I kinda agree but also this device is a lot less compromised compared to the 4A. The Pixel 4a was struggling in just under 2 years, this phone will keep chugging along for an easy 4 years and more.
I got the 7A last year in Canada for $419.99 after tax. It was $200 off during a Black Friday sale. Absolutely love this phone, so nice to use a smartphone that is easy to operate with one hand.
It's been discounted numerous times over the last few months. I would expect that trend to continue unless Google holds off on further discounts for the very reasons Marques outlined.
It's literally been on sale longer than it's been full price, they knock $150 like every month. They only made it full price again cuz of the 8a but it'll be on sale again.
I'm in Australia. I went out today to do some research on a new phone. I've only owned an iPhone. I discovered that many retailers here are offering the 8 for around $1200, which is nowhere near a new iPhone price, while you can buy the 8A normally for around $850. However, they are offering $300 cashback and $149 trade-in on my iPhone. That's around $400! Here in Australia, that is super cheap. So, it is very hard to consider much else at this stage.
They could just keep the price of the Pro the same and then lower the base 8 down to the Pixel 8A's price for promotional value. In the future an "A" series may not even be needed from Google.
The difference between the base and the pro would be too big. For the current lineup to make sense they would have to do something along the lines of $450 - $650 - $900
Pricing is set according to overpriced Apple's scheme. Even Xiaomi started pricing like that. The difference is iPhones are massively overpriced for what they offer.
Or they could make a smaller one and get rid of some extra features to keep the price down. I don't need 120 hz or face recognition. I'd rather have the rear finger print sensor like they used to have anyway. The A series has been their beat selling phone but they're killing it by making it too similar to the regular one.
@@yalamanchiliharisairakesh6016 though the pixel 8 is not that price currently, it constantly goes on sale and the latest sale was for $549. it just ended, but everyone is pretty positive it will be on sale for that price again. they probably ended the latest sale to make way for the pixel 8a's release.
I like how Marques is keeping these tech companies honest. After enough years of spec bumping and price gouging, eventually consumers will get wise and save their money.
it's wild that consumers need youtubers to tell them how to spend their money. But, that's the sad truth. the majority of people out there have zero money management skills. You could go on a vacation for the amount people spend on new phones every year.
@@AzVfLIt’s always downscaled These companies brag that they have high megapixel cameras and the pictures are 24 or 12MP Edit: I've never got a comment this popular before. Thanks!
Apart from the Cameras pixels are so trash. I have been using Pixel 8 pro since January and it performs like trash compared to other phones in the price range. It cant even play Brawlstars without overheating. It can't even fit instagram reels properly on the screen. Batterylife is trash, chargingspeed is trash. Overheats when using android auto with navigation. FORCED NAVIGATION!! Cant even turn it off so everytime I step in the car gets super hot and battery drains like hell. Screen constatly dims because on hotness so the high peak brightness also is usleess. This phone is so bad it actually feels like a scam for a €990 phone. Apart from the camera everything else is straight up trash. Then they also gave the google ai features to Samsung so that also doesnt make it stand out in anyway 😂. Good camera and its still trash quality on instagram and snapchat. Unless youre taking pictures 24/7 in the normal camera app this phone is useless
The fact 1+12 cost $699 and uses the Snapdragon Gen 3, along with other features. Who would get a base pixel, iPhone, or Samsung? Unless you’re loyal to them.
@@kindplanet1 I believe those who actually dig into the spec sheet is the minority price range (not value) > color/look > brand is what most people around me choose phone several rule out one plus 12 simply because of the color choice and camera bump design
@@kindplanet1Specs matter very littlw in todays smartphones. Every phone in midrange an up is very fast, the only thing separating them is what features they offer. Apple has its great ecosystem, so base iPhone is worth it to many, same with Samsung because it is consistently good in many ways, Pixels offer great SW experience with amazing camera. Oneplus? nah man, for years they have nothing to offee and half of their flagships are trash. This year they are decent, next year who know if they even exist? 1+ 7pro was their last great unique phone, rest is just rebranded stuff from other brands, they even lost their Android skin and feature style a while ago
i'm honestly just shocked by how thick the bezels are, i was comparing them to my pixel 8's throughout the video and i'm wowed by the chin especially😭😭 i did get slightly confused with the data comparisons as i thought you were comparing to the regular 8 (through no fault of your own i lose focus sometimes) great video!
