I had the "Primus Sucks" sticker on my car in the 90's. One day in a lot, a guy told me I should take it off my car becasue he had heard them and thought they were pretty good. I laughed and just said "Yeah, Primus SUCKS!" He looked very confused. Love the John the Fisherman intro. They were a great live band, I did a huge radio station sponsored show in Utah with them and Buckethead was with them for a few songs. Some of the most original stuff to come out of the 90s.
Grew up on Primus, got the chills listening to you talk about all of it the whole time! love it! Was A HUGE and still am, Primus fan, SO much tension is there music... Ler's approach to guitar is untouchable, you could say he perhaps 'made' his playing into a style or genre, atleast in my eyes and in my world. Lots of clashing textures, very ominous note and chords choices....minor 2ns and m6's, b5's, augmented, diminished, you name it the legend Ler has in some way utilized it into his playing in the mix. The second I heard you play the main riff to JTF I started mildly headbanging haha, GREAT EPISODE! BTW!.....You have a Claypool kind of look and vibe to yuh! Could easily be mistaken as his twin!
You should also acknowledge the original Primus guitarist Todd Huth. The guitar parts in "John the Fisherman", like many other early Primus songs, were written by Todd, not Larry. You can hear him play it on the Sausage demo: ua-cam.com/video/vZyLCq6vY9g/v-deo.html
I had never heard of Primus until I saw them live on the Sailing the Seas of Cheese album at a small hole it the wall club in FLA back in the day and was completely blown away! Been a fan ever since. Thank for giving Ler some love man. Keep up the great content brother!
Thanks Dave! Loved the episode! If you want to get into some weird chords check out Ween! Plenty of weirdness and straight forward rock. Seen Primus numerous times and always a great show. I've always appreciated how Ler's parts seem to accent the wildness of Les's bass lines. Thanks again Dave!
Nice video! I love Ler! One of my favorite solos is from the live in the studio version of Frizzle Fry! It's very Larry and I love him for what he does
When I was like a 7th grader I had a subscription to Thrasher skate magazine and I remember seeing the ad for Tales From The Punchbowl , and it said “If you didn’t like Primus before…….. You probably still won’t !!!!!! And I was like 🤔 then I got it ….. 😂
Talking of guitarists that don’t play the usual licks and have a unique voice, how about a dedicated video on Adrian Belew, I know you’ve mentioned him in other videos but I’d love a breakdown of some of the weird solo structures he uses.
Saw them on the Sailing a sea of cheese tour at the Berkeley Community theater epic show there was an interview with Lar there was a Primus song playing in the background and he joking said what the heck do I play to this ! There cover of the Fairwell to kings Rush tour was the stuff legends are made of 🤘
Larry is amazing in his own right, but Todd Huth was the one who wrote most of the songs that you’ve gone through. You can find his channel on UA-cam and he actually gives the lessons on how he played (and wrote) most of these licks.
Lsst time I saw primus wa New Years couple years back. I'm too old for the Pit... Lame. Ended up in ER with my knee destroyed. Watched last half of concert on crutches. At least I got to see the rest of the show.
Seems like everybody was getting lessons from Sattriani back then. Right around the corner from my house was Sherwood Forest where the singer for my best friends band was Kirt Hammitts next door neighbor. I remember being in awe as a high school kid. Anyway, Sattriani taught Hammitt would tought my friend how to play guitar. Of course he sucked TOO. He was a great singer though. Bet nobody ever heard of them. They were called Tungston. (The heaviest densest metal).
Sure would love to get a digital copy of the original Blind Illusion cassette tape demo ... way better than the album they released. So very heavy and ahead of its time. Jeff from Possessed sang backup growl vocals along with Mark from Illusion as lead singing more like Hetfield. Memories of the 80's El Sobrante Bay Area Metal Scene. (My hometown). These guy's used to play in my hood growing up. Many of my buddies were in Metal bands playing with Primus, Metallica ect. I remember the the first time I heard Primus. Pretty incredible. Never figured they would end up making South Park music. Lot of epic songs. John the Fisherman and Jerry was a race car driver were my favorites in High School. I just can't emphasize how much PRIMUS SUCKS 🙄 LSD & Shrooms probly had quite a bit to do with my love affair. Primus and Pink Floyd were my goto must have albums when trippin balls. Frizzle Fried myself ... whoopz 😛 Bunch of my friends were Primus groupies. That wasn't my scene. I did score some KGB from Larry back when we were all still kids and always remembered that...silly really. Thanks Larry 😍
I've been watching Larry since summer '84 with Possessed....He sucks!!! 😆 BLIND ILLUSION STILL LIVES with Mark Biedermann along with Doug Piercy from Heathen who, also started Anvil Chorus

Finally, Larry getting some love instead of the madman on lead bass 😂😂😂
Lalonde is underrated.
Thanks GOD! Otherwise you couldn't say that ...
Larry's work has been in my head for 35 years. Time has flies. Pretty cool lesson. Very cool
Keep up the good work man. I dig the format of all your videos

Ler is awesome, Primus is awesome and you are awesome for showing the sophistication of Primus’ music.
That Tele sounds so good here! Thanks for this David - saw Primus a year ago on the Kings tribute tour - they were great.

Nothing beats the Telecaster
Great Lesson, David!!!! Harsh Larry!!!!
In tribute to this fine channel, I shall only refer to a tritone as you do at 12:08 I salute you, good sir.🫡
That intro made me smile :D
Name that tune you say? "When I grow up I want to be one of the harvesters of the sea. I think, before my days are done, I want to be a fisherman."
Even though it's not on the albums I was hoping you'd mention the south park theme song
Good stuff!

Woo hoo I've been waiting for this one. You're doing God's work my friend 😂😂. Can't wait to check this lesson out.
I was at Tower Records in Tempe Arizona in 80s and they played a video of them live in California. I was going "WTF is this??".

At 8:30 David slips Devo into a Primus video. Well played, sir.
Keep it coming man, I know you'll pull ramjam out of your hat.

Ler is great. Totally uncopyable. Groove master, which makes all the dissonance work anyway.....Sneaking up on 100K SUBS too :) Noice!

Fun Fact: Too Many Puppies is not about puppies. It is an anti war song.
David - I don't see you on Patreon any more. Have you ended that?

Your title is correct primus does suck sounds like a bunch of noise mixed together.....no flow just a mix of garbled noise
Nope.
