- Doug Mills, a veteran photographer for The New York Times, was only a few feet away from former President Donald J. Trump at the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, when the shooting started. Mr. Mills kept his finger on the shutter button, photographing as the scene unfolded. It was only afterward, while reviewing his photos, that he realized he had captured the apparent path of a bullet used in the assassination attempt against the former president. He explains what he saw.

I could not imagine the photo source was NYT.

NYT was once a great newspaper. It was in decline.
Now we get to see if it can become great again. This shot is the fork in the road. NYT can either get back to award winning news coverage of today’s events, unbiased…. Or be another cog in the wheel of mainstream media & just repeating the same script they are being given.

But why would you have your camera on that setting? It's not a normal setting. Seems odd you had it on that setting or even brought a camera that strong to a rally. Sorry. Don't buy it was random.

Not everything in the world is planned. Most things are not as we go about our lives. Get out of the house, smell the grass, take a walk. It will do you good. Oh and stop making random accusations without making the actual claim you want to make. "Seems odd" and "Don't buy it" statements are so common in the comment section from trolls and keyboard drinkers. Try to be better.

does the trajectory of that bullet path look like the gun was 15-20 feet above Trump? The bullet does not look like it was dropping due to gravity, indicating it was close by...had it been on the water tower or the warehouse way behind the building the shooter was on it would show loss of height due to gravity, which it does not exhibit.

That streak looks to be at least a foot long if we compare it to Trump's head. If whatever caused it took 1/8,000th of a second to travel that foot then that is a speed of 8,000 ft per second. Quite the muzzle velocity. This does not align with basic physics so what is wrong? What is missing in the information that is being presented here?
Does not have to be the actual bullet but instead the effect of the bullet on the atmosphere as it moved..
So the length etc.. Does not indicate it speed..
Like the trails in the sky after a plane during certain weather conditions..
It does tend to show the direction etc.. Of the bullet though...

A very strange choice of shutter speed for that situation.. Was it known in advance that something "spectacular" was going to happen?

Real question
because he is shooting at f1.6 (narrow focus) at 24mm (wide angle) , so it is likely the focus is off and potentially cropped/zoomed.

Check every news outlet the image is slightly different, and scientifically the rifle shoots a slug at almost 50% slower around 3,700. It's an easy myth busters. What should be a blur is broadcast cameras which don't capture in higher shutter speed, they usually capture around 28fps to maybe 30 something which is similar to the human eye, that's why they edited the 4K footage of the dude in the back who literally captured everything in HD.

Actually my first thought was uncorrected lens aberation but I think it is more the effect of the above combined the relatively low res (only 3.5MP on a 50MP sensor) that he was using to maximize his buffer. I'd like to see the uncropped uncompressed version released at some point but that is unlikely.

How often do you use the camera at that speed? Seems ironic to have it set at that speed for a rally.
Very often. You do know that is a snapshot of the vapor trail not the actual bullet. Go to a gun range sometimes when the humidity is just right you can see them regularly.

@@JimKalpa-qd9zr Are vapor trails copper-colored, and only a few inches in length? Or is it more likely that 1/8000th shutter speed would still be too slow to crisply capture a 5.56mm bullet in flight and the copper-jacketed bullet is therefore blurred and elongated in the image?
If it was very bright then he would have to...
Also he may have his camera set to change to such a mode if he hoods the shutter down for rapid burst...
That way he can take normal shots while also having a special burst mode when he holds down the shutter..
Not sure about Sony cameras though..

Hmmm let's do the math... typical 5.56 ball ammo, 3,100 fps at muzzle, 2,850fps at 150 yd. 1/8000 (.000125 of a sec) 2,850 * .000125 = 0.356ft. length or about 4.2 inch. The line appears much longer than 4 inches... so either the camera speed claimed is off or its just hoax pic... Sorry for applying basic math.

I think it will turn out that it was _shrapnel_ streaking passed, not a bullet. Trumps ear would have been shredded, not _nicked_ and would almost certainly have suffered significant hearing loss if it had actually been a bullet that hit him.

Yes. Ill analyse that in my next video. The line has got 26-27cm. You can compare it with the Mic, which might be 5cm thick. I found a mic on the internet which is that broad.
And the line should be 12-13cm long.

As an American, I'm inclined to agree. Especially if the news were ever to get out that he was grazed by shrapnel rather than a bullet. We may never know, since he won't let his doctors say.

Why doesn't he explain each of the frames, including the exact time? For example, one frame shows Trump's hand on his ear. He raised his hand from the podium only after the sound of the first bullet. Mills doesn't explain that either. The next frame shows his hand halfway down to the podium. Are they supposed to be successive frames at 8,000 frames per second? Impossible. What was the exact time? He still could have been hit by a piece of glass from the first bullet. The bullet was travelling at least 2,500 feet per second, so the streak should be about 3 inches at 1/8,000 sec, but it appears to be 12 inches. Mills doesn't explain that either. The photo of his ear doesn't show a distinct bullet hole and there is no blood on his hair behind his ear. Listening to the video with sound, and accounting for the sound delay, which was about 0.3 seconds, shows that his hand was halfway to his ear when the second bullet was fired, so the bullet would have been a few hundred feet past his ear. Also, Trump refuses to reveal his medical report. What doesn't he want us to know? Wray and the bipartisan House commission need to investigate more. If it is a bullet in the photo, it didn't hit Trump's ear.

I got no message from the FBI and you didn't get one either. You only read the FBI public statement. The fact is that nobody has any direct evidence that a bullet hit Trump. The FBI has only indirect evidence because Trump told his yes man Johnson, or whatever his name is, not to release his medical record. He also threatened to sue the hospital if they say anything.

Did you think if he held down his finger on the button for 1 second, he'd produce 8,000 photos on his memory card of several Mb each? It can be done with lab equipment, but not with handheld commercial photography equipment.
