nature!
Brava, Ladies!!!
Would have loved to have seen the reaction when Larry and Amelia when they found out that Lord Merton was not dying. Those two were made for each other.
Oh my God. How much I love Maggie Smith and her Dowager Countess... seriously, she's the best, such a spectacular lady! The talent is stunning.
How is it that a man as kind & lovely as Lord Merton can have such vile and disgraceful children as that?!
Truly love this bonding moment between Isobel & Violet.... it has to be the best of the best! The older ladies of the Downton Crawley Clan are the real beasts!!! Mary is so like Cora in that aspect and Cora so like her mother-in-law Violet and Isobel so like headstrong like the aristocratic family she married into!!!
You tell em Violet!! And I did not realize pernicious anemia was considered fatal back then, now days they can treat the B-12 deficiency and if you have taken care of it early you can live a normal life!
My maternal grandmother, mother, and sister all had pernicious anemia. Easily managed now, but a little more than a hundred years ago it was a death sentence.
I love how the dowager was on miss crookshanks tail lol 😂
Nobody takes on the Dowager and wins!
So true….one can fall in love and BE in love at any age. There is no age limit in love…and no Sell By date, either! Go ahead, give it a whirl!
✨👏✨👏✨👏✨👏✨👏✨👏✨
Who, indeed? Lady Grantham.....and might I say I honor you for so valiantly standing up for your friend's happiness and chance to love. I'm proud of Mrs. Crawley for fighting for love and showing those snotty, pampered, spoiled little aristo-brats what REAL class looks like.
Lord Mertons children have his ex wifes temper and disposition 😂
I think his wife was deceased, not divorced.
@@cmtippens9209 they still have her disposition and temper
One of my favorite scenes from this wonderful production!❤
Penelope is such a great actress.
I have pernicious anaemia, but it’s no drama with the B12 medication now available. Makes me wonder what diseases that are fatal now that will be either treatable or eliminated in another hundred years.
I knew a guy a long time ago whose wife had kidney failure. She died fairly young, and just a few months before kidney dialysis became available. It was a very sad story.
The two of them together are a formidable force! Now there are role models!
They were terrifying when in opposition to one another, but when they agreed upon an item, the entire estate moved to their will, if not the entire region.
Downton Abbey never grows old! 😍😍😍
The Dowager's comment about confessing to anything more incriminating than wanting another carpet is the bwst way of answering that question.
oohhh how lovely........Isobelle GOT HER MAN.....I love her spunk......."if reason fails....try FORCE"...and..."who can argue with THAT??".........I LOVE IT................this whole series....AND...the 2 subsequent MOVIES are splendid and I am transported to another time and have loved the ride................Downton 4-everrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.......................
Oh, that is so sweet! (I was madly in love with two guys who had health problems; one died way too young before we could do anything but date, the other was my love for fifteen years. To the fictional Isobel, I say "You go girl!")
Mrs Grey: Mrs Crawley wants to kidnap you into marriage!
Lord Merton: TAKE ME AWAY!!!
One of my favorite love stories of the whole DA saga. ❤
"How perfectly marvellous" would have been a perfectly fine ending to this scene.
But of course Violet HAD to have the last line.
