In WWF in '84-85,JYD was so over it was crazy..Those fans went nuts when he danced to 'Another one bites the dust'.💥
You should have seen him when he was in Mid-South before the WWF run. He was a god here in Louisiana. From Shreveport to New Orleans to all in between. In August 2, 1980 when Michael PS Hays blinded JYD it was a up roar. The Freebirds almost got killed trying to get to their car when that happened. The local news in Shreveport did a story on JYD getting blinded. About how he couldn’t see his new born baby girl. They showed him in the grocery store be guided by other good guy wrestler trying to buy groceries. It was a big big story down here. The news cast was only 30 minutes normally, but when they did their story they added a extra 30 minutes just for that.
My Great Aunt(R.I.P) use to watch WWF TV just to see JYD and Andre The Giant.. She loved Wrestling in the South and couldn't stand the North East style but when she did watch WWF she only watched WWF for JYD and Andre The Giant cause she always found those two guys handsome..
@@kenrickeason that’s so cool. It didn’t matter if you was black, white or whatever color here in Louisiana. We all loved JYD. He was a hero to us. Also when he came to the ring he had the wheelbarrow Cadillac. That’s what they announcers called it. It was actually a wheelbarrow with car parts in it. Lol great memories of great wrestling fun.
@@robertw31968 That's Awesome!! It didn't matter.. I'm from Alabama and Jim is right! Black People in the south loved Jerry Lawler, JYD and Andre The Giant.. What we say is if the Guy or Girl is a bad ass and have a winning heart to fight against hardship the odds and win through it all is the key to get over with Black People.. No matter the Color if a Wrestler do all those things I mentioned they will get over with Black people.. Why do you think Black People love Stone Cold Steve Austin?? Cause he did the things we wanna do to our bosses and he's a man's man..
@@kenrickeason yes sir it definitely is
Ernie Ladd registering mid-sentence that he just got fired... Now I wish audio of that phone call existed!
Good grief... THIS is why Jim is a treasure. Who else would not only understand the nuances between not only the territories, but the different towns within those territories... but be able to articulate it on that level.
I usually skip over Jim's comments about modern wrestling unless it's something I think he'd like. But this is why I'm a loyal fan.
Exactly take what you like, leave and skip what you don’t. Way to actually enjoy someone’s content (cuz nowadays everyone will have some opinion or another we don’t like)
And the fact that he remembers in such detail! I couldn’t give you as exact descriptions of things that happened to me last month!!
Charisma is key. That's what all of the dorks in modern wrestling don't get.
@@Kalbuir66 Danhausen has more charisma than a lot of wrestlers nowadays. And all he more or less does is point.
That's why Cesaro never really got pushed
"BILL, your boy don't have it." I've heard that story so many times and it still cracks me up
“I didnt ask you to tell me what he couldn’t do I asked you to tell me what he could do and he shouldn’t have gone 20 minutes he should’ve beat him in 4 you’re fired”
"...and further more...what?"
The very idea of Zulu vs. Stomper selling out three weeks straight does my head in...incredible!
Damn Jim truly is the greatest wrestling mind in the world hands down.
"There was no Junkyard Dog in 1977".
There was, it just wasn't Sylvester Ritter....
I love when Jim does his Ernie Ladd impression!!!
The fact Ladd still called Watts "boss" means he knew he was likely coming back.
I certainly miss being able to watch wrestling almost all day on Saturday during the winter. And 6:05 was always TBS on Saturday once we got cable.
Cornette just gave a dissertation of his own with that encyclopedic knowledge. I predicted what the answer would be, but with all the background it makes a much stronger case.
I mean, let's be honest though. There isn't a wrestling scholar more versed than Corny. There might be people who can remember more names and dates, but when it comes to the behind the scenes, what the Booker's were doing etc? Absolutely nobody
Very young I remember Bearcat Brown and how over he was. Yep Jim is THE historian of the business.
Junkyard Dog would have been a star! I can personally attest he was so OVER with the fans!
Imagine jim cornette as the voice that gives u directions And the frustration in his voice when u make wrong turns😂😂😂
Mfs would travel the wrong way on purpose jus to hear Jim pissed off going off on drivers😂
would love a Corny GPS
@@LoPhatKao 😂😂😂
Damn it, gps, that's what it's called.. couldn't think of it for 💩😂
Cornette is in so many ways what Tarantino is to film. Not just in knowledge of his craft but his captivating way of speaking about it.
