It hugely matters as movies have the power to educate, bring awareness, influence and change attitudes in people. Also there are more watchers than readers in the world. Maintaining a healthy mind is key for a happy life.
Ved is like a just a normal Millennials and he connects hard to our struggles. Yes, I am way too dramatic around few peoples. But then, the whole civilized society pushes us to be responsible and accepts other's authority which we can't. Come on, a whole new generation is here who is more informed and aware than the authorities around us. So, there will be more Ved unless we are set free and being trusted to take our own responsibilities rathan than pushing from elder' bad influences 17:26
I am compelled to state that some of his statements are deeply problematic especially absorption within traditional (well, he draws a binary of urban and rural) familial systems. There are inherent violence of those systems especially assimilation does not enhance appreciation or even recognition of plural ways of being😢
as an aspiring psychologist (Counsellor/Therapist) a great answer by Imtiaz that why / how should he give diagnosis of mental illness , I hope I create / produce a great podcast on. mental health in future and Imtiaz is guest , it will be dream come true , Anupama is a superlative host there is so much to learn from her as a HOST
I have always loved Imtiaz Ali's creations...Highway , Tamasha was bang on. Alia's scene sitting on a rock amidst the flowing river..blew my heart...Waiting to work with him as an actor...Amen for myself .
Unpopular opinion: I actually loved the story of Love Aaj Kal 2. It decently portrayed the complexity of urban life. But Acting of the leads ruined it.
He said clearly in first 3 minutes that it wasn't his intention of showing mental health in any of his movies but his characters are like that and man we love Geet, Jordan , Vade, Meera and Veronica.
That speech by Shahid in Jab we met in company meet after he comes from his 'outing' is too inspiring and inspired me then. Kudos to Imtiaz from Nepal 🇳🇵
Anupama ji when will we see 2023 director's roundtable.....lyrics writer round table...... cameraman round table..... actor's roundtable...... screenwriters round table.......also take people from all over India East to West ..... North to South.......make the 2023 a big Event
The way he was so careful about not using 'bipolar' term shows how much mature he is as a director. Otherwise directors nowadays glorify a shitty and morally ill character and then they are not even ready to take responsibility and accept that films do have influence on people
I may be way off, but I have a feeling that after the movie’s release, Imtiaz may have been urged (wisely) not to use the term “bipolar” in anything but a clinical context. I say this because the word is used multiple times in the actual movie, just not directly about Ved. Instead, it’s said in unusual contexts, as if deliberately planted, like clues. I’m wondering if Imtiaz meant it colloquially, almost as a shorthand to help viewers understand Ved’s erratic behavior, but then was later counseled against calling the character as bipolar, since Ved is never professionally diagnosed as such, he doesn’t appear to meet the clinical criteria, etc. Otherwise, it’s weird that the word would appear in the script at all, much less more than once.
I am a clinical psychology graduate. I can't disagree with Imtiaz Ali responses. It is impressive that he is accountable of his stories and how he accepts that he is not technically sound to make diagnosis of mental health condition. Diagnosis of mental health problems can/should only be done from the professionals who are trained and authorized for assessment. I am against making mental health condition fancy and self diagnosis, because I have seen many people with little information labelling themselves and others, also many people (especially adolescents/young adults) catostrophizing instead of taking support and doing self-care. I see film making as a team work, every person from audio engineer, light person, producer, actors, cinematographer, musician and many faces we don't see make it and a good director possess qualities of a good leader/facilitator who can can bring all the team together to tell his story/stories. I think Imtiaz Ali did brilliant job in some of his movies, especially Tamasha. Whilst I see Tamasha now from different perspective from before, as I want to see the after story of Ved and other sides of Tara as how she became the person as seen in the movie. Tamasha has flaws like we all have but it is a beautiful story.
Before Jab we met, there was a fixed pattern of writing romcoms. From. 2007 the scenario completely changed. Aditya and Geet are two of my most fav characters of all time. We can't even imagine then to make a love story with protagonist as female and supporting actor as male. He broke it. And with Rockstar, highway & Tamasha he set new boundaries. Though some of the traits of jordon can be defined as toxic still that film is an emotion for me when i was in college in 2011, Rahman & Mohit classics. And Highway & Tamasha are two of his best films according to me. Ved is me, I am ved. Imtiaz Sir, waiting for your next. Please don't make films like Jab harry met sejal or love aaj kaal 2. Regards, A huge fan of yours ❤
If I know God, It's Imtiaz Sir. If he led a religion, I would follow it. Our generation needs more of your work. We just need more. It worries me, my next generation would never experience what I did through his work.
More than Tamasha it is difficult to understand love aaj kal 2 i understand in 2nd go and really when i understood it i was blown always its is very deep to understand love aaj kal 2
The first question itself is so great. There's always too much concern from the creators on whether they would be alienating viewers. It's really holding us back.
He is a good filmmaker. I loved all his movies except Love aaj kal 2019 and Jab Harry met Sejal. Rest all are nice. My favourite one is Highway ❤❤❤❤. What a performance by Randeep Hooda and Alia Bhatt ❤❤❤. Loved Jab we met, it's like a fairy tale. Love aaj kal 2009, a lovely movie, Rockstar a lovely movie. And Tamasha a nice movie ❤❤❤. I am waiting for Chamkela.....based on the life of Punjabi folk singer Amar Singh Chamkela ❤❤❤
Rural India k log itne bhi zyda regressive nhi h jitna ap log sochte h because m khud ak bhut chote sahar se hu 😂 yaha bhi kuch log world cinema dekhte h aur samjate h
@filmcompanion Anupama do review and analyze this lovely, sensitive and such an articulate movie called three of us that deals with mental health. The writing is so intricate and the expressions of shefali, swanand and jaideep are so nuanced u will be blown away as a connoisseur 🎉 ❤
Why does the portrayal of mental health in movies matter?
It hugely matters as movies have the power to educate, bring awareness, influence and change attitudes in people. Also there are more watchers than readers in the world. Maintaining a healthy mind is key for a happy life.

If anyone from imtiaz Ali's team is reading these than do tell him to make a full fledged version of 90's story of love aaj Kal 2

@@prottoydibakar4469exactly!
@@prottoydibakar4469 I actually loved arushi sharma's acting even kartik was good in 90's barring that shoddy makeup

I love the way he put his point forth about romanticising of mental health issues in his films. Such a lovely interview!
It is always a pleasure listening to the great man,he is such a charmer of words
Bhati in Highway is the reason why l love that film, there’s no other character like him in Bollywood till date.
He said clearly in first 3 minutes that it wasn't his intention of showing mental health in any of his movies but his characters are like that and man we love Geet, Jordan , Vade, Meera and Veronica.
Rockstar is my inspiration ❤
I always had this in mind... talking about mental health & positivity with Imtiaz ali... All of his movies has something like this in background.
He speaks so much sense and exuberates so much empathy. Thanks for this interview FC team 🧡
