I wonder whether removing some of the blade would widen the gap on the machine after several blade resharpening's, allowing longer wider stuff through.

I'm pretty sure that true I've sharpen the blade a number of times and it never works as well as it did.

I wouldn't say this would be the best for pine cones. I'd recommend instead a drum shredder as the action is better at dealing with woody material.