Very interesting comparison.
@@ghostface216And Big Daddy Ritter vs. Jake Roberts rivalry in Stampede Wrestling in 1979 was legendary!!
Jim always does that *SIGH* before answering the question 🤣
I agree with Jim saying a dominate 4-minute match gets people over. It worked for Goldberg. Hell, it worked for Ryback. Ryback was crazy over his first year in WWE as Ryback. The Shield got over by not even having matches. They just came out and 3-on-1ed people. They were the hottest thing in wrestling until Daniel Bryan’s rise.
People nowadays look at JYD as a textbook example of wasted potential but back in the early to mid 1980s, the guy printed money.
How did Ted Dibiase, Hacksaw Duggan and Matt Borne known as “The Rat Pack” become so famous in Wrestling History? When people talk about Mid-South, this group is among the top names mentioned
Because it was a top faction at one point of which took JYD and Mr Olympia out of the territory in respective loser leaves town matches.
And all 3 got over in the WWF as well with Bourne as Doink.
They were memorable! Crazy thing is that they were together for less than a year! They weren't even together for 8 months!
They really was the first faction.
I thought I remembered hearing Dog played college football in Tennessee. That would've certainly been a point in his favor, if I'm remembering correctly...
Turns out was wrong about Tennessee, Fayetteville University in NC. Dog's Alma Mater...
@@joelatkins5365 Fayetteville State University. Sorry dude....didn't want to be that guy, lol...but I've lived in Fayetteville my whole life.
A tag Team of Koko B. Ware & 2 Cold Scorpio would have been great.
Only if it was Koko in his prime. Older, heavier Birdman not so much.
Young KoKo Ware was a beast in that ring and could work.. 2 Cold Scorpio was a great cruiserweight wrestler..
@@kenrickeason Absolutely. I watched Koko in the beginning of his career. Freak athlete and at one time was considered to have the best dropkick in the business.
The Watts story about firing because the match with JYD should have went 4 minutes reminds of of the Goldberg and Regal situation.
JYD was over massively back in the day.. I think his weight gain and drug use stopped him from being a Super Star..
Absolutely
I agree 100%.
The story of Sputnik Monroe integrating The Mid South Coliseum is amazing
100% agree on Hobbs. I thought Wille Mack was JYD 2020.
That's who I compare Willie Mack to, cause of his bulk, build, size, except Willie could do athletic stuff.
@@rumarspencer7302 for a man his size he can really move
@@sionrouge1697 Yeah he sure can
@@rumarspencer7302 Willy and Keith Lee had a solid match a few months ago. Check it out when you get the time
@@sionrouge1697 I may do that.
Who asked this question?!? Must have been some Boston Yankee. JYD went over everywhere in the South.
You still hear older wrestling fans talk about JYD. I dont know if it was because of his cool name or because of his actual ability.
It was because of his charisma and his ability to entertain the fans. He was never the best wrestler and all his matches had to end pretty quick because by the mid 80s JYD was badly out of shape. JYD was the biggest draw and the most popular performer EVER in the Mid South territory. He was also extremely popular in the WWF, probably only second to Hogan in overall popularity.
ladd is my favorite. more stories about ladd, jyd, and bo bo please
Hell Yeah!! I want those stories too..
What are you even talking about ? JYD was USWA world heavyweight champion in 92.
Ive never seen so many people that need to get off there knees lmao
"Meaner Than A Junkyard Dog!"
I watched some JYD in Mid South . Dude could go and work. It was like two different people if you watch Mid South JYD vs WWF post 85 JYD
MidSouth he was the guy
@@rumarspencer7302 his in ring work was top notch 👍
By 1985 his drug habit had took over and he was out of shape. JYD was extremely popular but he couldn't wrestle much, he didn't sell, and he didn't take bumps.
Scott Irwin was Super Destroyer, he teamed with The Grappler
Seen a UA-cam video where Terry Landell died in Febuary.Wondering if you and Brian had heard Jim.
I posted comments on jims podcasts on UA-cam 2 or 3 times about him dying and got no response at all. Figured that was something cornette might at least mention. Maybe he's just being more respectful than we thought he would be about it. Imagine if Shitstain passed away! You think cornette would just go on and not sell that one?
Lawler and JYD would’ve made a hell of a tag team. Have Lawler do all the wrestling and give Dog the hot tag and then they both finish by slugging it out with some heel tag team.
