Destiny 2's Lore and Story from the Crota's End might've been very different if Oryx had intervened to assist Crota. So why didn't he? There are a variety of reasons, from Crota being exiled for allowing Vex to invade his father's throne world to the simple tenets of the sword logic. Today we'll be exploring the books of Sorrow and Sword Logic to understand this important part to the story of Crota's End.

I saw what you did there with that ad
Video starts at: 1:33
I mean sword logic their is honor in dying in a way hive are similiar to invincible viltrumite ideology culture cull weak forge the strong and rule by the wise etc.
also oryx has so many children grand children too
Amazing ad. Got a good chuckle out of me
Crota: “DAD HELP”
Oryx: “bruh I’m like galaxies away wtf do you want me to do??”
He could've wormholed his way to it I guess
Oryx wouldn't help, he already told crota get strong or don't come back when he pushed him into a vex portal, pretty sure same thing here, beat them or die
@@longps9528Oryx wrote the sword logic for the hive, he'd be making a mockery of it if he stepped in and saved Crota in the raid, when being on the moon was a punishment for being weak to begin with
HELP
@@gamerguru2924 essentially oryx is the kinda dad who leaves to get milk and never comes back
I’d always assumed it was because 1: the Hive don’t really save each other since they ought to prove their right to exist and 2: Even with FTL travel it takes time for the Dreadnaught to arrive. It didn’t arrive until AFTER the House of Wolves expansion, so that’s some time apart.
Even if Oryx was in the system I don’t think he would’ve step in. Hell he didn’t even step in when we ran a train on his Twin daughters.
Such is the Hive.
@@shooterDisease a train is crazy 😂
@@shooterDisease Did WHAT to his daughters?
@@thehale_ Railed them, pay attention 😉

5:10 I like how Oryx has no idea what his daughters just said and basically told them to speak English to him
Legit what I thought when he pulled his sword and said "speak in the royal tongue."
Man said I don’t speak BrayTech
My brain went "I don't speak radial mast, use English"
Thank goodness Oryx spoke up bc I didn't get a damn word of it either! X)
I never questioned why Oryx didn't help Crota. Why would he think he needed to? Crota had fought a thousand Guardians and not only won but he beat them so badly they banned all other attempts at fighting him. If 6 Guardians went against him after that then there's no reason they would be perceived as a real threat. At least not until it was too late.
underrated take.
For some of us who have had a less interesting life, it's hard to imagine why a parent wouldn't do everything and anything for their children
@codyhunt5916 most normal parents aren't genocidal magic space demon alien things in a death cult. You can't use real world human logic for fictional creatures like the hive.
He was weakened 3 different ways way before we encounter him he had to lend permanent tribute cuz one of his knights lost to xuivu also we killed most of his court and also killed part of his soul mans was was literally like 20 percent power he was legit a ghost of his former self his head was missing bc we destroyed it
@@too_official6194 you have zero proof he was nerfed to 20 perfect of his power plus killing tributes are literally how sword logic works he wasn’t weakened
Lol, Oryx was like “speak English please” to his daughters
That and the Hive equivalent of “We’re so grounded if dad finds out” being “Father’s going to eat our souls” just sent me.
@@joeywilkinson1398That an Savathun being the totally jerk middle sister calling Xivu THE MOMENT she founds out Oryx wants a favor to tell her "eyo we can totally prank him the kids broke the lock on the door" was such a family moment it could have been a sitcom

I love how oryx has no fucking idea what they mean
When Byf says, "...failure in Crota's life," I just picture Crota couch surfing on the Dreadnought while Oryx shakes his head in the background.
You know, in retrospect, it’s a shame we don’t get more spoken lines for Crota and Oryx than we got. Would love some more spoken dialogue to add to the lore, similar to what they did for Savathûn and Xivu Arath.
We get a bit more Crota lore with Hashladun’s story.
Ppl think Oryx was a ruthless father?? Pffft Crota was a real piece of work…
@@shooterDisease Man is the reason why the vex is here. Crota is truly a piece of work.