I feel ya! I was MORE than happy with my 5a until it died on me last month. I got it at launch and it did everything and anything I needed it to do over the years. The 7 Pro I got as a replacement is amazing, don't get me wrong. But, I miss the rear fingerprint reader! My finger instinctively goes for it when I reach to get my phone out of my pocket! 😋
I really like it appearance wise, but then when I see how much screen space the rounded corners eats up, including Marques showing how some icons are even cut off by the severely rounded corners, it changes my mind.
@@Ki-lr6ub To be fair, that is a pretty easy fix. Although it is a lot, I like rounded corners but these round the display a lot which I personally would hate
The pixel 5 is peak "rounded" phone design. It's dimensions are what google should have gone with here. I also prefer rounded corners as opposed to something as *crass* as the galaxy S24 ultra. But they turned the rounded corner slider too high on this one.
A few years ago, when I went to college, I went from Samsung to a pixel. Pixel 2 XL and I swear it was your video that sold me completely on it. It has been the best phone and I love it. I've gone through 3 devices all being pixel 2 XLs since 2017. I want to upgrade so bad but I haven't found the right one yet and this economy ain't it. I've really been considering the pixel 7 or 8, but I like the smaller size of the A series phones. Hopefully my 2XL can hold out a while longer till the prices come down.
I LOVE THE SIZE OF IT. I'm also loving that Google's rumored to announce a Pixel 9 "Mini Pro". Which is exciting for people that want all the high-end features, but don't tend to watch long videos or movies on their phone/like being able to reach the top of their phones using their thumb and not needing to do weird finger gymnastics to do that.
That's crazy fast response from Marques after seeing Pixel 8A ads. I just barely finished watching Apple streaming for iPad Pro, but my mind is set for Pixel 8 after seeing Marques' video
5:05 That's why i buy previous generation flagships almost exclusively now. Its almost universally a better deal price wise instead of buying brand new mid range phones... Its pretty apparent.
Those bezels look and feel like 3step backwards. If they made it that thick atleast they should have made it symmetrical. Looks more like a 200$ toy. Looked forward to this 8a but I think im keeping my trusty old pixel 6 for now.
Bought a brand new (sealed box) Pixel 5 for $300 with a cover and screen protectors. Phone was dead out the box lol. Oh my how I missed this phone. I have been using the S24 for a while and am very happy to be back on the P5. The new stuff just seems to be churned out for the sake of the label and making releases dates. Meh - I'm nostalgic and using the P5 makes me feel quite humble. It's good enough and relevant in today's plethora of handhelds. No security updates anymore, but I don't load trash on my phone. This world is getting crazy. Cheers
I'm glad I didn't wait and scored a mint open-box Pixel 8 for less than the 8A. Still, the true flagship was the Pixel 4 from which I came from....god damn that was ahead of it's time. Phones really need longer support and I'm glad they are finally doing it now.
@@phonedroid_uz I wish Google kept and improved on that radar unlock tech. That was amazing and could very easily rival FaceID. Why does Google always get rid of the best features? Squeeze for assistant from Pixel 2, that radar face scanning from Pixel 4, those hardware fingerprint scanners in general that were last seen on pixel 5a... If they brought those all back, I believe that Pixels would sell like hot cakes, even with the Tensor. Last Pixel I had was the 7 Pro, it made me switch to the competition how bad it was. I'm thinking of going back, maybe with the Pixel 8a but I still have doubts and I still miss my old Pixel 2XL... They don't make them like that anymore.
Casual user here, I have a pixel 7a, and I really don't feel like I'd be missing out on anything if I don't get the 8 or 8a, EXCEPT the 7y software support. That is a really good selling point that I, personally, value.
