Yea I was starting to think at what number can it no longer be considered “accidental”
He also has several stories where he "accidentally" seen another wrestlers dick.
It always amazes me that "country bumpkins" knew more about business than most Wharton graduates.
Especially the wrestling business
Different subject, but similar results, I did Demolition derbys for 17 years and the promoters that had cash payouts were always the most consistent...when we got paid with checks alot of them were canceled by the time we went to deposit or cash them out. So just like wrestling, some promoters were really good about payouts and others were always shady.
I got in with some literal traveling carny’s for a year when I was in my early 20’s and if anyone received a check they wouldn’t just laugh at it, most of them probably wouldn’t even know what it was.
Motorhead711 It's not a different subject. It's the same subject. No offense but demolition derbys and pro wrestling are carny businesses. Pro wrestling deep down is carny, and will always be. But that's when it is at it's best. When things are simpler they are always better. Look at it now, it's corporate. When things go corporate they lose passion.

James "Chip" Burnham, may God rest and reward his soul. Chip was the accountant at TBS when we are NWA and transferred to Promoter in some of the WCW territories. Chip was my boss at WCW. Chip was always in a great mood and always kept in touch with me. When Corny talked about "Draws", it brought back old memories.
What was your role? and just out of interest what was it like in the final days of WCW?
@@OrbitStrike The title was assistant event coordinator. Mostly working in advance promotions, autograph sessions, and special events (bikini contest, volleyball game, driving workers to the airport if they had to catch a flight following their match). The last show I worked was Greed in Jacksonville Fl. The company was already in chaos. After the matches in Jacksonville, I remember Flair making several phone calls to either save the company or to secure the future. I did not know who he was talking with. The folks who owned more stock than Turner did not understand our business and wanted us gone. Rumor had it that Bischoff wanted to start a new promotion in Vegas or LA with Fusion as the TV Network. I guess we will have to ask Eric about that one. It seemed to be all about Hollywood Stars & Movies. Bischoff made a critical mistake. He lost the WCW fan base in attendance & ratings by burying the WCW boys. He had hired too many WWF boys and they were getting the push. Toward the end , there were many disgruntle workers and confusion.
@@diamondwchamp I remember Bischoff saying that the deal killer was them not keeping the time slot on the network. Fusion wasn’t interested in a wrestling company with no TV deal. There were less stations back then and they weren’t beating each other up to put wrestling on their stations. So,the sharp executives at Turner/AOL decided they would rather sell the valuable WCW/NWA library to Vince for 2 million and unload cheaper contracts,but Turner still had to pay the main eventers for the life of the contract instead of getting 80 million and allowing Fusion to assume all the contracts and have 5 hours of TV time,that they could still generate ad revenue from. This kind of decision should almost classify as criminal. How do people like that make a buck in the world? The funny part is that they are now paying a million a week to air another wrestling show now with AEW.
@@lodi70005 Ted Turner admitted that he sold too much percentage of stocks or shares. I wish AEW had a better product. Tony should allow Arn or even Tully to do the booking. Before the WWE boys came over, including Hogan, we all took pay cuts stating the ratings and the gates were down. About a few months later, big guaranteed contracts with extra perks were being signed. That was a huge discrepancy and what wind was left in the sail was now gone. Eric did some wonderful things but he made a couple critical mistakes. Remember he went from 3rd string announcer to VP or Booker. I remember when Eric joined us, Terry Taylor inquired, "who is the guy with the perfect hair? I laughed so hard and told him Eric and he is from AWA. When Chip lost his job he went to become a stock investor or broker. We kept in touch afterward talking wrestling and SEC football.
@@diamondwchamp What I never understood is how a few WWF guys come over & then Eric takes over & all of a sudden the majority of the WCW locker room allowed them to get over over all of them. No pushback or anything. Was it as simple as taking the money & letting WCW going to hell - or did any of them ever try to unite & fight back? They love to shoot about it today but it seems they were happy to make a deal with the devil.
Was waiting for Jim to say when he was traveling to Japan in the mid 80s. That he managed all over the world 400 days a year. Haha

It always sounds like promoters were taking advantage of wrestlers throughout history. And wrestlers are either too stupid to realize it or just take the job because they just needed a gig and wanted the work. And it's still the same to this day.
Not just wrestlers either. If you've met an employee, you've met someone getting taken for a ride

@@markl5998 Yeah, he'd been a wrestler in Britain in the 50s. Back then, maybe even more than in most of the US, pretty much everyone in British wrestling was dangerous with real shooting ability. With his size and a bit of training, it's no wonder he became so intimidating.
@@XKenny77 It 's why wrestling over here in the UK looked so real, because everyone was legit training in catch-as-catch-can or cornish wrestling or some other legit style, and it could go from work to shoot in a blink, if need be.
@@thelastmotel Yeah, it's easily forgotten that people like MMA stars like Josh Barnett, Kazushi Sakuraba, Minoru Suzuki, Masakatsu Funaki and many more were all trained by Wigan-trained pro wrestlers like Billy Robinson and Karl Gotch, and all considered themselves pro wrestlers throughout their MMA careers. Those trainers were, by all accounts, legitimate badasses who would have likely been amongst the best actual _fighters_ in the world at that time.