You are a national treasure., Mr Cornette! The fact that you can recall off of the top of your head the history of wrestling in a completely unbiased way always amazes me
I had to laugh at the question. For someone who claims he's doing his dissertation on southern wrestling, he sure doesn't know much Memphis history or demographics.
Everything he knows, he learned from Wikipedia...
JYD wouldve been a bigger star then he was in THE WWF if he had been off drugs but on supplements and been in great shape because he had the IT factor. Think fat drugged out at 10% of what he was and he still got over where fans loved him.
Last Time I was this Early, Twinkle Toes McFingerBang was AEW Champion
Thank you Corny 😂😂😂 This is why I'm now a Ernie Ladd fan. 👍
Jim cornette explaining this is more entertaining than watching Aew dynamite or Aew rampage. Go figure.
IIRC Bad News Brown said that JYD was incredibly lazy in the ring. What got him over was his charisma and personality. I liked him. He was one of those wrestlers who didn't need a belt to get over.
Why Does Jyd have a tounge like a fruit roll up. He could have been in kiss with that tounge 😂
Watched continental wrestling and mempho. Liked continental matches more but liked the angles out of mempho
Leroy Brown’s real name was Ronald C. Daniels, not Leroy Rochester.

Dennis wanted to kill Jim for turning down Vince. Thats why Dennis left. He was SICK of Jim's MOUTH!!!!!
Really?
Love listening to the stories and insight Jim. Living history.
Better question: how many accounts (if any), could Jim see a racist promotion or booker pay the black guys less than the white guys below or above the Mason/Dixon line during the time of modernized social acceptance adjustments made in the late 60's through the 90's? Follow up: where was the best place for a black guy to get good money and wrestling in the territory days without employer disrespect.
JYD was making good money in the Mid South territory. I don't think he was too concerned about respect. He was in it for the money.
They called him Big Daddy Ritter in the hopes that they could replicate the success and popularity of Big Daddy over here in the UK. He was super over, and was the top drawing babyface in the UK for decades. He had a match against Giant Haystacks that drew got an audience of millions.
And he was shit
Yeah no
10:10 Amazing lesson
My brother told me a story about the JYD saying there was a storyline in which he got blinded. Apparently the fans felt so bad for him that one of the attendees brought a gun to protect him. Now he says the JYD was sitting in a chair ringside and has to pretend he's really blind because a random guy with a gun came onto the actual floor, and is saying I got ya back dawg ain't nobody doing nothing to you tonight. JYD didn't have any choice either if the story was true, because Vince's dad was definitely going to kill him for exposing he wasn't really blind, or the guy might have shot him because he wasn't right in the head. I don't know if the story is true, but it's one of the funniest things I've ever heard about wrestling. I just know JYD was thinking these mf's are crazy.
That happened in Mid-South Wrestling, not in WWF.
For such an encyclopedic mind of wrestling knowledge..how could Jim make such a mistake on Leroy Brown's name
I had a difficult time listening to Jim Cornette since I was laughing too hard at JYD's picture
JYD was a demigod down souf. My favorite black wrestler was Hacksaw Butch Reed. Their feud was amazing.
I'd say it made sense for Ladd to test JYD to be honest (I see Jim's point about how quick dominating victories can get people over but it seems better to see if people can work decently long matches being as they're inevitably going to need to work longer ones eventually, and JYD had been in the business for a few years by the time he started with Mid South so his cardio probably should have been worked on by that point being as it seems to be a pretty obvious weakness).
His point is that you have no reason to blow him up in front of the fans. Have him do 4~5 minutes. If he's sweating on the way to the locker room then that's his limit. No reason to have him out there for 12 unless he's in a tag team.
@@CornBreadtm1 I suppose that's fair. Assuming he wasn't worn out after 5 minutes, do you think booking him to go for 7 or 8 in his next match would be reasonable?
JYD was the first wrestler I ever liked.
JYD, 2, and Dusty were far and away the most over guys not in the WWF before Wildfire became the biggest baby face ever in the biz
Good content, as usual. Thanks, Jim and Brian!
This is why I love Jim. The human wrestling encyclopedia
"And further more WHAT?
It took 30 yrs for someone to ask this question?
Booker of the Year instead has Power House job to Pockets twice!!
