  • Chapter One: Metal Milita ... How did an army of tape-trading penpals help a group of pimply misfits "go viral" in 1982? Metal Militia recounts the story, from Lars Ulrich's chance encounter with Motorhead in a London rehearsal space to some pretty weird personal ads and the arrival of Cliff Burton.
Check out three more chapters, available only on the Spotify mobile app in the US, UK, Sweden, and Germany: open.spotify.c...

    About Landmark:
Landmark is an original video series about monumental moments in music history, created for a new generation of listeners. Whether delving into the origins of thrash metal or the release of a classic album, each installment of Landmark enlists credible, eclectic voices to explain not just what happened, but why it still matters.
Each multi-part installment is comprised of short videos that can be watched as individual, self-contained chapters or binged all at once in a half-hour viewing experience. Themed companion playlists offer newly-converted fans a chance to dig deeper after they watch.
    About Metallica: The Early Years:
Metallica: The Early Years celebrates penpals, the birth of thrash metal, heavy-riffing cellists, and the origins of one of rock's most influential bands. Focusing on the period from band's formation in 1981 through the release of 1984's Ride The Lighting, each chapter features candid interviews, rare archival footage, messed-up animations from Anthony Schepperd, and unusual context showcasing the strange ways Metallica's tentacles continue to worm their way through our collective unconscious.

Yeah, man! I wonder who has been in more documentaries Scott Ian or Neil Gaiman, I see them all the time :D
My guess it's because they're both nerds for what they do and have a lot of stuff to say about it, especially since they've actually been in the shit when it happened.

Sorry Spotify, I truly enjoyed part 1, but I hate the fact you try to force me to watch the rest in the small screen of my mobile. Besides, like some are already saying, it doesn't work in all cell phones. Which brings me to my complaint: what makes you think all people will enjoy that, or will be able to play such a long video on their phones? I hope you really consider you're losing clients. I clicked on this video because I loved it, it hooked me from second 5....I am leaving because of your fucking cell phone apps and impositions and shit.

Thanks for this fantastic video! I loved to listen to the history of Metallica, and I loved how they say at the beginning, that today you just press a button and there it is, the music somebody else spent years of his/her life making. But back in those days, you had to save money, get penpals, go to the music stores, go to actual concerts to get to know who was in and who was out. I wish I had been born before, as most of the music I hear is actually older music! My dad introduced me to Led Zeppelin and my brother lent me his Metallica records. I wish I had been born in the right era :-)

I never knew that part about Lars having the access to the studio and having a spot on the Metal Massacre album. I always thought that came after James and Lars got back together. Now, I get the impression that James was just using Lars to get his songs out there, and one thing led to another... now he's stuck with him.

+Cory Parker He keeps the beat, has endurance and stays mostly on tempo but he does nothing impressive or innovative. Get a little more up to date on what's going on in metal today and if you're still impressed with his vanilla drum patterns anyone could come up with... you didn't listen to the right bands. lol

So let me get this straight. Spotify makes this little 4 part documentary about Metallica that a lot of people are definetly interested in all around the world, and they restrict it to only 5 countries.

So takeaway from this, Lars was only in Metallica because of the record deal and because he was rich.
He was always bad at drumming XD

I found it hypocritical back in 2000 (and even today) that Lars was all about tape trading back in the 80s but went ape shit over Napster which was essentially the same damn thing only quicker and no worry about loss of quality due to being digital.
