I freeze dry the tomato skins and powder them. Fabulous flavor to add to soups and sauces.
Cool
I have been doing them for about 2 years now. We sprinkle them with a basil garlic powder. its almost like eating a pizza cheese ball.
Neat idea! Thanks. I think I will have another bowl with warm water to thaw the fingers!
What a great idea, Thanks!
I suspect the "blanching" also helps keep the flavor full as well. I used to freeze corn w/o blanching and it quickly became tasteless, even though it had been frozen!
Good point, blanching can be a game changer for flavor!
Did you know you can freeze dry the skins? After they are done grind them up and you can use the powder to add tomato flavor without the liquid.
Thanks!
Thank you for your support!
Great idea thank you!
You are so welcome!
Great video, thank you John. Happy trails!
Thanks for the positive feedback! And thanks for watching!!
Perfect timing! Here in SW FL my tomatoes are starting to consistently come in and I’m always looking for different ways to extend the enjoyment. Thanks!
It's a great way to enjoy them all year long.
Game changer for sure! Thanks, John!
You are welcome, thanks for watching!
I was going to cutback on my tomatoes this summer, now I’m not. Yummmm
Thank you! These are fantastic, much better than chips (which I eat too much of, LOL)
Nice! Sometimes the fiddly stuff is REALLY worth the extra effort. I usually grow a lot of cherry tomatoes every year and it will be great to try them out like this. In the meantime, I will keep my eyes open for the store sales. I still have to try the grapes as well. 🍇 Thanks again for all the inspiration! 🍅 😋👍
Oh my, you haven't tried the grapes yet? It is a must do.
@@JohnInBibs The grapes are crazy-expensive in the stores around here right now. Waiting for a sale... 😄🍇🍇
I think I said this already but I gotta say it now if I haven’t yet. I LOVE hearing your flubs, they make me LOL especially when you have that smile on your face. So many “influencers” (I know you don’t like that word for yourself, but it’s what you are) edit that stuff out and the result is a static video. I really like yours!!
I was thinking about the grapes as you did this and then you bring it up on your own. You haven’t removed the skins on your grapes though.. curious if the chocolate might stay on better if you did🤔 (remembering the pinholes from that video).
Others already mentioned the skins and what you could do with them and I saw you replied into the compost bin, so I won’t bother with it.
I freeze dried slices last year and now that I got some more pouches from Top-M/Pleasant Grove, I’ll look into doing these cherry tomatoes. Last week I got my fanlocn from your Amzn store.. I didn’t realize how light it would be. Can’t wait to try it out!
Nice to see your list of 47 supporters, though I miss the video rehash.
So many of you have been asking about those skins, but I'm old school, they get composted. Thanks for the support!
Congratulations! Thanks for your great content. You've tried cutting in half with skin or piercing them like bluberries?
Thank you for the kind compliment. Yes I have tried both and both were good. Not as good as removing the skin, the texture of melt in your mouth without the skin to chew is a game changer for me and I think blanching actually boosted the flavor greatly. Just my opinion for what it is worth.
Thanks for your answer John! 😊
👍👍👍👍👍
Try dipping them in your chocolate. Might sound strange but it might be good. Thanks for sharing
Hmmmmm......
Pretty neat Jon! Waiting for water to boil is time consuming. I have always wondered if you can freeze dry nuts like pecans? I have an abundance of pecans and have been trying to figure out a way to store them for the off years.
I have never tried it but I have read about others doing it.
You have more patience than I do John. I bet they are better that way however.
Thanks, the reward of a tomatoes that dissolve in your mouth without the skin left over to chew is priceless LOL
I’ve seen a lot of people who freeze dry the skins as well and turn that into powder. Did you consider that? Just wondering
Not at all, into the compost bin
What kind of sealer is that?

@ Thanks so much!
So, they aren’t salty? I tried freeze drying some canned tomatoes and they were really salty. Probably salt in the canning, though.
Thanks for the idea!
I have just cut them in half, then sprinkle garlic powder on them.
I have done them cut in half before, they are good. But, these are better LOL
The grape tomatoes at P-bl-x taste nothing like the cherry tomatoes i used to love. Growing some this year. I usually get really good tomato crops, so cross fingers!
These were Cherubs brand, kind of bland fresh but OMG the freeze drying process really brought out a super rich tomato flavor!
@ sold! I will look for these Sunday! Thank you JiB!
There is a lot of stuff going around right now. I hope you don’t come down with the flu or something like that.
Thanks
😢 skins contain most of the tomatoes antioxidants, flavonoids and lycopene and an array of minerals, which helps with inflammation, cancer, heart and other healthy benefits and taste! Best to eat all of your fruits and vegetable whole if posible. To prep for the freeze dryer
I cut my tomatoes in chunks for Soups, sauces and to make powder. I cut slices for sandwiches. I cut my plums and cherry tomatoes in half. Plum and Cherry for a quick crunch in salads and sandwiches. sometimes I just crunch them up and put it in my avocado or cheese dips, in
salmon/ tuna fish salad or salad dressings. I love tomatoes and grow 28 plants every year.
Thanks for the input, I didn't invent peeling tomatoes but it sure enhances the tomato taste when freeze drying
Here’s another pro tip…freeze dry the skins and powder them. You can reconstitute them to use as tomato paste. I try not to waste a single thing! 😁
Wow you must be the 5th person to suggest this. I composted them and my Grape vines and berries will love them this spring.