Crota technically has no 'spoken lines' besides broadly interpretable whispers from Dark Below.
Boys are more silent types, even if Oryx is a transgender.
@@Fusible_1no it was savathuns fault but yeah

Deathsingers: Father, we have deduced a possible method to strengthen us all and our death songs by creating tautological and autonomous thanatospheres.
Oryx: SMALLER WORDS FOR I AM
OLD AND MENTALLY INEPT.
Deathsingers: We can use little hive souls to make big oversoul in your throne world that make it harder to kill us.
I’ve always said that the Oryx we fight in The Taken King and the Oryx we read about in the books of sorrow are 2 completely different characters. It doesn’t make sense for Oryx to seek vengeance in Crota’s name… he’d be more likely to congratulate us for it.
I believe he didn’t want vengeance. He wanted to challenge us. If we’re strong enough to kill his son then he’d have a fun fight. He was wrong. Dare i say he was *dead* wrong.
Crota still provided a shit ton of tribute for him to the point he immediately felt when he died.
Oryx probs didn’t have a choice. He needed to make up that missing tribute. What better way than the beings that killed the Eater of Hope?
Come back Glorious or Die Forgotten. Daddy wasn’t angry, daddy was very curious as to what dismantled his tithes. We gave him a hell of a fight!
Savathun to Xivu Arath: "Vengeance? Oryx was a hypocrite and so are you."
It really wasnt revenge, it was him trying to put an end to what stopped the massive feed of tribute that crota sent to oryx
Your Fallout impersonation is spot on. Excellent work, completely fooled
Thx lore daddy
You didnt
Ayo 🤨
??
Thats big lore daddy to you
Weirdo
I think what is interesting is we now know that Xivu is somewhat reacting and attacking us out of vengeance. Does this mean that everytime she attacks us or kills out of vengeance for her brother, she is tithing to Eris and making her stronger?
Yes. This means she is now inadvertantly helping us kill her. She can't seek vengeance since she no longer benefits entirely from it. That tribute now scales to Eris. Eris is now a reactionary type of God. The more you seek to kill her, the more you seek retribution and vengeance, the more powerful she becomes.
One thought that I had is that revenge for killing Crota and Oryx is a bad motivation for Xivu Arath, because the way that the Hive should see it is that "guardians are more suited to the final shape than Crota and Oryx, therefore I should keen myself against their blades", but now that Eris is the Hive god of Vengeance, Xivu's revenge rampage tithes to Eris.
Could even be a cycle because I'm sure that every dead guardian that doesn't suffer a final death would like to pay back the hive with interest.
Byf imitating Fallout made me laugh out loud.
lost it at the "Hey." image.
Imagine how un winnable an oryx and crota fight would be, oryx with his army, throne world and darkness control. and crota with his oversoul and ‘presence of crota’ (meaning no health regen) just the clusterfuck of the oryx arena with crota running about one shotting people too (he one shot anyone if direct contact was made in D1 so I’m counting that as the canon version)
Oryx never helped his son because he was below light level to carry through the next expansion
Good video, that was an interesting connection to make between Crota’s death and the recent releases dialogue between Xivu and Savathun.
Semi related: you NEED to do a lore deep dive video on the lore tab of the D2 Necrochasm. It connects together Cocytus, Crota, the Weapons of Sorrow, the Hive weaponsmith Enkaar, the Anointed, and Cursed Thralls, and drops some massive bombshells while also raising equally big questions.
My first ever Day 1 raid! We didn’t even beat Crota on Normal mode, but I’ve never had so much fun playing Destiny!
I can’t help thinking of what a twist it would be, if Eris not only killed Xivu Arath, but turned around and took the information from Savathun by force, via Strand and Deepsight, after the Witch Queen refuses. Only to nearly kill Savathun, before she escapes in fear. I do have to say, the raid on the Hellmouth would’ve been a much more different story if Oryx had been there.
