The man was a gamer. He played a huge part in some of the greatest and most memorable football games ever played, college AND pro (84 Orange Bowl, 86 AFC title game, 87 AFC title game)
When I was a kid, I knew the name and number of just about every key player on each team. It's such a kick hearing all these guy's names again. Now I can barely name the key players on my home team. I don't even watch the games anymore, I just catch the highlights on UA-cam.
It was a special time. Old Mile High stadium, that incredible crowd, Elway working his magic. The Superbowls were terrible, but everything else in between were something else.
Elway actually had a pretty strong game, individually, against the Giants. When you consider how strong that Giants defense was, his performance was impressive.

When Elway hit Nattiel on Denver’s first offensive play of Super Bowl XXII I thought they were going to win it all, little did I know I would suffer for 10 more years as a Broncos fan until they finally won a Super Bowl! 😆
Try being a Browns fan and watching this happen 4 times once against the Raiders Red 88, and Three times against the Broncos (The Drive, The Fumble and 1989-90 season) and then never sniffing a AFC championship game after that with only 3 playoff appearances since and the team being stolen the only other team cursed like us is the Lions
I fell in love with the uniform, first, myself. I loved the helmet, but even more the fiery orange jersey. So imagine how I felt when they changed their uniforms...it made the titles bittersweet....and as soon as Elway retired, I was done with Denver, for life. I am still furious over what they did.

The only Bronco fan east of the Mississippi in those days. Fuk Rob Lytels fumble! WE WIN and go to the SB. My mom took pictures of me in Denver gear. EIGHT HORRIBLE TURNOVERS and a 27-10 loss to Dallas. F it! We got Elway and I cried as a grown man when we beat the Packers. Sooooo many years! But Elway got 2!

Never has a player been defined negatively by a game he played so spectacularly in. Earnest Byner was the reason the Browns were even IN POSITION to tie this great game. Thank goodness he got that chip in Washington in 1991.

BROWNS fan. This was an awesome game!!! Was in US Army and stationed in West Germany at the time. Had to stay up late in order to watch this game in 1987. Also remember staying up late for that double overtime win against the JETS and "The Drive" in 1986. Back then games were pre-recorded and sent to Germany for the troops to watch roughly a week later. Only LIVE games were playoffs and Super Bowl. Heartbreaker of a game for sure. UHG!!! Also, do not forget "The Interception" in the early 1980s against the RAIDERS when the BROWNS just needed to kick a field goal to win and advance to the next level, but they went for a touchdown instead and RAIDERS intercept and win the game. RAIDERS go on to win the Super Bowl against the EAGLES that year. Cleveland "destiny" I suppose. Elway was a BEAST in both these games against Cleveland.
Yep - Kosar was allowed to play the last few moments of that Super Bowl as well with Dallas. Think he more or less threw the ball once or twice and knelt down for the win against Buffalo.

To this day I feel bad for him after getting no SB rings in Cleveland, Kansas City, and San Diego.

Webster Slaughter is to blame for the fumble. His job was to wither block or run and take the defender with him. He ran a few yards and stopped and the man covering him was let free to punch the ball out of Byner. Had Webster done his job, Byner had an easy touchdown.

It was quite a game. I slept on a sidewalk, in a mummy bag, in freezing temps to get tickets to that game. It was worth the effort. We were all quite nervous on that drive.

The NFC was dominant during this period and always winning the Super Bowl, it was a surprise that Denver played as well as they did for one half against the Giants.

