    So...
    Necrons- Reviving robots hellbent on eliminating organic life all over the universe
    Tau- You may have the best swords in the galaxy, but good luck getting all the way over here.
    Tyranids- Strength in numbers
    Orks- Fungus based creatures, that have an ablilty to make things happen if enough of them believe it wil happen.
    Eldar- Dying race, really fast and can pull off some great deep strikes.
    Dark Eldar- Resilient fiends that have really damaging melee weapons, and are kinda sorta hard to kill.
    Harliquins- Space clowns, crazed, and repeating great acts of war that happened long ago.
    Now time for man
    Space marines- Jack of all trades/Masters of none, while in base form, if you add chapter tactics they become masters of one specific thing.
    Imperial Gaurd- We have more men, than they have bullets.
    Adeptus Mechanicus- Cyborgs, worshiping a machine god, with really advanced weaponry.
    Adeptus Soroitas- Respect Wahmen.
    Questor Imperialis- Knightly Houses that will make you remorgage your house for three models.
    Adeptus Titanicus- 1 model is the cost of half an army, and has more weaponry on it that an Imperial gaurd army has in it.
    Now time for Chaos
    Undivided- Like Space Marines but, you have to center your army around one god in order to get a specialised force.
    Tzench - If you want to have rubric marines, with fire, and dakka, with psychic powers out the wazzo, then this.
    Nurgle- Shrugging off tank shots? No problem, just a litte costly if ya know what I mean
    Khorne- BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD
    SKULLS FOR THE SKULL THRONE
    MILK FOR THE KHORNE FLAKES
    CORN FOR THE POPKHORNE
    Slaneesh- words DO hurt.

    Serious answer with no fanboyism: play whatever faction you like looking at. Because you will be looking at them for hours and hours and hours of your life as you buy the models, assemble the models, paint the models, read a codex to learn how to play the models, put the models on the table, move the models around the table, then take the models back off the table. That is a LOT of looking at them, so you'd better like looking at them.
    You can learn every faction. You can "your dudes" your way to any backstory you want, no matter how good/evil the canon faction is and how evil/good you want to be. You can even find a technically-canon-compatible excuse for female Space Marines (not Sisters) if you want. You can do anything with any army, as long as you like them enough to make them your hobby.
    THAT is how you choose your army. Take something you like, and make it YOURS using the power of your devotion to your hobby.
    (Regarding the Female Marines, it's actually not that hard. Get an Arch-Magos Biologis with a copy of the Codex Astartes in his flat, a generation of vat-grown workers where the Y-chromosomes had a terminal genetic error, and a surplus shipment of power armor in his warehouse. Bingo bango, you have female Skitarii counts-as Space Marines)

    NEVER pick an army just because it wins tournaments. You buy the tourney list copycat exact and get destroyed by the local mates at the clubstore and get disappointed.

      @@theadtheogrekiller5629 You buy an army because it stomped others the previous year and everyone will be making armies to counter it. If the rules exploit it took to stomp everyone else was too hard, then the rules will be updated to nerf it. "the highest nail is always the first to be hammered" the saying goes, you would be better of if you coppied the second or third place, as people are less likely to change their aproach to the game to counter them
      Ideally though, you will learn why the winner stomped everyone else and do just the bare minimal to resist/counter it, all the while you focus on the units that will smash the counters to the previous winner play style, as THEY will be the most common thing for the next season.

    There is only one correct answer to this question: You pick whatever you think looks the coolest and you only buy one box of models at a time, until you've assembled and painted them.
    Unless you're rich and can't be bothered to paint, then you just buy a nicely painted army wholesale.
    Playing with models is secondary, for two reasons: 1. If you want to play the game, you can typically borrow an army from a friend who's already into it or at a hobby store that has a club or gaming setup. 2. If you don't care about the models, your money is far better spent on a PC and RTS titles like StarCraft or turn based ones like civ or heroes of might and magic.
    (I'm being somewhat facetious, but it is genuinly good advice. The worst you can do is buy a load of boxes and just give up because you have way too many things to do, ditching the whole thing altogether. It's better to focus on one small project at a time.)

    • @TheClassicWorld
      @TheClassicWorld 6 років тому +3

      I agree, and I learnt that Games Workshop itself first designs the models and then the lore, etc. Models always come first! Personally, I love almost all of the armies from all the game systems and I've collected most. I only paint.
      Top five 40k armies for me are as follows: Tau, Ad Mech, Tyranids, Harlequins, and Orks.

    • @asteck113
      @asteck113 6 років тому +1

      But what if I like the lore but hate the look of the models?
      What if I like how the models play, but have no intrest in painting?
      What if I don't like RPGs or mobas or anything of that sort, and love the human element of playing?
      What if...
      There is a lot of ways playing a y'know GAME is primary for some people, thus saying that for two reasons Playing a GAME is secondary to the hobby that is like an add on to the GAME is kinda Wrong.

    • @asteck113
      @asteck113 6 років тому +1

      Yes, the hobby is an add on, because the boxes don't come with all the needed paints for painting, they have reference photos on the back, but nothing more.
      Because they have a line of paints for hobbists, doesn't mean that it is a part of the game, the only army that does that is orks, and yeah red does make things go fasta.
      They develop Codexes and indexes and rule books for The GAME. They have two apps on the playstore, just for the GAME, they have 1 app for the hobby, you don't have to enjoy painting to play this game, nor do you have to like the game to paint.
      Also just because they develop the models to look cool, doesn't mean that they are notioning for you to put the hobby first. If I put a pice of shit on the table, and say thats a imperial knight, you would say hell naw. They make models to make them memorable, and more buyable, because not a lot of people will buy a shit looking model.
      Also, if you just buy paints and no models, there is nothing for you to paint, nothing for you to base, no reason for you to have those paints, YOU HAVE to buy the Models for a GAME before you can do anything with the hobby, thus making the hobby more like a DLC then its own seperate entity. Like gunplas if you know what I am talking about.
      Soo...

