Whatever brand truck you end up with make sure that you get a gear ratio that is designed for towing/plowing/ working.
The times I have owned a truck that didnt perform well was because I did not have low enough gears.
I am not brand loyal anymore. The big 3 all make great trucks and they all have their quirks in my opinion.

There aren't really any rear gear options anymore. GM runs the 10 speed Allison in all hd trucks. The gasser gets a 3.73 the diesel gets a 3.42. They get their gear reduction out of the transmission so they can run a lower rear gear.

The perfect truck does not exist. But the best would be a ford super duty f350 for cab room and solid front axle paired with a international harvestor dt360 or dt466 with a Allison automatic.

I own a lawn service. I had a Ford 2002 f250. Good truck, but the transmission let go at 80,000 miles. I bought a Ram 3500. Right from the start I had trans problems. It was a straight drive. The sensors would get out of sync, and it would not start. It would also shut down when sifting gears. They admitted it was a known problem and bought it back. I had twoChevyy 2500s with the Duramax diesel. Put about 130,000 on both, not a problem one. Bought a 16 Ford F350 single rear wheel. It was in the shop 10 times in 8 months. Traded on a 17 Chevy 2500 with the Duramax. It currently has 122, 000 miles, no problems. I also have 18 Ram 2500 with the Cummins. No major problems. It is just so uncomfortable. For me, I haven't had a single problem with the Duramax diesel engine in the GM trucks. The GM truck as a whole has been a great product for me. And they will pull a mountain down while getting 14 MPGs. It carries a 9 ft boss V plow very well.

The reason why you were having that one second lag in your shifting from forward to reverse is because it is electronically operated shift control in your automatic transmission to keep you from tearing it up from slamming it into drive and then back into reverse time and time again

question for ya - sorry if it's naive - can someone without construction experience get into o/o dumptruck and get by on hotshot work, or possibly find a contract gig? im getting my CDL in 2 months and looking into options for how to put it to work. Would prefer not to OTR big rigs but I could pick up a dumptruck locally for a lot less than I could a hotshot truck or Freightliner. I'd consider mid-size (5500, f550) or a used Kenworth heavy duty. Curious what you think given your setup and experience, thanks in advance.

Hi and good question! There are guys that I know that only haul. For starters, wherever the state is building roads, they almost always need to hire independent contractors with twin axles to haul in or out. If you end up with a smaller dump, like mine - a 550/5500, then the state jobs probably won't need you. However, trucks this size are great for hauling construction materials, landscaping materials, demolition materials, trash, etc. Also, with a plow and salt spreader they are great for winter work. Working for yourself can always be hard until your name gets around. Here in the mountains of western North Carolina, there are lots of people with private roads or driveways that need crushed stone maintenance. So, if you get good at being able to drop as you are moving, then there is a fair amount of putting down a thin layer over a worn drive. Then, if you get a stout trailer, you can deliver excavators or skid loafers or other equipment for people along with more kinds of construction materials. I have never looked seriously at the hot-shot work, so I can not answer to that. Let me know if you have any other questions - always happy to help.

    5 Year for Ford

    Some electrical problems
    A few Radio problems
But it all comes down to having a good relationship with the service department of your dealership. But that is not always true. You are absolutely 100% correct! IMHO from working in the Golf Course Construction Industry since the age 15 now running the family business at 56 the only reason we now standardized our trucks to GMC/Chevy is 100% due to Mechanics, Parts Availability and General Service from our Dealership and we have ran all 3 major brands and Ford was the absolute worst in all three categories listed above period. We have also found that Dealerships will vary from State to State and the GMC/Chevy were still the most available here in the Mid West. Now further South we ventured for projects we noticed the two leading dealerships were Toyota and Dodge/Ram. It’s similar to the Caterpillar Equipment Network compared to Volvo or Doosen.

Dodge 3500 with the 5.9 and a 6 speed manual. My mentor and I put that truck to work every week day hauling a skid loader (sometimes with a rock screen too), plowing, running to the parts stores (parts for the jobs, not the truck), and running to jobs. In the 3 years I drove that truck, before my boss past away, the only thing I did to that truck was an oil change every 5k or 6 months. That truck would work, and work, and keep working, it was amazing.

The newer Duramax engines seem to have a lot of injector problems, MAF sensor problems, and there's starting to be more cases where a dowel pin on the crank snaps off and stops spinning the oil pump which wrecks the whole engine. Their 10 speed transmission is also a cheaper built version of the Ford 10 speed. Ford is also having issues with the new HO 6.7 Powerstroke, but I'm not sure what the issues are. Ford and GM also still use the same CP4 high pressure fuel pump that's been problematic for years. I do know a guy that has to replace the def heater in his GMC about every 2 years. I do tend to lean more towards Ford lately, but if I was to buy a new diesel, it would be a Ram, but I would hold out for the 2025 model with the ZF 8 speed transmission. A lot of people would agree that it's the best transmission currently made. The only problem I know about with diesel Rams is a bolt that holds the grid heater can loosen up and get eaten by the engine. However, Banks has an intake horn and plate with a heater built in that eliminates the potential issue. And as far as a "treat yourself" interior goes, Ram has that one for 5 years now while the other two are still playing catch up. I know you don't like dealing with electronic and computer issues (I'm the same way) but all 3 have issues with that stuff. GM is probably the worst though just because of the way everything is integrated and software updates are done over the air with no warning

