Is LEGO Actually Overpriced or Just Expensive? | LEGO Ideas & LEGO Star Wars

  • One criticism that every LEGO set faces is that it is overpriced. But if every LEGO set is overpriced, then none of them would be. Often I feel people mix up over priced with expensive, especially with sets over $150. So what is the difference and what causes people to think this way. Let me know what your thoughts are in the comments and what set you believe is truely overpriced for what you get.

I think LEGO is generally overpriced. There’s no going around the fact that each of their licensed themes have to pass on that cost to the consumer, but recently there have been just too many instances of overpriced sets specifically in Star Wars. Grievous Starfighter is just a gross cash grab and sets like the night buzzard and AAT are just asking for a bit too much. I just wish there was consistency in the pricing. There’s no doubt that LEGO almost always deliver on quality but sometimes the prices they ask for are just a bit out there.

    • @Caleb-qb4dv
      @Caleb-qb4dv 4 роки тому +1

Star Wars has always been this expensive though. Something you need to take into consideration with older Star Wars sets is inflation, which really has affected the prices over time. Also, with a Disney license like Star Wars, it's going to generally have a higher quality to it, so it will be more expensive. Though I do agree, consistency is needed.

The issue is that the license series aso. drive up the price for completely unlicensed sets as well. Like the current creator castle has 3 minifigures and one skeleton for 100€. My magical number for minifigures is 42 - if I buy new, I have to spend literally 1000€ to get to that number. That’s insane because the set has no license or crazy parts.

  • @AHYL88

    Heyo new here.
I totally agree, there's some odd sets that are overpriced but they're mostly just simply expensive. I think one of the other things on top of the topic is that people can't really properly appreciate or gauge the cost or worth of sets without building them, especially the massive sets like the Disney Castle or the giant Millennium Falcon or the ultra complex Technic sets. They're definitely expensive for sure, but they're justified in their prices and having built stuff like the Porsche 911 GT3 RS and Disney Castle and so on, I can understand with even greater clarity why they cost a lot.
The amount of planning, testing, prototyping and providing clear instructions for these very large sets must have had a great factor added in to the costs of these sets; it makes you realise how very hard, time consuming and of course costly it is to go through with bringing massive sets to life.

john lemon not really when you look at the winter wave. For a few years lego used the same prices when it came to star wars each year then following “brexit” the prices were increased.
2014, 2015, 2016 winter waves followed a pattern in terms of prices.
If lego went up because of inflation prices would change every single year. This isnt the case for a lot of star wars.
2017 winter wave onwards the prices went up because of “brexit” and a similar pattern in prices have occured in following winter waves.
My perspective is from UK prices. Might be different for you. But thats reality for me.

I agree with your overall point and I've thought similar things myself, but there are definitely certain instances of overpricing. I find the price tags of the Disney sets especially difficult to swallow. I was excited for the Frozen II releases but the price to part ratio left me unable to justify anything except Elsa's jewelery box. I consider myself lucky I'm not a Star Wars fan because that markup is steep!

LEGO is definitely getting more expensive. Overpriced, well depends. I think most D2C sets are absolutely worth the price. Star Wars sets may be overpriced because many of the builds are just rehash of previous one. But i think the most important thing is just enjoy what you bought. IF you have a good time, then it's worth the money. To over come the high price tag, we all just have to work hard to increase our income.

Any time I think a set is "overpriced" it usually is based on how much money I'm willing to pay for it vs the pricing of LEGO. I do feel though that as newer pieces and building techniques are introduced, sets (especially ones that are remade from older lines) become more expensive than ones from the earlier 2000's. The only sets I would spend more than a hundred dollars on are the module LEGO Creative sets. It all boils down to personal preference. :)

It is just amazing!! I loved how detailed it is and how clever the construction is. My whole family enjoy "discovering" all the details so I got four more sets days after (oh my gosh, take care of my wallet!) My point it, it is very high quality!! I mostly go based on minifigures because they are a big deal to me when buying a set, so for every £10 I spend, I expect 1 minifigure. £100+ sets that only have like 3 or 4 minifigures don't really appeal to me. Thats why recent Star Wars waves have not interested me like the Grievous starfighter which only has 3 minifigs for £80 so I pass straight away on that one.

In Sweden we had a pretty significant raise of the price on sets from 2019 to 2020. A set that cost 99 SEK in 2019 now cost 139 SEK, but the inflation goal in Sweden is 2 % and the salaries goes up about 2 % per year.

Lego star wars New aat is overpriced because it has few minifigures and the main build isn't that big. However, 501st battle pack is good price, and not that expensive, because it has a good minifig count, 6, and the builds have good size. OK, in the battle pack the minifigs are all the same and in the att are half of them, 2, are exclusive but doesn't make the set more valueable than 501st BP.
You would think that imo duel in Mustafar is overpriced but actually I find that just as an expensive set, not an overpriced one because, at the time, it had exclusive minifigs, and a ton of playability

I think this is a quite subjective topic as long as to insides on the actual costs of the different factors you mentioned are available. And LEGO probably will never publish anything on that.
I think GBC balls are a good example for this topic. (These are the LEGO ball elements used in Great Ball Contraption.) A ball in quantity at LEGO B&P costs 0.62 €, while the same ball at Bricklink costs 2-4 €. At the same time, a nearly identical ball from other quality toy companies (e.g., Hubelino) cost only about 0.07 €. I think this illustrates well that a part of the LEGO prices are justified by the fandom around it and not only by the actual production and development costs. (Other companies that produce other products in comparable quality but without the fandom around it can do it for 12 % of the price. I'm not saying the difference would be that high for whole sets, but there will be a difference. At the same time third party LEGO sellers even charge 5 times as much as LEGO does itself. Probably because they can, because of the fandom.)

The story about the piano is not really like you tell it to be. The piano was an idea from someone else, and that someone already had a working piano with poweredUp, the model was complete. The only thing Lego did in my perspective is to make it work with powerfunctions to control it by smart device. And maybe figuring out to make the set with less bricks and or bricks that are cheaper or easier to make. My opinion of that set, Lego didn’t do that much to it, and I hope the original creator of that set gets a well fair deal out of the sales.
