Hey FabFilter, just thought you should know I recently completed my collection of all your plugins and that can certainly be attributed to these videos with Dan (as well as his channel). Thanks for making such amazing creative and usable tools, and for bringing us excellent tutorials.
Dan is basically the reason I have the fab filter plug-ins I have. His tutorials are incredible.
I've been working on how to create a kick with V3 all afternoon and then this video appears. Impeccable service!
yep, this was cool. synthesizing kicks is actually lots of fun and does result in usable sounds most of the time
So good. He is impressively good in explaining concepts. Thanks Dan & FF!
I didn't understand why there was no big boom on filter 3 like you even though all my parameters seemed to match. Then I realised my filter style was on gentle and not metal :D Invaluable tutorials, thank you Dan.
Brilliant Dan Worrall, and brilliant FabFilter - you don't need much more to do excellent music! Greetings from Amsterdam!
dan worrall again!

If you don't have Saturn 2, you can also just add another filter that feeds all before it, and drive that one.
wow its a whole series :D
This man is a legend
Man you read my mind 🤘
I don't have volcano 3, and even if I did I wouldn't in a month of Sundays decide to use it to synthesise my own drum samples. But I watched this video from start to finish with total fascination and wonder.
What's wrong with me.
There's nothing wrong with you. It's the siren song of Dan Worrall's voice.
Can you explain why the release phase matters at all? I assumed that by setting sustain to 0, you effectively go from 0 to 100 in attack phase, immediatelly down to sustain level with decay phase (which is 0), and then you sustain the note there for the duration of the note, but since you sustain it at 0, there is nowhere lower to go, so the release would just go from 0 to 0, essentially doing nothing...
The release matters if the note off arrives while the envelope is still decaying.
@@DanWorrall Oh! So a note-off will essentially start releasing from whatever level it was when fired?
@@cURLybOi Exactly. I learned this the "hard" way. Basically if your midi input only lasts say 0.8 secs and you're already in the decay or sustain of the note, ESPECIALLY when dealing with low frequencies, the abrupt cut off will introduce clicks. But yah, previously I also assumed the same thing as you
@@DanWorrall Actually setting the decay and the release time to the same value is not a reliable technique to ignore note off. In my experiments, if the midi off is received while the signal is still decaying, the release phase will start and will last for the full duration of the release value. In other words, if the the attack is 0s, the decay and sustain are both 1sec, and a midi note last 0.5sec, the envelope will take 1.5 sec to fully complete. If the midi note last more than 1sec, it will take 1 sec to fully complete. If the midi note lasts 0.2 sec, it will take 1.2 secs to fully complete. Having said that, the release will start from the value where the envelope is at when the note off is received. That means that if the midi off is received at 0.5 sec in my previous examples, the envelope will last 1.5sec but will have a different shape than an envelope with a decay set 1.5 s with a midi note off received after 1.5s. They will be both the same total length but the overall shape of the decay / release will be different. The only reliable workaround with FabFilter envelopes that I know of is to make sure the note is consistently very short (much shorter than the decay), or consistently longer than the decay.
How to route MIDI into volcano in Ableton, when there is a synth with white noise, before volcano? I don’t get it working
That's pretty easy:
1. Set up a separate MIDI Channel
2. Route "MIDI To" to your Volcano-Channel
If your Volcano-Channel is a MIDI Channel as well: Change the entry in the second row from "Track In" to Volcano.
That's it!
@@thomasberner5282 Hi Thomas! Then I cant hear the audio from first track. I already tried it.
@@thomasberner5282 First Track is Vital with white noise. Setting is Audio to: Track 2 (MIDI with Volcano) and Monitor set to Auto.
Track 2 is a MIDI Track with Volcano:
MIDI From: Track 1, Monitor IN (tried also Auto and off), Audio To: Master
I'm sorry, if I was unclear. Here's my setup:
1. MIDI Track with Operator (for the noise) and Volcano on it. MIDI note(s) is/are needed to open the Operator VCA to here the noise.
2. MIDI Track with nothing on it. This one controls Volcano as descriped.
I hope this helps you. Cheers
Gsus!! Thank you!! 🥳🥳🥳
we need the Dan Worrall 808 sample pack
Great stuff, those are some really juicy kicks! For a lazy producer, is this also available as a preset? :P
It’d be cool to add another control from velocity - shortening the low boom and making the click louder. Like burying the beater in a kick drum with very hard hits
I've followed this video and get to the portion of modifying Filter 1/2 and the moment I turn off the 3rd. I lose all sound. Tips?
"Techno Territory" - So good! On so many levels. 😉
DAN HEARD OUR PLEAS.
HAIL DAN
Best plug-ins
Hi,any chance to get my hands onto this preset? Thanks
Its pretty easy to make.
Mega Dan, you ma man
Fabfilter is the best!
Anyone re create this preset that can link it here?
roll your own, love it haha
And this is easier than looking for samples how? My hat off to you sound design peeps, this is crazy! I know you should never say never but I don’t think I could ever do sound design, this is way past my brain’s capacity. Thank you Dan.
Just give me more Dan and I'm a happy man
Ohhh yessss. I tried to do this on my own with white noise, and just messing around I almost went deaf and blew out my system LOL! They aren’t joking when they say that fabfilter has ‘infinite headroom’ 😵
holy shit
Hmm..the wizardry of synthesis. I guess trying to replicate the tuneful decay of filter 3 in volcano and failing accumulates another victim here. My bad! Having to learn as much as possible (music, life and people) in so short a time limits ones concentration. Its a shame though as talented people could do so much more with a clear enlightened teacher who dedicates himself to basic synthesis.
nice vid. I will come back to it..
Unless you want to show me why I couldn't get the sound of filter three to work...I doubt it but worth a comment! where's that teacher?
Тор
Sir, you shouldn't be telling people to check out the manual when the manual doesn't explain this!
thats a really fat kick
