- Thinking about buying the Firewire Sunday by Rob Machado
Well here's the new size and fin setup I'm riding after changing my board setup!
Perfect for those looking for an epic mid length in their quiver...
The Firewire Sunday created a whole heap of dilemas for those eyeing up the latest board by Rob Machado. With a full rnage from 5'6 through to 7'3 and the option for single fin, 2+1 or twin fin setups - there was a lot to take into account when choosing which one to add to your quiver!
And after initially buying and reviewing the 6'8 (which I loved as a twin fin) the Sunday was staple of my quiver.
However as I mixed up my own personal quiver to make room for new review boards my Sunday got sold. But I was still intrigued about how it handles in different sizing and fin setups - so when I got the opportunity to grab another I took the chance to test it out.
So here's what Firewire Sunday setup I'm riding now - and why it's become a firm favourite of my 2022 surfboard quiver!

Thanks for the update. You never leave a stone unturned. 😀🤙
hope it helped! Thought it would be useful for people struggling with sizing - there's too many options to choose from!
Think I've just found my new favourite surfboard review/advice channel. Love the way you do your break downs and the variety in your content
Stoked to hear it! 🤙
i agree!
Looks sick! I’ve been thinking about trying out a mid-length single-fin like this, I absolutely love the feel/flow of a single-fin longboard, so I’m sure I’d dig this! 🤙🏽
For sure - I'm loving it for that exact reason and it compliments the longboard in my quiver really well
Thanks for the update and the awesome reviews. You've convinced me: I definitely need a Sunday and I plan to use it as a "short" longboard with a single fin. Now, I'm having a bit of trouble deciding between the 7.0 and the 7.3. You seemed to lean towards the 7.3, but the 7.0 is more convenient for my travels. In your opinion, is the 7'3 a significantly better choice when using the single fin option? I'm 85 kg. Cheers
Glad you like the reviews and the Sunday is heaps fun! I haven’t personally ridden the 7’0 so I can’t make a full comparison, but given the dims I’d say it would still go really well in that sizing too. The joys of travelling with boards hey?!
Still take my 7’3 out a few times a week. After having it for almost a year, getting a chance to ride shorter sizes and seeing custom Sunday’s at Machado’s shop in Encinitas…I’d bet it was always supposed to be ridden as a 7’0 or 7’3.
Interesting to know Charles! Would love to get myself a custom Machado one day!
Love the videos! Keep it up!
What boards do you currently have in your quiver? Would love to know what you are loving after all your testing
Thanks Alan! Actually working on a blog and video about that this week! Good mixed bag of boards for sure - keep an eye out for it!
@@StokedForTravel awesome!
@@alanhart6407 quiver video is now live bro!
@@StokedForTravel great video!
Thank you for this review. Would you recommend the 7'3 for small (waist high) waves ?
No worries Pierre, glad it helped 😊
Indeed I’ve surfed it in smaller waves around waist high and it still went well. Just keep in mind that it’s pretty manoeuvrable still, so won’t be as stable as some wider mid lengths 🤙
Have you done a review on the Aloha Eco Skin mid length in the bigger sizes, e.g. 7'6"?
I haven't yet Chris - I'll add it into my list though! A buddy of mine has an Aloha in his quiver though and loves it!
thanks for this. I already have a mid-length 7'2, and my usual shortboard is around 33l, so thinking about this as a fun shorter board, say 5'7, looks about right I think. any thoughts on that end of the sizing?
Glad you liked the review Stephen! Personally I haven’t tested it out in the smaller sizes yet, but apparently it’s heaps fun as a twin fin. I’d also recommend checking out the Mashup as well if you want shorter with higher volume too, great board!
Would be good to see you doing some surfing in these reviews 🤙
Hey Nick, looks like I’ve found a filmed for future reviews 🎉
@@StokedForTravel I’m in South Africa🤣, but sure !
I'm researching a mid length to get, the Sunday intrigues me. Are you able to duck dive this? I'm 5'9" between 175-180 lbs and like to grovel. Thanks!
To be honest you’ll struggle to fully duck dive most mid length - simply due to size and volume so it’ll be more of a shallow scoop! 🤣
Great video mate, how does this compare to the 7'10 McTavish Rincon...? Cheers bro
Stoked you like it! Personally I now prefer the Rincon and it looks like it’s replaced the Sunday! Both epic boards, but the McTavish has a slight edge - although admittedly a slightly shorter length would give it a tad more performance
@@StokedForTravel thanks mate. Heading down to Byron today to check one out. I had a McTavish scooter back in the day and absolutely loved that board. 🤙🏻
@@lovelawns it's a beautiful day in the Bay today - so enjoy! Also if you do decide to go with the Sunday let me know, I've just put the Sunday up for sale (need the space for some new review boards unfortunately!) and it includes fins and everything :)
@@StokedForTravel thanks mate picked up a 7-10 Rincon. Can’t wait to get it out when the swell picks up a bit 🤙🏻
@@lovelawns yeeewwww happy days! You'll love it!
What do you think about a 6’4 ?
So I also tested out the 6'8 and that was fun, but I'm certainly preferring the 7'3 over it. Really depends on what style of board you want and the wave choice too. For me I love the fact it's almost a mini longboard, whereas the shorter models are great if thats the type of board you want to be riding
what would happen if you put a 9" single fin on a 7'3 Sunday?
In theory it would still be surfable, but it would feel pretty sluggish and stiff. The general rule is to match the inches of fin to the length of the board - which is why the 7” single fin is such a good fit. Give it a try, but I don’t think it’ll feel as fun underfoot
@@StokedForTravel thanks for the tip!
Hey mate loving your channel. I currently ride a 5’9 seaside. It’s awesome. Looking for a midlength to add to my quiver. I’m keen on the 7’0 Sunday but have read it doesn’t paddle that well compared to other midlengths?? Really want to get in earlier on those busy days! I’m 181/80 kg. Surfing mainly top end of sunny coast. Any thoughts?
I’ve had the 7’3 for a year now and I’d disagree. I’ve got another mid length (7’8) and have tried a handful of others. It paddles very well in my opinion.
@@Nick-oi6vk Stoked to hear you're enjoying it Nick!
I'd agree with Nick - it paddles well, however I would say as it's a little looser under foot it is a little less stable than some other options - but if you're looking for some performance that's always a plus! If you're based on the Sunny Coast I'd also highly recommend the Midway by Cape Collective (made in Byron). I've surfed mine up your way a bit and it goes really well - or the Broken Arrow if you want it for the bigger days!
Thanks for the feedback lads. I’m gonna give the 7.0 Sunday a go.
Chris, I’m due for another Byron trip and I reckon I will leave with a board from Cape Collective 😂🤙
@@andrewhungerford6617 enjoy! If you can test it as both a single and twin it's good to feel it out and see what suits you best! hahaha good shout on the CC on the next trip - give them a heads up though as they've been out of stock for aggggggges due to orders! The Broken Arrow is worth checking out too, my new fave for the bigger days!
which board? 7'3 Sunday or 7'4 seaside and beyond as an all rounder? thanks
tough one! Personally I ride my S&B a little shorter (6'8) and its epic in punchier waves as a performance mid length and can certainly handle more size and power than the Sunday. The Sunday on the other hand is a bit more cruisey and handles smaller or weaker surf better - so it's really going to depend on what type of waves you're riding