Savathun didn't know about strand
Glad we got lore accurate Crota in the Day 1 race
The hive are why I love the lore of this game . Thanks byf
No one’s going to call out the sisters at 9:51 sounding like teens caught throwing a party at their parents house?!? “Dad’s gonna kill us”
legit picturing the kids trashing the house while Dad goes out for beer and cereal with that Vex invasion lmao "Dad's going to kill us"
Send help X)
The add was actually legendary and had me cackling to the point where my better half had to come ask me what was wrong
Im not sure I agree with the context of the tributes as to why Oryx came for us after crota. My understanding is that their morphs are related to the archetypes of king, witch and general. If I'm looking at it in the context I would in a novel, the king would kill his sons murderers the same way he would kill his daughters' murderers. Not for a tithe but for the disrespect and the potential threat to his position. Banished or not, crota was in a sense a prince.
Really nice to add the Dinasty clips there
Rhulk’s family: abandoned him
Calus: kills daughter’s dog because she loved it more than him
Oryx: Bad father, had to at one point kill his sisters, when they were kids they lost their father when the three were kids
A lot of villains were bad parents or had bad families
Man I stopped playing season of the deep like 2 weeks in. But I’m really loving this seasons content and story so far. Liking learning about the hive too the most interesting enemy imo
I think that audio recording was more of Savathun insulting her more successful brother one last time. Because Oryx knew his place in the universe, he knew his place in sword logic. Oryx knew that, inevitably, one day, he will meet someone or something much stronger than him and will kill him, he knew and accepted this. Albeit still finding a way to co-exist with his killer giving both his killer and himself power
That being said, they were really suppose to give up some of the attachments they had for each other. Seek to kill the killers for the sake of the sword logic but not out of vengeance for the dead have proven themselves worthless.
The Fallout bit during the ad read gave me a good chuckle
Good watch after my challange clear, thank you lore dad
Crota dying is Oryx's cannon event
Are these animations by you? I need a whole series for lore that would be so f****** dope
The way it sounds to me is that, through his exile, Crota proved his worth to his father.
I imagine it would have taken a long time and many, many tithes but in that time Crota would have grown in both strength and knowledge probably to the point where Oryx ended Crotas banishment.
I don't think Oryx would have asked him to come back though, with the way the hive work my guess is that Oryx ended the banishment but encouraged Crota to keep doing what he was doing because it was working for him (at the time anyway).
I'm guessing the only way Crota could ever consider returning was if he served up the Traveler on a plate. He certainly was in a position to do so but well, he couldn't get past the last obstacle.
I love the fallout ad spoof😂
My favorite thing to do is play D2 while listening as you give in depth lore. Thanks Bean Byf
Always wondered this! Pretty cool.
Crota & Oryx Runs w/ my old guild were simultaneously the most fun, but also the most infuriating. Because, idk if any of the raid has been patched or changed since the first 3 months of release, but I remember on the hardest difficulty possible if you weren’t cheesing things, and ONE fireteam member wasn’t almost flawless with their aim & rotation speeds, you were wiping. It simply wasn’t getting done.

Hey Byf, I was wondering if you or anyone else has already made a video on the full Ahamkara hunts? I’ve always heard a lot (in terms of the bone that Eris carries around) but I haven’t seen a full start and trigger of the hunts to the end of the ahamkara species done. If there is a video, anyone got a link? Always been fascinated by them and the wiki is… not as useful as I’d want.
I love the idea of the vex just rocking up to their throne world and being like “hey, nice swords, like our guns?”
Loved the Fallout reference with the sponsor hahahaha
I thought it was as simple as Oryx wasn't there. But I guess with all the retcons there's probably some way to communicate/intervene instantly regardless of distance.
Can't believe I'm only just putting these two points together: 1) Quria made some vex believe in worship to empower the vex assault in Oyrx's throne world. 2) The Sol Divisive vex of the Black garden worship the witness. So could the reason the Sol Divisive do this is because they that vex priest hood, they would have continued on their last command after Quria was Taken and might explain why they are so old.
