  • It is 50 years since Uganda's former-dictator Idi Amin expelled thousands of members of the Asian community from the country, after accusing them of disloyalty.
They were given just three months to leave, or face being placed in concentration camps.
About 27,000 people left their homes for the UK, many of them were British passport holders.
Those settling in Leicester, England, have become part of the fabric of the city.

My dad was a kid in Leicester and told me of the first time he saw an man wearing a turban. Shocked, he remembered turning to his father and asking if the man was a pirate, like in his children's books. My grandfather, a second world war serviceman, told him to treat the new arrivals with respect, and that he had served with many Indians in the war, that they were the same people as him and my father and should be welcomed.

Because the British placed them in Uganda as a pawn to create conflict with the Ugandas. British Empire relied on usually creating a loyal minority, giving them economic and political power so that the natives can become minoritized and powerless in an ethnic and racial hierarchy. It was how the British Empire maintained its power by playing ethnic, tribal, and racial chess and hence why the Western Imperial nations relied on ethnic sectarianism to maintain power during decolonization wars in the Cold War.

The expulsion of Indians from Uganda by Idi Amin had a severe impact on the country's economy, with a decline in GDP by over 40% in the years following the expulsion. The loss of skilled workers and entrepreneurs led to a decline in production and economic output, and foreign investment also decreased due to political instability and uncertainty. The economic shock caused by their departure had a long-lasting impact on Uganda's economy.

The ugandans had become slaves to the slaves, just like the burmese to the indian muslims, as one burmese indipendence leader said "slaves to the slaves" After indpendence most indians were expelled and of course it lead to economic downfall, because indians had been the british tool for indirect rule with a large role in the economy.

That is not absolutely true, Amin asked the asian community, many holding both uk and Ugandan citizenship living in Uganda to keep their money and wealth in Uganda and not in uk and Swiss banks. The asian community exploited Uganda by making all their wealth using Ugandan resources and the money was banked in uk and Swiss banks fir themselves which didn't benefit the economy of Uganda. Amin gave an ultimatums to the asian community to become Ugandan and bring their money back to Uganda from uk and Swiss banks and help develop Uganda if they wanted to stay in Uganda and use Ugandan resources or leave Uganda for good within 3 weeks.
Most asian community chose to leave and they played heavily on the victim card so that uk and the rest if world would give them asylum.
The asian community wanted the the best of both world, ie become rich with Ugandan resources but not put back for the progress of Uganda and its people.
Why didn't the asian community accept to give up their dual uk citizenship, bring back their money and stay back in Uganda as Ugandan and help build the country.
I know for a fact that asian industrialists including Madubani family damaged and broke the machines of their factories before leaving Uganda so that they could not be used by Ugandan people. They also used to treat the indigenous Ugandans as salaves or something close to that.
There are many sides to a story, true journalism comes from honest investigations and non-biased reporting.

While the whole thing was an ordeal, i honestly think it was a long term net positive for the asian community. They were able to move somewhere where they officially had human rights and could only be harassed by fringe groups that werent politically supported. Had they stayed in Uganda, things could have gone alot worse. Not everyone went to the UK, some went to other parts of the world including where i live in Canada. They don't mix with Africans. Their children go to different private expensive schools compared to public schools for Africans. Indians have separate clubs & social halls. Unfortunately the expulsion of Asians was an extremely popular move for Idi Amin, probably the most popular moment of his deranged 7 year rule. Not only did the Asians, particularly the Indians, fail to assimilate, they were largely accused of discriminatory & derogatory treatment of Ugandans.
Having suffered 63 years of British class rule, it is no wonder Ugandans had little patience for this. They fell prey to Idi Amin's plans to paint them as the villains when the economy soured.
And even though our economy suffered the loss of many skilled workers, many Ugandans, even today, still celebrate the brutish Amin for this one act.

@John Babirukamu...South Asians would to the same of any group would be stacked above them in their own land. We can say what we want of Idi Amin but this was good decsion made by him. Ugandans belong to Ugandans and they where made to suffer while South Asians enjoyed. If South Asians would stand with Ugandans against the British Idi Amin would saw them as rightful citizens of Uganda.

I understand both sides in here. Black people globally were robbed of a stable ancestral home because of European human trafficker instability, but I also think if he cared about black people, Uganda would have better LGBT laws. If ur desperate enough to ban asians intentioned as racially, you have to be desperate enough to accept your own people in hiding 🏳️‍🌈

What a racist thing to say. Uganda is not the only country where South Asians live and work. They contribute in a net positive way in every single African country that they have made their home.
You can't be racist against others when your own black community gets discriminated in Europe and the Americas

The Asians expelled from Uganda were British subjects. They had British passports. To call them "Ugandan Asians" is falsehood. Asians have no ancestral roots in Africa. They were brought to Africa by the British colonial government. To put up a mausoleum commemorating there expulsion from Uganda as tho they were forced out of their native ancestral land is utter rubbish. The Asians should sue the British government for putting them into this predicament. They should ask for compensation from the British government not Uganda.

They offered nothing to Uganda. Sure, they had thriving businesses, but after decades, most still have strong Indian accents; a sign that they neither integrate nor embraced Ugandan culture. This is true still in many African countries today. As an American, I can say it’s certainly true in my country, especially with Indians. They are the highest earners, but do not integrate into American culture whatsoever.
