AMG is surely scrambling to figure out what to do with the next C63. Here's what they should have done: First, ditch the mechanical AWD system to lose a bunch of weight. Keep the electric half for 3 things: 1 - Electric turbo boost. 2 - FWD power direct to the front wheels without all the complex transmission, extra driveshaft, and mechanical diff weight (this is also the best place to get regen off the brakes). 3 - An Integrated Starter Alternator ISA (ISG). It could work with a boosted i4, but I think the i6 is more special for the C63. Maybe offer the C43 with the i4 if people really demand it. The power doesn't have to be 600-800 HP as all these overweight hybrid Autobahn missiles are these days. Keep the motors small, keep the battery small, keep things lightweight as much as is feasible. A car the size of the C-Class really shouldn't weigh in over 2 tons at the end of the day, especially the sportiest variant.
Another .. review of this car. No matter, this means the prices of these will fall fast and then people will give them a real chance, used. I daily an M133, the close cousin of the M139. That system took me a year to fully understand and operate. This will be an amazing car, for the good prices that I see coming for them.
Because of LMP1, I’m one of the few people who really likes hybrids. The interaction of the electric and gas systems has a lot of advantages. But companies are just failing at making them cool. 1. You cannot just add hybrid to an existing car without significant weight reduction. You just can’t. Not for enthusiast cars anyways. There has to be more of an effort. 2. Even if a 4 cylinder makes sense, you’ve gotta up the cylinder count. The sound/uniqueness of higher cylinder counts is just desired. 4 cylinders are in everything. No ones paying 100k+ for an engine in a golf. This commitment to total efficiency is robbing the hybrid system of sex appeal. Small displacement V6 or V8? I’m talking really small. We could have really special engines that don’t make crazy power, supplemented by hybrid to achieve big numbers. Hybrid can be good I promise. But no one is committed to it. It’s only applied as an afterthought. Edit: 89k but that doesn’t change a thing in my book.
Just saw and of course heard an older C63 V8 when I was out, yeah, the farty 4 doesn't cut the mustard sound wise. And all the complication.... It does look ok, that blue is nice.
50% of the cylinders, 50% reliability from the start. (First car didn’t work, so Mercedes gave them a 2nd) Yes, I know it wasn’t an engine issue, but I couldn’t resist.
Was waiting for this review for a long time! And it came exactly as we predicted. RIP C63, everyone please bow down to our new overlords, the G8X platform.
Just the explanation of the drivetrain solidified my excitement for anything other than this BS. I own a fleet of sad and poor Swedish transportation devices. My first car I bought on my own was a 1986 190E, I miss it dearly…Merc at this point, not so much.
As someone living in Europe. I’m afraid this is the way it will be going with all major manufacturers. The engines will be getting smaller, battery and/or hybrid will be brought in more and more. The days of Merc V8’s are numbered I’m afraid. I’m a huge Jaguar fan, they are going all electric over the next range of models. If you have a car with a great engine. Hang onto it if you can! 😢
There’s a video on YT of a guy who went through hell trying to get Mercedes to fix the very same transmission issue you reported for them to tell him the car was fine. Not sure this gen C in general is the one to have.
Also, the CLE 53 is the REAL AMG this time around. its wayyyyyy more aggressive looking, has an Inline 6 cylinder and just has that AMG-ness that this 4cylinder hybrid blender doesnt
I thank you for your review from the enthusiast viewpoint. Unfortunately when so much other media attention is hyping up horsepower and tech this is what you get. Give me an NA engine & manual transmission in a sorted chassis under 1400kg with a willing tuneful engine and crazy hp doesn’t matter
I just find it so frustrating that AMG didn't go with the inline 6. If the 2 liter makes 470hp with just one electric turbo then a far simpler electric turbo inline 6 with AWD and 600hp while weighing 300kg less would have been perfect M3 competition. Also should name it C55 and the 4 cylinder AMG C45.