Captain Baronkell? Also, very cheeky. :-D
I think some of the reason Crota built places dedicated to Oryx might have been for two reasons. Firstly to remind everyone he defeats and those in his brood that Oryx is the reason that he fights he fights to earn his fathers respect and so too should they. And secondly as a way for Oryx to keep in check the power of his son. Going by the reasons Toland states for Oryx invaiding the sol system its possible Oryx might have beleived that Crota could become more powerful than him or was close enough to power. And as such he stationed his own people to keep watch over his son. Its also possibly the reason he was able to respond so quickly to his death because he was given the information close to if not during the guardians successful assault on Crota.
I have a weird thought that the recording of savathun and xivu isn’t about eris and they’re actually talking about Mara. Idk if there is anything other than immaru saying it’s about eris but that could be a very cool twist.
Ahhh. Something nice to watch while I enjoy food. Utter bliss
Your videos always satisfy a part of my brain that I also keep godroll freakouts in. It is fantastic that you can take even more lore we've obtained and make such a great video out of something you covered years prior.
Thats why I think Bungie not bringing back Oryx before FS, is a huge wasted oppertunity , if a ghost chose him, he would be forced to stare the truth in the eye, he was proven not to be the most powerful, but he lives , from the Travelers mercy , then revenge would start to be more important to him , especially for the lie he and his sisters was told at the begunning, and whom whispered it, he would be gunning for Megamind also
Wouldn't that be a wierd message when you logged in "Travel To The Helm And Discuss The Plan With Oryx"
Side note: try using Solar Holster with Parasite. It makes it much more fun to use.
That sponsorship was funny thanks
I mean that's a really simple question, they follow the sword logic so clearly if crota was strong enough to be deserving of existence he could've beaten the guardians, even if oryx had been closer or whatever he prolly still wouldn't have intervened, this is the guy who threw crota through a vex portal as punishment after all
So oryx’s children had a house party while he was away and it nearly destroyed their home.
"We're offing ourselves, dad! As effectively as possible!"
"Adorable, but why?"
*magi-technobabble ensues*
"Daughter, speak plain, or so help me, I'll pin you the wall like worm food."
Hive love, people. Oddly wholesome.
Can’t wait for necrochasm lore
So I think the themeing with the Hive honestly is the idea of subbersion. We learned in Taken King the Hive began as short lived people who wanted more, very sympathetic.
But then we learned they were tricked and whatever agency they have is slightly skewed now. Effectively forced to become genocide machines.
But one theory has popped up in my brain recently, which is, what if the Hive don’t hate us because they hate us. What if they hate us because thats the only way they can cope with their new existence.
If we were the Hive that’d be a miserable existence but we’d be compelled to push forward regardless. So might as well go all in.
Still we see clear indications of the Hive having more complex emotions. Oryx despaired over his sons death in a way that I think was more than just concern for his own survival.
Aluk Hul wanted to betray Oryx for the love of another.
Literally everything going on with Savathung.
And especially Xivu having a mental breakdown over the failure of the sword logic. Alot of the Hive seem to be shaken by Hive using the light. I think this begs the question if redemption is a possibility.
People have talked about having buddy Hive Guardians but really, if the Hive get resurrected doesn’t that mean they have a clean slate? Aluk Hul was a monster but resurrected does he know that?
They’re all defined by actions they do now more than ever I genuinely hope we can see some redemption here.
I know this is totally random but I was thinking about one of Byf's other videos but I don't remember which it is.
I wad wondering if there was any guardian in Destiny that made a feature in their suit that would incinerate or just blow up their body when they die. That way their ghost can revive them somewhere safe, unless I'm misunderstanding something here.
0:42 RIP bonkhammer
🤔 So wouldn't this make Oryx like the Goku of the hive? Granted Goku would have planted our raid banner for us but you get the idea.
