There's a misconception that you need to be on drugs to listen to and create music. It's a myth! Primus didn't do drugs. They liked beer/wine and some cannibus. But they(Les & Ler) said that recreational use was not directly involved in their music writing. Of course their was an indirect effect, but any experience we have will have indirect effects on our personalities. Saying musicians are on drugs to make music is an ignorant lie/rumor. I'm a musician. Rule #1 when it comes to recording or playing live music is DON'T SHOW UP STONED! Maybe the Ramones were stoned when they played, but any real musician won't be. The Ramones were bad musicians and songwriters. So yeah, maybe they were stoned all the time. That would explain it, but Hendrixes band, "the Experience", said that it was totally untrue that he played while stoned or tripping. It would be impossible to play at such a high(no pun) level. The rumor about Hendrix came from ignorant fools. Sure he like drugs in his recreational personal life, but he was sober in recordings and live shows according to his bandmates. Oh. Here's a great song to look up. The title of the song is called 'Rumors.' I forget the artists name. (And no, it's just a SONG title, not an album title by the same name. If u come across fleetwood Mac in ur search, don't listen. They were definitely on drugs, that's why they sucked. Just type song from 80's called Rumors

You can't say which is the best bass player ever. Simply because you can play bass or any other instrument in thousands way. That said Les Calypool is for sure one of the best expression of bass history. And for sure he created an original way to play the bass. He enriched the bass world, helping to enhance this music role that too many times was underestimated.
Well, I remember as it were a meal ago Said Tommy the Cat as he reeled back to clear whatever foreign matter May have nestled its way into his mighty throat Many a fat alley rat had met its demise while staring point blank down The cavernous barrel of this awesome prowling machine Truly a wonder of nature this urban predator Tommy the Cat had many a story to tell But it was a rare occasion such as this that he did She came slidin' down the alleyway like butter drippin' off a hot biscuit The aroma, the mean scent, was enough to arouse suspicion in even the Oldest of tigers that hung around the hot spot in those days The sight was beyond belief Many a head snapped for double--even triple--takes as this vivacious Feline made her her way into the delta of the alleyway where the most Virile of the young tabbies were known to hang out They hung in droves Such a multitude of masculinity could only be found in one place And that was O'Malley's Alley The air was thick with cat calls (no pun intended) But not even a muscle in her neck did twitch as she sauntered up into The heart of the alleyway She knew what she wanted She was lookin' for that stud bull She was looking for that he cat And that was me Tommy the Cat is my name and I say unto thee Say, baby, do you want to lay down with me? Say, baby, do you want to lay down by my side? Ah, baby, do you want to lay down with me? Say, baby? Say, baby? Finally I can understand what the fuck he's saying

I’ve been a Primus fan since day one. What I’ve always loved about them is that the guitar, bass and drums are always in the front, together. You don’t get that kind of in your face music much. I actually got to meet Herb when he was sitting in on drums for his girlfriend’s band because her drummer had broken his arm. It was on the wharf in San Francisco at a Summer Solstice festival where there were like probably 100 bands playing. I was behind the stage (not backstage) where he was playing and immediately recognized him. I yelled out “Primus sucks!” (their catchphrase at the time). He turned around and gave me a thumbs up. After their set, we had a couple of beers together and he signed a drumstick for me that said “Sal sucks!” Tim “Herb” Alexander. I cherish that stick and will never forget that day, over twenty years ago.

These bands have nothing to do with Primus. Primus invented a genre that will die with them because nobody is able to duplicate
No, All of these bands have a different sound completely
@@battoreddu9303 I didn't say those bands sound like Primus (they don't sound alike at all), I said they wouldn't sound the same if Primus never existed because they were so influential.
@@MarioMario-my5ib Korn has definitely been influenced by Primus.
@@aoibhin9745 To a baby who doesn't understand music, sure. Korn is funky as hell and the Primus influence is obvious.

