It's really hard to pick a car to go up against the legendary 2020 Porsche 911 Carrera S (992 Generation) but the Lotus Evora is about right 2+2 sportscar in the right price bracket. Seems about right.

I own a 964, I have worked in Porsches legal department, I own Porsche stocks, the 911 has been my favourite sports car for as long as I can remember.
But honestly? I think I'd take the Lotus Evora. Because it's just everything that used to make a 911 a great sports car. The 911 got soft. It's nowadays tainted by compromise for the sake of comfort and an easy, inviting attitude. It's become the casual's sports car. The Evora on the other hand remained pure and enthusiastic in character, which gives it an air of nobility that the 911 just doesn't have anymore.

Just fantastic work Henry. Wow. If I had to choose it would be the Lotus Evora without hesitation. Manual, power steering with feel, sound, everything. The 992 is a digital video game. Only letting you feel and know what it wants you to. It drives and you are along for the ride. Very much the opposite for the Evora. The Evora is a tool and can paint with the best of them depending on the artist. Bliss

@@JohnyMcNeal I guess the point I'm trying to make is that the Porsche is without doubt the better put together machine and the inside is definitely a step above, but the Lotus is the more striking car to look at. You have to ask why people stop and look. For me I would stop and look simply because Lotus (of any flavor) are unicorns in most of the US. I am not particularly enamored with the exterior styling of the Evora and the interior,,, well that's a big fail. That being said I would not cross shop these 2 cars. My 997.2 C2S in Porsche Racing Green gets a ton of looks, not because it's a Porsche but because the color is another unicorn.

    • @ephancock
      @ephancock 5 років тому +2

@@bobohara3974 Absolutely, with the Evora comes scarcity value but there's no doubting that the Porsche is relatively subdued in the looks department and blends in to everyday traffic more, regardless of the colour. For most that's one of beautiful things about owning a 911 or so I'm lead to believe anyway.

@@ephancock When I spend that kind of money, exclusivity is a must. The 911 shape is very common so you can park one at Home Depot and not worry that a crowd will gather, but after renting a McLaren 570S and even a BMW i8, I can attest to the joy of having something that is enjoyable to drive AND very unique/special. The added bonus with the Evora is that its drivetrain will almost certainly be more reliable than that of Porsche.

@@ngc-fo5te it’s only failing because it’s hard to make money off of trying to stay true to a true drivers car. That’s why there is hydraulic steering, option for manual transmission, no suspension setting, tries to be light, and analog gauges. Porsche tries to be this but they have a larger audience to please, so while they are superb and are one of the best cars to buy, they lack some qualities that make it a true drivers car, with some qualities being, getting heavier, more electronically controlled functions, and less noise. The feature they could have had have to be sacrificed to meet the market and ultimately make the perfect car. In conclusion Lotus is not perfect and could be way better, but Porsche built the perfect car at the expense of true drivers car.

Well; Catchpole is very good at making us all consider 'a thought' and the question of connection or comfort is a great one to finish on. For all of Porsche's might, the little 11yr old out-of-date Evora still has some tricks up its sleeves. Tricks that - being a Lotus - aren't really tricks at all but are instead a given for the residents of Hethel. 'Add lightness' we are reminded to think. 'Be a bigger part of the driving experience' is what Lotus has always been about. I get a little fed up of having all those driving sensations taken away by modern-day tech, all in the search of another couple of tenths around 'the ring', only to have them spoon-fed them back in some new, digitalised way. And that is what this new Porsche sounds like to me...

Good review. I have a buddy who has an Evora 410 sport and I got to drive it and spend time with it in a canyon, back to back with my 997 C2S, his 997.2 GT3 and his Porsche GT4. Honestly the Evora is a very fun car to drive and I am a little surprised that more of them aren’t sold and they aren’t more popular. Frankly, if I wasn’t in a Pcar, I’d be very interested in one of these instead of a corvette, m2 or m4 or the other 911 “competitors”. Why? It’s light weight, it’s a drivers car, mid engine, avail in a manual and I feel it’s a very attractive car as well. Out of these cars, it drove fairly similar to the GT4. I have never driven a 992, but my dad and brother both have 991.1 C2S and compared to those cars, the Evora feels much lighter, smaller, more nimble, easier to throw around, better steering feel but probably not as fast and stable. The exhaust sound, while nice, could be a bit louder. I kind of feel like this is what the new NSX should have been, instead of a $200k hypercar, it should have stuck with the original NSX ethos and been a lighter weight, more simple, cheaper and more reliable competitor to the 911, instead of a $200k HyperCar that comes dangerously close to the price of a lower end McLaren and Ferrari but without the panache. (This isn’t a Rip on the NSX, it’s a great car, I just think it’s going after the wrong prey and price point). I was once talking to someone about why the Evora isn’t more popular in the USA, was it the Toyota engine? Was that it is made by a small English company? What was it? His reply, nope, the car is a fantastic vehicle but the Lotus has absolutely horrible marketing and that’s the biggest thing holding it back (other than the dealer network)”.

