Great comparison. I stg if Alex Lifeson was from the US instead of Canada he would be in the conversation with Eddie Van Halen and the rest of the 80s shredders. Lifeson has arguably more creative solos than EVH. No two are the same whereas you can tell right away when EVH is playing. All his solos pretty much sound the same but don’t get me wrong they defined the 80s double hand tapping sound

When Frizzle Fry came out my friends and I lost our minds. We got to see Primus for the first time at the Columbus Newport, opening for fishbone. What a show, what an era in music. My bass player Josh(RIP), instantly got deeply into Claypool, which meant I needed to adopt the same vibe. Ler was a huge inspiration on my playing in the early 90s in my band. And influenced a lot of the original music I wrote with Josh.

This makes me appreciate Primus even more. I always noticed how strange the guitar stuff was, as in it broke the conventions of guitar as a lead and instead made guitar the support of the bass...of course. But hearing it on its own I see just how crazy it all is. The bass is crazy, the vocals are crazy and the guitar is crazy....but it works!!!

Wow! This is simply amazing. Ler is one of my favorite guitar players and the most unique. And he seems to be the nicest guy in music industry. It's impossible not to love him.
In my opinion the best of him is in The Desaturating Seven. I love the classic albums don't get me wrong, but in this album Ler is playing at a different level.
So, basically this is my argument to request a part 2 of this lesson please

When Ler goes into that Black Floyd LP part and explains and plays the "Solo" parts, if you close your eyes you can hear Sonny Sharrock peaking out from behind him.

OMG I've never heard Ler talking before & he's hilarious. I'm so glad he did Groundhog Day, the only Primus song I attempted to play, long before YT existed.

    The best video on UA-cam!
I would love to see Gibson TV do a THE COLLECTION video on Ler.
    Those guitars are rad!

15:01 South Park theme with Flying V?!!! Helllll yeah! I recently got 2019 gibson flying v! I should try it! Les is legendary bassist but Ler always had great role in Primus. I can't imagine Primus without him.

It ain't really Primus without Larry LaLonde. As evidenced by Les' illustrious catalog of solo projects

    Just glad to see this.

It's pretty cool seeing Larry play that old possessed riff. I can hear where Chuck Schuldiner got his inspiration from. I was like wow okay that's where he got it from Haha

LOVE LER! He's always reminded me of a bizarro (this is a term of endearment) Bob Weir. Both play in such unique spaces around/complementing their lead band members, humbly. Also, what a fun/funny guy he is!
