  • This is how to setup a Zoom F1-SP to a camera. Just don't do it... But if you want to setup your Zoom F1 field recorder and connect it to your camera this is how. But for real. Don't do it. lol

    From Zoom's Video - • Zoom F1-SP: Connecting...
    "Hi everyone, this is John from Zoom, and I am here to show you how to set levels on the F1 when used with your DSLR camera.
    If levels are not set properly, this can result in distorted or noisy audio.
    The F1 can output a test tone (1kHz sine wave at -6dBFS) used as reference to adjust the level of a digital camera audio input.
    First, turn down the input gain on your camera. Disable automatic gain if enabled. Please refer to your camera’s operation manual for instructions.
    Connect the F1 output to your camera’s input using a 3.5mm stereo cable.
    While holding the STOP button, press the Record Format button. This will enable the test tone.
    Use the volume plus and minus buttons to adjust the F1 output level. While checking the audio level meter on your camera, adjust the F1 output level until the camera’s audio meter never exceeds -6dBFS, or until the F1 volume reaches 100.
    If the F1 volume is at 100 but the camera’s audio meter is below -6dBFS, increase your camera’s input level in small increments until it is at about -6dBFS.
    To stop the test tone, press the Record Format button while holding the STOP button.

    Mate you can still record on the Zoom F1 + DSLR simultaneously while connected. It’s even better ‘cause you can sync them perfectly using the “Sound Marker” feature of the Zoom F1. The sound recorded on your DSLR although having a bit of noise will massively improve compare to not connecting it with the Zoom F1. Cheers! 😊

      Kris Gironella I understand you can record simultaneously while connected. But there’s honestly no reason to have the same audio that’s recorded on the F1 be sent to and recorded on the dslr as well. That’s just my opinion. But thanks for watching and commenting. I guess it’s a difference of reasoning when it comes to this.

      Binh Dong You actually have a point if the Zoom F1 fails while connected. A crappy audio is better than none. Most of time it’s because of battery or a corrupted sd card. So far my Zoom H4N hasn’t failed me in 4 years of use. Just bought Zoom F1 hopefully it will serve me well. Aw Yeah! Cheers! 😊

      Kris Gironella have fun with the F1. It’s pretty amazing for what it is! And yeah, if the F1 does fail it’s going to be batteries or sd card most likely. Batteries will die when least expected. I guess for a “production” you would use fresh batteries. But a vlogger that does it daily or semi daily, probably not. Anyway, let me know what you think when you get yours!

    Hi Binh. I know I'm months late making a comment here, but I wanted to mention that you always have the option of connecting an external mic to your camera and be recording audio on the F1 mic to its micro SD card at the same time. That way you don't have to use the camera's internal mic at all. Anyway I get your point about the F1 possibly failing and losing all audio in your video. Of course you would have the F1 and another mic, such as the Rode mounted on or near the camera with the Rode plugged in to your camera. That's not so unusual. So either way you would have two sources of excellent audio for the video. The F1 audio would no doubt be superior. Maybe that's what you were planning to do anyway. I'm just a noob with digital cameras, but just wanted to get my thoughts sent to you. Btw, I recently purchased the Canon EOS M50 and Zoom F1 recorder. I really like both of them. I also have the Zoom H6. Thanks for your informative and entertaining vlogs. Ahhh Yeaah! Keep up the good work. 🤗 (sorry my comment is so wordy and lengthy)

    I see your argument 100%. My question is what is the Zoom F1 standby runtime? Because recording with it will drain batteries faster than a line out function. I have the H2n which has over 30 hrs battery. I use lithium’s and get longer, but I don’t record to the sd card. I line out and listen live through the headphone jack in the event the batteries drain and of course to monitor the audio from the device I line into. I’m interested in the F1 because it’s more compact and easier to use as a lavaliere if I so choose to but maybe I’ll get another H2n, not sure yet. But yes, backup audio is better than no audio.

    • @BinhDong
      @BinhDong  5 років тому

      I couldn't tell you what the standby time is. I know it's much longer than the recording time as I've forgotten to turn it off multiple times. I have a Zoom H5 and H6 and like them the F1 battery life is trash imho when recording. I got to try the lithum batteries to see if it makes a good difference.

    If the zoom fails you’re left with worthless audio. Odds of the zoom failing are about as good as the camera failing. Not likely. Sorry bud, I disagree on this.

      In Camera Audio is better than no audio. I’ve had the Mic jack not be fully seated or come loose during filming

    • @RustyZipper
      @RustyZipper 6 років тому +3

      Fail to plan is a plan to fail, I always have a backup. On the Rode Pro- what if the battery dies and you’re remote filming

    • @BinhDong
      @BinhDong  6 років тому +3

      AAA batteries are consumables. The battery life for the Zoom F1 is not that great. Depending on the production or video being made, some audio is better than no audio. In camera audio is worthless but it is at least something. But to each their own.

    I believe you can reccord on the F1 while it's connected to a camera but ok, that wouldn't be a backup against the Zoom F1 going dead (batteries).

      patrice373 you can record on the F1 while it’s connected to camera.

      Binh - I just discovered that FCPx does a fantastic job at butchering the Audio during the Auto “Fix” process. Never again will I do the fix.

    from the website, it says the Zoom F1 has audio redundancy. "While recording to your camera, the F1 can also record to a microSD card, providing a stereo audio file which can be edited in post-production."

      Yeah, marketing. So if you plug the Zoom F1 into the camera, How is that redundant if you are recording on the F1 and relying on it to send audio to the camera? What if the battery dies on the Zoom F1? You loose audio...It’ll only be redundant if you record audio independently on the Zoom F1 and the camera.

      If your recorder runs out of batteries means it could happen to your camera Also since you don't plan (Use fresh batteries) before to shoot,
      You can use the F1 to provide microphone to the in camera audio as well as an external recording. ohh nooo

    • @kanocularTV
      @kanocularTV 6 років тому

      i'm really hoping it's not just a marketing hype (the audio redundancy feature where it records both to your camera and to microSD card).. i believe in the U.S. it is illegal and falls under "False and Misleading Advertising".

    • @BinhDong
      @BinhDong  6 років тому

      It's not false advertising. You can do this on any of the portable recorders. I just don't prefer putting the audio from the F1 into the camera. It doesn't make sense to do that and record on the F1 as well.
