What’s Next For The Tempest?

  • It’s been a minute since I’ve done an update on my 1967 Pontiac Tempest. Parts backorders have really delayed the project from progressing but hopefully we will have lots of speed parts coming in shortly! I want to build this old Poncho into a very capable daily driver and maybe do a little bit of drag racing with it too. Stay tuned for more build videos soon!

I think your vision for this build is spot on. A high performance cruiser with good suspension and brakes. Reliability and decent drivability being the underpinning of the build. 500hp torque motor.
In other words, the polar opposite of your gasser '56 Chevy thrill machine. 😉
Just want to say you have a fantastic measured personality and temperament.
A last note. I hope you dedicate a video to your vintage air install...however you prefer to edit it. Many who build hotrods like air conditioning and are interested in the challenge of mounting the compressor, evaporate/condenser, routing plumbing etc.
I grew up in the era of these cars you have passion for, building and hotrodding them.
Pretty cool to see a younger generation have interest in largely a bygone era when life was simpler and more carefree compared to these more regulated times we live today.
Stay safe when working around these cars.

Sounds like a cool project. My brother is building a 69 Camaro SS that had a 350/automatic. He's going a similar route to you - building a 6 l LS with 4 speed auto - in order to get that cruiser that he can drive coast to coast in.
(He already has the animal car - 72 Nova SS, 427 fuelie 500 hp range with a 5 speed, 4 link in the back ...)

The quality and original condition kinda determines the need for fresh paint. My 1969 Cutlass needs a paint job, however the car was already repainted, and its a Cutlass 4 door so the wheel wells are already crispy...

The patina thing is getting as old and boring as everyone putting ls motors in everything. On the other hand I think this car looks good as is, just too bad it's not going with a Pontiac motor.

Love the Pontiac but I'm more of a 56 guy I would love to have that roller to put my big block in I have a 427 60 over with about 10.5 to 1 compression and AFR 265 oval port heads with a Howard's hydraulic roller the motor made really good power for only being 439 cubic inches and I'm going to put it in my 88 monte carlo SS still need a few parts I need a really good converter and I'm putting a 9 inch or 8.8 rearend in it by or if I could find a 8.5 out of a grand national would work also so just a few more parts and I'm ready to start my build. Thanks for the video .your friend from Louisiana Rick 427

Always thought that model of the Tempest was one of the best looking cars GM ever built. Really clean lines with a touch of Pontiac style. The build you are planning sounds great. If it works out you will have a comfortable, quiet, roomy sedan that absolutely kicks ass. American muscle in a tidy ol' sleeper.

    • @SweatyFatGuy
      @SweatyFatGuy Рік тому +2

Go ahead, spend more money to go slower with an LS. I put them in my trucks because the LS is a huge upgrade from the sbc and bbc engines, but not compared to a Pontiac 400, 455, or 428. I have lots of both engines. Here are the common problems with LS engines, broken exhaust manifold bolts, spun center cam journal bearings, and broken lifters because the lifters turned in the plastic trays that locate them.
The common problems with a Pontiac other than finding a 400 to build (which is easy if you know some of us who build them) are building it like a chevy then going slower, spending money where its not needed, and over revving them because everyone seems to think that high RPM is where power is made.
I have a 6.0 build I want to do for one of my trucks and a similar one for my 98 Formula to replace the LS1 in it. 4" cranks, 5.3/4.8 heads with a bit of porting, and a 224/228 cam. Essentially turning them into 400ci engines that run on E85/E100. That will cost me about $6500 each and they will make around 500hp at 6500rpm. The truck engine will be cheaper since I can use the truck manifold and oil pan.
Meanwhile there are two Pontiacs making more than that for a lot less. The 65 GTO has a 455 with ported iron heads, and a hydraulic cam that cost me $4100 to build. The 79 Formula has a 461 built on a 400 block that cost me $3200 to build, and both of those will stomp the guts out of the LS engines I want to put in the trucks and 98 Firebird.
Been checking out LS swap videos of guys putting 5.3s and 6.0s in cars, then running 14s and 13s with them. Sure throw 20psi at it and it will make good power... for a while. For the same cost you can take a 400 Pontiac block, put a 4.25" crank kit in it, add iron heads with a set of $100 Comp valve springs, a $200 camshaft and run bottom 12s to high 11s in a 3500lb car with a 3.08 to 3.55 rear gear. Liz's Bird would have been a lot faster with a mild 400 Pontiac in it she could have built into a 461 for about $3000.
As for reliability I get decades out of my engines. I am still driving engines I built in the 1990s and raced for years running 12s and faster.

Oh I hear ya! I personally know nothing about an LS, my 66 389 runs like a top, thats why its still in my car besides being a pontiac in a pontiac, see so many LS swap stuff it made me wonder what its all about, I am really not a fan of it all having to be computer controlled either, will I ever do it, honestly, dont think so but is still interesting to me what folks are doing these days.

Make a great race car with the bones of the car as would be done in the era with today's technology. In short ues as much of the stock interior, dash, and so on , but cage it and put top notch seats in of your choice, unless you want to redo the ones in it with the safety equipment and harness so you are up to today's technology. Glad you are doing this car with a 6.0L and 4L80 in it. I'm going to be dying to see you get these parts in as bad as you all are. The thing with a lot of these 60's era GM cars is rust around the bottom of the rear window. My first car a 1965 Chevy Chevelle Malibu SS had some of that. I bought my car in July 1976 and only paid $675.00 dollars for it. I know a guy who lives just down the road from me and he has the exact same car right down to the same color .He says he is not ready to sell it ,but I'm a very patient person and someday it will be in my driveway.
