- Today we take a look at every character from the Cult classic Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

Bowser is always fun when he reluctantly teams up with Mario.
the bowser of bowser inside story is my favorite depiction of bowser by far, so I 100% agree
I feel like you'd have a lot of fun sorting out the DnD alignments of every character from Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. Mostly because I'd love to watch you try to not laugh while explaining the pure absurdity in some scenes
I keep forgetting there are Metal Gear games unintentionally funnier than MGS3 and 4.
I settle for Raiden and all the bosses alignment.
Going by order of appearance:
Jet stream
Sun down
Blade wolf
Mistral
Monsoon
And that guy who plays American football.
Gonna guess blade wolf is true neutral borderline lawful good.
Because he is a good boi, except when he doesn't like it.

I find bowser's motivation in this to be interesting... if no dreams can come true that means his as well, which means no abducting the princess and no taking over the mushroom kingdom.
Some say a dream is a wish your heart makes.
I like to think the fact Bowser and Mario get buddy buddy in this game is why we see them casually having fun in sports, racing, and party games
After that game the abducting Is just a charade they keep up
I can't wait for you to one day explore Bowser's character in the Mario and Luigi Series and Paper Bowser. I feel like RPG Bowser was the introduction to Bowser's tough guy personality where he should be taken seriously as a threat. But at the end of the day he's just a goofball with a lot of power and not a lot of brains. He tries to be evil and at times succeeds but at the end of the day he's more akin to someone who tries to be evil but isn't.
But I should make it clear. Bowser does do quite a few things in those two game series that does still make him a threat and he can be unapologetically mean or even cruel at times. Just because he isn't evil by nature doesn't mean he isn't a bully who will do a ton of mean things to get what he wants. I just can't see Bowser as truly evil even in the main series games. Not with how he's been presented over the last two decades or so.
I think what is interesting is that I think this game laid the foundation for bowser's personality. Bowser prior tended to be more of a blanket villain previously that served as an obstacle for game clears. Unless my history is mistaken. This was the first game to actually delve towards bowser and the lore of the koopa troops. We get glimpses of bowser being this sort of hotheaded tough guy that is willing to stir up trouble if it means getting a crack at mario. However, he does show that he isn't heartless and is willing to set his goals aside for those he cares about. While he is a monarch he is shown to be a pretty nice leader all around and is even merciful, understanding, and even compassionate so long as you don't directly screw him over.
While not really seen much in n64 titles. It really shows up gamecube and up with mario sunshine, especially when he confesses to Jr. about the truth with peach and does look and sound regretful of lying to his son.
We keep seeing these traits more fleshed out for bowser and it honestly aligns with how bowser was in super mario rpg. It's kinda cool to see how much this game influenced bowser's character direction thinking about it.
I adore the Monstro Town shop scene with Bowser and the Goombas. Like, it was legitimately touching, despite lasting all of one minute.
Funny thing is that Mallow was actually MVP in the Axem Rangers fight during my "no items no equipment" run of the game. Mallow was able to easily MP stall the buster cannon, allowing him to pretty easily punch the cannon to death afterwords...
A lot of the later game bosses came down to MP stalling actually. I did something similar for Exor after I found out it was bugged to burn MP while silenced, rendering it mostly harmless (didn't feel like doing the instagib cheese).
I’d actually be interested to see what he would do with an alignment videos of the characters in the original paper Mario trilogy.
Count Blek remains the only nihilistic villain I’ve ever come across that I felt sorry for.
Every other nihilistic villain I ever seen games I just wanna punch.
I would legitimately love to see you go over characters from Star Ocean: 'Til the End of Time, mostly because Bowser in Super Mario RPG really reminds me of Albel from that game.

The TOME soundtrack being used for this video actually makes a lot of sense, as Kirbopher (the creator of TOME) was the guy who made the Rawest Forest music video back in the day.

Who wore it better Mario or peach?
I'd have to really dig through one game review magazines... but I remember reading as a teen that Booster was supposed to be Wario, but Nintendo said no to giving Wario the motivation of marrying Peach, so Square created their OC Booster and really leaned into the character's insanity.
Still interesting to think about if Wario was in Mario RPG...
I've been looking forward to this. This was the first RPG I ever played. I know that because I couldn't read yet. When my dad refused to do it for me, I just memorized what I had to do through trial and error. I couldn't get past the first Croco fight and eventually gave up due to frustration. Then a few years later I tried again and discovered the pick-me-up item. I felt like a complete idiot and spent days kicking myself. Guess being a kid makes it hard to recognize such things as a learning experience.
funfact geno is sent from the observetory by the star princess Rosaleina. geno is the luma that helped mario in mario galaxy one and two.
regarding the whole localization issue surrounding Princess Peach / Princess Toadstool, I like to say that Peach is her first name and Toadstool is her Family name. Kinda like how Mario's full name is Mario Mario (yes really)
I actually think they do a lot to establish bowsers character here that makes me think he was never really evil per se but that he would do evil things for a good outcome, it really makes me think.
Nice use of the TOME RPG OST btw, it really blends into this video very nicely!
Don't forget only paper Mario stays his hand from striking down a poor kid goomba.
Mainstream Mario and Mario RPG was slaughter that kid and his village unless dialogue says otherwise.
Coming from the great deity miyamoto there is no original characters if you see a koopa or goomba you kill it.
There is literally an entire town of monsters in this game that Mario definitely does not wage genocide on. XD
He does have to be restrained from decking Gaz after the kid disses him, though.

I'm convinced that the toad that shows up to be your last minute shop before Smithy is the same toad from the beginning of the game, and that the toad that finds Mario in the Super Mario Bros. animated movie is this toad.

Yo, your using TOME RPG soundtrack! It's a really good game and I wish it got more recognition. Also, some of the charatcers could make for a really good alignment for how dymanic the cast felt.

It makes more sense for Princess Toadstool to be her canon name given she is the leader of the Mushroom Kingdom. Or is this a case of her full name being Peach Toadstool like Bowsers is Bowser Koopa?

This is one of those times I lament not growing up with any Nintendo stuff during the very late 90s to early 2000s.
As a PS1/PS2 kid, I definitely had a blast with Spyro, Ratchet & Clank, and Sly Cooper... Don't get me wrong... But I do envy those that grew up with games like Super Mario RPG, or consoles like the Gamecube (I'll play Windwaker one of these days) or N64.
You know if you're covering Mario RPG, are there any plans to cover the other Mario RPGs like Paper Mario and the like?

You actually can fight Booster, he has an optional boss fight, if you fail the curtain minigame three times, but it doesn't change much storywise

doing this for fun but here is what i think the cast classes (FF classes then dnd base classes)
mario = dragoon (he jumps) / fighter
mallow = red mage? (has heals and damage) wouldn't argue if someone said "green mage" tho / bard
bowser = berserker / barbarian
geno = black mage / sorcerer
peach = white mage / cleric

Super Mario RPG was only released in the US and Japan, so it didn't have as much influence on the world's opinions of RPGs as you might've thought.

One breakdown I’d love to see is Bowser from Mario and Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story. And SPECIFICALLY that game.
It’s one of the only times where not only does Bowser gets to be A protagonist, and he does it as THE protagonist. Is Bowser really evil, or a misunderstood Dragon Turtle? I’d love to see your final thoughts, because the story kind of lets Bowser have a spectrum for his actions…even if, at the end of the day, it’s still good ole Bowser.
