  • I have always been curious how riding an electric mountain bike is, so this weekend I decided I would go out a rent one to find out. I know e-bikes are something that are very controversial on the trails.
I'm going to be making another video focusing in on the specs of the bike and all the ends and outs of mileage, etc!

I got mine as a vehicle replacement for commuting. I have been a roadie for a long while. My fitness isn’t an issue, but turning up to work a sweaty mess is. Also I almost broke my back a year ago, and 8 years ago I broke my tib, fib and ankle. I have a lot of hardware in my right leg. I can ride just fine, but the e-bike has saved me a lot of pain, stress, and costs of maintaining a 2nd car for the family and dealing with parking.

I hear you. Buying this bike is my middle finger to major car repair bills lately and the road rager filled obstacle course commuting has become. I'm hoping it will also keep travel time down compared to a regular bike, while containing my planter faciitis. @lanning

Hello, just bought two Giant E bikes one for my wife and one for myself. We live in Pa. where they have turned the old rail road tracks into what they call Rails to Trails walking and riding paths. We are older 63 and 66 still feel young. The bikes have given us a new hobby and a new way to explore the Pennsylvania country side. Great way to travel. We love them, P.S. we have the same bike that your riding! I would recommend it .

Hi, enjoyed your review, good honest evaluation. I noticed towards the end you said not for me, true for now but in 30 years you may change your mind. I am 65 and just bought the same bike about two months ago, it got me back into MTBing. there is a niche for these bikes.... got me off my ass and getting out there again. Loving the Giant E bike, and yeas it is heavy.

My coworkers are older and they are e-mtb riders. It's a way for them to spend good money to support a changing cycling industry they love and most importantly they get excited about riding again. It also enables them to keep pace with younger riders.
Ask yourself would you want that friend or family member feeling like a drag on your ride or being able to get to be outside with you. I have always said cycling is the only sport you can enjoy alone or have even more fun with fellow cyclists.
If you want to help getting riders out there (grandparents, aging parents, injured riders) e-bikes are a great method.
People need to get rid of the mentality that it is "cheating" because more often than not it is your OWN opinion. Leave your ego at home!! Most of these times you're not even competing.
Let's also be real here and remind ourselves that cycling is about getting out there and not making it about dividing people into different camps.
Think about getting a Ibis 🤠🤙🏽

Good post Patrick. I was surprised when a couple of people asked "Is that one of those cheater bikes...?" These are the same people who have commuted by car for as long as I have known them. Bikes are one of the few simple pleasures in life.

It's a mistake you won't get a cardio workout if you use an e-bike. You can. Think of it this way, if you use a large cog and pedal at 90rpm, and your HR is around 130-140bpm, what's the difference if you are still getting the same bpm with an electric bike? Your heart is still working the same, ergo you will get the same benefit. Looking at it another way - is it cheating if you use a 10speed or 12speed cassette and a 32T crank vs someone who will use a single speed 16T cog + 32T crank?
Do not confuse cardio and aerobic development/training vs neuro muscular training. If you climb hills with a 32T crank and 24T cog, you will get stronger legs, but your endurance may not develop at all if your bpm is at 160 for 2-3 hours. It may even be bad for you!
This afternoon, I just took a look at a heavily discounted Giant fathom 3 plus e-bike for U$2,000 incl taxes. Regular price is U$2,750 but it is a 2019 model and a close-out sale to make room for the 2020 model. Now in urban commuting, 2 speed brompton at 15T cogs and a 56T chainring. I usually don't change gears. I stay at that gear. I find folding bikes ideal for urban/city biking. But for trails, and if the hills are tough, yes, I can tough it out to climb just what you did. But there are times, I just want to enjoy the ride, and not get tuckered out. I just want to visit beautiful places, eat local food, etc. In short, I just want a chill ride with no thoughts that some segments will be tough. That's where e-bikes come in.
Now, even hardcore and very fit and competitive MTBers can benefit from e-bikes. Think of those training and want to perfect their downhill technique. But what goes down, must first go up. E-bikes removes the hard work going up so you can do more repeats and not get tuckered out going up.
Yes, each of us have reasons. Some are already old, some have injuries, some recovering from a heart bypass and want to be fit, some want to reach their work without being sweaty, some want to ride with their more hardcore friends but can't keep up if they don't have an e-bike, etc. Many reasons. But if you think that you won't get a cardio workout with an e-bike, that only happens if you don't pedal and use 100% of the motor. But in most pedal assist, you doln't. And it's not as if you cannot control the power of assist from the lowest to the highest.
So, go ahead, buy an ebike for its flexibility. AFAIC, the only downside is the cost and the added weight.
BTW, thanks for this video. Very helpful and it has convinced me to buy one! :)

I got an e-bike (Focus Jam2) about 9 months ago and it has been great so far. I always ride it in eco, cause I only want it as a small push so I can do all climbs. Its still quite a workout this way (avg hr 155 bpm). In Eco it can do about 50km (2 big climbs of around 550m vertical gain each). In higher modes it would probably be half of that.
When riding e-bike you have to watch over the cadence and keep it high (in 90s) just like you would on non e-bike. You must have been in way too high gear where it stopped for you uphill.
Did you fall ? Saw your dirty hands haha. Hope you had good time on it. Do you think your pup will be able to follow you around once he grows up a bit more ? I know it might be impossible to film but Id love to see how he chills there. :)

    • @fendermon
      @fendermon 5 років тому

Yup, funny people think you can't get a workout on an ebike. Put it in eco and it just feels like a regular bike. @Ziga

That was an intense trail, great job :) No trails like that in MI.
I just bought this bike for my 12 mile urban, pot hole filled, slog/commute/hell through Pontiac. This was the only high quality front suspended ebike I could find for 2K (leftover 2018). Put a long travel Thudbuster seat post on it
(no ...properly inflated fat tires are _NOT_ suspension), a trunk, and a couple lights and it's good to go. Round trip on normal assist uses about half the battery, ...great bike and enjoyed your video.

Giant Explorer E3+ is probably the best all around hybrid mountain bike made in the world today. Because these bikes are a blast to ride, people inadvertently tend to ride more, consequently burning more calories and improving their cardio. And isn’t that the point? Fun and exercise while cycling at any age. 🤓

Pedelecs or pedal assisted e-bikes with 250w motor and speed up to 20mph (US) or 25kph are allowed everywhere. And why wouldn’t they be? Today with batteries inside the tube and small motors, weight which is literally brought down to (on some models) like 7-8 pounds more than your Stance, 80% of people cannot even tell the difference when they see an e-bike for the first time.
E-bikes can be a harder workout than a conventional bike, if you want them to be... Not to mention they are equally capable downhill and, of course, much more capable uphill. They can help you discover areas or climb mountains you never thought you could. Haters were there when the e-mail or anything with an “e” came as well... 😊 Resistance to progress is not futile, it’s just dumb. 😉
At the end of the day, why would anyone care... People, just ride whatever makes you happy.

Assisted bikes let you go farther, easier, and faster than a non-assisted bike. What's wrong with any of that? If you don't like easier part, turn the assist off for awhile and see how you like that! The biggest problem with assisted bikes are the regulations limiting them.