That bass part in drugs
Drugs make the best music ex:( janis , jimmy etc.)
@@flaccidego9468 There is NO F*cking question as to whether or not you are on drugs and or crazy. This is the first comment I have ever read that literally made me FALL OVER, not laughing but in amazement of whatever the f*ck that was you wrote. Thanks for the laughs.......Wrong, wrong and WRONG.
Pure 90's juice with one of the most powerful bass lines ever made
Just discovering Primus at 30 years old, and I FREAKING love them! So much talent...
I’m just discovering them at 16 ! Quickly becoming one of my favorite bands
You were born about 10 years too late to catch them when they were actually popular on the radio and MTV (I'm 38). The video for Mr Krinkle scared the shit out of 12 year old me, but it had a lasting impression that made me love the band ever since. Pork Soda was among the first few CDs I owned
Tony Mancini I know:( at least I can see all their vids on UA-cam and I’m hopefully going to attend their concert in Florida over the summer
Bruh I discovered them at 7 years old in 2016. They're. Legendary.
Oh, so we're doing this. I discovered Primus when my mother and father decided to have a baby.
I love how tight and funky this song is, it's so cool
If there was ever proof of alien life visiting earth, Les Claypool is it.
3:05 Absolutely incredible
You can't say which is the best bass player ever. Simply because you can play bass or any other instrument in thousands way. That said Les Calypool is for sure one of the best expression of bass history. And for sure he created an original way to play the bass. He enriched the bass world, helping to enhance this music role that too many times was underestimated.
Paul McCartney “I’m just a bass player”
Claypool “hold my G string”

@Lelo Stimulous his early stuff was better

Well, I remember as it were a meal ago
Said Tommy the Cat as he reeled back to clear whatever foreign matter
May have nestled its way into his mighty throat
Many a fat alley rat had met its demise while staring point blank down
The cavernous barrel of this awesome prowling machine
Truly a wonder of nature this urban predator
Tommy the Cat had many a story to tell
But it was a rare occasion such as this that he did
She came slidin' down the alleyway like butter drippin' off a hot biscuit
The aroma, the mean scent, was enough to arouse suspicion in even the
Oldest of tigers that hung around the hot spot in those days
The sight was beyond belief
Many a head snapped for double--even triple--takes as this vivacious
Feline made her her way into the delta of the alleyway where the most
Virile of the young tabbies were known to hang out
They hung in droves
Such a multitude of masculinity could only be found in one place
And that was O'Malley's Alley
The air was thick with cat calls (no pun intended)
But not even a muscle in her neck did twitch as she sauntered up into
The heart of the alleyway
She knew what she wanted
She was lookin' for that stud bull
She was looking for that he cat
And that was me
Tommy the Cat is my name and I say unto thee
Say, baby, do you want to lay down with me?
Say, baby, do you want to lay down by my side?
Ah, baby, do you want to lay down with me?
Say, baby?
Say, baby?
Finally I can understand what the fuck he's saying
Unreal
Thank you for this!

The more I listen to this band the more addicted I become. This band, along with Tool, is like a drug to listen to. I love these guys so much
I very much connect the two, fortunately, so does Spotify 😆
@@robertmartin902 They have worked together on loads of things since the very start. Primus, Tool and RATM all came out of the same block and club scene in LA.
Pantera, Coal Chamber, Sound Garden, Nirvana, Cake are also good.

I love when Les does his little circle stomp while he plays. Watched him do it live in Berkeley a couple years ago. 😄
Awesome! Damn man, Larry LaLonde was defiantly a hugely underrated guitarist, and that bass.... You usually don't get a guitarist and a bass player capable of out shining each other

I just noticed that Les is wearing fake arms when he is doing the bar tending scenes.
where do you buy your weed?
@@cbly he does!
I dont think its his arms that are fake. i can only spot that the ends of his fingers are extended in those scenes
EDIT: I'm usually jamming out by the time 3:18 gets here, but he obviously has fake arms at that part. Pretty sure that earlier in the video its his normal arms.
If you’re not convinced, just look at the very last scene where you see his silhouette in the moon: those arms are WAYYY too long to be real.
At 2:30 you can see that they are fake. Sometimes he has both hands faked, sometimes only one hand and sometimes he has his real hands.. 😅
After all these years, it still blows my face off.
I dated a girl for about a month. She said "put on something sexy" one night before we got in bed, so I put on Tommy the Cat. She said "this is the worst thing I've ever heard in my life, what is this?". I said "It's Primus, they suck". She said "they really do!" so I cranked it up and she left. Really dodged the bullet on that one.