The transmission torque converter is always hesitant and you’re supposed to make a complete stop otherwise you will hurt it. I have a 2015 and I hate when my cruise control decides it’s turning its self off. I do not like the new emissions systems with anything 2017 or newer. But I know this will probably be my last f150 and I will go with a Toyota when it dies. The newer ford is not rated for plowing and not as much towing than it says due to the thinner frame. Beware of Chevy electric problems if you do get one. Do your homework every truck has its share of issues and take care of them before it happens. Like let’s say your ram has a plastic oil cooler like the jeeps have put a metal aftermarket one in. GMC or Chevys have cheap braided ground straps that disintegrate you should replace. Just go with Toyota because these manufacturers know their problems and don’t try to fix ‘em. Never buy 1st generation any vehicles and do your homework or you will pay for it later.

The gas 8.1 on the other hand sucks fuel like no one’s business but will haul whatever I throw in the trailer. 6-7 ton in a 2 ton dump trailer.

Sadly, everything new seems junk. It's also not just Ram, but all 3 big truck brands use DEF on their diesels. As a diesel tech, I highly recommend steering clear of a diesel unless you absolutely need the power. DEF needs to be topped off in addition to fuel, DEF will freeze in the winter, fuel will gel in the winter without being on top of additives. Not to mention the intakes and EGR coolers getting plugged up from all the EGR soot. EGR valves failing, constant regens from all the idle time (diesels hate idle), then add on the DPF and SCR system.....all a bunch of extra junk that shortens the life of your engine and costs you much more money in repairs, as well as purchase cost on already inflated trucks. If you want to try GM, I'd suggest trying their 6.6 gas engine.

But from experience, we(road commission in northern Michigan)have 6 2021 and newer Chevrolet 3500 and gmc 2500’s with 6.6 gas engines. They ALL burn oil in between oil changes, the good trucks are 1 quart and oil change, a majority are 2 plus quarts every oil change. Transmission failures in a couple trucks, gauge clusters, fuel sensing units, rear end clunks and bangs, transmission cooler lines. Seats wearing out fast. Non of these trucks have more than 25,000 miles on them. Even the die hard gm guys at work are saying there not impressed with the new trucks. So just something to think about. I do know that Truck King picked a new duramax up from gms Flint plant and a rental truck and it wouldn’t even start. How many GM trucks do you see running hot shot? I may have missed a couple but living near the port of virginia i see hot shots running all the time and its probably 50:1 ford/RAM to any duramax. And in the last couple years of the 50 its been leaning more towards RAM then Ford. That may or may not be because RAM is better but because Ford is just not as good at quality control or fixing failures. Which lets face it. If you own a vehicle its going to break down regardless of brand.

I’m having this discussion with myself as well. I love ram, but the MDS system is a no go for me. I have a 1500 outdoorsman that had lifter failure after 9k miles of ownership. (Bought used with 84k). I replaced the cam and lifters with a stock cam but not the MDS system back in. Runs well now, but I hate the thought of buying a truck knowing I’ll be spending 3k at some point to fix it and worrying about when it will happen. But, I guess the problem you know is better than the problems you don’t know. I had a 2004 gmc 2500 a few years ago, and had some electrical issues now and then. Considering GMC again, but I’m not sure. They all have problems of their own. With that being said, If buying a diesel the Cummins is the best choice although I’ve heard of a lot of transmission issues in the 22-23’s. My dad has a 2014 4500 and hauls his 35’ camper and gets 12mpg, used to be a car hauler truck. He replaced an older duramax with it. Great transmission, but they’re a foreign engine so it gets expensive when injectors go bad. He spent $8,500 on new injectors and injector pump. It’s a quarter of the cost to replace injectors on a Cummins. The 6.7 power stroke is good, but I’ve heard of high pressure pumps going out and that’s very costly as well.

  • @Dave-pd6hi

Anything is going to give you problems. I've owned 6 diesels and i finally got sick of all the issues. With the older ones, it was always electrical or something of that nature. The newer ones were fuel system related. I went to a big block gasser (06 gmc 8.1l) horrible gas mileage but far more reliable. And it will pull anything i need. I understand you pull more then i would but i personally dont think diesels are worth it unless you are doing long hauls, up mountains. Also, gas is better in the winter, and idle time isn't a problem like it is on a diesel.

I've had three RAMs, a Ford and a GMC over twenty-two years. The last two were RAMs because the other two were hawribul.
Sadly, I totaled my last 2020 RAM
Retired now and can't afford the current MSRP
Beware of '25 RAM designs. Great truck, but what is under the hood may be disappointing. Even the 5.7HEMI is gone

if you want a truck to not have nit picky issues get one with fewer options, all those fancy electronics is something to go wrong, I own a 2023 Silverado High Country 2500 and havent had a single problem with it.....but still, more features more potential problems
GM also has best riding HD trucks and are only ones to have auto 4WD
I would not buy a Ram HD truck......they look nice but feel cheap and way too many issues......I had a 21 Ram 1500 Laramie,

Totally lost credibility going from ford to ram in my opinion. Ford builds the best trucks. Do I think my 15 year old f150 is more reliable than a new f150? Yes. Do I I think my 06 explorer is better than new explorer? Yes. V8 all day
