@@gregpresley1466 Felix Wright playing 10 yards behind the first down marker was what made the 3rd and 18 completion for a first down for 20 yards easier to get. Dan Reeves said to Elway to focus on getting at least half on 3rd down and then go for the rest on 4th down. Wise advice. But Elway said that when he lined up in the shotgun, the safety (Wright) was very deep and he had a chance for the whole 18 yards. Instead of looking for Tight End Orson Mobley who was about 10 yards in the open, he looked for Mark Jackson who caught the 20 yard pass. The rest is history.
I’m a steeler fan, so I’m no brownie, but the Browns never got the respect they deserved as a great football team in the late 80’s...there I said it. 😂
I sure miss all of these games from that era. It is certainly not the same today at all; greed for more money, political correctness, overhyped and stupid commercials.
@@ScorpioBornIn69 I saw my grandpa mute commercials back in the mid 90s, when I was visiting his house. I thought that was a great idea and have been 'muting' and 'minimizing' (to a small screen) pretty much all commercials for many years. There was a time when commercials were watchable, but almost all these days are UBER annoying and stupid. If too much T.V. makes you stupid, then muting and minimizing commercials, for me, helps me to salvage a little bit more intelligence that I would otherwise lose if I didn't. Is it just me or are there WAY MORE commercial breaks in NFL games and ALL T.V. programming than there has ever been before -- which ruins them and makes them almost unwatchable?
I think if the Browns revamped their logo or lack there of, it would help with their confidence...Id'e imagine a blank high school helmet is not very inspiring to play in.
I may be wrong but Elway never had a pro bowl WR... Just goes to show you how great he truly was. Respect for The Denver Broncos and The Real Cleveland Browns from a Die hard Cowboys fan.
Blue Skeptic mcaffrey was a great blocker, stil remember one of his blocks on broncos final drive in sb 32. But yeah bottom line elway only had talent around him during last 3-4 years of his career
Mark Jackson should have been in the Pro Bowl. Later on, there was a TE by the name of Shannon Sharpe. 8 Pro Bowls, and now in the H.O.F. Next to Gonzales, best TE ever. In the '97 AFC Championship Game, at Pittsburgh, facing a 3rd and 6, Shannon couldn't hear the call. Elway barked at him: "Just get open!". (He did). First down. Next stop: the Packers. "This one's for John". But only because of Shannon's ad lib at a critical time. The rest was history.
mtntime1 actually elway was the one who ad-libbed with the play he called, shannon then said that its not in the gameplan and then elway just said him to get open. And in the super bowl terrell was the hero
This game had it all: the mud, the playoff atmosphere, the drama, the thrill of victory, and the agony of defeat. I was in agony because I wanted Cleveland to win badly and I could't stand John Elway because of how he ditched the Colts. But I'm glad I lived in an era with so many classic games and where football was played with better fundamentals. It just doesn't seem quite the same anymore...uniforms are now always clean and pretty, can't spell half the names, many players struggle to block or tackle consistently, penalty flags are thrown every 3rd play it seems, too many guys showing off after making routine plays, and many new uniforms are sissified or just plain ugly. I still watch NFL football but it is lacking in many respects. Perhaps I am just hoping for a revival that will never be?
@@Nightrun007 Elway demanded a trade because he didn't want to play for neither the coach nor the owner Irsay. He was gonna play baseball if the Colts drafted him; Colts drafted him outta spite, so Elway requested a trade. But all of this became a butterfly effect as Baltimore ended up losing an entire franchise - though indirectly - because of his decision to 'ditch' the Colts
@@Nightrun007 yeah he refused to play for them he said he was going to go play Major League baseball people forget that John elway was a very good baseball player he was drafted by the Yankees.