      @@asteck113
      It's not likely to like lore but hate ALL models, but even then, you can always kitbash/convert to fix whatever you don't like about them. For no intrest in painting you can always keep your design simple (rule of 3 colors) or, if you have money, commision your models. And for human elements, a lot of turn based strategies, like Heroes of Might and Magic 3, have hot seat mode, so you can play with another person next to you.

      I have collected almost all of the armies over my life. It's the best thing ever. Although, I got rid of everything a few years ago, so, I don't have much now. Got Necromunda, a small Tau army, lots of terrain, some Fantasy models, an Imperial Knight, and some others, but also countless paints, books, anniversary items, etc. Still, quite a bit of money. Also, making a large Lizardmen diorama now, so, that's £200.

  • @MrMaxamumdes
    @MrMaxamumdes 6 років тому +4

    I find it funny how many times my choice of army has varied over the years. It's started with chaos, cause I though, marines are cool, but spiky marines with a splash of daemonic possession are cooler. Later I started collecting both dark eldar and necrons, because I thought the models were gorgeous. The dark elder style is so sharp and deadly looking, while the unflinching legions of machines with the eerie glow of thier weapons makes necrons look awesome.
    Then I basically went between the 3 for the longest time, until the adeptus mechanicus and imperial knights were released. For years I had wanted an adeptus mechanicus army, and I finally got my wish. They're the only imperial faction I collect but they're so cool thematically I couldn't resist. It's been a long journey with gw and honestly I can't wait to see what the release next! (Might even get make an adeptus ministorum army when plastic sisters come. The ultimate army of religious fanatics sound fun to model!)

    Just drafted up a 2,500 point Chaos army last night, I'm running them as Iron Warriors just so my warlord can have Fleshmetal Exoskeleton but I'll probably give them a different paint scheme.
    That being said I've seen a few 8thEd Battle Reports and I'm really liking some of the Tau stuff, the species that collectively said "Fuck Grimdark, this is a Mecha Anime now"

    Great overview of all the factions! Given all the new armies that Age of Sigmar are getting at the moment is 40K ready for a new faction? I know some of the older armies are well overdue an update (Eldar and Orcs for starters).
    Personally I would like to see all the Eldar get a restart. Jes Goodwin's models and art are amazing but the models look and feel (almost 30 years?) very old now.
    You hit the nail on the head with Orcs. Watching the last Mad Max film all I could think of was "this is what Orcs should look like"! I'm keeping my fingers crossed the new codex will be supported by a few new models.

    In the end, for the tabletop, you're going to have to paint a butt load of models. So, while the way an army plays is a consideration, you need to select an army that has an asthetic that will keep your interest or you'll never finish it. If you're new to the hobby, I'd recommend picking up a random plastic box and splitting it up in 3 or 4 groups, and trying different paint schemes on them. That way you know what you're getting into before you try to build a full army. Or, if you're lazy, but want to play the game do necro or space muhreens. Spray a solid base black, rough spray your chosen color, then you just add highlight color. Me, well my main army is IG, with vehicles. But I started with space Marines and got really bored painting them, so I have a few squads of them. Done a couple squads of mechanicus, done a couple squads of Eldar, done a squad of necro (omg necron are boring to paint, but you can do an entire squad of them in less time than it takes to hand paint camo on one IG trooper).

I want to know which army does what, how they play, which traits they have, what sets them apart, who is strong in what and what weaknesses they have, etc. Like with the Imperial Guard the introductory bit was "They are the best army for tanks."

    Super, I think all your videos are great. The only suggestion that I would have if you are targeting new players would be a rules video (if you have one and I missed it, my apologies). You do a great job with unit specific tactics videos, but maybe a video outlining basic tactics employed by specific armies. Also, one of the video types that has really helped me in 8th (and 7th as well) are list building videos. Breaking down different ways to build a list, placing them in detachments that maximize their command points etc. Keep up the great work!

    To make your hobby has longer life span:
    1) Theme of the army 1st
    2) model quality 2nd
    3) gameplay 3rd
    Love the model, then go for gameplay. GW hasn't got relatively pleasent rulebooks most of the time, prepare to make a few house rule to make gameplay slightly playable.
    Although 8th edition starts to make sense.

    I do feel that some of more resilient armies like Death Guard, Necrons and all flavors Space Marines (both Imperial and Chaos) in general are best for beginners as those are less punishing when you make mistakes. That said Tau are rather easy to play as well since they pretty much sit around and shoot everything that gets into they line of sight.

    • @mattxander8976
      @mattxander8976 4 роки тому +1

      Boy Peppel i know it’s 10 months later, but...
      I’d say necrons are a great start for painting. Tau are also not too bad, since you do A basecoat and usually one colour overtop, and they look pretty sleek.
      Space marines are great for sure, as they are easy to pick one colour scheme and go from there. You can slowly but surely get better as time goes on as well!
      Ones to avoid I’d say is orks...so much green and so many little bits and very ramshackle looking. Lots of flavour, but tedious when you have to paint 100-200 units!
      Tyranids are the same thing as orks. Imperial guard aren’t too bad to paint but there’s a lot of them to paint. A person could burn out quickly after painting hundreds of models.
      There’s a lot of great painting guides on UA-cam as well! Check them out!

      Cmdr Snake Hi. Yes the Dark Imperium set is a good place to start. I would also recommend visiting your local store if possible. Just don’t let them pressure you into buying anything. 8th edition rules came out last year in June. 9th are probably 3 or 4 years away. They are the simplest rules so far imo.