I bought the Alfa Romeo in 2018, with the C63S as the car I passed on. Love the Alfa, but now ready to replace it (105,000+ miles) I looked at the C63 again, and, exactly like you two realized, everything that I liked about it, they had ruined.
How funny that the C63 is falling on its face, when the Black Wing (at least the last gen, I'm eagerly awaiting the new one's review) is such a winner. And the M3/M4 isn't falling on its face, but it should probably hide it... 😂
I just don't think Mercedes was confident that they knew what they were making. If I was going to do a hybrid turbo four powertrain like the C63 E Hybrid, I would have leaned into the Rally/Evo 9 vibe.

Feels like you guys made your format quicker…..I really like it. Thanks for the video
Lots of Merc's new cars have this 1-2 shift issue, including on S63.
I just love Zack's sarcasm straight outta the gate.
Price will drop like rock after warranty expired
Just saw and of course heard an older C63 V8 when I was out, yeah, the farty 4 doesn't cut the mustard sound wise. And all the complication....
It does look ok, that blue is nice.
Think of the maintenance costs
Harris summarized the 204 C63 as MOPAR out of Stuttgart.
How far the mighty have fallen!
One the best examples of "Innovation does not always equate to progression."
As an owner of an old W204 C63, the title of this video is very accurate.
This gonna affect the prices of the old ones in the same way as when BMW switched the 1-series to be FWD instead of RWD.
I'm pouring out my 40 on the ground for the V8 C63 😢
50% of the cylinders, 50% reliability from the start. (First car didn’t work, so Mercedes gave them a 2nd) Yes, I know it wasn’t an engine issue, but I couldn’t resist.
Was waiting for this review for a long time! And it came exactly as we predicted. RIP C63, everyone please bow down to our new overlords, the G8X platform.
Cadillac is making the original c63.. ct5-v blackwing
If I got a killer lease this might be a cool daily for 18-36 months under warranty, but man oh man what is happening to the Mercedes-Benz that I love.
The sound that you recorded was not bad. But maybe that was just the augmented reality sound coming through.
There’s a video on YT of a guy who went through hell trying to get Mercedes to fix the very same transmission issue you reported for them to tell him the car was fine. Not sure this gen C in general is the one to have.
No V8 😢 oh dear, giant bezels around screens do not look premium. The font that Mercedes use on their screens looks cheap imo too
This is the best genuine review about the car... "it's off the mark"
I don't think it even looks good. I think the new AMG cars look the same as what your grandma drives. RIP C63.
Also, the CLE 53 is the REAL AMG this time around. its wayyyyyy more aggressive looking, has an Inline 6 cylinder and just has that AMG-ness that this 4cylinder hybrid blender doesnt
i would review this like: Its fast. Thats it.
Which for an emotional machine which every C63 was, is really not good.
I never thought I'd see the day. I know the 190/C-Class' origins, but this is ridiculous. Wouldn't trade my 2009 C63 for anything.
Looks better than the G80m3.
should be BAGED c43..
Previous gen all the way ..
Trash
Make AMG's GREAT AGAIN
Good video Zack.
Mat is trying to teach Mercedes how to do EV the correct way.
Mercedes seen that they can sell y'all a V-Tech sounding Black Series, so this C63 was the natural next step
LOVE THAT GSHOCK ❤❤❤❤
I love 6.3 liter 4 cylinder hybrids. Sick!
Thank you for putting Merc on blast!
Zack’s watch is dope. What model of G-shock is it?
I bought the Alfa Romeo in 2018, with the C63S as the car I passed on. Love the Alfa, but now ready to replace it (105,000+ miles) I looked at the C63 again, and, exactly like you two realized, everything that I liked about it, they had ruined.
Great title- hit the nail on the head.
Time to pull a 2012 Honda Civic and redesign it for next year with the good ol' V8 in it!
187,900 AUD for a AMG Merc badge, Phone screen ,leather seats and an Lancer Evo esc drive train. INSANE. just buy a 90s C or E class v8 and have all maintenance covered for the next 40 years instead.