Reading between the lines of Henry's review... If you're 50+ and have a hot young girlfriend, you will pick the Porsche -- Will the lease run out before the girlfriend? If you're under 40 and don't need the 'baggage' of a hot young girlfriend, you're probably in the market for a Lotus -- The sharper the better. 😁

Ironically the Lotus will appeal to older sports car drivers who remember what it was like to have a light weight sports car that was not fussy. And they will probably have a loving wife and a good investment portfolio that is growing every year like clockwork.
The Porsche is going to appeal more to the young man who wants to show off so that he can pick up the girl. He will keep his Porsche keys out on the table when in some really fancy bar. He will boast about his position of influence about the deals he pushed through for big money leaving out the part that it is his employer that actually owns the deal not him self.
He will convince the girl that he is a director which is true but he is not a board directer just a management director with a fancy title. The girl will be under the impression that he is well of which is true to an extent only she will not realize that the 911 is really a financial step too far for him.
If they do manage to get married he will then have to get a BMW and will tell his friends how he has to get a more realistic family car and his new wife will just keep the fake smile going. 10 years later he will have Sunday visiting rights and will only have half a salary as she will have the other half.
He will then have a string of girl friends that he spins the bull dirt to but will never marry because he cannot afford to. The will come the point in life that he does not have his youth and he will be in fast saving mode for his retirement but it will too little too late.

Having said that, I am lusting to test drive a 400 but I can’t find one anywhere near (Kentucky). The nearest dealer is In Nashville 120 miles away, and they only have one 430 in the showroom with a 117k sticker. No to the no. I’ve never spotted one on the road. AAUUGGHH!! Every part of the Porsche is more finely made and executed. Sit in the Lotus and the interior even with a factory finish upgrade package just can't compare. The thing is once the driving begins in the Lotus, none of that matters. The Lotus is an absolute joy to drive.

    Perfect little sports car.
911 is the everyman's car. It's good and does everything alright. It's the better car. The question is.. is it quite as special and hand finished as a lightweight Lotus. 🤔

I drove a 911 and the Evora GT410. The Porche is a very capable car and better finished but not as "sporty" and the exhaust note is not as good. In sport mode I felt it was harsher than the Evora and did not corner on bumpy roads as well as well as the GT410 which really steers better than the Porche. The Evora is a drivers car not a posers car and it's more fun -and cheaper.

I understand why. The size of the evora, while the performance competes more with the 911, is closer to the cayman, and let's be real, those rear seats are absolutely useless. I've been in one and the most you could get back there is a dog, not even a small child. I feel like these rear seats are kind of a waste, while in the 911 you could still transport your 0-10 year old child and otherwise shift it into a pretty useful shelf as addition to your boot.

I drove an Elise mk1 as my only car and daily driver for 12 years. I bought a Porsche 996 to overlap with and replace it ten years ago. As I got older my back stiffened up and the lotus became harder to enter/exit. Long journeys began to go from uncomfortable to painful. I loved the car but my life and age had changed. My 911 is much more of a middle aged man’s car and the little back seats are perfect for carrying the children one may be blessed with in later life.
It was a shame I couldn’t keep the lotus for weekends. I think my fantasy car is designed by lotus but with a Porsche flat six and Porsche build quality. Imagine the arguments between the English and German engineers about the compromises to achieve low weight.

Porsche is focusing more on making more money and selling more volume lately than staying true to it’s roots and building drivers cars. Don’t get me wrong, they still have great cars that many different types of people can enjoy but they could still offer several bare bones versions of their different models that focus more on drivers than the gadgets and technology that makes bad or inexperienced drivers look like good drivers. They could and should offer a 911, Cayman and Boxster with the higher horsepower engines that are available in each model but without all the expensive technology. Lose the expensive leather and carbon fiber interiors. Lose all the electronic aids and stuff that’s just there for showing off like adaptive exhaust and launch control and give consumers a car they actually have to drive themselves. The 911, Cayman and Boxster should be available with whichever engine and transmission you want from the lineup but in an actual base trim. People will buy them even if it means giving up luxuries like leather and expensive electronic aids that most never use anyway. Even models like the 911 T, Cayman T and Boxster T which are supposed to be base models aren’t really as “base” as they could be. The price of each could be much lower if things like leather interiors and the electronic aids were removed.

I like the Lotus Evora. It's looks like fun and from what you said the ride is decent. Plus it's a two seater. Not a 2 and a half. The damn 911 seems almost as old as I am.almost. Released in 64 I think. Never cared for the look through all the different variations on a theme. I'll never be able to afford either of them. So in the end my opinion doesn't mean (Use whatever you wish). First car I owned was a 61 Triumph Spitfire. That car, as you would imagine, taught me how to be a mechanic. Along with an MG a little later down the line.
I often wonder just how many millionaires are out there that can support the multi hundred thousand price tags most if these cars bring. Apparently quite a few. If the industry proves correct.

Bigger engines with turbos should have a turbo bypass valve which directs exhaust gasses straight into the exhaust and intake from a separate air box without being muffled by the turbo for around town when you’re not going fast anyway. That way you get the naturally aspirated noise and can enjoy the car at all times.

I’ll take an Exige, beat the Porsche in every KPI driving contest, and have enough cash over to put decent a Tesla in the triple garage, and a T Model Ford to temper my petrol head, and just remind me of where all this came from, and where it’s going now.