@@dddtrump yes, but if you choose to sell it on the second hand market, it will better retain its value since it still has software support (or give it to a family member and still have the peace of mind that they will have software support and security patches)
This is what the base iPhones (regular iPhone 15) compete with yet the pixel can offer their latest chip and 120hz for half the price. Why do people let apple do this?
Just got mine today because my 6a finally hit the ground in a way to damage the display. Enjoying it so far and seeing as the 9 was announced, I'm glad I stuck with the A series.
I'm not even interested in some of these reviews as my interest in tech has dwindled over the years. I watch to see the quality of the video and story telling. You're the GOAT Marques.
I love the Pixel A series, as I'm still on a Pixel 6a, & I really like the size/formfactor in pocket not being so bulky, so I'm really excited for the 8a, and will pick one up when I can find one on a deal unlocked.
Still using the 3A here. Changed screen thrice and battery once. Still runs well. I don't intend to upgrade any time soon, unlimited cloud storage is too important to lose.
I really like mine, the only real issues I've had with mine is the so so finger print reader as I have worn down thumbprints, and a couple of times while outside in the summer last year I got an overheating warning trying to take photos/video, so I had to turn it off, and let it cool down a bit, otherwise it's been mostly flawless for my needs.
How are you so good at color coordination? All of the subtle objects in the backgrounds of your video complement the products so nicely, everytime. Do you use an app to judge exact colors?
I love the new curve shape it's cute. I just got the Pixel 8 Pro 512GB model at the normal Pixel 8's MSRP because Google has been keeping that thing on discount for the last 5 months.
4:52 the most Google thing would be to develop them in parallel for a while with completely different feature sets, kill off one of the two and then port over only half the features

Fun fact: I got a coupon code from Google One that took $250 off of the Pixel 8, minus another $100 from trading in my 6a. So I got the phone for about $350, or about the price of their cheapest A-Series phone (I forget which one that was. I wanna say either the 4a?). The A-series lineup was honestly a really good idea when it started and seemed like a genuinely good deal at the time, especially for an entrypoint into the Pixel series. But as time went on, the phones have been getting steadily more expensive, creeping dangerously into flagship territory, and with how often the actual flagships go on sale for around or less than the price of the A-version, it's becoming less and less of a good deal. Since we like tech hot takes around here, I'll drop this one: I think the 8a or the 9a will be the death of the A-series.
@@annurissimo1082 I've been subscribed to Google One (the cheapest plan, even), and I got an email in my inbox with a $250 coupon, plus I got more taken off from trading in my old phone. Beyond that, the Pixel 8 has been going on sale pretty often lately on its own.
Back when the phone launched, Fi was running deals to get the phone for like $300 off unlocked. Solidly agree, the A-series serves no point at the moment as long as you aren't requiring a new phone during a sale-less period and can't wait.
@@vacric I'm gonna be honest I wouldn't get the s23fe at all. I got my mom the a35 which has the same screen and nose of the feature and 256gb for 300 dollars. So it's a 300 dollar phone and this is a 500 dollar phone so almost double yet its not amazing honestly.
The same problem happened last year. I was eagerly waiting for the Pixel 7a to come out to get it, but the Pixel 7 was always going on sale for the exact same price as the 7a. So I've waited for nothing and ended up getting the 7.
They finally conquered the $500 price tag, as someone who uses the Pixel 7a, these improvements are more than substantial to make it a pretty solid phone for the price imo.
Wild of Google? Because they dropped this phone today, it’s not him consciously choosing to upload this video today, on which Apple also happened to hold their Event.

My Pixel 5a just kicked the bucket last month, so i was totally expecting to have to outright buy a new phone. I was dead set on getting a Pixel 8, but Google blew my mind when they offered me a brand new 7 Pro as a straight up replacement for my dead 5a!! Needless to say i was floored. Been loving this phone since i got it. I agree with you here, tho. I'd totally get the 8 over the 8a, even if i had to pay $50 more to do so.