the game isn't the same. it's not they've changed the rules. John elway playing in the league today which smash every passing record known to man. elway Montana Marino they made incredible passes out of their ear holes sometimes. those of us that got to watch the game in the 1980s we will never get the same joy out of it for one the talent level at the quarterback position was through the roof. and the game was a game of brute force and wills. today it is a game with few exceptions of finess and speed almost like basketball and cleats.... the money is too big they are suffering the same fate Major League baseball did free agency salary caps it's just a different game. brain trauma.... they took the big old set of horse nuts that was the NFL and they cut them off. and yes the game it's still entertaining. but the 1970s and 1980s early '90s that is the Golden age of NFL football that's when it was at its best. and people can be in denial or they want to like Major League baseball's golden age of the 60s and 50s it is now in decline. it will lose popularity through the years. as they neuter it more and more as players become more and more high paid tickets go through the roof out of reach for the average person they will have the same fate as baseball. like baseball it will be a slow death but there's no doubt it's in decline
I was watching an interview with Shannon Sharpe recently and he made it a point to draw attention to Elway's accuracy and field awareness. In the interview he made mention of the fact that Elway nearly ALWAYS threw the football exactly where he wanted it to go, and that many times in order to make a catch he, Sharpe, and the other Denver receivers, had to adjust their routes to catch the ball. In real time, unless you are watching closely, it might appear as a "bad" throw, but watch the pass at 1:29:01. If Elway had "lead" Winder up field, he'd of run into #59 of Cleveland and got his clock cleaned. Elway lead Winder, with a "bad" throw, outside and away from the charging linebacker, where Winder had time to adjust his route, catch the ball, and THEN turn up field. It is just like a running back "waiting" for his blockers to clear an alley on a sweep, rather than run by the lineman, and get tackled for a loss. Rarely did any Denver receiver get laid out because Elway lead him into a crushing hit. John may have had his "equals", but at QB, there was NOBODY better, ever, and there never will be. He and Montana, where the total player is greater than the sum of the parts.
I love my Broncos, but those Browns teams of the 1980's were better built top to bottom, to be a tougher matchup against the NFC juggernauts of that era.
Back then John Elway was the Michael Jordan of quarterbacks. He could carry a good but not great offense on his shoulders and still rise to the occasion.

Thank you very much!!
What a great game! Devastating loss for the browns but just shows u that you dont need each team to score 35 a piece for it to be amazing.
This is how you call a game... just tell me what I need to know and let me watch and enjoy the sights and sounds.
yersopunk completely agree. Today’s announcers talk way too much, and speak to their audience like the listeners are brand new to the sport. Beyond patronizing. Miss Enberg
This game is still heartbreaking 💔 for me. This was our ( Browns) game. Browns were better but the Broncos didn't quit. Good damn game.
Go Browns
Not to mention, our defense completely gave up. I'll never understand why, especially when we essentially had the game wrapped up.
@@nicholaszeman4045 Yeah. I have no words. The 80s was a heartbreaking decade altogether for the Browns.
This was a Classic game! Old school NFL great stuff
you bet.
ELWAY! KOSAR! THESE WERE THE BATTLES I LOVED GROWING UP! 🏉🏉🏉🏉
Same. Born in Cleveland, Grew up in Denver. My two favorite teams.
And how about a barefoot kicker to boot? Boy, those were the days.
I’m a steeler fan, so I’m no brownie, but the Browns never got the respect they deserved as a great football team in the late 80’s...there I said it. 😂
William Whalen they don’t get it because they didn’t win anything....were they very good? Yes, but great...no
Thanks I know that was tough (from a Browns fan since 1968) Wish we ran our organization like you guys ....there I said it !!!!!!! : - )
William Whalen Because the Clowns always choked in the playoffs.
The Browns were the truth back in the day man. That’s good ownership though (Modell’s).
@@jaymac508 Thanks, you made my point.
Love these priceless artifacts. I can actually remember quite a few of the names.
Me to
I love the quaility of these videos. Didn't look this good on my TV when I watched it live!!
I recorded this game on VHS and still have the tape though haven't played it for several years now since my VCR isn't playing well.
Damn I love these 1980s NFL games.
On the long list of heartbreaking moments for Cleveland sports fans, this one ranks right up there; possibly number 1.
I think if the Browns revamped their logo or lack there of, it would help with their confidence...Id'e imagine a blank high school helmet is not very inspiring to play in.
I say 1997 World Series Indians Marlins
The drive is how John Elay, destroyed The diver barcodes
1987 says "Wait 'til you see this."
My goodness I miss the old stadium.
Elway was such a clutch scramble out of pocket qb. He was one of the best
Minus the three blowout SB losses yes
Hey at least he went out a back to back champ
So you're telling me that there's no commercials after punts back in 86'? What is this game?
They took out the commercials.
@@WaltGekko even the commercials were better back then 😅
I may be wrong but Elway never had a pro bowl WR... Just goes to show you how great he truly was. Respect for The Denver Broncos and The Real Cleveland Browns from a Die hard Cowboys fan.
I low-key have always thought of Elway is the G.O.A.T.