This was an excellent Highlight - not too long but more importantly not too short - often they are way too short (especially Tennis recaps) so you have no suspense or meaning
Cleveland's fan base has paid their dues and then some over the years. The Cardiac Kids era, "The Drive", "The Fumble," always ending up a day late and a dollar short. Then Modell rips the heart out of the fan base by moving the team to Baltimore and just TWO YEARS LATER they win the Super Bowl. I'm not a part of their beleaguered fan base but for a long time I was thinking if/when they ever have a shot, I'm jumping aboard the train. Well, this year they've got a shot and I'm all in. Go Browns!!!
It's got to be rough to be a Browns fan. Just the fact that for nearly the last twenty years the Browns have been, at best, mediocre or one of the worst teams in professional sports. The AFC Championship losses hurt, but the Browns would've got crushed by the Giants, Washington, and the Niners, anyway, the same way almost every AFC team got smashed in the Super Bowl for 13 years.
He did get a Super Bowl ring with a TD later on with the Skins. By his own admittance this destroyed his creativity as a player. He was never the same, yet still had a good career.
I remember watching that game with my first wife because she was a Denver fan. If I remember correctly, Denver played the 49ers that year, and the 49ers won the Super Bowl.
As a bronco fan you could see the vulnerability of the defense.Cleveland shouldve never gotten back in that game.Those bronco receivers played their hearts out every game.
This is one of my first football memories as a kid - the very first being Pats/Phins AFC championship the year prior. Elway’s scrambling ability always frustrated me as a Pats fan. Elway/Broncos didn’t win this game as much as Browns lost it. Poor tackling in the secondary cost the Browns. Either way…a great game. I miss this era of football. They just played the game! No politics or message agendas.
So unfair to label this game in a way that dinged Ernie. Wouldn't have even been competitive in this game without him, 160 yards of offense and 2 TDs. I guess the media people missed the fact the defense gave up 36 points (I won't blame the intentional safety by Denver on the defense). Also, if the fumble had not happened and the Browns scored, all that would have done is tied the game with a minute left. Given the defense's inability to little more than let Elway play catch with his receivers all day, it's my thought Denver would have taken the kickoff and been in field goal range in 4 plays

Excellent blocking by Denver.
This was an excellent Highlight - not too long but more importantly not too short - often they are way too short (especially Tennis recaps) so you have no suspense or meaning
I remember the same stuff about this game!
First there was “the drive” and the next year there was “the fumble”. Broncos were the browns daddy back then

Cleveland's fan base has paid their dues and then some over the years. The Cardiac Kids era, "The Drive", "The Fumble," always ending up a day late and a dollar short. Then Modell rips the heart out of the fan base by moving the team to Baltimore and just TWO YEARS LATER they win the Super Bowl. I'm not a part of their beleaguered fan base but for a long time I was thinking if/when they ever have a shot, I'm jumping aboard the train.
Well, this year they've got a shot and I'm all in. Go Browns!!!

It's got to be rough to be a Browns fan. Just the fact that for nearly the last twenty years the Browns have been, at best, mediocre or one of the worst teams in professional sports. The AFC Championship losses hurt, but the Browns would've got crushed by the Giants, Washington, and the Niners, anyway, the same way almost every AFC team got smashed in the Super Bowl for 13 years.

Earnest Byner was to give a talk at my sister's high school in Cleveland so I told her to tell Mr.Buyer that Denver will love him forever.
I was at the game. Forth row, 45 yard line. Coutusty of my parents and Uncle Ronnie. AKA RB to the Bronco players.
Earnest Byner is known for this play but in all honesty it's a mockery he's not in the hall of fame
He did get a Super Bowl ring with a TD later on with the Skins. By his own admittance this destroyed his creativity as a player. He was never the same, yet still had a good career.

I remember watching that game with my first wife because she was a Denver fan. If I remember correctly, Denver played the 49ers that year, and the 49ers won the Super Bowl.

As a bronco fan you could see the vulnerability of the defense.Cleveland shouldve never gotten back in that game.Those bronco receivers played their hearts out every game.
God I miss this type of football. Paper all over the field, hard nose hitting without penalties Dick Enberg in the booth, it doesn't get better
This is one of my first football memories as a kid - the very first being Pats/Phins AFC championship the year prior. Elway’s scrambling ability always frustrated me as a Pats fan. Elway/Broncos didn’t win this game as much as Browns lost it. Poor tackling in the secondary cost the Browns. Either way…a great game. I miss this era of football. They just played the game! No politics or message agendas.

Man, Byner did a great job of keeping them in the game...and a better job of taking them out of the game.
I was and still am a Broncos fan, but wished that the Browns had taken one of those trips to the Super Bowl. They deserved a shot at the big one.

Aside, I hated that NBC would hide the scoreboard, until after the commercial break, flash it, then hide it.
So unfair to label this game in a way that dinged Ernie. Wouldn't have even been competitive in this game without him, 160 yards of offense and 2 TDs. I guess the media people missed the fact the defense gave up 36 points (I won't blame the intentional safety by Denver on the defense). Also, if the fumble had not happened and the Browns scored, all that would have done is tied the game with a minute left. Given the defense's inability to little more than let Elway play catch with his receivers all day, it's my thought Denver would have taken the kickoff and been in field goal range in 4 plays

Only difference is John Elway actually earned his and didn't have to go to another team as a back up to get it.