@@Giant_Dwarff I bought the 5a new at launch, and even with the extra year Google added on after the issues with it were brought to light, I was way out of warranty. I don't know if it's because I was/am a Google Fi customer or not, but they initially told me that they'd be sending me a 6a as a replacement, which I was happy with. After a little more back and forth with support, the rep told me that there is an 'inventory issue' with the 6a, and that I am being upgraded to a 7 Pro as a replacement. I had to rub my eyes and re-read what they sent me! Haha! 6 days after I sent them my bricked 5a FedEx delivered a brand new, sealed in the box 128gb Obsidian Pixel 7 Pro! I was sceptical until I actually had it in my hands! I did some reading online and saw that I'm not alone. There's quite a few people that have received the 7 Pro as a replacement for a bricked 5a. I felt like I won the lottery! It's a great phone!
Same! Except They only offered me a refurbished phone same pixel 5a for 65 to 70$..... um.....Absolutely not how did they offer you a better phone? Did yours die before warranty was up? I'm on google fi and got mine straight from Google fi site
@@IDrawToothpicks I honestly have no idea. When my 5a died, I went to the Fi site and used the chat feature to talk to support. They went thru all the diagnostics with me to attempt to salvage it, but I had already done all that. They said I was out of warranty, but they'd replace it with a 6a. I was super happy to hear that, but after a few more mins they came back and said that there was an inventory issue on their end, and that they'd be upgrading me to a 7 Pro. I didn't believe them. I have shit luck to begin with, and I'm also a jaded/cynical person so I figured it was BS. I sent off my 5a to the service center, and a day after they got it I received an email telling me my new 7 Pro had shipped and was on the way. A few days later I was opening a brand new box and activating it. 🤷🏻♂️ Honestly, I was still super happy with my 5a and had zero intentions of upgrading. Although I'm very happy with this thing, I really loved my 5a!
I got my Pixel 6a in January 2023 for £299 ($375) and it's still absolutely incredible. The battery is doing amazingly, the camera won Marques' big blind test at the time, it's one-handable and seems to be invulnerable. I've never been a serial phone dropper until now - it's so slippery without a case on 😂 but I just love how it feels without a case even if it's just cheap plastic! I'll be keeping this as long as possible, I'm not seeing enough of an upgrade with the 8a to consider it at all!
0:51 "Round Spongebob vibes" - despite of the fact this is a very on-point description (and being a real trend), this really got me...good one Marques😂😂😂 (I hope I'm not the only one found this description funny)

@@N0ra23 Hello! I can honestly say after using my 8a for a few weeks. The only difference I notice is the camera is better. Performance across normal apps with average use is the same. I'd keep your 4a. I def kept mine for a backup, didn't sell it like i thought I would.
Hey, if you don't mind me asking.. how are you liking the phone now? I love my 4a but the battery is completely drained, making my phone unusable most days. I'm thinking about the 7a or 8a but they're both the same price right now.

Don’t forget not everybody is a tech enthusiast. Many people would prefer to keep the extra cash if they can’t get a deal on the 8. There is a still a market for this
a huge issue about pixel phone pricing is that they're on sale from Google literally ALL the time. Like anytime I randomly check the online Google store, solid 65% chance that they're on sale for like $200 less than their MSRP. so like yeah, the 8a is definitely a good phone for that price, but the 8 will likely be on sale for like $549 at some point (sometimes even $499, the same price as the 8a).
I got a massive Pixel 8 deal in Canada during the previous Christmas holiday season. Essentially it was a new activation with our local carrier Telus and I have the option of getting the phone for $5CAD a month. The buy it back option after 2 years is $120CAD.
The Pixel 5 a was better than the normal 5. It had a headphone jack and fingerprint scanner on the back, which was awesome to unlock it while you were getting it out of your pocket. It also had a better screen but was easily handled by 1 hand, while maintaining the awesome Pixel 5 camera. Whenever I see these new pixels reviews from Pixel 6 to 7, to 8, I see they deviated from their main selling point. The good old times of Google Pixel XL to Google Pixel 2 XL panda are long gone, they even offered FREE Google Photos space if you get Pixels, now they don't offer anything. They're just another apple & most of us won't but pixels anymore, which is sad because there's no other alternatives.