Ed McCaffrey But I’m a diehard broncos fan
37 years later, and Karlis still missed
Sounds like Elway was traded to the Broncos by the Colts...he didn't 'ditch' them. They ditched him!
When NFL and life was simple and magical.
You cannot top this type of football .
Mud and hard hitting cold football today nothing like this
Dan Reeves in the classic rain coat of the time!! Mannnnn this game and the names invovled
You cannot be a Broncos fan without knowing about "The Drive".
don't forget about "The Fumble"
SmeagolPlaysGames or the barrel man
Or a Browns fan. Browns fan that was even born then, yet if I ever met John Elway I don't know if I'd shake his hand or punch him in the throat.
You can't be a Browns fan if you don't know about the drive trust me
One of my favorite play off games.thanks.
I love my Broncos, but those Browns teams of the 1980's were better built top to bottom, to be a tougher matchup against the NFC juggernauts of that era.
The Broncos routinely humiliated themselves in the Super Bowl in the late 80’s
Back then John Elway was the Michael Jordan of quarterbacks. He could carry a good but not great offense on his shoulders and still rise to the occasion.
I was 4 years old love these old games when football was football.
Wow! Brian Brennan would have been set for life at autograph shows, if it wasn't for Elway!
This game is no doubt one of the greatest of all time, great flow throughout the game from start to finish.
greatest drive in NFL history
Nope. Not even close. He had over 4 minutes to carve up that prevent defense.
Over 5 minutes...
Joe Montana called. He, and John Candy say otherwise
Bart Starr - Ice Bowl.
@@bengaljam4550 why were they playing prevent?,,,, Bengal???? Still 30 + years later and I feel Cleveland GAVE THAT GAME AWAY!!!! We're the Safties Rockins And Ellis gassed???? I KNOW Minnifield & Dixon were tired that why in the 4th and OT there were so many open receivers!!!!!! Shout out to Reggie Langhorne I Also went to Elizabeth City State University!!!!! BUT I'm a Giants fan and we were the best team in football that season blew out Montana And the Niners in the Division al Playoffs and Butchered The WFT in the NFC Championship Game!!!!! We BLEW OUT the BRONCOS and would have beaten Cleveland too we were #1 At stopping the run with Carl Banks & L T. And Kevin Mack would be nonn Factor!!!!! And The Defense would have been exhausted in Pasadena on a 75 degree night if they were tired in 28 degree weather playing THEIR STYLE OF BALL!!!!! WE ( N Y. Giants) would have run them too 31 - 17 !!!!!!
I'm a Bronco fan and rooted for my boys. But that Browns backfield -- Byner and Mack -- were an awesome one-two punch
I've watched that kick a thousand times. I can't decide. Great game !
Is it just me or is there a sort of magic from these games that appears to be missing in today games. Wasn't Browns fan but they were always entertaining to watch back then. Brian Sipe and Kardiac Kids in late 70s/early 80s and Bernie Kosar in mid/late 80s.
Yes, real hard hitting football on a real grass/dirt field, cold weather, real fans, intense atmosphere and announcers calling the game the way they should call it.
Gracias a este juegazo me hice fan de este bonito deporte, en especial de los broncos de Denver y de su excelente mariscal de campo el gran John elway
Its hard to imagine a human kicking a football barefoot in the cold. Amazing!
ya get more grip
Probably why he missed the field goal in overtime but let's not remember that
lol that's my dad's cousin. Our family is weird.
What a game. What a drive. 98 yards to be exact. John Elway at his greatest.
80s football the only thing better is 70s football. We were so lucky to get to watch this style of play. Look at the hits man. Woo son
Defenses were better in the 80s
the browns in a championship? what a time
You'll probably not see that again!
In the Super Bowl era, they were in 5. 1968 and 1969 (NFL Championship Game) and 1986, 1987 & 1989 (AFC Championship Game).
Divine Water Then they lose to the Broncos, afterward they get blownmout in the SB
+Divine Water: They played in 3 of them in a 4 year span. The Broncos won all 3 times then lost the SB all 3 times.
Kosar was great!!!
1:07:42 Clay Matthews future career in the WWF, gut kick to Wilhite and then a side kick to Studdard. CLASSIC LOVE IT!! When football was football.
That has nothing to do with playing football, that's called being a "PUNK"
Elway quick kick!! LOVE it!!
One of the best games ever played
Marlboro ads all over the stadium lol whatta different time!!
Smoking is disgusting. Tobacco companies are evil.
