Lotus Evora GT410 Sport drive review. Better than the Alpine A110?

  • Driving the 2019 Lotus Evora GT410 Sport. The Evora has been around since 2009 but today has a 410bhp supercharged V6 giving it 186mph performance and class leading dynamics. It sounds great too but what I wanted to know was is the Evora actually an Alpine A110 'Plus' ? Watch the video to find out..

    Simple knobs for air con is an absolute godsend. I'd be delighted to see them in a high-end sports car. I want more fan and cold, DONE in a second flat. No clicking separate buttons, rubbing tablets, or navigating menus. I just want more cold now! Done!

    This is exactly what people say they want, but don't buy. 85 grand for one of the best driving cars on the market, but its "too much" because people want their bloody fancy climate control or storage cubbies or bloomin screens all over the dash in their lightweight sports car.
    Lotus is one of the last bastions of the true enthusiast's car.

      @@Avrelivs_Gold it doesn't matter. it's got an alcantara-wrapped 3-spoke steering wheel. it's got a metal shift knob. it's got bucket seats. it's got big, clear gauges. it's got AC for when its hot, and a heater for when its cold. it's even got a stereo for your tunes. anything more just adds weight

      I couldn't agree more. And before anyone posts any comment, I suggest they actually sit down in one. My 2010 Evora felt much more upmarket than a Cayman or Boxster, which were the same price with the same spec (i.e. adding twenty-odd options from the list).

      RVINDVNCE that’s because much cheaper cars are produced in much higher volume for them it costs less to put fancy gadgets in their cars. My biggest problem with this is the stupid back seats and the fact it weighs over 1300kg which is a lot for a Lotus.

    Just a thought regarding the manual air conditioning controls, I remember a memorable quote from Gordon Murray about the McLaren F1, he said that if an F1 was found in a barn in 50 years time, he would like to think that it could be fully restored, so all the components were as analogue as possible.
    I have a 2005 Elise and I love the fact that everything is as pared back as possible, its a great design philosophy, the knurled heating control knobs, the simple speedo and rev counter, the basic switch gear, they all equal simplicity and lightness, that is Lotus personified.

      I use a 2006 Elise daily. As someone who doesn't care about interior toys I get on fine with it. The radio has been swapped with a DAB unit and that's about it. The interior is basic but they have used good quality stuff for what is there.
      The modern Lotuses (including the Elise) are actually really nicely built.

      2005 federal else owner chiming in. I deleted the stereo head unit, speakers, and A/C in the first 6 months of owning my car. I never drive with the top on, so there's no point to either of those systems to me. So I simplified and added lightness. While the cheap plastic of the interior bugs me somewhat--and I might upgrade it--the way I drive the car is such that I quickly forget the interior exists as 100% of my focus is on driving and feeling the world rush by.

I love seeing that passion come across to the viewer. A feeling so intangible that words can't always fully do it justice, yet we can see and appreciate it through this video!

    Most people that spend a great deal of money on a car generally want the reassurance from their own social class that they have made the right decision. There has to be cachet in owning it. A Lotus though is an enthusiasts car for people that just want to own it because it is different and can afford it. There are not many such people about.

      Allen Saunders . So, do you own a Lotus? I have an Evora S Sr that I’ve had since 2015, brfore that I had an Elise. I regularly drive from the U.K. to Italy, where I work, several times a year. The car has been perfect and has never had a problem. The unreliable reputation is very much something of the past, the current Lotus cars all use Toyota running gear, and Toyotas are nothing if not reliable. The Evora in particular, is a very under rated car in my opinion.

    Being a Norfolk boy I am very fond of Lotus, and remember seeing the Evora when it was unveiled at the 08 Motor Show. I wasnt blown away by it back then, mainly because I really wanted a new Esprit, and with a power figure of 276bhp, it was only 10bhp up on a Golf R - hardly breathtaking. However, when seeing one parked on the road several years later, I could appreciate the styling more, and feel that, particularly with the more recent power outputs, which, combined with it's lightness, give it low-end supercar performance, it is a worthy successor to the Esprit - which never had huge amounts of power, and most of it's life was very low. But it's not all about speed, far better to enjoy the journey than merely arrive first. And this video confirms thats what its about, it would be demolished on a track by anything by McLaren of Ferrari (which would cost 2-4x as much), but with its proper manual and light touch traction, is likely far more fun on the roads, not to mention something you would probably feel able to drive much more readily.

It may not be as robust as a Porsche RS, but it's a lot cheaper and, more importantly, Lotus will actually sell you one! Thanks again Harry for a very enjoyable video, and for reminding everyone that Lotus is still alive and kicking (and still making wonderful drivers' cars).