Nobody has said anything toxic or cringe. SMH. Seriously. Just because somebody pouts something negative about the product doesn't mean it's toxic. Lol. Your comment is what's cringe.
Early this year, I splurged on the 8 Pro, mainly due to the hype about the camera. I'm planning to give the phone its first workout at Dance Parade in NYC, a full day of dance performances, coming up next week.. For now, I've just had it on a stand at my desk, taking occasional calls. Then I found that, with standard settings, even though it's literally sitting there doing almost nothing, the battery was running dry in 3 days or so. After turning off most background operations, I've got it up to 7 days and change. I'm having doubts it will last through even half of Dance Parade. Is this normal battery life or did I splurge badly?
If you're gonna be filming and taking photos non-stop, then those phones can work maximum 3-4 hours. The rendering of the material can take up to a few hours. Cause it will work on 4k with 60 fps. Even the phone can get heated up and the camera will be forced to shut down
@@plevalnatebya Thanks. As it turned out, I used the Pixel from 1:54 to 7:00 p.m., taking almost 1000 photos and about 15 videos. Between battery-saving settings and putting it on airplane mode, it only went down to 32% by the end. To be fair, the videos were short, 1 to 3 minutes each, and I didn't shoot those in maximum resolution. The main problem was trying to zoom in or out. When I pinched to zoom, sometimes the app would bring up a zoom scale instead of zooming and, two or three times, it hung and blacked out the screen before taking me back to what I was shooting. Also, there's some weird haptic feedback as I'm aiming and some on-screen display that seems to be a level. At the same time, there's no noise or feedback when I tap, so I wasn't sure it was shooting sometimes. I have to do some more reading up on this camera.

Can you please do a review on xiaomi's latest budget phone that is the redmi turbo 3 (rumored to be the Poco F6) would be really interesting too see how far budget phones improved especially this one for less than 300$ having the snapdragon 8s gen3.
It will sell for around $500 as the Poco F6 same price as the pixel 8a. The Redmi Turbo 3 although basically the same phone is missing bands that you need in the west and also has the Chinese room rather than international plus you miss out on warranty.

You are right Marques! What's even weird is that The Pixel 8 Pro can be bought in retail shops for 462USD (1700 AED) in Dubai, (used in great condition). That is an insane value!
You can tell in the comments who has and who hasn't used a pixel. They are so much better than the specs seem on paper. And if you've used one, you'd know this.
Uhh yeah, not so sure about that. I've used a P7P for almost 2 years now. From subpar performance in everyday-tasks (e.g. jittery scrolling, app freezes) to overheating (again during everyday tasks like taking pictures at spring temperatures), to miserable reception (which includes terrible call quality and even dropped calls), underwhelming battery performance and frequent software bugs (just recently I wasn't able to receive calls after the march/april update and the taskbar still keeps glitching to the side of the screen, even when holding it upright), I would argue that it's actually the exact opposite of what you said.
@@PhoenixKoopion Well, the recent software issue that caused severe problems with calls has definitely also affected the 8 series. But even before that, people have been plagued with problems concerning reception and call quality. Since this comment by itself might not be sufficient/convincing, I'd recommend you just look it up yourself. You'll quickly find out that the Pixel 8 (Pro) has had similar issues as the 6 and 7 series from the getgo.
@@PhoenixKoopion the call/SMS problem is happening for many both P7 and P8 (both non, and pro) users since the March update. I'm one of them using P7. It's not that the calls are dropping, it's that people can't call you... and SMS's are coming in late, or never...
One correction: the voice icon at the bottom of the home screen actually does not take you to Google Assistant anymore, as your screen showed. It takes you to Google Voice Search which is now separate from Assistant (i.e., it no longer can *do* anything for you except search). To get to Assistant, you now have to use voice ("hey Google"), the corner swipe gesture, or the double-click on the power button if you've set that up. So Google is now really working with three different searc/assistant operators. (It's dumb.)

When you put it like that, at that price point, it really makes no sense to get an A series. How'd you get such a large discount, though?