@@iangoodman2228 no they're not just another company making money...... You don't like it then move or try to elect a strong president
@Sho Tohara lol, people knew it then, had known for awhile. There were just a lot more smokers then.
@@redfro4992 due to the ads. If they didn't kept people smoking they wouldn't invest so much.
Since the ads, the amount of smokers have fallen a lot and, from what I can see, many stores hide the cigarettes as much as they can.
And they started to smell worse
I thought the same thing when I see that.
21 year old from Cleveland watching the crowd celebrate the Brennan TD brings me to tears. My dad was at the game. It’s surreal and also so sad to know how close they came. I can only imagine that the way I felt when Davis hit the HR in game 7 is how this crowd felt. One day soon redemption will come
Browns have the coolest am most energetic fan base
The true goat mr John elway never seen quarterback throw a football the way he did
isn't this one of the top 10 football games ever?
Blake bortals fan Aka Bruinsbetrayer Yes
Yep
Yes.
If not, should be.
Id say Top 5. Definately
Merlin Olson was under rated guys, Little House on The Prairie was killer, he was honest as a sports caster as well.
the comments section only shows how much people ignore about basic nfl history.
big4lego exactly I can't believe most of these people don't know that the browns used too be good but then they moved to baltimore and Became the baltimore ravens
ikr its just annoying
Pablo Mateo Piñas Agreed is the Browns didn’t blow it a lot they could be considered the team of the 80s
Yep! The Fumble! Ernest Byner on Denver's 2 yard line
I know right?
Chip Banks last game on the Browns. He was awesome from 1982-1986 with them making 4 Pro Bowls.
the golden era of NFL football.
Moseley of Cleveland kicking with a straight on run, and Denver's Karlis kicking barefoot. Two things you wouldn't see today.
No dancing, dabbing or ticky-tack fouls...just good old hard-hitting football on a muddy, trash strewn field.
And 1 bar helmets!
Oh, and hard hitting that we know causes concussions that could end a persons life!
But you know... good and the bad.
and bare foot kickers...though Karlis did cost us a few games by hitting the goal post.
Ain't it great!
Kurt Troyer You played for the broncos?
@Eugene Blyther Yeah, I miss the days when "Run and Shoot" was exotic and teams ran the ball on passing downs. *sarcasm
First time I have watched this game since 1986. Wow! Even better this time around!
Merlin Olsen, one of the best Analysts ever on TV, along with Len Dawson! Grieve good too , on NBC. Of course Madden the best on Fox/CBS. Play by Play I say Charley Jones was the Best! Embers right behind him! I think old AFL GAMES & I think of Charley Jones! He was the voice of the AFL. I loved those old games in the mid to late 60’s!!
Merlin Olsen is outstanding doing commentary in this game.
Who would have ever thought nine Seasons later Cleveland would not have a football team thanks Modell's😢😢
The greatest drive in NFL history
Nowhere close to the greatest drive. He had 4 minutes to go down the field
Ice Bowl.
Prevent Defense helped Elway - it prevents you from winning
JAMES KNAPKE back then Defenses ruled the league. 4 minutes was pretty short
+wayne merritt: Yup. Been saying that since the 80's and teams and their coaches don't seem to comprehend that.
The play by play was excellent.Really liked the the AFC brand of football over NFC back in the day and I miss the NBC 80's announcers the most.
Amazing, on the sidelines would be two future Super Bowl winning head coaches for Denver, Kubiak (2nd string QB) and Shanahan (Offensive Coordinator). Remember watching 4 Super Bowl losses before we would have our first championship. WOW, Time has flown by!!
Young fans of Today don’t understand broncos fans from that era how we got ridiculed and made fun on because broncos were the bills before the bills but winning that first super bowl wiped the slate clean but I remember how we were perceived before that.
This is what made me fall in love with the NFL as a kid growing up in the UK.
Playoff games in freezing and hostile conditions.
God I miss the old stadium and those old Browns teams.
"Let's get the gleam".
no matter how many years go by.. this one hurts like hell. thank god for the 2016 cavs or this pain may never have gone away.
1:53:18 that would have been such a perfect game-winning touchdown, especially for Cleveland.
Enberg one of the all time greats. One of the reasons football was better back then, at least to me, and no I'm not that old.
agreed and im not old either. long live enberg on nbc and pat on cbs
This is back when pro football was still a man's sport. Cleveland was one of the most hostile environments in the NFL back in those days for visiting teams. Still looks to me like Karlis missed that last kick though
He did...