With cash payouts, I wonder if there was any shady business done by other wrestlers broke into lockers, bags, etc. Money always cause people to do things that they wouldn’t normal do. I’m sure some people weren’t smart in securing their pay outs.
I believe there were rituals for it. You hand a guy you would suspect of stealing your money your wallet, ask him to watch your cash while you're in the ring infront of EVERYBODY. if you come back and it's gone, you know.
I'm sure of that, pro wrestling was a shady environnement especially during the last century
Some dark stuff still happen to this days (Speaking Out is a big example) but comparing the two, wrestlers in the territory would make someone like Joey Ryan an innoncent child, that's saying

I was watching Young Rock where Rocky Johnson only got $300 at an event where the attendance was only ten and Rocky got upset so he spoke to a promoter and asked why he got only $300 the promoter said that was for 3 matches and not one match. So my point is that is the way it was in the day.

There was an NBC Correspondent named Jack Perkins who proved that it truly pays to understand perfectly what someone means by "junk." When he negotiated a move across America he just simply mentioned that all he cared for was to have "(my) family and (my) junk" moved across America free of charge. "Working a week in hand" as we call it in the UK, is common practice for jobs that pay weekly. You work week 1, then you work week 2, and at the end of week 2, you get the money you're owed from week 1, and so on, so that when you quit/leave/whatever, you still have a week's money owing, which you'll get the week after you stop working the job.
Frank Tunney in Toronto paid cash, and in the early 60s, he'd pay in Canadian which was worth $1.02 to $1.05 US then. If the worker requested US$, he'd pull some out and all would be good. Can't do that now by law up here -- which, given the current exchange rate would be ruinous, anyway.

I recall Gary Hart once saying that when Ric Flair was NWA World Champion in a Seven Day Period working for World Class, Flair made 30k and in the Early Eighties that was a lot of Money.
I mean shit, 30k in 7 days would still be a-ok today for an industry that was still niche. Nice. Though, god bless 'em, those guys sure did work their asses off and their bodies to the limits.

I remember (84'or 85')seeing Ole Anderson being escorted by Saginaw police officers to the front ticket office prior to a GCW house show. Once he got there us fans could view him thru the alternate ticket window located inside the lobby. At first, Ole was leaning on the doorway of the ticket manager's office and talking with the staff for a few minutes; having a few laughs. Then here comes the senior ticket cashier with a big fat brick of cash and handed it over to Ole. We all are like "H😳LY $HIT!" JYD was on cocaine, I later heard. Overweight and only getting around 12 hours of sleep- A WEEK!
I heard that the young upstart rookie wrestlers could earn about $ 70K the first year; and we're talking about 1987. Today it's about $140K plus perks.

In this age of digital banking state surveillance tyranny, I do my bit in keeping the cash economy alive. Although I do concede it's not conducive to fiscal responsibility. Once a cowboy, always a cowboy. Lonely are the brave. Il Grande Silenzio.
I know a man who works at a scrap metal yard and sometimes itinerant shop / building refitter. Keep your eyes open in that line of work and the tenet 'where there's muck there's brass' will serve you well. I've known him on occasion be at least partly paid in some barter-able commodity - hawking packets of duty free tobacco out of a carrier bag during a meandering Friday night return commute. I don't know how wealthy / not he might be but I do know this: he certainly ain't starving.
I use cash when making modest purchases from local businesses. Then they don't have to eat card processing fees.
Meanwhile others get roch with destroying the worth of your money with nfts, bitcoin and other shite also. Buy food cans. :-D

I find it so amusing how Jim differed to use a word other than 'explain', like 'extrapolate'. And even though he didn't use the word, the 'L' from 'explain' still managed to rear it's ugly head in the form of a stumble upon speech, or a stutter, if you will. As the 'r' from 'extrapolate' once again tried to replace the 'L' from 'explain'. Except this time, Jim's thoughts weren't on the word 'explain', nor were his thoughts on the replacement of the word. Instead, however, Jim was intending to say the word 'glad', when suddenly he went ahead and said the word 'grad', a word never once heard uttered ever before.
I think I've exprained enough, or should I say, extlapolated.