@@annurissimo1082 I've been subscribed to Google One (the cheapest plan, even), and I got an email in my inbox with a $250 coupon, plus I got more taken off from trading in my old phone.

Back when the phone launched, Fi was running deals to get the phone for like $300 off unlocked. Solidly agree, the A-series serves no point at the moment as long as you aren't requiring a new phone during a sale-less period and can't wait.

Thick is not an issue assymetrical bezels are the issue.
The same problem happened last year. I was eagerly waiting for the Pixel 7a to come out to get it, but the Pixel 7 was always going on sale for the exact same price as the 7a. So I've waited for nothing and ended up getting the 7.

Between the battery-saving settings and putting it in Airplane Mode, it only went down to 32% by the end. To be fair, the videos were only 1-3 minutes long and I didn't film at max settings. My main problem was zooming. When I pinched to zoom, a zoom scale would come up instead, forcing me to tap out of it and try again. Two or three times, instead of zooming, the screen went black for a second or two before going back to what I was shooting. There's some weird haptic feedback, I think it's related to auto-focus. There's an on-screen display that I think has to do with indicating whether it's level. At the same time, there's no direct feedback when I tap, I wasn't sure it was shooting sometimes. However, generally, it did well, I got some nice shots, and, obviously, I need to some more reading on the Pixel camera app and its quirks.
@@wizzgamer I actually bought it here in the PH for 16,412PhP (286$) and its so good. You can remove the chinese bloatware and install google and youre all good. Though custom rom is an issue for those who want to modify, and I dont really have a problem with bands since we also have limited bands but it might be an issue for westerners.
The visible wince at 6:34 after throwing the phone made me chuckle. Like we all know that phone is probably fine, but willingly throwing a $500 piece of anything would make anyone cringe. Did Dbrand ask you to "durability test" their case live in a video? 😂
5:00 people say silly things like "Marques reviews ruin companies" the man just said 500 is reasonable for mid range wtf 😂
Those bezels are just insane
sub-200 phones from the Chinese brands have better bezels than this atrocity
@@sgejkgn exactly
@@sgejkgn true I have the redmi note 12 pro and it has more even and thinner bezels than this. At least be symmentrical smh
iphone xr vibes
If it came in yellow i wouldnt think round spongebob, im seeing straight up, minion
You are right Marques!
What's even weird is that The Pixel 8 Pro can be bought in retail shops for 462USD (1700 AED) in Dubai, (used in great condition). That is an insane value!
I was literally thinking of buying this phone and the video dropped right on time.
Lets us know if you literally buy the phone and your review when you literally use it
@@Ducktilityyou've been dropping a lot of funny comments here 😂 I appreciate it
those corners are HORRENDOUS. I hate hate hate Google's new obsession with big round corners everywhere
I too used to hate hate hate, but then I realised it's more comfortable in my jeans pockets and easier to hold big screen devices using one hand
I have a pixel 8 since it came out and I just discovered I needed to enable smooth display 😭
So fabulous! I hope you bought that little Dior bag. It is so cute. You are right. The kislux is handbag heaven.
@@anonym1034the P7P has had issues with call dropping, haven’t seen it on the 8
@@PhoenixKoopion Well, the recent software issue that caused severe problems with calls has definitely also affected the 8 series.
0:06 Bro aalready has a skin on it !
Who else misses the days where you didn’t need to spend $900+ for what’s considered a high end phone?
One correction: the voice icon at the bottom of the home screen actually does not take you to Google Assistant anymore, as your screen showed. It takes you to Google Voice Search which is now separate from Assistant (i.e., it no longer can *do* anything for you except search). To get to Assistant, you now have to use voice ("hey Google"), the corner swipe gesture, or the double-click on the power button if you've set that up. So Google is now really working with three different searc/assistant operators. (It's dumb.)
Pixel 8 is $699 on the Google Store right now, not $550
I think someone on Google saw this video and canceled the "sale price" that they had going for months.
@@binyaminzhitomirsky9640 Or I think they canceled the sale so this phone can make some sense
Got mine $609 during sale
its gets discounted very frequently