Double Pleasure every time I listen to and watch this epic piece of music . On the one hand the unbelievably musical perfection and on the other hand the sense of humor and the performance. Great video ! Great song! I ❤ Primus !
I'm not a musician but this guy to be absolutely a genius. Right?
Primus sucks.
+SirPhartsUhlot Yes, we worship him as king of Bass.
+SirPhartsUhlot yup, he definitely is ^^ besides the fact that he can play very difficult he is experimental and that is what (in my opinion) makes a real genius
He is indeed. As a bassist, I consider him second to none in terms of innovation and creativity.
+SirPhartsUhlot Primus sucks.
My son listened to y’all a long time back and really appreciated your music. He said mom just listen to them so years later I finally listened. Closed my eyes and listened and throughly enjoyed the music. Gentlemen amazing skills at work here! When listen to the music a heartbroken state takes you one place while a day of pinning away leds you another... When the children were young I purposely exposed them to variety of music now it looks like he is teaching me. Too much talent here too let it go away without an intense fight. Open up to a larger audience that will love you and the music. Why not open minds and hearts to the people ‘ Doing it my Way’ won’t be so important. After all is not the purpose of music to minister to people? the more the better! Hopefully I have not offended. Thank y’all for listening.
Since 84, and still rocking. Long live Primus

Been into these guys for about 30yrs they truly are one of a kind. Les can spot a good bassline from over 100 miles away.
I wish Tom Waits and Les Claypool did more music together, this is just too fucking dope
Theres a track on tom waits 'mule variations' album called big in japan that features primus. also tom waits plays toy piano on the primus track sathington Willoughby, and he is also on the primus track coattails of a deadman. You probably already know them but thought I'd mention just in case.

Les Claypool and Frank Zappa playing together would have been neat
You know this.
Yeah, the whole band is clearly highly influenced by Zappa. Probably the main influence, hence the novelty singing, lyrics, and music videos.
Christian Gasior Actually, Les has said his biggest influence is The Residents. Not saying Zappa isn't an influence, just not the main one, supposedly.
Also, I always kind of thought "Captain Claypool" was a nod to "Captain Beefhart".
Kind of like doing acid and mushrooms at the same time !
Les Claypool, Flea, Geddy Lee, John Entwistle and Billy Gould are my bass heroes.
Hey, those are my heroes too..... You didn't mention one of my heroes though..... Cliff Burton... And you Les Claypool is on the same level as Mike Patton when it comes to vocalist too.
Who would win in a bass battle?
OMG Mike Patton and Les Claypool need to form a band... maybe with Omar from the Mars Volta on guitar. But who could drum for that eclectic group??
Dexenation Gracey You forgot Marcus Miller
Brian Cherry Mike Patton on vocals+Les Claypool on bass+Page Hamilton and Tom Morello on guitars+Dave Grohl on drums and we got the absolute nineties band!
the genius of Primus is they have never given a flying f**k if anyone likes there music or not

Primus: Hold my milk

Tool: Hold my bit of meat with a rusty nail in it crawling along a plank.
Absurdist and brilliant, the two defining adjectives for Primus.
In terms of high quality music videos, Primus are one of the best bands in 90s, not musically tho. Professionally great but artistically, spiritually, emotionally and rhythmically regular.
Nah, they’re greats.
Primus and Tool, maybe System of a Down were the only ones pushing the envelope
@@sperckensiedoitch Primus are better musically, but Tool & SOAD have better song and better vocals. Also their songs(not music) are more melodic than Primus. Even tho I don't put Primus in a same category with SOAD & Tool.

Oh my god this is such a boomer comment but I love it
How absolutely perfect is this song in and of itself?? Tom Waits and Les Claypool is the absolute most perfect collaboration you could ever hope for!
A trio of pure genious.
I remember seeing this once back in 91 when I was 10 years old, and being completely and totally gobsmacked and confused by it. It was nothing like the airy synth-pop/pop-rap that was still everywhere. I'd never seen it since until it was uploaded here on the UA-cams a while ago. One of those fuzzy memories that stayed with you as a kid.
the hi hat at 0:32 is awesome
I'm not sure which is harder: trying to play this song on bass, or trying to sing it.
Or both simultaneously
Singing like Tom Waits is physically impossible so I would say singing.