1:11 hey I have heard that before 😂
Oryx responded to the whole situation like middle management. 'Why am I getting calls from corporate about problems with a branch manager? Handle your house.'
"While he wrestled with his worm"...
Hey Byf not sure if youve covered this but it sounds like Savathun indirectly caused Oryx's downfall. Is there anything in the lore to indicate she wanted to be rid of Crota or anyone else in the family because nothing is ever coincidence when involving Sav
"Our assault proceeded unimpeded." The coolest thing you've ever said.
Love the Fallout Plays shoutout 😂
😂 thanks for reminding me of these, cracks me up to imagine the kids screwing up big time while daddy Oryx is away.
Really funny how that first entry is just the hive equivalent of the trope of the nerdy scientist character saying a bunch of science technobabble, and the hero responding with "in English please"
Proof that Oryx is the worst dad.
Crota asking for help, but his father didn't came. Crota must have done something bad to his father, to make Oryx kick him out of the house and tell him: "You're a grown man. Your on your own."
Oryx came in The Taken King, unless the lore has been retconned, it is said by Eris that Crota in his last breath sent a distress signal to the Darkness and that the Darkness (Oryx) had responded, Oryx literally says that he came seeking revenge.
When Crota dies, Oryx asks some Knights where Crota was.
"Where is Crota, your prince, my son?"
Savathun: Revenge? Oryx was a hypocrite and so are you.
I almost want to equate Oryx exiling Crota to a newly minted eighteen year old being kicked out of the house.
Lore Daddy would never do that to us.
Imagine we bring back savathun and she corrupts eris gaining her as a ally, forcing us to bring back toland from the throne world to help us with his arcane hive knowledge to bring eris back and put a end to savathun
You should do a xur lore video next time you have an apex sponsorship
The impression of fallout🤣
I always assumed the reason he came to the soul system was
1) he was the strongest by his logic and suddenly his second dies he by law must challenge us because he is now next in line of power by the logic
2) we still don’t know if Crota wasn’t or was still banished from his father for all we know his father left after observing crota at the great disaster slaying a 1000 guardians believing his son had finally proved himself of a worthy opponent to battle alone and prove himself a true god in the eyes of the logic so he left telling his some he would be worthy of standing beside him in conquest again when he conquered Sol his death was disastrous for Oryx and his court his greatest tither was now gone but now he also had no powerful heirs to continue his brood his other son Nokris was a failure and his daughters served him
3) sword logic states power must challenged and beaten by opposing power to prove itself worthy and that in this way only the strongest live it INVITES challenge perhaps Oyrx saw this as a great opportunity for him to further prove himself he had never faced such an enemy as the light bearers before
They served the deep
While we served the sky
So this was his chance to prove himself against us and to learn from his to better himself after all he learned and evolved from secrets and hidden meanings rather than war or lies
The sword logic is like prison you gotta find the biggest most powerful person and fight him lmao
Are we shooting an oversoul when we fight Oryx in kings fall?
I once wrote a more comedic take on several verses of the books of sorrow and I played Crota up as a teenager who wanted to show his dad he was worthy...but he was more horn then head and tended to act first and think later.
not tn babe, Byf just posted
So before I watch the video. My guess as to why Oryx never helped Crota was something to do with Sword Logic. Basically if Crota could ware and tear through 100's of Guardians as Oryx's Tithe Acolyte and not defeat 6 Guardians while Crota was in his Throne World and had an Oversoul, than Oryx thought Crota weak. Just as when the Vex Gate opened up. Oryx sent Crota through and said something along the lines of, "If you don't come back victorious, don't come back at all".
😂😂 nice Fallout impersonation Byf!
Wait, if Crita was in the Vex network, does that mean he showed up on the moon from that vex gate near the scarlet keep? Y'know before shadowkeep?
Completely unrelated, but I wonder if savathun saying the taken king will rise again refers to Eris.
Lmao love the Fallout bit 😂
I love how Oryx basically says 'speak plainly or ill woop your asses' to his daughters.