Powerhouse Jobbs
You know what burns my ass about Jim cornette his sit up there and call everybody else garbage wrestling but praise Terry funk and cactus Jack or should I say Mick Foley WTF
The Terry Funk and Cactus Jack Deathmatch stuff is horrible. But Funk and Cactus could also do more than that and did have better matches than those
Building of stars doesn’t happen anymore. Preliminary competition is missing these days period. Especially AEW.
JYD could have been truly huge in WWF but WWF at that time had the best of the best from around the country and while JYD was an upper mid card guy for a while, they also had all time greats like Piper, Hogan, Savage etc to compete with. It's a real shame because if Dog could have kept clean, he could have had a long run as a babyface wherever he decided to go.
But that's one of the problems of today's wrestling: EVERYONE is trying to have a great match. Everyone is trying to "Steal the Show." Everyone is trying to get all their shit in one match, which results in the crowd getting bored of these wrestlers very quickly, because if you show them everything that you can do in one match, then soon there will be nothing left to see!
Why would I pay to see someone again that's shown me everything already?
I saw a bunch of those ol tapes from Memphis. They gave dog a shot with lawler, but aolt of the skits were racist. So i don't think in shape or not if he wudda made it to the top!!!
A chapter? Exactly how long is a dissertation?
Junkyard Dog could have easily succeeded in Memphis. The Snowman was the champion in Memphis for crying out loud. Snowman was awful.
Wasn't that how Warrior was put over?
10:35 and furthermore WHAT
Last blows
Leroy Rochester
WTF?
Looks like jyd ate one of pattie labelles sweet potato pies
Patty from Mississippi
How does a guy in Mississippi not know how black Memphis is?
I worked in Memphis for a short time in 2020 and I can tell you that white people are a minority there and are definitely not welcomed there! Talk about discrimination ... There were apt complexes there in which I just didn't feel safe. I finally packed my shit and got the hell outta town.
What a sorry premise for a dissertation. This is an exercise in confirmation bias. Clearly, his teacher is testing faith, not critical thinking. Questioning the false premise that JYD was held back because of his race does not even enter his mind. He’ll get punished for using the given answer.
That Shawn guy that send that email, was stupid to say he was held back for that reason, just like it would be racist and stupid to say, that a white guy has no personality cause he's white.
I’m in the UK. When I hear dissertation I think Masters degree - a post-grad (degree) qualification just below a PhD. What does dissertation mean in the States? At what level of education (age) is the questioner?
@@peterdickinson4599 the dissertation is the manuscript you have to write to get the PhD so I’m assuming it’s the same in the UK.
For Masters it’s a thesis you have to write.
@@kingfrank01 It’s the opposite in the UK. It’s a PhD thesis and a Master’s dissertation. So the questioner has a degree - probably in a related subject, is working on a PhD, and is therefore most likely to be around the age of 25. Thanks. That helps with context. The questioner included the word “race” in their question which piqued my attention. Could this be a PhD in Critical Race Theory? Do reputable institutions award qualifications in that anti-intellectual nonsense? Does that happen over there?
Why is it that Cornette is not in the WWE in this day of age while there are news about Russo begging networks to be hired again by WWE? I don't get it
Cornette doesn’t want to travel, he makes good money with his podcast, and he wouldn’t last in WWE today because he would’ve cursed out a writer (or an agent) and get sent home.
@@ThatDoesntWorkForMeBrother He's frustrated enough with the business as it is, wouldn't fit into today's era, in any promotion.
What news?
JYD was a mega star in mid-south and a Super Babyface Mid-card guy in WWF ( which he should have held a title 🤦)
knowing now how the old wrestling territories were so racist, I think JYD made the right decision leaving mid south for the wwf. I remember the old territories, world class never made the Iceman king parsons a champion, Savanah jack , Koko b ware all of them Never were given a chance to become top talent in those territories
And no black stars in the WWF were given a chance to become top talents??? Name me a Black guy in the 80s who got pushed as a champion? Or a main eventer? JYD wasn't pushed as either, Butch Reed wasn't.
Infact your opinion is the opposite way round. The Southern promotions pushed black stars more heavily than the WWF. JYD is literally the example here but after that in Mid South was Butch Reed, infact a running joke is that Watts kept bringing in big black guys to try and replace JYD (snowman etc)
Iceman King Parsons WAS pushed as a top star in World Class. He was heavily featured for a long time and put in top programs against The Freebirds etc
Savannah Jack in the UWF was being pushed too, he literally won the TV belt. Koko was also being pushed by the UWF until he left for Vince.
Your observation is really completely the opposite