    A great video. It shows how capable the Evora is - and how Lotus really needs to up its PR game - the car is a gem that's in its latter development forms has been cruelly ignored. Not all 100k sportscars have to come from Stuttgart and Lotus's brand presence needs heightening amongst the millennial generation. It would be interesting if Lotus could give you one of these on a short term loan to see how it stacks up on a day to day basis.

I wasn’t sold on the Evora when it first came out, but it certainly looks like it has matured into something that demands attention. That sound is incredible. 1330 kilos is featherweight compared with its competitors and it seems it has a lovely gear change now. Damn. Food for thought.

    I enjoyed that so much. One thing that always irks me somewhat though is that how the rear seats are always completely dismissed as pointless. These seats are ideal for children up to 10 generally and have come in handy many times for when I take out my son and a friend in my Evora. As Harry pointed out even at 6'2 he needed the seat moving forward which gives a person behind leg room.
    Great review though Harry!!

    • @harrysgarage
      @harrysgarage  5 років тому +14

      Agree with your comments, I forgot to mention the rear seats, which was annoying.. I see them more as emergency rear seats, rather than usable seats for long trips, which is the same as 911 rear seats. This is also a useful luggage space for bags, coats and the like. One of my grumbles with the Cayman is you really miss that easy access 'rear seat' space you get in a 911 and that's the same with this Evora. Great you're enjoying your Evora too! Thanks for watching

      Completely agree about touchscreen cs physical controls. My wife is so scared to look away from the road even for a second I have to navigate her fingers (up, left, etc) around the climate control in my Avantime if she is driving (as its on drivers side). You need to be able to glance where it is to get your hand there, and then control it without looking. However, the Evora could be improved by having climate control - as then most the time you don't even need to use the knobs!

    Dear Harry, thank you for another formidable review! I’m happy you love it! A Lotus Evora S automatic has been my daily driver since 2012, and it puts a smile on my face every day! The automatic makes a lot of sense in Belgian traffic jams. And an average driver cannot change gears as quickly as the automatic. Funny you talked about the sound of the Alfa V6 sound. I have likened the Lotus Evora S’s sound to an Alfa GTV6 I drove in earlier days. Simply an aural delight. Keep your super reviews coming Harry! Honest, knowledge-driven and you ooze positivity. Merry XMas!

  • @StarHorseLover2012

    Thank you, Harry, for this review. I was wondering why it took you so long to review this iconic Lotus product, which won Evo's PCOTY title when it came out in 2009. Strangely enough, motoring journalists seem to have mostly ignored it ever since, through its multiple evolutions. Say what you like about Lotus being a small company, not a year went by since 2009 when they didn't add a feature or a model to the range. S, IPS, GT4, 380, 400, 410, 430. Even you seem to be only just discovering it. It would have been nice to hear a bit about its history. For example, the earlier models had much smoother aethetics, a different-looking and more bespoke interior. Also, that this is the 'extreme' version, and that if you want more creature comforts you can get them, making it a useable car, with still the most rewarding and sharpest handling on the market. Anyway, your real-world and non-scripted reviews are always winners, and this is no different. This is the closest we can get to actually driving the car.

    It turns out that these reviews become a lot more nerve wracking if you've just bought one of these! I had to go IPS due to not having enough limbs for the manual, but I'm really looking forward to it. I think the cost isn't really that big a deal, mine has ended up just over six figures but the actual cost of owning the car in depreciation I don't anticipate to be that high due to strong residuals, and it's not like I'm putting it down all at once anyway. 50/50 finance for the win! Many thanks Harry, wonderful review as always!

    The problem is what do you compare the car with...the 400 was smoother with a nice armrest on the door..and better sound insulation...you can can find ex demo 2017/18 cars with low mileage for £68k I have a 2018 410 Demo at £76k and I have sold my 911T for and kept £10k...I think it’s far superior car to 718S I mean better handling, faster , and better sound...Porsche has much nicer cabin...and a new 911 is £105K with a few options....as stated I am coming from a 911T and am more than happy with Evora, I hope more people test drive them

    • @ChrisDorgan
      @ChrisDorgan 5 років тому +2

      I was looking at a 911T or a Spyder but then the GT4's & Spyder's held their money for much longer than I anticipated. The 911T was also just out of budget so I've ended up with a Vantage Roadster 20k cheaper than a GT4 or Spyder at the same year... not the same car track driving wise etc but god it feels old school, but cool old school!

    • @ChrisDorgan
      @ChrisDorgan 5 років тому +1

      @@alanwayte1688 Apparently the V12 (none S) manual is the best one to get for your money at the moment so I think you've made the right choice. Of course if you can get an S within your budget then I would say do it but the standard V12 has depreciated enough now to be an awesome car to have. I wish I could have stretched for a V12 myself but again too far out my budget. Hopefully the next car can be a step up to the V12 :D
